Host: Nadia Cameron - Editor - Marketing | Associate Publisher Being able to convince others is the most critical skill marketers need to possess – the whole job of marketing is to influence consumers to consider then purchase your brand, after all. But as marketers progress into senior management positions, they also need to get better at getting team members as well as executive leadership and internal stakeholders onside. In episode 2 of The CMO Awards podcast series, powered by Mi3, three leading marketing chiefs who exhibit influence in spades tell us how they’ve done it: Former Google director of marketing ANZ, Aisling Finch, Tourism Australia CMO, Susan Coghill, and Creative Australia executive director of development and partnerships and former ABC director of audiences, Leisa Bacon. For Finch, who spent 13 years with Google, advocating for the local market to global stakeholders was a daily job. Having started with an Australia-first advocacy approach, picking and choosing the metrics that told the story she wanted to tell, she switched a blunt instrument for nuanced engagement and putting herself in the listener’s shoes. “I found it actually quite a disarming strategy to almost go the opposite way of advocacy and say to people: ‘Okay, so we're 55th in population in the world, why are you even spending time with me?’ It’s almost that underdog card. But then you build a bit of credibility – you bring data, bring empathy… and you start to build a story. It's quite disarming and builds trust when you say, ‘interesting, we’re 55th in terms of population, but guess what, we’re 13th on GDP. And look at the willingness of consumers to spend on smartphones, or content,” she says. “Putting yourself in their shoes, being empathetic, and bringing in data without over advocating – I found that to be more effective.” That, and sharing the odd Tim Tam, she quips. Being honest and sharing bad news early is another must CMOs agree on. Coghill, has a “no surprises” rule she applies from team to CEO, finance team, and corporate affairs. “I joke with them I am still a Catholic school girl and feel the need to confess everything and bring everybody into the tent,” she jokes. “But it has served me well, and it has kept my colleagues well informed and able to help me when and where I've needed it.” It’s a similar philosophy for Bacon. “In media – and especially the ABC – you are so heavily scrutinised, you have to be transparent about the good and bad all the time,” she comments. “I would apply that going forward to every job I would do. Transparency builds credibility, it builds trust, but it also is just a good way of working.” Bacon adds: “You can’t actually have influence without credibility, and you need to do things to actually build credibility”. This CMO Awards podcast series is hosted by Nadia Cameron, associate publisher and editor of marketing at Mi3, plus program leader for the CMO Awards.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send me a messageAmid the chaos of the British defeat at Isandlwana on January 22, 1879, 22-year-old Private Samuel Wassall of the 80th Regiment displayed extraordinary bravery. As the Zulu warriors overran the British camp, Wassall, already escaping on horseback, spotted a fellow soldier struggling in the raging Buffalo River, desperately trying to flee the massacre. Without hesitation, Wassall turned back, dismounted under enemy fire, and pulled his comrade from the torrent, placing him on his horse before swimming to safety himself. For his selfless act of courage, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the only recipient from the disastrous battle.More of my podcasts about the Anglo Zulu War 1879The Battle of IsandlwanaSaving the Queen's Colour - the Epic Ride of Coghill & MelvillPrisoner of the ZulusSupport the show by:Becoming a PatronBuy me a CoffeeSupport the show

It makes sense spending Christmas with a Kevin. The Kevin we're talking to this Christmas though sits at the intersection of fighting poverty practically and fighting a growing spiritual malaise. In fact, he was the first and most obvious choice for this year's holiday chat by the fireside, and he joins us this week to not only talk about the crisis around homelessness, but also the accompanying crisis of compassion. Yes, the special Christmas guest this year is  executive director and pastor of Royal City Mission, Kevin Coghill. Homelessness is a city-wide issue, but the focus was downtown this year. Not even 50 yards from St. George's Square are the front doors of the Royal City Mission, which offers services to people who are homeless and living in poverty, which also made it a source of contention for downtown business owners and residents. The RCM was often cited as doing good work for the community while being tagged as the cause for the growing encampments in the square due to its proximity. It's the epitome of damned if you do, damned if you don't, so Coghill and his team decided to do everything could. But Royal City Mission doesn't just deal with corporal needs, they also deal with spiritual ones, which is why Coghill is going to help us reflect on a difficult and dispiriting year. Coghill will join us to talk about how he ended up at Royal City Mission, how the mission has changed over the years, and why change is not always a bad thing for the volunteers and staff at Royal City. He will also talk about the crisis in compassion, the difference between gathering and service, how he deals with disappointment, and the ways he tries to stay optimistic. Coghill will also explain why his doors will remain open to everyone in the community.  So let's spend Christmas with Kevin on this week's Guelph Politicast!  To learn more about Royal City Mission, it's programs and services, and how you can help them out by visiting their website. You can also follow them on social media at rcmguelph on Facebook and Instagram. If you're interested in learning more about the people helped by Royal City Mission, you can get a copy of the book, Stories From the Mission, for a suggested $25 donation. The proceeds go to help fund the Royal City Mission. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. I spoke to Samuel Arbesman about late bloomers. He asked many splendid questions no-one has asked before. With Mark Crowley I discussed some practical aspects of late blooming. On December 5th I am talking to professor Stephen Greenblatt and psychoanalyst Adam Philips about their new book Second Chances, which combines Shakespeare and late blooming. What more could I ask for?I was delighted to talk to Marion Turner, the J.R.R. Tolkien professor of English Language and Literature at Oxford. We talked about how the printing press affected the English language, the effect of science and technology on Chaucer's poetry, how Chaucer influenced Shakespeare, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and plenty more. I could have kept asking questions for another hour! Marion recommends translations of Chaucer (Wright or Coghill), talks about the invention of the iambic pentameter, and discusses Chaucer and the question of influence. I recommend Marion's book Chaucer: A European Life to you all. Remember, you can read a transcript on the webpage version. This is a public episode. Scottish Island Adventures - Skye - with host Coinneach Macleod, the Hebridean Baker and guest Sarah Cruickshank The Isle of Skye  Skye is the largest of the Islands belonging to the Inner Hebrides at 50 miles long. The Isle's picturesque scenery attracts visitors from all over the world who can take on its many hill walks and engage in all kinds of outdoor activities from Kayaking in the beautiful Lochs to spotting protected wildlife species such as the Sea Eagle or Red Deer.  Skye has a rich, vibrant history as the site of both the MacDonald and MacLeod Clan castles, as well as having played a role in the heavily romanticised Jacobite Rebellion led by Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745. Today, the island has a thriving culture scene with plenty of art to take in as well as lots of restaurants, bars, and distilleries to show off the best of Scottish cuisine.  SkyeSkins  SkyeSkins was originally founded by a couple, Clive and Lydia, forty years ago in response to local farmers who would leave their sheep skins to waste. In the time that has passed, SkySkins has become a tanner, maker, and supplier of quality sheepskins, home furnishings, and sustainable clothing. You can visit their tannery and showroom in Waternish as well as a variety of other attractions including a seasonal Yurt cafe, and a boutique shop in Skye's capital Portree.  Cafe Cuil  The story of Cafe Cuil began in Hackney, East London, in 2019 when Isle of Skye native Clare Coghill first opened her Hebridean-inspired cafe. After returning to her homeland, Coghill brought Cafe Cuil with her to Calbost, a town on the west-side of the Island. The cafe uses locally sourced, seasonal produce to create its own spin on brunch and lunch.  Ellis O'Connor Ellis O'Connor is a Scottish artist specialising in contemporary landscape drawings and paintings. She produces most of her work on-site which allows her to incorporate the environment and extreme weather into the art as it is created. As well as using traditional mediums such as oil paints, O'Connor's landscape works have featured natural substances such as sand or dried seaweed to bring in elements of the natural world. The naysayers scoffed when Tourism Australia made a CGI Kangaroo and 1984's Say G'Day tagline the main roll of a $125m tax-funded bet to bring the world back to Australia after three years of fire and plague. One year on, those “doofuses” are eating their words, per Mark Ritson, as the kangaroo eliminates misattribution, boosts consideration, delivers travellers in droves, primes high spending tourists to plan trips for next year and beyond, and remains at the very top end of System1's effectiveness league table. Funnily enough, say Ritson and Tourism Australia CMO, Susan Coghill, following the marketing effectiveness playbook actually works – and the armchair critics were never the intended target. While Tourism Australia is now heading into a statutory review of its creative agency roster, don't expect much to change platform-wise – which means more budget to keep hammering the message home, building brand and delivering demand. Ritson reckons it could run for 20 years without wearing out. Coghill's planning for at least four. Here's how Coghill did her homework, sold it in to stakeholders, went to market and how it's tracking – and why, per Ritson, 20-30 per cent of marketers will never make the top grade because they cannot get comfortable with imperfect marketing datasets.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Too often, we think about Universities and any place of teaching as places where young people learn about the past and form themselves for the professions that will define their career, and their life. While this is partially true, it is very far off from all the academic world is. As a matter of fact, it is the place where the future is made—something that shouldn't be taken lightly under any circumstances.Today's podcast is with Prof. Andrew Woodward, Executive Dean at Edit Cowan University, and Sonia Mackay-Coghill, ECU Vice-President of Engagement. The topic of our conversation is related to the recently revealed project for the realization of ECU City: the boundary-breaking campus is set to reshape the heart of Perth (Australia) and deliver new energy that connects the city's business, cultural and entertainment precincts.  We take this opportunity to discuss what the role of Universities is moving forward and how it could, and should, become the connection point between generations, diverse academic disciplines, businesses, government, and ultimately the pulsating heart that can fuel a city's environment and its citizens. If It is true—and it is—that the only constant in life is change, we must construct academic paths that lead to dynamic and ever-evolving careers. To do so, ECU has involved business partners and the government to help shape this vision of a university that mixes Creativity and Technology like it has never been done before.Technology is undoubtedly fueling the digital transformation that is changing our society, but humanity is fueling it all. Creativity allows us to think outside the box, envisioning our future, experimenting with new ideas, communicating them, and of course, being sure that all of this serves humanity on a global scale.ECU City will be a place where technology, industry, and creativity meet to deliver innovative thinkers, adaptive learners, and global citizens who will be the leaders of tomorrow.Join us on this exciting journey into the University Of The Future.____________________________GuestsSonia Mackay-CoghillOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/sonia-mackay-coghill-1a9142157/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/CoghillSoniaAndrew WoodwardOn LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-woodward-477726b/On Twitter | https://twitter.com/EdithCowanUni____________________________ResourcesLearn more about this project: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/claudia-bertorello-kell-25145427_ecu-ecucity-opportunityunbound-activity-6832462501477806080-LMLG/About The ECU City ProgramECU City is the centrepiece of the Perth City Deal, a collaboration between the Australian Government , The Government of Western Australia and City of Perth.
