We move around a Taxidermist's candlelit workshop. It is full of dark, dusty objects cluttering every nook and cranny. Stuffed animals, piles of bones, amphibians pickled in formaldehyde; all tools of the trade, all laid out ready for use. We then reach Mr Stuffit, huddled up by the fireplace alongside his daughter Jocasta; who is a stunning thing of great beauty. Nineteen and never been kissed, but if eerie Gothicness was ever made an Olympic sport, with her tatty Victorian clothing, wild black hair, alabaster complexion and antique Caliper strapped around her leg, then Jocasta would already be on the podium. In this episode, I start off with talking about low potassium aka hypokalemia. I am working on increasing my potassium and I did not realize all the huge critical health benefits and body functions that potassium offers. I thought I share that with my listeners. I then go into the life of Herbet Stoddard the main focus of our show. Herbert Stoddard was a man of many professions. Taxidermist, citizen ornithologist trained by professionals, and forest ecologist. Herbet Stoddard with the friendship of Aldo Leopold, William McAtee, Paul Errington, Ed Komarek, and others fought against the mainstream in the defense of fire ecology, wildlife, and future conservation. Herbet L. Stoddard founded Tall Timber Research Station and today carries on the legacy of Herbet Stoddard. I hope you enjoy the episode!Check out the book, "Conserving the Southern Longleaf" by Albert. G Wayhttps://www.amazon.com/Conserving-Southern-Longleaf-Ecological-Environmental/dp/0820340170

Lexington, Kentucky-based singer/songwriter Kyle Ayres goes by the name Buck the Taxidermist. The inception of this musical project occurred in 2015 when Kyle, then performing with a string band, felt a compelling need to capture his personal musical expressions. Buck the Taxidermist emerged from fragments of songs that had been simmering in Kyle's mind for years. Whether performing with a band, featuring a rotating lineup of Kentucky friends, or going solo, Kyle's creative direction draws inspiration from a mix of contemporary and vintage influences. His musical palette encompasses the modern sounds of The War on Drugs, Wilco, and Dr. Dog, as well as the timeless melodies of classic songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, and Neil Young. The outcome of this fusion varies, reflecting the ebb and flow of Kyle's creative process. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

On this episode of the Peter Panda Podcast, we're headed to the taxidermist with my friend and mentor, Jerry Andres. Now, back in 2011, I drew a mountain goat tag here in Montana, and after I shot one, this man mounted it for me. It was the first piece of taxidermy I'd ever had done, and it lives in my living room proudly, to this day. Jerry is a bit of a Montana legend, and his stories and perspectives could never be reduced into one podcast. That said, I twisted the beast's arm, and got him to sit down with me, for what I hope is, the first of many recorded conversations together. He's rough around the edges, straight to the point, and his blunt honesty is likely only out shown by his talent. So listen up! We're diving deep into the complexity and artistry of wild game taxidermy with Mr. Jerry Andres.

Over the years as a professional wildlife biologist and hunter/conservationist Larry has had the opportunity to meet and get to know some truly great people. One such person is Ron Porter, who Larry met on a hillside in the early 1970's while on a desert mule deer hunt in New Mexico's Southern Lincoln National Forest. Larry was then a biologist for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and Porter a Game Warden for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. From that first meeting they became dear friends and soon started hunting together. Now retired from both the NMDGF and his taxidermy shop, Larry recently had a chance to again catch up with Ron and get him to talk about some of his adventures, from absolutely scary to downright humorous.
