Send us a textThis might be the most fun episode we ever produced. As we look back at George H. W. Bush , Pro wrestling fan. With the help of Charleston Post and Courier articles written by their star reporter Mike Mooneyham, we will examine the Bush connection to the world of Professional wrestling and especially his fondness for wrestling's greatest athlete, "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair. We will hear about Bush's friendship with promoter Paul Boesch, his lifelong connection to "Chief" Ed "Wahoo" McDaniel, and his later friendship with "The Big Cat" Ernie Ladd. We will also hit the trail , in 1992, on the whistlestop tour that took George Bush through the Carolinas, with the biggest sports star of them all, Ric Flair. It was at a rally in Spartanburg S.C. where our Host, Randal Wallace, was able to maneuver himself up near the front with a little help from Martha Bishop, the sister of our Senator Strom Thurmond, so he would be nearly front row for the rally at the Train Depot, that would feature not only the President, but Governor Carrol Campbell, Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler, Senator Strom Thurmond, Congressional Candidate Bob Inglis, and our host's childhood sports hero, Ric Flair. To this day, as you will hear, it remains Wallace's favorite memory of any in his over 45 years in politics. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any footage from the Spartanburg rally, but we do have some examples of George Bush out on his 1992 whistle-stop tour, and we do have some later moments from the 2008 Presidential campaign where Ric Flair would return to the trail to campaign for Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. It was at the event for Huckabee in Myrtle Beach that our host again became the focus of attention as he stood with a folder full of wrestling magazines hoping to get them autographed by Ric Flair, at the Huckabee rally, while serving as the Rudy Giuliani Horry County Chairman. It made the news, in two articles in the Sun News political blog Poli-tick-Tock. We will look back at that blog too, and feature the Columbia Mike Huckabee Rally with Chuck Norris and Ric Flair. As you will hear, Hulk Hogan and Donald Trump were actually not the first Pro wrestler and President to headline a Presidential campaign event!! On this episode of What Happened When, Tony and Conrad a look at an angle that defined Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling in the 1970's and was one of the biggest, if not the biggest part of Tony's fandom growing up in Virginia. Blackjack Mulligan vs Ric Flair featured two of the biggest heels in Jim Crockett Promotions finally splitting into a blood feud. The suggestion comes from DJ Turn Up of Stone Mountain, Georgia, who wrote: "...I love to hear how giddy Tony gets when he talks about his fandom and he talks about how this is one of his favorite rivalries. I would like to know more info on it..." The link to watch along is here from YouTube:https://youtu.be/mFe7D0kFrTg?si=aFUgsI87agVjdIxa Plus, We dive into Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling maybe for the last time in a while. The "Network" is officially gone, and the "Cock" has taken over, so we are not sure when we will be able to continue our look back at this great JCP syndicated show. But on this week's edition a change is in the air. Even though the open and the logo say "Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling", Bob Caudle intros the show as "NWA Pro Wrestling." Plus we are going to see the breakup between Jimmy Valiant and Pez Whatley; see Wahoo McDaniel in action (as well as a pretty entertaining confrontation between the Chief and Precious); hear from Ric Flair and Arn Anderson. We hope you enjoy this episode and we hope to get back to this show soon. As Bob Caudle would say: "...so long, for now..." As we say farewell to the name "All The WrestleManias," another icon of the wrestling business is saying farewell. Though we talked for almost 2 hours, we barely scratched the surface of the story of the man that is George Pantas. You may not have heard of George, but everyone that you have heard of has heard of him. George is the source of some of the greatest wrestling footage Vice TV and the WWE ever acquired to tell the story of the lost days of the territories. A young Greek immigrant, son of a tinsmith, locked on to wrestling because you didn't need to know English to understand what was happening, and that blossomed into an incredible love affair. George is finally hanging it up after 50 years active in the wrestling business. He will be saying his goodbyes on December 2 at VCW's Tidings of Destruction. George has agreed to bear witness to us about the incredible wrestling moments he has experienced and provides insight to the greatest minds of wrestling. Of course, George knows everyone, from Ric Flair to Billy Corgan, Wahoo McDaniel to Tony Schiavone, and countless others. His story dovetails beautifully with our conversation with David Crockett. You don't want to miss this. George is an incredible human being and an absolute delight. This was Starrcade main event match 1-of-2 between Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes. However, this one...was for money! Soooo much money on the line in this show. Not only was a $1 million check on the line in the main event (along with, ya know, the World Heavyweight Title), but money was also on the line in the match of Tully Blanchard vs. Ricky Steamboat (along with, ya know, the World Television Title). This show was very repetitive in that respect. Joe Frazier was also the the referee for the main event, was supposed to be a babyface, and Dusty Rhodes (who was ALSO supposed to be a babyface) came off as a complete s**t heel against him and Ric Flair! Also on this show, we get the US Title on the line in a geriatric showdown between Wahoo McDaniel and "karate master" (not joking) "Superstar" Billy Graham. We also see matches for the NWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Title, NWA Brass Knuckles Title, NWA Florida Heavyweight Title, and NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title, plus a bunch of other craziness. We break that all down! Also, in the news, we discuss the WWF's business being on shaky ground, the drawing power or possible lack thereof of Hulk Hogan, Japan's business is taking off, the American territories are trying to hang on while "the big two" are going national, Rocky III looking very different if history was slightly altered, the Road Warriors throwing their weight around, an infamous moment on 20/20 that blacklisted a small-time wrestler, and much more! This week we discuss some of the most memorable brawlers and bleeders in AWA history. These are wrestlers who had wild, in-and-out of the ring matches; as all as those who were known to bleed quite a bit. Some names on the list include Gene Kiniski, Blackjack Lanza, Wahoo McDaniel and more. RATE, REVIEW, AND SUBSCRIBE! Brought to you by our friends at Sotastick. On Episode 47 of NWA Crock 'n' Roll, the boys continue their journey through May 1986. Topics include; the usual top-notch interviews from Arn, Tully and JJ Dillion, another rant about Wahoo McDaniel after a TV title match which derails the show for a while, a rare Arn and Flair tag team match on television, an underwhelming debut and a territory spotlight from Alabama which surprises everyone pitting Brad Armstrong and Tim Horner vs. Tom Prichard and Not-My-Mr. Perfect Jerry Stubbs!
Les Thatcher and Vic Sosa give their thoughts on the MJF situation and whether or not anything similar might have happened in the territories, which leads to some interesting stories involving Ernie Ladd and Wahoo McDaniel. We also look at how our Double or Nothing predictions turned out and discuss the two big matches on this weekends WWE Hell in a Cell show. Thanks for listening and have a great weekend~!
Kris & David are back this week by Between The Sheets Patreon subscriber David Davis (@GratefulSeconds) to discuss the week-plus that was March 18-29, 1985. You too can pick your own show by donating $25, $50 (join us for a segment), or $100 (join us for the whole show) on our Patreon. We start off by talking about Jim Crockett Promotions, where they are heading to TBS, and we talk about how that will work out for them, Mid-South, & the WWF, including the ACTUAL story of why the WWF sold their time slots to Crockett. Elsewhere in JCP, we also talk about Magnum T.A. winning the U.S. Title from Wahoo McDaniel and how Crockett's expansion is in full swing, among other things. We then go to Japan, talking about Shiro Koshinaka leaving AJPW, which was greatly outshone by Bruiser Brody joining NJPW in a shocking move that changed the business in Japan and around the world, with a highly detailed rundown about why it happened. We even go to Kuwait this week for a JCP-adjacent tour, as well as England, Mexico, & Puerto Rico, before coming back to mainland America to talk about the territories, featuring some wild brawls in Southeastern, Tux Newman & Randy Savage running wild in Memphis, and the greatness of Mid-South television in this era. We then close with the WWF, as WrestleMania is just days away, with highlights including Vince McMahon insulting Andre the Giant on TNT in what the Observer reported was believed to have gotten shoot-y and, of course, Hulk Hogan maiming Richard Belzer on his “Hot Properties” talk show on Lifetime as Mr. T eggs him on. We jump ahead a week during our look back at JCP/NWA in 1986, because, basically, this is the next one available to watch. It's a good one, too. Chocked full of intense interviews from Ric Flair, Nikita Koloff, Jim Cornette, Wahoo McDaniel, Rick Rude and Tully Blanchard and matches from Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin, Arn Anderson and Brad Armstrong. All so short, that you might miss them if ya blink. However, the start of the program shows the iconic (can we use that word here?) shot of the pumpkins being throw off a scaffold by the Road Warriors as they get ready for the Midnight Express and "Starrcade '86: Night of the Skywalkers." Always great content leading up to Starrcade, and this was no exception! It is an exciting time, but also a trying time for JCP and World Championship Wrestling. On this edition we will begin our countdown to Starrcade '86 with the announcement of the first match. And to help sell that first match we will see an incredibly entertaining video from Jimmy Valiant and Big Mama. Plus, footage of the night Dusty Rhodes tried to break the leg of Tully Blanchard from Greensboro and Paul Jones' Army is at it again: first attacking Wahoo McDaniel and then turning on Baron Von Raschke. Finally, we will see the final interview from Magnum T.A. before his tragic vehicle accident. It's all here, and it's all about the great year of 1986. It's the night before the NWA crowns new U.S. Tag Team Champions and Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express are in rare form. So much so that we hear Dennis Condrey speak once again! Plus the issue between Wahoo McDaniel and Nikita Koloff intensifies as they look to unify the U.S. and National Heavyweight titles. Also, we will hear from Dusty Rhodes and Magnum T.A., and Paul Jones makes an offer to the Ragin' Bull Manny Fernandez. Plus what is all of this about a "salsa thief?" The National Tag Team Championship is rebranded and becomes the US Tag Team Championship. So says Jim Crockett and most of the program is used to promote the one night tournament in the Omni to crown the first ever US Tag Team Champs. Also, Wahoo McDaniel is the new National Heavyweight Champion with a win over Tully Blanchard at the Forum in Los Angeles, the Kansas Jayhawks confront Jim Cornette and Big Bubba, Ric Flair and Mike Jackson have a great TV match and the end of the show sees the Four Horsemen confront Dick Murdoch only to have Dusty Rhodes and Magnum TA come to the ring to help him in a pretty good ending. Fall is almost here in 1986 and with it comes excitement and heartbreak, this is JCP in the 80's! A great show from the famed Dorton Arena in Raleigh that is completely different from the studio shows...and some great matches not normally seen on TBS. We will see Black Bart vs Ron Garvin, Tully Blanchard vs Wahoo McDaniel, the Midnight Express against the Road Warriors and a Bunkhouse Match featuring the Rock and Roll Express and Dusty Rhodes against Ric Flair, Arn and Ole Anderson. WOW! Some good stuff and a very good angle between Jim Cornette and Baby Doll. A few notes concerning this episode: The 07-05-86 show could not be found. We looked. So we are jumping ahead one week to 07-12-86. Additionally, the show has many blurred out parts in the beginning, so hang in there. The Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Tag Team Tournament is over, but the heat is turned up. We begin a feud between Ric Flair and Ricky Morton with a Horsemen attack in the Rock and Roll Express dressing room. Additionally, in what may be one of the most inappropriate episodes of 1986, Baby Doll is attacked by Jim Cornette and Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin and Precious make further fun of Wahoo McDaniel's heritage. The angles don't hold up well in the world we live in now, but no denying, JCP on TBS was on a roll. As we march through 1986, and move ahead to the Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournament, Arn Anderson and Ron Garvin meet again for the World Television title, but this time, the Horsemen have a plan. Plus we will hear from Magnum TA, Jim Cornette, Dusty Rhodes and Baby Doll. Plus. how many times has Wahoo McDaniel broken his nose? And Ron Garvin is proud to me an American! North American, maybe? The WWE Network is completely gone as of this posting, hopefully, if you cannot watch along, you will enjoy the interviews and the banter of Conrad and Tony as they watch along with the greatest year ever for JCP!!! You may have cheered for Pistol Pez Whatley, but that ends today. He turns on Jimmy Valiant and sets the stage for Shaska Whatley. Plus, Jim Cornette, Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson, the Russians and the Road Warriors all weigh in on the upcoming Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Tag Team Tournament. Additionally, over the past weeks, Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin has been asking for Wahoo McDaniel. Well, Wahoo gives Jimmy and Precious a stern warning. It is on this episode of WCW that we find out the location and the top seeds for the upcoming Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournament. Also, Baby Doll makes a stunning challenge to J.J. Dillon only to find it was a ruse to get the Horsemen in the ring. Plus, Ron Garvin beats up another one, Arn Anderson and Mike Jackson wrestle a fine match for the NWA Television Championship and the Midnight Express have fun playing around with two overmatched opponents. We will also hear from Jimmy Garvin, Dusty Rhodes, Tully Blanchard and Jim Cornette and see some special footage on the soon to be returning Wahoo McDaniel. There is nothing quite like JCP in 1986!
