Jefferson City's mayor is praising Monday's inauguration of President Donald Trump (R), describing it as an exciting day for the United States and for the world. Mayor Ron Fitzwater, a Republican, joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Missouri", telling listeners that President Trump did a great job Monday of outlining his vision for the country. Mayor Fitzwater is also pleased that U.S. Reps. Sam Graves (R-Tarkio) and Jason Smith (R-Salem) will chair the House Transportation Committee and the Ways and Means Committee this year, respectively. We also discussed Jefferson City's aging tri-level during the interview. Mayor Fitzwater tells listeners that the tri-level remains a priority, adding that Chairman Graves is well aware of the problems with it. The mayor is hopeful that Jefferson City can get some federal funding for it. The state Department of Transportation (MoDOT) says it would cost about $93-million to rebuild the tri-level and the Rex Whitton Expressway. MoDOT tells 939 the Eagle that about 86,000 vehicles a day come through the tri-level area, with three major highways converging in the same area. MoDOT says the tri-level bridges were built in 1964 and that the “flyover” bridges were built in 1991:

Mayor David Holt, far younger than me, has an impressive resume for any big-city Mayor. He's been elected overwhelmingly twice, and his city is clearly on the rise. If you're not familiar with what's going on in Oklahoma, this is a chance at some insight.Moving out of a dark period in the city's history in the early 1990s, Oklahoma City took it upon itself to pursue a dramatic makeover. Every city is a work in progress, but what's been accomplished in the thirty years is remarkable. Mayor Holt and I discuss the MAPS program, initiated by his predecessors, and now working through its fourth installment. Most cities and city leaders talk about the importance of “quality of life” issues and improvements, but Mayor Holt and OKC have actually done something about it. Their MAPS program, which has a unique pay-as-you-go feature, is a terrific example of local government initiative. Does OKC show a model of successful big city governance? More than a decade ago, Kate Gallego had a seizure that temporarily cost her the ability to drive – and opened her eyes to the difficulty of getting around her city of Phoenix, Arizona without a car. Now, in her third term as Phoenix's mayor, she's pushed for some of the most aggressive multimodal transportaiton investments in the city's history, including a new shade plan to tackle the impact of the community's notoriously sweltering heat on people who walk, roll, orwait for a ride. On this episode of The Brake, we dive deep into how Phoenix is using next-level data to put shade investments into the neighborhoods that need them most, how shade structures can do double-duty as public art and play space, and the cultural challenges of fighting for multimodality in a place built around the car. Jefferson City Mayor Ron Fitzwater says the state fire marshal's office has been called in to investigate this weekend's house explosion on St. Louis road, east of the Missouri Capitol. Mayor Fitzwater joined us live this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri." Jefferson City spokeswoman Molly Bryan tells 939 the Eagle that there is an ongoing joint investigation between the Jefferson City fire and police departments and the Missouri state fire marshal's office. A cause has NOT been determined yet. Jefferson City authorities say there six people inside the home in the 2400 block of St. Louis road when it exploded Saturday morning at about 2:45. Two of the victims were driven across the river to the Jefferson City Memorial Airport and flown to Columbia's University Hospital and the other four were transported by ambulance to University Hospital. Our news partner KMIZ reports three of the victims are in critical condition and that three suffered moderate injuries. Mayor Fitzwater praises the team effort of first responders, saying it starts with Chiefs Schofield and Wilde. He notes the fire department's special operations rescue team (SORT) had to tunnel through layers of debris to reach the final occupant. Mayor Fitzwater tells listeners that Jefferson City firefighters are waiting on a report from the state fire marshal's office. The mayor says the city will release that report, once they get it. Mayor Fitzwater also notes the devastation that happened after the explosion, which you can see in the attached photo. During the live interview, Mayor Fitzwater also discussed a proposed housing development near Jefferson City's Rainbow drive, which is on the west side of town:
