In this week's Interview Classic episode from ten years ago (9-20-2019), PWTorch editor Wade Keller presents a special Interview Friday with three distinct segments with Triple H, Nick “Eugene” Dinsmore, and Beth Phoenix.-The first segment features Triple H's media conference call after NXT's debut on USA Network. He talked about the thought process that went into what to feature on the USA Network debut, Vince McMahon's involvement and reaction, whether the Full Sail venue is sufficient in the long-run for a national cable show setting, how the show was structured differently because of the split between USA and WWE Network, whether NXT is still developmental, utilizing cruiserweight on the show, and more.-Then comes an interview Wade Keller and Bruce Mitchell conducted on July 26, 2019 which has never been heard before with Nick “Eugene” Dinsmore which was recorded in front of a live audience at the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame Weekend events in Waterloo, Iowa. at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center. In this interview, he discusses a wide range of fascinating topics including being the initial trainer of some of the top stars of the last 20 years including great stories on early John Cena, Brock Lesnar, Batista, and The Rock. Did Cena come across as a future star right away? Was Lesnar a nice guy and hard worker early? What did he think when he would look at The Rock? What separates the top class of success stories from those who didn't end up making it from that same class in OVW? He also talks about ribs he played on Matt Striker, what lessons did he learn that he conveys to his students, the controversial aspects of the Eugene character and how it originated and was received, and more.-Then comes a panel discussion from July 27, 2019 which was recorded in front of a live audience at the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame Weekend events in Waterloo, Iowa. at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center which featured Gerald Brisco, Beth Phoenix, Bob Roop, Baron Von Racshke, and Thunderbolt Patterson. This snippet features Gerald Brisco talking at first about teaming with his brother and feuding with The Funks and Jay Youngblood & Rick Steamboat, then Beth Phoenix speaking about the transition from the Divas ear and her thought on women main eventing WrestleMania, who she thinks are top emerging stars today (outside of WWE), and her desire to see a culture in pro wrestling where kids can see a little bit of themselves in the product no matter their race, background, orientation, or otherwise. In the end, Baron Von Raschke sneaks in a joke about playing his imaginary sister Big Bertha on the air.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/wade-keller-pro-wrestling-podcast--3076978/support.

It's crazy to think about Ric Flair being "the young, up-and-coming, next big thing" in wrestling, but in 1983, he was! This show was possibly the only time Jim Crockett beat Vince McMahon as he got a big, annual, tent-pole event to closed circuit before the WWF did with WrestleMania. A lot of the matches on this show were throw-aways, but we've got some big match-ups as well. Roddy Piper and Greg Valentine battle it out in a Dog Collar match, which co-host Greg deems "the REAL most dangerous match in wrestling," the Briscos (Jack & Jerry) defend their Tag Titles against Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood, and of course, Harley Race defends the NWA World Heavyweight Title against Ric Flair in the steel cage main event match. Jonathan Hood talks about the late Don Kernodle, Mid-Atlantic wrestling star who committed suicide at the age of 71. Don Kernodle passes away After a wrestling career at Elon College, Kernodle broke into the sports-entertainment world with Jim Crockett Productions in 1973. The grappler burst onto the scene of the National Wrestling Alliance as part of Sgt. Slaughter’s “Cobra Corps,” teaming with Slaughter and Pvt. Jim Nelson. The partnership spawned multiple NWA World and Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championship reigns for Kernodle, battling the likes of Ricky Steamboat, Jay Youngblood, Iceman King Parsons and others. Kernodle competed with WWE throughout 1982 and 1983, as a team with Nelson and in one-on-one bouts against legendary competitors such as Tito Santana and Rocky Johnson. After the singles stint, Kernodle returned to the NWA for memorable tag team runs with Bob Orton Jr. and Ivan Koloff. Kernodle stepped away from the NWA in 1986 but continued to wrestle in a number of independent promotions. Outside the ring, Kernodle served as a deputy sheriff with the Alamance County sheriff’s office in North Carolina. Kernodle, who had a law enforcement career following his pro wrestling days, was scheduled to be inducted into the Lou Thesz/George Tragos Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame in July.

Daniel Veillon’s Views of 83 Weeks and counting.

Starrcade was a Thanksgiving Special at first, Dusty Rhodes thought of this Event because he said to himself “what are people going to do now that they’ve eaten there Thanksgiving meal?” and his answer was to offer them a Special Wrestling Event to finish off Thanksgiving with. To really set this Event up, they started off with NWA Champion Harley Race putting a Bounty out on Ric Flair for $25,000. They used Cowboy Bob Orton Jr. and Dick Slater to collect the Bounty to add suspense and what finished the set up for the Main Event was Ric Flair announcing his Retirement and than returning with a baseball bat and cutting a Promo that ended with “It’s only just begun”. Other matches were NWA Tag-Team Title match between Jay Youngblood and Ricky Steamboat challenging Gerry & Jack, The Briscoe Brothers. Instead of having a U. S. Title match between Roddy Piper and Greg Valentine, to make this Event unforgettable, they asked Piper to get a Dog Collar so that they could have a Dog Collar match. They had a TV Title vs. Mask match between Charlie Brown and the Champion The Great Kabuki. For the first fifteen minutes, the TV Title was on the line and the rest of the match the Mask was on the line, so that’s what I believe helped solidify this Event as the gold standard in what we now call Pay-per-Views in Wrestling. There were other matches that I don’t remember right now, but those matches really made me want to see the second one whenever I first watched it on the WWE Network, so please enjoy my Episode of Starrcade 1983. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daniel-veillon/message

It begins! We start off our look through WCW with the series commonly called WCW's version of Wrestlemania, Starrcade. A pre-WCW Jim Crockett Promotions created the wrestling supercard with Starrcade '83, and in so doing made wrestling history. Will Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood win the tag titles for the record fifth time? Will Ric Flair get his revenge on Harley Race for attempting to take him out of wrestling for good? Is Wahoo's last name McDaniel or McDaniels? And how many times will Dusty Rhodes have to cut the same promo? For answers to all these questions...let's go to the ring!
