On Saturday night, the Lakers, Mavericks and Jazz completed a three-team trade that sent Luka Doncic to Los Angeles and Anthony Davis to Dallas. The Lakers received Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris from the Mavericks, Dallas acquired Davis, Max Christie and the Lakers' 2029 first-round pick. The Jazz received Jalen Hood-Schifino, the LA Clippers' 2025 second-round pick and the Mavericks' 2025 second-round selection. On the surface, the trade was driven by basketball-related considerations—future player contracts, team dynamics, player performance. But what if larger strategic goals were at play...? This week, Ben and Chris discuss some off-court factors (foundations) that may have also contributed to the massive blockbuster trade. Need help getting the Patreon RSS in your podcast app? The Lakers still have designs on moving up in the Western Conference, and the narrowest of windows in which to get it done. There are opportunities. The Suns, for example, have an insanely brutal schedule over their last 10 games, and the Lakers do own the tiebreaker against Phoenix. Sacramento is still in reach, and has a harder schedule than LA. But if the Lakers want to make any of this happen - and want to avoid the possibility of dropping to 10th, or even worse, open the door for a red hot Houston Rockets team, tonight's game at home against a moribund Philadelphia 76ers is simply one they should win, and must win. Must, must, must. Must. And it's those "should win" games where the Lakers have tended to struggle, playing down to the level of competition. Can't happen tonight. Meanwhile, the Lakers announced that Jalen Hood-Schifino will undergo a procedure to repair a disc issue in his back, and while no timetable was announced, it would certainly figure that he'll miss a good chunk of time, possibly the rest of the year. No impact on the big club... which really is the jumping off point for the conversation. That losing Hood-Schifino makes no difference for their fortunes shines a light on the decision to draft him in the first place over players more capable of playing an NBA role as rookies. But that question - did they draft the right guy for THIS year, is a different one than whether Hood-Schifino is a bust. It's waaaaay too early for that. And meanwhile, his stats with South Bay are actually quite good. It's just a shame his season has been so short, both because he's been injured a lot and because the Lakers couldn't send him to the G-League nearly as much as they wanted because of the injury to Gabe Vincent. Finally, a great question from a viewer on the YT page: With Cam Reddish back, would it make sense to put him in the starting lineup in order to boost the defense, and bring some scoring to the second unit?  HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers must win on Friday. There's just no way around it.  SEGMENT 2: Hood-Schifino needs back surgery, which opens up the debate about drafting him in the first place.  SEGMENT 3: Would a change in the lineup make sense?  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Stitch FixStyle that makes you feel as good as you look—get started today at StitchFix.com/LOCKEDONNissanOur friends at Nissan have a lineup of SUV's with the capabilities to take your adventure to the next level. (00:00-23:37) – Query & Company opens on a Thursday with Jake Query, Jimmy Cook, and producer Eddie Garrison sharing their thoughts on the Indiana Hoosiers losing again. Jake goes on a rant about how it's tiring talking about the same issues with Indiana underneath Mike Woodson this season. Jimmy states that he's not going anywhere because of the comments Woodson made earlier this week and how IU can't afford to keep firing and hiring coaches every three years. (23:37-41:51) – Former Indiana Hoosier Joe Hillman joins Jake & Jimmy on the show to share his perspective as to what is wrong with Indiana basketball right now. He states that the transfer portal has been one of the worst things in college basketball, doesn't believe that Mike Woodson is putting players in their best position to succeed, and explains what situations the players need to be put into to succeed to close the season strong going into the Big Ten Tournament. (41:51-42:35) – Hour one concludes quickly with Jake and Jimmy previewing their upcoming conversation with Tony East. (42:35-1:06:15) – Tony East from Forbes Sports, Sports Illustrated, Locked On Pacers, and WTHR makes his weekly stop on Query & Company with Jake Query & Jimmy Cook. Their conversation starts with Tony's storylines for the remainder of the season for the Pacers. He accesses what kind of minutes Jarace Walker, Ben Sheppard, and Obi Toppin could have in the final 26 games. Finally, he compares Walker's situation to Pascal Siakam's rookie season with the Toronto Raptors that's helped him become the player he is. (1:06:15-1:19:40) – Earlier in the program, Jake and Jimmy went on a rant about Indiana basketball. This time around they center their conversation around Mike Woodson's and how he didn't plan ahead to replace Jalen Hood-Schifino. Additionally, they try to be optimistic about next season, but the Hoosiers aren't giving them any reason to be. (1:19:40-1:23:53) – The one o'clock hour concludes Jake sharing a tweet from a listener about Indiana's guard situation. Additionally, Jake shares the idea of a segment that will debut next Friday. (1:23:53-1:45:01) – Former Big Ten coach and current analyst, Bruce Weber, joins the show to share his thoughts on Indiana's loss last night to Nebraska, explains what kind of player he sees in Gabe Cupps next season, and states that Indiana needs a couple guards for next season. Additionally, he touches on the Illinois collapse against Penn State, states that he felt like Purdue started slipping in recent games prior to the loss to Ohio State and picks a team that he thinks could win the Big Ten Tournament that's not at the top of the conference standings. (1:45:01-1:49:51) – Yesterday Jake and Jimmy came up with the idea of playing tournament in Kalamazoo featuring the worst teams in college basketball. The ultimate loser ends up getting a chance to compete in the NCAA Tournament. (1:49:51-2:05:06) – Today's show ends with the JCook Plays of the Day. Additionally, college basketball analyst Robbie Hummel joins the show to preview Purdue's game tonight against Rutgers, doesn't believe that Purdue is starting to feel pressure of the NCAA Tournament with March quickly approaching, states that this is the best team that Matt Painter has ever had at Purdue, and lists all the problems that the Indiana Hoosiers have had this season.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's a very, very busy week in the NBA with the trade deadline coming up on the 8th. And, of course, that means the Lakers tied to any available player on the market, because that's how this works. But while before the chatter was built mostly around Atlanta guard Dejounte Murray, the Lakers now have to fill a massive hole left by the injury to Jarred Vanderbilt. The Lakers now have a gaping hole to fill, in addition to any improvements they want to make in the backcourt, or anywhere else. And the stuff they have available doesn't change. It's one pick, it's D'Angelo Russell, it's (maybe) Rui Hachimura and an injured Gabe Vincent, plus whatever appeal guys like Max Christie and Jalen Hood-Schifino might have.So which holes do they try to fill? Do they keep more assets for this summer, roll the dice on this year and hope for the best? It's not an easy time to be Rob Pelinka.Meanwhile, one of the guys on the list of potential trade assets—Christie—was also one of their most impactful players in Saturday's win over the Knicks. Will Darvin Ham continue leaning heavily into the youngster for his defensive versatility (as well as some outside shooting) with Vanderbilt and Cam Reddish unavailable? Does the (new again) starting lineup mean that Rui Hachimura finally gets the PT Lakers fans have been clamoring for?Saturday it made sense to play Taurean Prince... but that's not going to be the case every game. Finally, what exactly was LeBron talking about with the hourglass emoji last week? And has he made any decisions around his player option for next year? The answer to the latter is no, and the former is "I'm not telling." Or so it was ahead of the game Saturday night. So anything to read into either?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers have a major hole to fill with Jarred Vanderbilt on the shelf.SEGMENT 2: How should the Lakers try to address their shortcomings at the deadline. Dejounte Murray Scouting Report: Is he an Upgrade for the Lakers over D'Angelo Russell?

The Lakers have a big decision coming. They are, by most reports, the frontrunners to acquire Atlanta guard Dejounte Murray. The 27 year old is enjoying arguably his best season as a pro, averaging over 21 points a game, on 47.1% shooting and 39% from beyond the arc (both career highs). Reputationally, at least, Murray is a solid defender. No question in his first few years in the league, he built a high end reputation on that side of the ball. So would he improve the Lakers, should the rumored deal (D'Angelo Russell, a draft pick, and perhaps an addition like Jalen Hood-Schifino) go through? We talked about it with Brad Rowland, host of Locked On Hawks. He's done the hard work of watching Atlanta basketball, and therefore has a front row seat into the Murray experience. What does he do well? How pure a point guard is he? Where do the points come from? Is the outside shooting a mirage, or something sustainable? What about on the other end? Is his reputation as a defender still deserved? Where has he fallen off in Atlanta, and could it be restored playing higher leverage games with a team trying to compete? The reasons for making a deal extend beyond this year's team. If the Lakers really like Murray and see him as a potentially foundational piece, acquiring him now makes sense. But would it be smarter to hold on to assets into the summer, when bigger trades might be had? You can only trade players/picks once, after all. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Scouting Dejounte Murray with Brad Rowland. Looking at his offense. SEGMENT 2: What about the defense? SEGMENT 3: Reaction. Multiple Reports: Darvin Ham Has Jeanie Buss' Support. What Does that Mean Moving Forward?

Darvin Ham probably wasn't going to be fired if the Lakers lost Sunday, or even if they were blown out in a listless performance that reminded folks of the Miami game. But that type of showing would have cranked up the heat to extremely uncomfortable levels, where decisions can start becoming more self-fulfilling. Critically, though, the baseline for Ham was one in which the organization is not inclined to make a move. Reporting on Monday reinforced that Lakers owner Jeanie Buss is fully supportive of Ham, and there is no indication that GM Rob Pelinka is itching to make a move, either. But what about LeBron James, who spoke with far more enthusiasm about Ty Lue Sunday than Ham? That said, one game does not turn things around. Tonight's game against Toronto is another opportunity to show not only that Sunday wasn't a mirage, but that moments of reasonably solid play even during this down stretch can be sustained, replicated and then elevated. Can the Lakers bring the same level of intensity on the defensive side against the Raptors? Can the score with more efficiency in order to take a little pressure off the D? Can D'Angelo Russell build on the impact he had Sunday? There are still a lot of questions left to answer, and a lot of games the Lakers need to win over this home-heavy stretch of games. Meanwhile, the Lakers signed another 2-way contract -- former Portland PG Skylar Mays. He's a 26-year old far better suited to soaking up emergency minutes in the backcourt, compared to Jalen Hood-Schifino. The Lakers aren't interested in developing Mays, and this will let JHS get real burn with the G-League squad. It's a move the Lakers needed to make. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: How much cooler did the hot seat get for Darvin Ham after Sunday's win? SEGMENT 2: Why don't the Lakers want to let Ham go? Reporting on Monday reinforced that Lakers owner Jeanie Buss is fully supportive of Ham, and there is no indication that GM Rob Pelinka is itching to make a move, either. But what about LeBron James, who spoke with far more enthusiasm about Ty Lue Sunday than Ham?That said, one game does not turn things around. Tonight's game against Toronto is another opportunity to show not only that Sunday wasn't a mirage, but that moments of reasonably solid play even during this down stretch can be sustained, replicated and then elevated. Can the Lakers bring the same level of intensity on the defensive side against the Raptors? Can the score with more efficiency in order to take a little pressure off the D?Can D'Angelo Russell build on the impact he had Sunday? There are still a lot of questions left to answer, and a lot of games the Lakers need to win over this home-heavy stretch of games.Meanwhile, the Lakers signed another 2-way contract -- former Portland PG Skylar Mays. He's a 26-year old far better suited to soaking up emergency minutes in the backcourt, compared to Jalen Hood-Schifino. The Lakers aren't interested in developing Mays, and this will let JHS get real burn with the G-League squad. It's a move the Lakers needed to make.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: How much cooler did the hot seat get for Darvin Ham after Sunday's win?SEGMENT 2: Why don't the Lakers want to let Ham go?SEGMENT 3: What does LeBron think of Ham?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Jase MedicalEmpower yourself when you purchase a Jase Case, providing you with a personal supply of 5 antibiotics that treat 50+ infections. Laker Film Room - Dedicated to the Study of Lakers Basketball

The Lakers made some roster moves, waiving D'Moi Hodge and Alex Fudge from their two-way contracts and signing forward Dylan Windler and point guard Skylar Mays to replace them. Pete, Mike, and Darius discuss these moves, with a look at how the Mays addition impacts rookie Jalen Hood-Schifino and allows him to get more minutes in the G-League for reps and court time as part of his development. And then later, the guys discuss the team's ongoing pursuit of workable lineups -- particularly the groups that play with LeBron and AD, which have not been as productive this season as in year's past.  Learn more about your ad choices. The Lakers got a rare day of practice on Wednesday, and Darvin Ham certainly hopes that it could help iron out some of the rough spots the new starting lineup has experienced in the two games in which it has been deployed. Not surprisingly, he was asked a lot about the lineup meeting the media. “I think the pros is the size, the athleticism, the ability to switch across the board. I think the cons are just different actions, not having a traditional point guard can be challenging at times," Ham said. "But at the end of the day, again we have stuff in our package where we can still get to really good stuff. Get Bron some good looks, get AD some good looks, Taurean, Cam, Vando being able to slash and be effective at the rim. I think it's more good than bad.” (via Lauren Jones)All of this makes sense in theory, but in practice is Ham asking players to do things they're really not well equipped to do?Particularly since Vanderbilt had his hand wrapped and might be limited in what he can do handling/dribbling/passing the ball? For his part, Vando believes a little practice time is probably what they need. It can't hurt, but will it really make that big a difference? Finally, Jaime Jaquez is crushing it for the Heat this season. He was drafted one spot after the Lakers took Jalen Hood-Schifino, who has barely played thanks to injury, but clearly isn't ready to contribute to a high caliber team yet.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers actually get to practice. Injuries have become a significant issue for the Lakers as they take the court tonight against the Heat in Miami. Taurean Prince should return to the floor, fingers crossed, but Gabe Vincent, Jared Vanderbilt, Rui Hachimura and Jalen Hood-Schifino remain out, and now Jaxson Hayes has found his way to the injury report as well. Most teams would struggle missing multiple players from their rotation, even while the stars are in uniform. But the Lakers have other issues that have shown themselves to be a problem, even before the injury bug started biting. Namely, the Lakers have been hammered on the glass, and as a result are giving up a ton of second chance points (while also doing very little to generate second chance points, themselves). Not unrelated, the Lakers are consistently falling behind thanks to bad first quarters. Even the games they've won have been come-from-behind. Meaning the Lakers are constantly playing uphill. All of this stuff was in full display, by the way, against the Magic in Orlando over the weekend.Knowing what the issues are and managing to fix said issues are not necessarily the same thing, but the Lakers need to bridge that gap ASAP, because few teams can be as bleh as they are on the glass and contend, and the idea of playing from behind through the season and into the playoffs and expecting success isn't even slightly realistic.Darvin Ham has highlighted the problems, and says the Lakers are working hard to fix them. One them that will help is getting the full lineup back. Or, if that's not an option, just getting Vanderbilt back. He offers a skill set (defense, rebounding) that is badly needed right now. Fair to say his value has been demonstrated in his absence. Finally, an interesting comment left on the YouTube page regarding the on-court pairing of D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves. Are their strengths as a pairing outweighed by their deficiencies? Why was it a very positive combo last year, and such a negative combo to this point this season?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Why are the Lakers getting beat up on the glass?SEGMENT 2: Why are the Lakers consistently getting off to bad starts?SEGMENT 3: Can Reaves and Russell play together effectively? There is still a buzz around the Lakers following Wednesday's incredibly exciting 130-125 OT win over the Clippers at the Crypt. It was a game that featured big comebacks on both sides, incredible performances by each team's stars, big moments for role players, and—thankfully from the Lakers' perspective—the first real moments of productivity from Austin Reaves this season. It came after arguably his worst half of basketball as a pro, where he missed four of five shots and tied a career high with five turnovers (that's his career high for a game, not a half) and somewhat ironically, had the Lakers not been so shorthanded on the evening, missing Taurean Prince, Gabe Vincent, Rui Hachimura, Jalen Hood-Schifino and Jared Vanderbilt, there's a non-zero chance that Darvin Ham might have put Reaves on the bench.Instead, he was out there by necessity, and finally found a groove about halfway through the third quarter, and remained a key contributor through the rest of the game, including big moments in OT.Basketball is a team game, and it's impossible to pin performance of a team on one player, but if there is one guy who has negatively impacted the team through play below expectations (as opposed to simply not being available) it's Reaves in a walk. Is this the beginning of a turnaround? Hard to say. The Lakers head out on the road, and we'll all need to see some sustained quality play before declaring the slump over... but clearly he looked like he found some mojo after a few good plays. There was much more energy and confidence.Meanwhile, winning that game, shorthanded, changes the way you feel about the first five games of the season. Now they're 3-2, having played five playoff contenders (if you think Orlando can make it in the East) four of the West's best teams, playing through injury. They've shown grit, and guys like Christian Wood have bought in big early.Wood, in fact, has been so solid defensively that those lineups some (including your hosts) thought wouldn't be sustainable -- LeBron, Davis and Wood -- have been phenomenal from a net rating standpoint. Some of that is perhaps underestimating the matchup problems the Lakers could create with that trio... but a lot is that Wood has just been way better than his reputation as a defender. Because it hasn't been about his scoring.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Austin Reaves has a bounce back game. In theory, it should have been the Clippers who were short on players, having executed a significant trade for James Harden that for the time being, at least, left them with fewer live bodies to put on the floor. But in reality, it was the Lakers. Jarred Vanderbilt was already out. Rui Hachimura is now in the concussion protocol. Gabe Vincent was downgraded to doubtful, then just to out thanks to a back injury. Jalen Hood-Schifino? Already shelved with a bum knee. And as the team was warming up, Taurean Prince's knee flared up.So it's not necessarily surprising that the Clippers got off to a red hot start, running up a 19-point lead on the purple and gold early in the game, and once again it looked like the Lakers would be boat raced by their cross-building rivals. (And meanwhile, Austin Reaves was so bad in the first half - five turnovers, 1-5 from the floor) that the Lakers might have been better off if he was hurt, too.)But rather than pack it in, LA kept grinding. They got it down to 13 by the half, and blew the Clippers up in the third. Eventually, they won in OT.LeBron James was incredible. Anthony Davis was superb. D'Angelo Russell was a huge reason the Lakers were in position to win down the stretch, and eventually did in OT. But Reaves had his first stretch of good minutes of the season in the second half. Shorthanded Lakers Beat Clippers in OT, 130-125, in Gutsy Team Effort

And as the team was warming up, Taurean Prince's knee flared up. So it's not necessarily surprising that the Clippers got off to a red hot start, running up a 19-point lead on the purple and gold early in the game, and once again it looked like the Lakers would be boat raced by their cross-building rivals. (And meanwhile, Austin Reaves was so bad in the first half - five turnovers, 1-5 from the floor) that the Lakers might have been better off if he was hurt, too.) But rather than pack it in, LA kept grinding. They got it down to 13 by the half, and blew the Clippers up in the third. Eventually, they won in OT. LeBron James was incredible. Anthony Davis was superb. D'Angelo Russell was a huge reason the Lakers were in position to win down the stretch, and eventually did in OT. But Reaves had his first stretch of good minutes of the season in the second half. Christian Wood was a MASSIVE contributor. And surprise starter Cam Reddish came up big as well. It was a night of stars (the LAC's were amazing as well) and of really good, high intensity basketball. Much more than you normally get in the fifth game of the season. The Lakers got some strong frontline performances in their preseason opener Saturday against the Warriors, as D'Angelo Russell and Anthony Davis put up big numbers in short minutes. But two of the big headliners weren't in the lineup. Monday in Vegas against the Nets, LeBron James and Austin Reaves suited up for the first time this season... and looked pretty good, too!LeBron looked like he had found the bounce that had been stripped during the playoffs thanks to that foot tendon issue, going for 10/3/5 in 17 minutes. Reaves hit his first shot of the night (a triple) en route to 18 points on 5-7 shooting and 4-6 from 3. All told, the Lakers starters (which included Taurean Prince on a night where Jarred Vanderbilt was unavailable thanks to a heel injury) were a robust 13-23 from downtown. The shooting, which was good on Saturday, continued. And it was an argument for why Prince would be a good choice for that fifth starter role. He would provide low-usage floor spacing, while still bringing the same on-court hustle and energy of Vanderbilt, though not quite as much defensive versatility and definitely not as much rebounding. Vanderbilt, on the other hand, provides that rebounding and extremely high levels of energy and effort... but unless that corner 3 becomes a true weapon, can create some congestion offensively.Interestingly, Hachimura's 19 points on 8-14 from the floor was a good argument for him not starting. It was clear last year, and seems pretty clear again that given the offensive talent in the starting lineup, he'll have far more opportunities to assert himself as a scorer coming off the bench. And it's not like he can't come in as a sixth man, and then finish games, too. There's no rule against that sort of thing. So what about the other guys? Maxwell Lewis is very raw, but man does that kid have some athleticism. He showed it off in the second half on Monday. Jalen Hood-Schifino is obviously a work in progress, but showed more of what the Lakers see in him as a point guard, not just through five assists, but also the variety of passes he's obviously comfortable making. Christian Wood... did he bounce back from a disappointing preseason opener? Integrating him in ways that maximize his skills without over-catering might take a minute. Did Jaxson Hayes follow up a promising debut with a good second game?
