On this REMIX edition of 83 Weeks, Eric and Conrad take us back to the infamous "Finger Poke Of DOOM!" episode of Monday Nitro. Find out what Eric thinks of this angle with the benefit of 20 years hindsight. We address the rumor that Goldberg shot down the first idea for his angle with Liz and how Eric thinks Goldberg and Liz did in their acting roles that night. Plus, Conrad presses Eric to defend the silliness of a "Hogan running for President" angle, clarification on Kevin Nash's role behind the scenes, why Eric put him in that position, when the plan was in place to hand Hogan the title, who got Goldberg a 1000% raise from WCW, an incredible story you've probably never heard before about a huge mainstream deal Turner turned down, and a tidbit about a word you couldn't say on WCW TV that you just will not believe! Of all the things on this episode to discuss, only one decision made that night really mattered and it led to 600,000 folks changing the channel. Conrad breaks down "butts in the seats" in detail and makes Eric own it. Oh and Eric buries two legends in the business to the point it leaves Conrad speechless. I describe the experience of attending a 1993 WCW TV taping at Walt Disney World, with a bit of WCW background thrown in.
The Thursday Night Wars are over as WCW raises the white flag and shifts Thunder over to Wednesdays permanently. This first installment of Wednesday Night Thunder is the go-home show to Souled Out and it sure was... a 2 hour block of television. Terry Funk has formed The Old Age Outlaws with Arn Anderson, Larry Zbyszko, and Paul Orndorff to help take out the NWO. Bret Hart reveals he had an epiphany and t-shirt politics are back on WCW TV. Medusa faces Oklahoma in an Evening Gown Match. Thunder sees it's first "on a pole" match when a champagne bottle is up-for-grabs in a match between Chris "Champagne" Kanyon and Bam Bam Bigalow. Mean Gene Okerland is even more of a creep. And we see a title change on the cusp of Souled Out. Someone get Orndorff some soup! Kris & David are joined by Alfredo Esparza (@therealfredo) to discuss the (almost-)week that was April 28-May 2, 1993. We start off talking about the very first Triplemania event put on by AAA and how it changed the game in lucha libre, drawing the biggest crowd in Mexican wrestling history at Plaza de Toros in Mexico City. We go through each match, particularly Konnan vs. Cien Caras in a loser must retire match with Jake Roberts playing a part in the finish. We also talk about everything else going on in the lucha world that week in one of our longest Lucha sections ever. We then go to WCW where we talk about the debut of the Blackhearts and Ric Flair's Flair for the Gold, which was a doozy, among other WCW craziness. We also talk about Robert Fuller appearing on SMW & WCW TV on the same day as Col. Robert Parker makes his debut, and one of the greatest Memphis TV matches in the history of the territory. To bring it home, we try to explain the insanity of the GWF in this era to Fredo before going to the WWF, where Hulk Hogan is doing Hulk Hogan things on TV. All that plus a free preview of our new Patreon-exclusive deep dive, so listen now!Timestamps:0:00:00 Mexico: AAA, CMLL, PREDESA, UWA, & Tijuana1:32:55 WCW2:15:46 Japan: FMW, Michinoku Pro, PWC, & RINGS2:22:55 Classic Commercial Break2:26:07 Halftime2:40:58 Other USA: IWF, All-Star (MA), CAWF, UWS, WWA, ECW, ICWA, SMW, USWA, GWF, Wes Crowder, & Big D4:21;57 WWF4:40:08 Patreon Preview: Phil Mushnick's infamous front-page “Sex, Lies, and the WWF” column about Vince McMahon's performances on TV relative to what he told PhilTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. In this free preview clip of our latest deep dive Patreon special, which is the second in a series on ECW on TNN, we look an the portion of Bruce Mitchell’s Torch column on “the new work”—being honest about small things so the big lies will be more credible—that dealt with ECW. More specifically, he gets into the reaction to the ECW on TNN ratings, and Kris sees so many parallels to 2020 that he decreed on air that the ensuing discussion would be the preview clip. So here it is! To hear the whole show, you need to become a Between The Sheets patron at the $5/month level or higher by going to Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets. ----- Full show description: It’s time for the second of who knows how many episodes in our series covering ECW on TNN, this time looking at the first show through the end of November 1999! Topics discussed include how Paul Heyman got the relationship off on the wrong foot from the start by avoiding doing tapings using TNN’s preferred production team, Raven’s surprise return fresh off WCW TV coinciding with Taz’s strange exodus, how our new research suggests that Paul trying to deal in good faith with Taz backfired on him, Sandman’s return after weeks of denials that he was on his way, Jason Powell confronting Heyman about trying to work him on the Sandman story, a pattern of both newsletters missing way too much important stuff in non-wrestling media, TNN’s hatred of Rob Zombie and Godsmack, the infamous exploitative Tammy Sytch sit-down interview that drew big ratings, Tammy passing out in the locker room, Steve Corino invading a Limp Bizkit concert, Acclaim officially announcing the ECW video game deal after both sides repeatedly let it slip, what happened to Howard Lipkint when he didn’t get TNN for his new promotion, Bruce Mitchell writes about “the new work” in the Torch, and a LOT more. Like last time, this is a can’t-miss show where we suspect you’ll learn a lot. Hell, we sure did! If nothing else, you’ll probably come out of this show thinking TNN didn’t screw ECW as much as everyone thinks they did. Timestamps: 0:00:00 ECW on TNN #1 as covered the week of August 30, 1999 0:36:57 September 1999 1:39:00 October 1999 2:56:52 November 1999 ----- To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets ( http://patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets ) and become an ongoing Patron. Hulk Hogan has said the "Finger Poke of Doom" was the "beginning of the end of WCW," and no one really disagreed with him... or did they? Find out what Eric Bischoff thinks of this angle with the benefit of nearly 20 years hindsight. We address the rumor that Goldberg shot down the first idea for his angle with Liz and how Eric thinks Goldberg and Liz did in their acting roles that night. Plus Conrad presses Eric to defend the silliness of a "Hogan running for President" angle, clarification on Kevin Nash's role behind the scenes, why Eric put him in that position, when the plan was in place to hand Hogan the title, who got Goldberg a 1000% raise from WCW, an incredible story you've probably never heard before about a huge mainstream deal Turner turned down, and a tidbit about a word you couldn't say on WCW TV that you just will not believe! Of all the things on this episode to discuss, only one decision made that night really mattered and it led to 600,000 folks changing the channel. Conrad breaks down "butts in the seats" in detail and makes Eric has to own it. Oh and Eric buries two legends in the business to the point it leaves Conrad speechless. Eric is fired up and ready to breakdown the FINGER POKE OF DOOM! Did you know you could be enjoying 83 Weeks days, even a week in advance on ADFreeShows.com? Episode 47 sees the return of former WCW TV and Cruiserweight Champion, as well as a former WCW and TNA Creative Team member, Disco Inferno. Firstly, he and I cover Fast Lane, and the crowd's, AGAIN, negative response towards Roman Reigns, and Disco's thoughts on that. He also gives his thoughts on the current fanbase in general, and the difference between what once constituted entertaining wrestling television, as opposed to how fans think wrestling should be portrayed today. We talk about how he first met Raven, and the birth of the Disco Inferno character. We talk about how he wound up in WCW, and how the fans immediately took to the character. We cover his memorable WCW Saturday Night gimmick, where every week he would try a new variation on his secret "leg hold," and how things that that can be more memorable than actual matches. Disco also discusses teaming with Alex Wright, being on "Public Enemy Duty," and the night the British Bulldog was injured on The Ultimate Warrior's "secret" trap door. Disco then tells us about why Warrior may have been doomed to fail in WCW, and how the same factors may have affected Bret Hart's WCW run. Finally, we cover today's physical style of wrestling, which move he believes is responsible for all of the neck injuries from the late 90s until today, and how he views the current wrestling style as it relates to concussions. Throughout the show, we also discuss Perry Saturn, Paul Heyman, Vince Russo, Goldberg, Ryback, AJ Styles, his current roles in 3PW Las Vegas, Future Stars of Wrestling, and an upcoming appearance in June for PWS. Please check out ProWrestlingLoot.com and use discount code "CREATIVE" to receive 10% off a monthly pro wrestling box of goodies! And please check out Vince Russo's "The Brand" and the Relm Network at VinceRussoBrand.com
It was a sad day on November 29, 1999, when a game of simple feigned pick-up basketball between Scott Hall and Kevin Nash resulted in the loss of one of WCW's most coveted and revered championships: the TV Title. More like Nash decided to slam dunk the belt into the trash... William Renken and Charlie Stabile take a brief look at some of their thoughts and memories on the World Television Championship through it's demise in a garbage can in Denver, Colorado.
