After the false start of Episode 28, which is best summed up as a cruel and extended jape on our weary fanbase, the Puro Pourri Podcast boys are back to actually (genuinely, we promise this time) begin to dissect the storied careers of the Funks in Japan. We kick off by going back to the 1970s and comparing Dory and Terry's efforts in NWA title matches in that decade. Who will thrill us and who will bore us to tears? Gee, I fucking wonder. MATCHES: Jack Brisco (c) vs. Dory Funk Jr. (Two out of Three Falls Match for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship) (AJPW New Year NWA Champion Series 1974, Day 5) (AJPW, 27 January 1974) Terry Funk (c) vs. Jumbo Tsuruta (Two out of Three Falls Match for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship) (AJPW New Year NWA Champion Series 1976, Day 17) (AJPW, 11 June 1976)

This past week saw the one year passing of Terry Funk as well as Dory Funk Jr. wrestling at 83 years old. We thought it would be a good time to revisit the time that Terry Funk came into Smoky Mountain Wrestling as part of the Jim Cornette/Bob Armstrong feud. This was episode #3 and originally aired on the North South Connection Pod Feed where you can also find older episodes before coming to The Backbone!

We did it all last week! Yes, 28.1.1984 Mid Atlantic Wrestling packed last week's show with such a lot of stuff there ain'tuch left this week. Except Jimmy Valiant stripping Dory Funk Jr, that is...
I had the opportunity to be the special guest announcer for Dory Funk Jr's latest wrestling show dedicated to his tag team partner and Bang TV world champion Osamu Nishimura who is battling illness. I opened the show with a rendition of Nishimura's favorite song “New York, New York” to encourage his swift recovery and great health. Next time, we will sing it together. —David Gornoski

This week on Under The Ring: Pro Wrestling Conversations, we're joined by multi-time Hall of Famer Gerald Brisco, one of the most notable figures in modern pro wrestling history. We discuss his tag team with his brother Jack, one of the best NWA Worlds Heavyweight champons ever and their rivalry with Terry Funk and Dory Funk Jr. We discuss his role as a WWE official, both as a scout in finding athletes like Brock Lesnar and Shelton Benjamin, but also as an agent and working directly with Vince McMahon. We also talk about the day he and his brother found a young bass guitarist who eventually became Hulk Hogan.
Chris Hero recently made his return to the wrestling ring after a 3-year absence, and explains why West Coast Pro Wrestling was the perfect place to do it. He talks about the timing and his opponent, old rival Timothy Thatcher. He also talks about his gig as coach and producer at AEW, and the role that Sonjay Dutt played in it. Chris shares a bunch of great stories about his own mentors, Dory Funk Jr. and Tracy Smothers, and the lessons he learned from them that he passes on to his own students now. He also details his time at WWE & NXT, including his original tryout, his first run as Kassius Ohno, his relationship with Dusty Rhodes, and his original firing. He explains how and why he was brought back as a producer and coach, and what led to his departure during the pandemic. And of course he talks all about his longtime friendship with Claudio Castagnoli and their run as the Kings Of Wrestling on the indies and at ROH, and their incredible matches with The Briscoe Brothers.
