In the first of what will hopefully be a long-running series of interviews with luminaries of the grappling scene, mat maestro Daniel Makabe, in a chat recorded just before this year's Wrestlemania weekend, takes us through a hand-picked mixtape of his favourite puro matches, and tells us how they influenced his career and his thinking. With a diverse array of wrestling styles covered, it's a wide-ranging discussion that was an absolute blast to record, and the tangents on punk and football are very much in keeping with the PPP ethos. We learned a lot, and are sure you will too. This week on Wrestling Omakase we talk two Kobashi-Akiyama bouts, some FMW and Toryumon and a WCW classic! If you haven't listened to a 5 Matches episode yet, every week John and the guest each choose 2 matches to watch and talk about on the episode. Then we each choose a third match, which is put up to a vote on the @wrestleomakase Twitter account, letting the listeners choose our fifth and final match of the week! It's a fun retro format featuring all sorts of different wrestling! John is joined by JoJo Remy (@jojo_runs), ex-host of the Japan Audio Wrestling podcast and very longtime Japanese wrestling fan. JoJo is making his debut on Omakase but he and John go way back to John's very first trip to Japan in March 2016, right around the same time JoJo first moved to the country, so there's a lot of reminiscing and general "we've been watching this stuff a long time" discussion. JoJo also discusses what life in Japan has been like for the last four years and much more. Then we get into this week's 5 matches, and here they all are in order of their discussion on the episode, with links so you could watch them all: 1. Jun Akiyama vs. Kenta Kobashi, AJPW 7/24/98 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhrWd4BHcKQ) 2. Jun Akiyama vs. Kenta Kobashi, NOAH 8/6/00 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoHNsg55dqU) 3. Jinsei Shinzaki v Mr. Gannosuke, FMW 4/21/98 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QnS7N1homE&feature=youtu.be&t=1218, match starts at 20:18) 4. CIMA/Don Fujii/TARU vs. Dragon Kid/Masaaki Mochizuki/Ryo Saito vs. Darkness Dragon/Genki Horiguchi/Magnum TOKYO, Toryumon Japan 7/7/02 (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4f0fjm) 5. Sting & Lex Luger vs. Rick & Scott Steiner, WCW 5/15/91 (WWE Network: https://watch.wwe.com/episode/Superbrawl-1-9389) This obviously gives us a ton to talk about, including: early Western puro fandom (and their extreme Kawada bias), NOAH vs. the rest of Japanese wrestling in the early 00s and how that may have had an effect on a quickly dropped Akiyama move, different eras of FMW, 2002 Toryumon Japan stables, LEX LUGER DEFENSE SQUAD and much more! The first half of 1998 had FMW saw the debut of Mr. Gannosuke, Kintaro Kanemura, Kodo Fuyuki, Hido and others to form Team No Respect, FMW moves to PPV, Mr. Gannosuke emerges as the top heel and feuds with Masato Tanaka, Shinzaki and Hayabusa, Onita takes a lot of losses and sees his position in FMW in jeopardy as he tries to make moves in ECW and much more
1997 begin with Flying Kid Ichihara and Mr. Gannosuke returning to FMW without Tarzan Goto to start the long feud with Hayabusa who went on to debut for All Japan in 1997. Onita met with WWF and Vince McMahon about collaborating in the future, Megumi Kudo main evented the big Summer event for her retirement, Onita is back in FMW as a wrestler and pulling some office strings, IWA and W*ing have a few more revivals and much more.
We are at a turning point for FMW. Atsushi Onita has retired from FMW not only as a wrestler but also as the owner of the company. Hayabusa returns to Japan to emerge as the ace of FMW but Tarzan Goto (you won't believe the angle Onita had lined up for him), Mr. Gannosuke and Flying Kid Ichihara are on their way out. Tenryu and WAR find themselves at odds with Onita's ego, Cactus Jack debuts for IWA, W*ing restarts with ECW on their side and so so much more in this must listen episode.
With Mr. Pogo leaving to form W*ing FMW marched on in 1991. They bet it all and won a Kawasaki Stadium show, they introduced yet another match as an exploding cage deathmatch, Onita became a television star, the future Mr. Gannosuke and Hayabusa became regulars and FMW ran a tag team tournament that brought tons of interesting players to the table.
It's a fun retro format featuring all sorts of different wrestling!John is joined by JoJo Remy (@jojo_runs), ex-host of the Japan Audio Wrestling podcast and very longtime Japanese wrestling fan. Then we get into this week's 5 matches, and here they all are in order of their discussion on the episode, with links so you could watch them all:1. Jun Akiyama vs. Kenta Kobashi, AJPW 7/24/98 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhrWd4BHcKQ)2. Jun Akiyama vs. Kenta Kobashi, NOAH 8/6/00 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoHNsg55dqU)3. Jinsei Shinzaki v Mr. Gannosuke, FMW 4/21/98 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QnS7N1homE&feature=youtu.be&t=1218, match starts at 20:18)4. CIMA/Don Fujii/TARU vs. Dragon Kid/Masaaki Mochizuki/Ryo Saito vs. Darkness Dragon/Genki Horiguchi/Magnum TOKYO, Toryumon Japan 7/7/02 (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4f0fjm)5. Sting & Lex Luger vs. Rick & Scott Steiner, WCW 5/15/91 (WWE Network: https://watch.wwe.com/episode/Superbrawl-1-9389)This obviously gives us a ton to talk about, including: early Western puro fandom (and their extreme Kawada bias), NOAH vs. the rest of Japanese wrestling in the early 00s and how that may have had an effect on a quickly dropped Akiyama move, different eras of FMW, 2002 Toryumon Japan stables, LEX LUGER DEFENSE SQUAD and much more! This week's Wrestling Omakase is brought to you by Roman and ZipRecruiter!
