Scott Sadil [41:39], author and Fly Fishing Editor of Gray's Sporting Journal, is a pioneer in fishing the surf in Baja, and in his many years of experience he's learned a ton of valuable tips. Even if you never plan on fishing Baja, you'll find his advice helpful for finding fish along a wide beach, choosing which flies and tackle to use, and learning new techniques for moving the fly. In the Fly Box this week, we have some fascinating questions from listeners, including: I am having trouble casting a size 6 fly with lead eyes on my 5 weight. What can I do to correct this? I am struggling with my distance casting. Any tips for helping with this, and for fishing large tailwaters? When I hook panfish and bass along a shoreline, they always head for shore yet carp always swim to deep water. Why? My Royal Wulffs don't float properly when I drop them in a glass of water. What can I do to help? What kind of flies and colors do you suggest for fishing the surf in Costa Rica? How should I dispose of old waders that leak? Is there one rod I can use for surf fishing, largemouth bass, and streamers for trout? If you float a river in a canoe of kayak by yourself, how do you get back upstream at the end of the day? Should I use a 7-weight or 8-weight rod for throwing big streamers for trout? How should I fish freshwater rivers that are tidal for bass and pike? And how do I get wire onto the end of my leader for the pike? Why do people use a Bimini Twist? I would think it just pushes the weak spot in a leader further back. Is bug spray harmful to fish? If I am hiking into high alpine lakes, should I hike in my wading shoes?

Cindy Ross is the author of the new book, "Walking Toward Peace- Veterans Healing on America's Trails," which profiles combat veterans who found healing through the outdoors as well as long-distance expeditions. She shares her journey of writing the book and what she learned from veterans. Cindy Ross has written numerous articles and books, including "The World is Our Classroom- How One Family Used Nature and Travel to Shape an Extraordinary Education" and "A Woman's Journey on the Appalachian Trail." Bio from Cindy's Website In April 2021, Walking Toward Peace- Veterans Healing on America's Trails, The Mountaineers Books, Seattle, will be released. The veterans' portraits were created by her son, Bryce Gladfelter. Walking Toward Peace shares the intimate stories of veterans who, post-deployment, have wrestled with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Through a process called “ecotherapy,” spending time in nature to promote healing and mental health, they have found new tools to deal with issues that have resulted from combat experiences: survivor's guilt, nightmares, lack of trust, depression, hypervigilance, thoughts of suicide, and lack of purpose. Some veterans profiled here have gone to extremes, spending months on long-distance expeditions, like hiking the 3,100-mile Continental Divide Trail or canoeing the 2,320-mile Mississippi River. For many others, however, brief excursions in the outdoors offer an opportunity for healing. Author Cindy Ross examines current research and perspectives of professional therapists and provides information on organizations devoted to healing veterans in the outdoors. Each featured veteran is depicted in an illustrated portrait. Veterans share their stories, frequently as they sit by a campfire, describing wartime traumas and their present lives. Through their collective voices what becomes clear is that anyone suffering from any form of PTSD may discover the powerful comfort and healing that can be found in the outdoors. Cindy and Her family Cindy lives near the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania with her husband, Todd in a log home they built themselves from raw trees. They grow much of their own food on their rural property. As a family, besides the Continental Divide Trail, they have traveled to Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe hiking, cycling and paddling and have traveled extensively throughout the US. Besides Cindy's nine published books, she has written over 1,000 magazine articles for such national magazines as Outside, Backpacker, Paddler, Gray's Sporting Journal, Outdoor Life, Canoe & Kayak, Adventure Cyclist, Sailing, Wooden Boat, Scouting, Native Peoples, etc. Travel stories in newspapers include The LA Times, The San Francisco Examiner, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, The Toronto Star, The Christian Science Monitor, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, etc. Cindy has appeared on Philadelphia's NBC “The 10 Show;” Philadelphia's ABC “Sunday Live”; NYC's CBS News “Up to the Minute;” NYC's Channel 11Warner Bros., “The Morning News,” and Denver's CBS. Her family and llamas were featured on a half-hour show on Animal Planet, called “Pet Story.”

In this paper he outlines the way in which he used his methodology and how it can be applied to other similar research projects. The second paper is given by Marjolein van Bavel of Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas, National Autonomous University of Mexico & Department of History, University of Antwerp titled The Boxing Commission knocked out cold: Ending the prohibition of women's boxing in Mexico City in the 1990s. Marjolein outlines a hard fought process by which women, led by Laura Serrano, campaigned to overturn a ban on female boxing which had been introduced in 1946. Both papers feature excellent Q&A sessions with a wide ranging discussion between the presenters and delegates.

Reid takes the opportunity to share another story, this one originally published in Gray's Sporting Journal. The story is a bit of a tribute and a bit of a reflection on people and place, and a now-gone relative with a devilish way about her. Hopefully it will provide you all with a nice escape during these uncertain and strange times. Enjoy!
This week host Jeff Troutman talks with global traveler Jon Covich. Jon Covich has spent the last 25 years immersed in the fly fishing industry and has been one the Pacific Northwest’s tackle reps for the past 20 years. He currently represents Outcast, Thomas & Thomas Fly Rods, and Galvan Reels. In addition to his business as a tackle rep, Jon has traveled to many of the world’s best fly fishing destinations, as both an angler and a professional photographer. Jon is an expert on fishing and travel to Cuba, and works with Fly Water Travel as one of their travel consultants. Photos of his adventures have appeared in Outside Magazine, Grey’s Sporting Journal, Fly Fisherman, Fly Rod & Reel, and Catch Magazine. Jon lives in Seattle Washington with his wife and two sons. Jon first traveled to Cuba in the 1990’s to fish the newly opened Jardines de la Reina. Since then, Jon has been to Cuba more than twenty times, and has fished every important fishing destination on the island multiple times. “I absolutely love the fishing in Cuba, and can’t really think of another place in the world I have been that rivals it. Furthermore, I am fascinated by Cuban life, Cuban culture, and the time warp that exists on this island. On every fishing trip I try to build in several extra days in order to see places most tourists don’t, and to get a better sense of how Cubans live.” Episode Links: Jon@flywatertravel.com https://www.flywatertravel.com/

A guide for those interested in hearing more about fishing and other paths to eating more responsibly. Now here's your host, Mark Norquist. Mark: 00:23 Hey everyone. Welcome to episode number eight of Modern Carnivore Podcast. Mark: 00:30 Today we're going to talk about Wilderness areas. And more specifically, we're going to take you to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which is the most threatened Wilderness in the U.S. So before we get into that, let's do a little background on what we mean by wilderness with a capital w. The Wilderness Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B Johnson in 1964 and it created the National Wilderness Preservation System and it also put a legal definition around the term Wilderness. One of the primary authors of this act, Howard Zahniser, uh, defined it this way, "A Wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain. BWCAW Hunting and Fishing Mark: 01:43 It's really protective overlay that's applied to certain areas in our country; certain areas of public lands. They could be national forest parks, wildlife refuges, any number of different places. Um, one of the criticisms that has been made in the past about it is the reference to quote man himself as is a visitor who does not remain. But I think that's the critical element of it and why it is really unique. So if you think about it, there are very few places where there are no buildings, no roads, no machines, and the only really semi-permanent structures I can think of would be these throne toilets. Basically a seat to sit on and do your business and the fire grades to control where you, where you do fires. And that's specific to the Boundary Waters where we're at today. And I think that's a pretty special thing in something that is, that is needed in this world. Mark: 02:52

AD Maddox is an accomplished artist who creates some of the most spectacular and memorable paintings of trout that I’ve ever seen. Using bright colors and unique perspectives, AD depicts trout and the fly fishing lifestyle in a way that is completely original, yet so authentic you’d be hard-pressed to find an angler who doesn’t love her work. Her art has been featured widely throughout the fishing world, including on the cover of Gray’s Sporting Journal, Patagonia apparel, and even StealthCraft drift boats. • I first encountered AD’s work when I moved to Jackson Hole in the mid-2000s. I’m not an art connoisseur, but I was instantly taken away with how she managed to capture the beauty and realistic details of trout with a contemporary and unconventional style. And just like her work, AD is a one-of-a-kind original—she spent years as a super-competitive athlete, studied exercise physiology in college, taught herself to paint without any formal art education, and rips around backroads on a Ducati motorcycle. Despite a fun-loving and easygoing exterior, she approaches her work with discipline and rigor that seem more fitting for a professional soldier than a professional artist. • Thanks to AD’s outgoing and hilarious personality, we had a very fun and wide-ranging conversation. We chatted about her many years living in Jackson Hole and how the people, landscapes, and natural beauty of that valley influenced her art. We discussed her upbringing and her parents' role in giving her the confidence to pursue art as a full-time career. She also talks in detail about the importance of facing challenges (both in work and life) head-on and proactively, with a positive attitude and relentless work ethic. Whether you’re an artist or not, there are many wise lessons in the conversation that anyone could apply to their work and life. • Thanks to AD for taking the time to chat. So much fun! Hope you enjoy. ••• http://mountainandprairie.com/ad-maddox/ ••• TOPICS DISCUSSED: 2:45 - How AD describes her work 4:30 - Why AD focused on fly fishing as a primary subject 5:50 - Selling her first piece of art 7:20 - Using photos to learn to paint trout 8:45 - How her art has changed over the years 10:30 - Knowing when a painting is truly finished 12:15 - How AD learned the technical aspects of art 14:00 - AD’s artistic influences and mentors 16:00 - Lessons learned from painting mistakes 17:15 - Advantages of not waiting for permission 19:00 - AD’s optimistic attitude 21:00 - The constant quest to reinvent her art 24:00 - Writers/Artist’s block? 26:40 - AD’s early years in athletics 29:00 - Parent’s influence on her confidence 31:20 - Haters: the sign of success 34:00 - How living Jackson Hole shaped her art 35:50 - Importance of schedule, routine, and discipline 41:00 - Discipline versus inspiration 42:20 - Riding motorcycles 43:40 - How motorcycles helped her overcome personal challenges 46:00 - How personal challenges affected her art 50:00 - Favorite books 52:31 - Craziest outdoor experience 54:54 - Favorite place in the West 1:02:13 - Connect with AD online
