The boys drink and review Atlas Brewery's Festbier then ask whether locking up criminals results in less crime. Why doesn't mass incarceration always lead to lower crime rates? Research shows that most crimes are committed by a small group of career offenders -- 5–10% of criminals may be responsible for half of all crimes. Locking up these repeat offenders *does* reduce crime. But once those individuals are off the streets, the returns diminish. This episode of beer and conversation explores:* How chronic offenders drive violent and property crime* Why locking up violent repeat offenders lowers crime* Why incarcerating non-violent offenders often has little impact (and can even make things worse)* Other factors, like broken families and gang dynamics, that continue to fuel crimeThe key takeaway: targeted incarceration works — blanket incarceration does not.#CrimeRates #Incarceration #RepeatOffenders #CriminalJustice #MassIncarceration #PublicSafety #CrimePolicy #JusticeReform #LawAndOrder

Tune in here to this Tuesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show with Jason Lewis filling in! Jason kicks off the program by welcoming Donald Bryson, CEO of the John Locke Foundation, to discuss the foundation’s bold new venture into filmmaking through John Locke Studios. The conversation centers around In the Pines, a powerful short film dramatizing the 1898 Wilmington coup—the only successful coup in American history. Jason praises the film’s storytelling and historical relevance, noting how it challenges the typical Hollywood narrative by offering a conservative perspective wrapped in compelling drama. Bryson explains the motivation behind the project, emphasizing the shift from print to visual media as a way to better engage modern audiences. He also touches on the backlash from left-leaning critics, which both he and Jason see as confirmation that the film struck a nerve. With additional projects like Letter to the Key already released, the discussion highlights how John Locke Studios is redefining how conservatives tell stories and preserve overlooked parts of history. We’re also joined by Dr. John Lott, esteemed economist and author of More Guns, Less Crime, for a deep dive into both Second Amendment policy and an unexpected turn into foreign affairs.Dr. Lott weighs in with his analytical perspective, agreeing that the outcomes were surprisingly effective given the high stakes. The two discuss the backlash Trump faces from within his own party—particularly the "war caucus"—and whether his instincts could lead to a deal with Iran without compromising U.S. or Israeli security. Their conversation blends economic reasoning with geopolitical nuance, offering listeners a fresh take on complex global dynamics through the lens of data, deterrence, and diplomacy. Alex Aragona speaks with Tim Thurley about gun policy in Canada, discussing the current state of firearm regulations, the shift away from a past political consensus, and whether recent legislative changes are effectively targeting crime. They explore the role of licensing, background checks, and storage laws, as well as the impact of smuggled firearms and high-profile policy changes like Bill C-21 and the handgun freeze. Thurley argues that recent policy shifts focus on legal gun owners while failing to address the main sources of gun crime in Canada. On Today's Episode – Mark and John dive right in and start us off by talking some of Biden's history of lying. With his possible cognitive decline along with major media outlets so trying to protect him, Biden is one of the weakest candidates for President of all time. We jump over to jobs, and what are the true numbers. People feel like their wages are down, but the Biden Administration keeps saying wages are up, but they are NOT up against the record inflation. The government puts all these regulations on, which causes operating costs to go up, or they make businesses responsible for functions that are a government function. When you look at Biden, Warren, or Sanders – they spend all day talking about tax the rich. They never tell us what a “fair share” is, nor do they talk about 1% paying 40% of the budget. Dr. John R. Lott, Jr. the president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, is an economist and a world-recognized expert on guns and crime. (from 2011) Byron Johnson, author of "More God, Less Crime: Why Faith Matters and How it could matter more."
Our guest today is Dr. John Lott. Dr. Lott is the President of the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), which is a research and education organization dedicated to providing an objective and accurate scientific evaluation of both the costs and benefits of gun ownership as well as policing activities. He is a world-recognized expert on guns and crime and the author of a number of books including "More Guns, Less Crime" and his latest "The War On Guns: Arming Yourself Against Gun Control Lies". 1) People who want more legal restrictions on Responsibly Armed Citizens have been peddling the phrase “Guns are the leading cause of death in children”. You recently posted some research results that show that to be a false claim. Let's dig into the reasons why that is false. - Some reports use stats for ages 3-24 - there is a spike in the ages of 15-16 and particularly for black males - reports use all deaths involving firearms (including suicides and justifiable self-defense homicides) 2) We all want to save lives and make our communities safer. The Gun-Control Advocates claim that raising the age of gun-ownership to 21 will be the magic to do just that. Based on your research, will that change in the law really save lives? 3) California Governor Newsom is pushing for an Amendment to the US Constitution to restrict Gun Rights. Does his proposal make any sense to the stated goal of saving lives? • Raising the federal minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21 • Mandating universal background checks • Instituting a waiting period for all gun purchases • Barring civilian purchase of “assault weapons” 4) You recently testified at a Texas House Select Committee offering compelling information about how to effectively protect our schools – and that armed staff will save lives because they are the true immediate responders – and the Legislators simply ignored the facts and instead attacked your character. How important is it to speak up as you did even in the face of insult? 5) You made an interesting wager recently...asking Gun-Control activists to put their money where their theories are. Talk to us about that. - If Brazil's Firearm Ban Is So Great, Why Won't Gun-Control Activists Bet On It?

"More guns equal less crime" is perhaps one of the most pervasive myths in the United States; the reality is, firearms simply don't make us safer. This false data has since been used as justification in any number of laws, and is frequency referenced in gun lobby rhetoric. It's also been used as the basis for other false (yet popular) claims, like the myth that shooters choose "gun free zones" to commit their crimes. Why is the vast majority of the population not only law-abiding but benevolent, generous, and kind? What differs between these people and those who behave oppositely? And what role does religion play in helping people flourish in different societies? These are the questions that Byron Johnson investigates in his work as a criminologist and Distinguished Professor of Social Sciences at Baylor University. Press play to learn: How many billions of dollars are donated every day to charities, and who's donating it What hundreds of studies show about the relationship between religion and faith, and the ability to turn one's life around and form a new identity Why religion is a major subfield of criminology (and how it predicts who will express criminal behavior and who won't) Faith-based solutions in the foundation and transformation of prisons Prison and probation – could there be a happy middle ground? Today's show rundown: It occurred to Chuck, how the Democrats really feel about America. Not the average Democrat voter, Im talking the Elites - Mark says they think the American people are stupid (remember Hillary). Chuck says the Dems in Washington hold up Biden like he is a saint with "all he has accomplished". But he hasn't done anything for the average person, and it is disturbing that these Elitists feel that you just do not matter to them. You don't hear much about the DOJ filing against the State of Georgia. Chuck goes into quoting Game of Thrones..."Chaos if the ladder to power" - clearly some of these characters were Democrats. This is the reason Ben Franklin said those who trade temporary freedom for security shall have neither. The Left wants to make it so chaotic that people will just give up their rights. Pelosi gets up there and acts like she is all in on going to war with Russia. We are introduced to our guest today, and Chuck starts us out with a question about crime - why are people in NYC, Chicago and places like that, why are they tolerating the crime that is going on. John tells us that its just not that risky to be a criminal in these cities right now. With cuts to the Police and lesser punishments for serious crimes, its no big deal to be a violent criminal in these democratic havens. More about John Lott, Jr.: Dr. John R. We've all been appalled by yet another school shooting, this time in Uvalde, Texas. We want these tragedies to stop. We want to do something. Of course the cries to “do something” almost always means doing something about guns. Yet, the gun bill just signed into law by President Biden is unlikely to prevent future school shootings. There's a lot of evidence to show why it won't work, especially when existing gun laws appear to cost more lives than they save. So says Dr. John Lott, my guest on this episode, and the nation's leading expert on guns and gun laws. Dr. Lott, with a PhD in economics, is president of the Crime Prevention Research Center. With almost three decades of research, his many books including More Guns, Less Crime, The Bias Agains Guns and Gun Control Myths which show that by allowing adults to carry concealed weapons significantly reduces crime in America. Some things you may find surprising: Between 1950 and May 2022, 96% of mass public shootings in the United States occurred in places where citizens were banned from carrying guns. Yet the mainstream media refuses to mention that the attacks occur in “gun-free” zones. “If someone were threatening you or your family, would you feel safe putting a sign in front of your home that said this home is a gun-free zone?” asks John. America's “average” gun crime statistics are badly distorted by black on black murders in our inner cities. Even average deaths of children killed by guns include teenagers, and most of those gun crimes are gang murders. “When people cite the rise in “mass shootings” in America, we need to know that almost 90% are gangs fighting each other over drug turf.” Survey data and news reports show that the fear that targeted victims might be armed deters criminals, and that guns are used in self-defense or to ward off criminal threats about 2.3 million times a year. “Burglars in the United States spend about twice as long casing a home before they break in compared to their British counterparts. What's the reason that they give? They're worried about getting shot.” In the more that 30 years since John Lott wrote More Guns, Less Crime, his facts, arguments and recommendations remain true as ever.
Here's our stand alone discussion with Dr John Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center and the author of many books including "More Guns, Less Crime". We go in depth on issues surrounding the Uvalde shooting and how the measures proposed would do nothing to prevent further acts of violence.
