SEASON 6, EPISODE 18On this weekend's Behind the Mitten Show with Amy Sherman and John Gonzalez -- It's kind of like our second home, but we are always excited to see what is new and happening in gorgeous Gaylord. Our number one guest co-host Paul Beachnau from the Gaylord Visitor's Bureau joins us this week, along with his co-worker, and paddle board enthusiast Christy Walcott. We love catching up with them about what is going on in Gaylord, and of course, they don't disappoint. Our first stop was at a brand-new coffee shop located downtown Gaylord, Brennan's. Ryan and Patty Kennedy opened this charming new spot recently, and you'll often find them working alongside their two young sons. Grab a latte, or freshly baked sweet, or maybe a pound of roasted coffee during your visit, and then head on out to tour and shop downtown. We head just a quick two minutes out of town to hook up with the North Central Trail and learn more about this extensive system. Local Gaylord resident Megan Rinck joins us to share what she loves about being all outdoors in Gaylord. She is a pretty serious athlete, enjoying everything from biking and hiking to extreme triathlons. We talk e-bikes, where to hike in Gaylord, and how she has totally taken over the winter Alpenfest in Gaylord. On our way back to town, we stopped at Jay's Sporting Goods, which has locations in both Claire and Gaylord. We had a pretty awesome time visiting with the general manager of Jay's, Mark Copeland. It was a wild time while we were there, Mark had us try out e-scooters (crazy ass good fun!), shoot a bow and arrows (this is much harder than it looks, but they'll coach you through it) and try out a crossbow (amazingly accurate). We'll tell you how you too can also fully experience Jay's, which is truly one of Michigan's premier sporting goods supply stores. We've been friends with Jordan Auwure for a few years now, and are always excited to hear what he is up to. He's one of those local heroes, who is so passionate about his local community that he is always cooking up something new for everyone to enjoy. This summer he'll be kicking off the summer music concert series in downtown Gaylord on May 10. Jordan shares some of the work he's been doing to get ready, as well as what to expect during this summer series.Where are we going to be next week? We don't know. But tune in to find out.Follow John and Amy:Website: amyandgonzo.comFacebook at https://www.facebook.com/behindthemittenTwitterX at @BehindTheMittenInstagram at @BehindTheMitten

This week we bring you missives from glorious Gaylord, Michigan! Our great friend Mr. Paul Beachnau (or as we like to call him, Paulie B) is back to share everything he loves about his hometown, including cool things to do downtown during the holidays. Paulie is the director of the Gaylord Tourism Bureau, so trust us when we say he knows what he's talking about. He's also a major fan of winter. Yes, winter! Gaylord lies in the "snowbelt" of Michigan, which makes it an ideal destination for winter adventures across the northern lower peninsula. Paulie shares some tips on making the most out of your time in Gaylord.Christy Walcott from the Gaylord Tourism Bureau loves to eat, just like we do. She joins us and shares new spots to nosh at as Gaylord's culinary scene grows. You'll still find old favorites like Bennethum's Northern Inn and The Alpine Tavern welcoming guests with classic menus and warm atmospheres. But now you'll also find breweries, authentic Mexican and German spots, sushi and bourbon bars scattered across downtown. Christy's passion for Gaylord always shines through. We have updates on the fast-approaching winter ski season because ski hills are already making snow and will be open before you know it. Gaylord is home to two ski resorts, the historic Otsego Resort and Treetops, known as Michigan's Most Spectacular Resort. This family-friendly spot is the ideal place for both new and experienced skiers, with over 1500 acres to explore. This year, the resort is offering a new way to learn how to glide down the hills with ease. Barry Owens, general manager at Treetops shares how "terrain-based learning" works, and why you might want to give it a try.And yes, we WILL talk about winter rafting.....which is one of the COOLEST pure Michigan things you can do outside in the cold.....and something that will definitely have you EMBRACING WINTER. If you know, you know how very cool this activity is, and why you really should give it a try in Gaylord. We'll also talk about other ways to get on out there and really learn to love the cold, from snowshoeing to extreme tubing. To get more information and to help plan your next visit to the Gaylord region, check out:https://www.gaylordmichigan.net/Follow John and Amy:Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/behindthemittenTwitter at @BehindTheMittenInstagram at @BehindTheMitten

Winter Vinecki’s father was diagnosed with prostate cancer when she was 9 years old. He passed away 10 months later, just before his 41st birthday. Competing since Age 5, Winter aspires to be a summer and winter Olympian In memory of her dad. Winter and her mother Dawn Estelle join us for this powerful mother-daughter Podcast interview. An interview about a family of champions born from two loving parents who valued free play, hard work and grit! Winter Lee Vinecki “Winter” Winter was born on December 18, 1998 in Grand Rapids Michigan.  She grew up in Gaylord Michigan and Salem, Oregon and now trains in Park City, Utah. After losing her Dad at the age of 9 to an aggressive form of prostate cancer, she formed www.teamwinter.org a 501 (c) (3) non-profit to raise money for prostate cancer research & awareness.  She’s raised over $400,000 toward that effort and counting. Winter began racing Triathlons at the age of 5 and completed her first Olympic triathlons at 9!  She went on to become the national Ironkids champ for 2010 & 2011 and finished her third year as the official ambassador of the sport. She was the 2011 recipient of the Annika Inspiration Award.  At that event she met Aerial’s Olympian Emily Cook who convinced her to try out for the Fly Elite Freestyle Aerials team in Park City.   After a weeklong camp, Fly Elite decided to sponsor Winter as a 2018 Olympic hopeful in Aerials Freestyle. This was a significant change in Winter and her family’s lives because joining this team requires Winter to live in Park City Utah with a host family for the foreseeable future. Winter’s Mom, Dawn and 3 brothers live in Oregon and they are able to visit as often as possible at races across the country and brief periods of downtime between training sessions. Winter, now 14 years old is planning to race in dozens of events throughout 2013, she’ll be focused on freestyle aerials throughout the Winter as well as completing her world record marathon attempt by the end of the year. She recently set a new world record as the youngest person to ever complete a marathon on Antarctica. She’ll also be racing in multiple running triathlons including the Xterra series. For Winter, it’s not about the attention. It’s about bringing vindication to her dad, who was given a death sentence in the form of prostate cancer; a disease in which one in six men will be afflicted with. She strives every day, sacrificing playtime and other luxuries kids her age take for granted to ensure that she is doing all she can to bring an end to this tragic and all-too-common disease.
