In celebration of Dune's 40th anniversary, we have a damn fine cup of coffee with actor (and now podcaster) Kyle MacLachlan. We discuss his new true crime podcast Varnamtown (7:08), MacLachlan's small-town upbringing (15:36), and what inspired him to pursue acting after college (18:15) before landing his debut role in Dune (21:16). Then, he describes the film's momentous premiere (27:42), his second collaboration with David Lynch in Blue Velvet (32:40) and the personal challenges he faced while making the film (34:08). On the back-half, we talk through Twin Peaks (41:25), Showgirls (46:57), how he taps into raw emotion as an actor (50:22), his recent foray into social media (58:25), and to close, a poignant George Price cartoon (1:01:00). In the 1960s George Price moved to London from Jamaica. George took his knowledge of Jamaican music and started importing records into the UK, becoming the only place to sell vinyl from famed record label Studio One. George sold these records to sound-systems and DJs and in doing so helped establish and grow Reggae music across the UK. He opened his shop Peckings Records in Shepherd's Bush in 1974 and its run today by his sons, Duke and Chris Price. Reggae artist and Radio Wales presenter Aleighcia Scott speaks to George's son Chris about his father and how on Sundays legends like Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Prince Buster would pop round to the house. George started selling records out of a suitcase but people used to come to the house so often that his wife Gertrude insisted that he open a shop. They speak about the roots of Reggae music and why Aleighcia still sticks to those sounds when she performs with her live band. They discuss the enormous popularity of Reggae in countries like Japan, France and Brazil and why you can hear tracks by Rick Astley and Celine Dion dropped into dance hall sets in Jamaica. Presenter: Aleighcia Scott Produced for BBC Audio Bristol by Toby Field.

Bob is back, three from him. Lovely 30s music and vocals 'On a steamer coming over,' 1933, from Billy Cotton. Eleven times married Charlie Barnet with another mode of transport 'Sky liner.' Think we need a new copy of that record!  Also up The Dixie Marimba Players, The Casa Loma Orchestra, The Deep River Boys,  Eddie Condon and Joe 'Fingers' Carr, who was in fact Lou Busch. The intriguing singer Billy Banks. Primarily known as a female impersonator on record- sounding male here with the jazz standard 'Margie.' Our oldest record is by GH Ghirgwin, 'Asleep in the Deep,' from 1912. Chirgwin act was 'black face.' An oddly popular style of entertainment until the 1970s. Remember the BBC series The Black and White Minstrel show?  I don't usually play the genre but Chirgwin's vocal performance is a straight one and his story is interesting. As is George Price. Performing at the age of six he impressed the mighty Caruso.  His stardom was brought to an abrupt halt when he fell out with Jacob Schubert, the theatre magnet. He did return to entertainment though and he shows a strong, unusual voice.  Patti Page sings about Johnny Guitar, 'My restless lover.  Its another naughty ending with Ozzie Nelson and 'The man who come around'.

Imagine a burning home, flames dancing out every window. A man walking by hears a scream for help from a young child coming from inside. Without much of a thought, he runs inside in an attempt to rescue the youngster. Why would he do that? Why – evolutionarily speaking – would anyone risk his or her life or save a stranger. One man thought he figured out why and he didn’t like what he discovered, so he gave up everything to prove himself wrong. Today I have the story of George Price on the 184th episode of Coffee of Jeff. Being a completely selfless person sounds like a wonderful thing, until you end up homeless sleeping on the street because you gave away all your possessions. Delusions of Jesus and the pursuit of scientific greatness drove George Price to a tragic fate. But along the way he developed one of the most profound (and poorly understood) equations in evolutionary biology. Join us as we talk about the implications of altruism, how suave vampire bats are and why only true friends will puke blood in your mouth. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bunsenburnerpod/support

Magazine Editor at Large Sarah van Gelder recently hosted University of Montana Professor George Price on Bainbridge, and they sat down with BCB host Reed Price for a discussion about climate and culture. Sarah not long ago took a road trip to investigate how the efforts at creating positive futures that her magazine reports on are playing out in the field. Sarah focused not on big urban areas or the coasts, but on what she called ‘the edges,' less populated, more gritty and often-overlooked regions of the country. She called it the “Edge of Change Road Trip,” and you can investigate her blog on the journey here: https://edgeofchange.yesmagazine.org/ One of the people she met was George Price, who lives in Northwest Montana. In this podcast, they talk about the kind of change George and the people he lives with have been a part of, and how that relates to some of the other things that Sarah experienced during her four-month long journey. (Here's a link to her post about George: https://edgeofchange.yesmagazine.org/2015/08/28/) This discussion took reactions to climate change as a focus, with an interest in actions people are taking in response to climate change. The answer to that question is not straightforward; as Sarah notes, climate change is a big slow process that people have a hard time responding to directly. However, there's plenty of evidence that things are changing in communities around corporate decision-making and economics that do affect the way people would like to see non-renewable resources like fossil fuels used. This wide-ranging conversation looks at new ways people are organizing, and how the ‘edges' might affect those more publicized parts of our culture.
