Send us a textThis might be the most fun episode we ever produced. As we look back at George H. W. Bush , Pro wrestling fan. With the help of Charleston Post and Courier articles written by their star reporter Mike Mooneyham, we will examine the Bush connection to the world of Professional wrestling and especially his fondness for wrestling's greatest athlete, "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair. We will hear about Bush's friendship with promoter Paul Boesch, his lifelong connection to "Chief" Ed "Wahoo" McDaniel, and his later friendship with "The Big Cat" Ernie Ladd. We will also hit the trail , in 1992, on the whistlestop tour that took George Bush through the Carolinas, with the biggest sports star of them all, Ric Flair. It was at a rally in Spartanburg S.C. where our Host, Randal Wallace, was able to maneuver himself up near the front with a little help from Martha Bishop, the sister of our Senator Strom Thurmond, so he would be nearly front row for the rally at the Train Depot, that would feature not only the President, but Governor Carrol Campbell, Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler, Senator Strom Thurmond, Congressional Candidate Bob Inglis, and our host's childhood sports hero, Ric Flair. To this day, as you will hear, it remains Wallace's favorite memory of any in his over 45 years in politics. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any footage from the Spartanburg rally, but we do have some examples of George Bush out on his 1992 whistle-stop tour, and we do have some later moments from the 2008 Presidential campaign where Ric Flair would return to the trail to campaign for Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. It was at the event for Huckabee in Myrtle Beach that our host again became the focus of attention as he stood with a folder full of wrestling magazines hoping to get them autographed by Ric Flair, at the Huckabee rally, while serving as the Rudy Giuliani Horry County Chairman. It made the news, in two articles in the Sun News political blog Poli-tick-Tock. We will look back at that blog too, and feature the Columbia Mike Huckabee Rally with Chuck Norris and Ric Flair. As you will hear, Hulk Hogan and Donald Trump were actually not the first Pro wrestler and President to headline a Presidential campaign event!! We're off to Houston for a unique WWF event, the Paul Boesch Retirement Show. We dig into the unique history of the territory. The evening includes a big Hogan title defense against the One Man Gang. Tito Santana teams up with Mil Mascaras to take on Demolition and Ted DiBiase and Jim Duggan tussle in a Mid South/UWF reunion. We take you on a wonderful trip down memory lane with our newest exclusive shoot interview with one of wrestling's all time greatest managers, Playboy Gary Hart. An underrated booker, Hart earned his chops in wrestling working for Fritz Von Erich's World Class promotion and helped make that Texas territory one of the most exciting in wrestling history. Seeing everything first hand, Hart talked about all the big angles – including the night Terry Gordy slammed the cage door on Kerry Von Erich along with the hair match between the Von Erichs and Gino Hernandez and Chris Adams – and all the heartbreaking stories of the era. This is the perfect supplement for anyone who enjoyed the Heroes of World Class DVD. Gary gives one of the most in-depth accounts of World Class on record and went into great detail on the lives, and passings, of each Von Erich. Emotionally powerful, this is a must-watch for any diehard fan of the Von Erichs, World Class, or the wrestling business in general. The information Hart gives just on the television production alone is invaluable as World Class was leaps and bounds ahead of the curve when it came to presentation. This is one shoot you will not want to miss! Hart certainly didn't leave out anything from his legendary WCW run including working with Sting, Great Muta, Terry Funk, and Lex Luger, among others. This is the one shoot where J-Tex finally gets its due! Old school wrestling fans are going to want to drop whatever they are doing and watch this shoot interview immediately as Gary Hart has seen it all and is one of the few who are still here to talk about it. Bill Watts. Jim Barnett. Paul Boesch. Bruiser Brody. Hart even worked for Court Bauer's MLW! Like we said, we covered EVERYTHING.

Splendid Isolation Number Two takes us around the world as we welcome back Odessa Steps contributer and Segunda Caida writer Matt D. The fine folks at Segunda Caida (@segundacaida) embarked a little while ago on this project of reviewing classic French Catch wrestling. Matt is going to explain how the project started, describe what the product was like in France in the 1950s and 1960s, who some of the better wrestlers have been and more. (And all of this done without mentioning Roland Barthes.) Matt picked some of his favorite bouts so far for folks to check out if they have never seen this footage before. Matt is also one of the more knowledgeable folks on the Paul Boesch era of Houston Wrestling, so we talk about the footage that the NWA posted on their youtube channel recently. We talk about what was new in that upload, but what to look for online of the Houston stuff that was put online as part of the NWA On Demand service a few years ago. There's also some brief lucha chat, because we never pass up a chance to talk about Negro Casas. Look for more episodes coming soon. Thanks for listening.

In the territory days of wrestling there were certain areas of the country that stood out for the quality of performers and stories that had almost mythical standings among fans, even if they could not see them in the pre cable TV era. Because PWI was based out of Pennsylvania, the then WWWF automatically took a large part of the coverage. But fans were also aware of the AWA in the Midwest, Sam Munchnick in St. Louis with Harley Race, Paul Boesch in Houston with the Funk Brothers, and Memphis, home of Jerry "The King" Lawler. When you talk about Memphis, you obviously talk about Lawler. You also, however, discuss names such as Bill Dundee, Austin Idol, Lanny Poffo and his brother "Macho Man" Randy Savage, and many others. One of the most consistent names in that situation is Randy Hales. Randy has been a fixture for decades in the Memphis region. He has served as commentator, manager, promoter and booker throughout his years in the business. He has a load of stories about the Memphis scene and how many of the legendary guys you see now get their start in the Memphis territroy. We are honored to have a man of Randy's stature joining us tonight and we hope you will enjoy the variety of stories he has to share. http://randyhalesmemphiswrestling.com

In this special episode of Greetings From Allentown, the first 1987 WWF appearances by Ted DiBiase are examined. Included: - A brief history of DiBiase and his career across various territories from the mid-70s up to his return to the WWF in May 1987 - The impact of Houston Wrestling and Paul Boesch spurning the NWA and Jim Crockett Promotions in favor of working with the WWF and a big reason why that was done - A look at the Houston-only storyline that turned babyface Ted DiBiase into a heel literally on the eve of the first Million Dollar Man vignettes and why the WWF would feel they needed to do it - My personal favorite Million Dollar Man vignette and Ted’s crossover to super-villainy Twitter: @GFAllentownPod Facebook: G.F. The podcast remembers Chavo Guerrero Senior (Salvador Guerrero) who passed away at the age of 68. Chavo was the son of Gori Guerrero, brother of Hector, Mando and Eddy Guerrero and father of Chavo Guerrero Jr. Our condolences to his friends and family. Magazine contributor Matt discusses Chavo's long career wrestling in Houston for Paul Boesch, including his singles feuds and matches teaming with Hector. We mention their feud with the Fabulous Ones, amongst others. Lots of footage of Chavo in Houston can be seen on the NWA on demand streaming service. We also talk about some of matches available on the service, including a just-posted NWA title match from 1977 between Terry Funk and Harley Race. We also have a brief chat about new comics we are enjoying, including US Avengers and Ultimates 2 by Al Ewing. Then, we have an exerpt from Winter Palace episode 7 with Vandal Drummond. At the time, we discussed the passing of Roddy Piper and Vandal seeing him live in LA in the late 1970s and part of our discussion was about Piper's feud with a young Chavo. We did not have a change to get someone on to talk about Chavo's career in Japan or his time as NWA Junior Heavyweight champion. We hope to try and get a guest to discuss that on an upcoming episode of the podcast.
The Titans celebrate their 50th episode and there is much cause for excitement as Pete interviews NWA President Bruce Tharpe about the forthcoming NWA Classics streaming service that will feature hours of never-seen-before content from old Houston cards promoted by Paul Boesch in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
