In this episode of The Daily Windup, we talk about the challenges and solutions faced by the Hawaiian community during the pandemic. We talk about collaborations with the Governor of Hawaii to tackle the high unemployment rate caused by the travel industry's collapse. Through brainstorming sessions and identifying various problems, they developed a groundbreaking initiative—creating a university to train individuals in STEM fields and provide opportunities for technological advancements. One of the major hurdles they encountered was the lack of high-speed internet access on certain islands, such as Molokai. So a unique solution called "university in a box" was born. This innovative approach involved a specialized version of XF 5,000, an application capable of running offline on laptops. Students could access all the university's resources and training material without an internet connection and periodically synchronize their progress during visits to designated locations with high-speed internet. Join us in this insightful episode as we explore the transformative power of education and technology in rebuilding communities and fostering economic growth.

DOING LIFE: Daily Devotions For Finding Peace in Stressful Times
You Don't Need a Wifi to Communicate with God
To be honest with you, I couldn't tell you what really happened the night the lights went out in Georgia. I wasn't there.I can tell you, though, what happened the night the lights went out in Omaha, just as I was getting ready to pick music for what would have been the Aug. 2 edition of the Big Show. It wasn't good. There's a big pile of limbs and branches sitting in front of the 3 Chords & the Truth culture war bunker, waiting for the city to haul it away. That's one of the smaller piles on the street.THE STORM that turned out the lights in Omaha also dropped trees and huge limbs on houses all over town -- and on more than a few power lines. One of those houses was next door.Oh . . . and we had no power for a week. No Internet, either. Obviously. So, no electricity, no show for two weeks. After sweating profusely for a few days, then bugging out to our friends' downtown condo after the temperature inside got within spitting distance of the 99-degree heat outside -- this with all the windows open -- the lights finally came back on late on Aug. 7.And now we're back in business, in brightly lit, Internet enabled, air-conditioned comfort. I gotta tell you, I was getting a little stir crazy only as an old radio/media guy can.And this week, we're trying to make up for the unplanned absence. Boy, are we. Trust me, this edition of the show is a good one. As usual. Thus, without any further ado. . . .It's 3 Chords & the Truth, y'all. Be there. Aloha.
Song: Akiva Nichamtanu Sung by Baruch Levine Inspiration by Baruch Levine As we stand here right after Tisha B'av, we can't help but wonder if this will actually be the last Tisha B'av. Every year we yearn and try to better ourselves with the hope that Hashem will bring us out of this galus, but then Tisha B'av comes again and we're left asking ourselves "What now?!" But just as quickly as the fast ends, a new hope arises with the famous words "Nachamu Nachamu Ami". What is this nechama, this consolation? Baruch Levine takes us into the well known gemara with Rabbi Akiva and the famous words "Akiva Nichamtanu! Akiva Nichamtanu!" through his beautiful song. May this year actually be the last Tisha B'av we ever have to mourn, and may the redemption turn this day of sorrow into a day of great celebration. No Internet? No smartphone? No problem! When we are able to put our differences aside and look deeper into another Yid, we will find someone who is so precious and so pure. Rarely a song comes out and shines this light on every Yid the way the song "Yidden" does. Produced by Thank You Hashem, it is a song that has helped Yidden around the world see the greatness of their fellow Jews, as well as the greatness within themselves. No Internet? No smartphone? Written by the Shlah Hakadosh, Rav Yeshaya Halevi Ish Horowitz, over 400 years ago, this tefilla speaks of the yearning and hope of every Jewish parent, to have righteous and successful children. I reached out to composer Yitzy Waldner to talk about his personal inspiration behind the beautiful song "Tefillas HaShlah" he wrote for his daughter's wedding, and subsequently sang with Yaakov Shwekey on his "Musica" album. Song: Chanukah is Here Composed by: Elimelech Blumstein Sung by: Zusha We're living in dark times. With what's going on in Eretz Yisroel and the spread of anti semitism around the world, the Yom Tov of Chanukah brings a much needed light to the Jewish world. Baruch Hashem, over the last few months we have witnessed communities and individuals from across Klal Yisroel who have spread their light to others. Chanukah is a time to bring that light to new levels. May you all have a lichtege Chanukah, and may all of Klal Yisroel see the ultimate light very soon in our days. Thank You Hashem! No Internet? Recording this episode just one week after the tragic events in Eretz Yisroel on Simchas Torah, I tried to find the right song that could express the feelings of all Klal Yisroel at this moment. Yaakov Shwekey's "Cry No More" fit the feeling, expressing our sole desire to reunite with Hakadosh Baruch Hu in a world with no more pain and no more tears. It is my fervent wish that all the Torah learned, tefillos davened, chessed done, and achdus that has been expressed this past week, be the tipping point for Hakadosh Baruch Hu to finally tell us...CRY NO MORE! This episode is in honor of all Klal Yisroel, of which I'm proud to be a part of. B'zechus a refuah sheleimah to all those injured and b'zechus that all our brothers and sisters in captivity return home. No Internet? No smartphone? No problem!
