FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageAt this pivotal moment in Catholic history, the Church prepares for a conclave that differs dramatically from its predecessors. Following Pope Francis's passing, 133 cardinal electors from over 70 countries will gather in Rome to select the 267th successor to St. Peter – a process shrouded in tradition yet facing unprecedented modern challenges. What makes this conclave unique? Unlike previous papal elections where cardinals shared cultural backgrounds and regular interactions, today's globally diverse College of Cardinals features many electors who barely know each other. Pope Francis deliberately appointed cardinals from historically underrepresented regions like Haiti, Mongolia, and Rwanda, creating what David Kaiser calls "the wild card" of this conclave – unfamiliarity among the very men tasked with this monumental decision.George Weigel's book "The Next Pope" provides crucial context, positioning this election at a "critical breakpoint" in the Church's fifth epochal transition – the ongoing shift from Counter-Reformation Catholicism to the Church of the New Evangelization. The evidence is clear: where Catholicism boldly proclaims unchanging truths without cultural accommodation, it flourishes spectacularly. Look to sub-Saharan Africa, where despite centuries of Islamic dominance, Catholic communities now thrive with 236 million faithful – representing nearly 19% of global Catholicism.Key Points from the Episode:• 133 cardinal electors from over 70 countries will participate in the conclave, likely beginning May 6-7• Many cardinals do not know each other well due to unprecedented geographic diversity• Hollywood's portrayal of conclaves (like the recent film) misrepresents Church realities• The Catholic Church has undergone five major transitions throughout its 2000-year history• George Weigel identifies key qualities needed in the next pope in his book "The Next Pope"• Churches teaching the full truth of Revelation without cultural accommodation are thriving globally• Sub-Saharan Africa represents extraordinary Catholic growth with 236 million Catholics (19% of global Catholic population)• The next pope must emphasize the universal call to holiness for all baptized Christians• Both lay Catholics and clergy need better understanding of their baptismal responsibility to evangelizeLet us pray for these cardinal electors, that they may have wisdom in their next election of the successor to the apostle Peter, and as always, let's keep fighting the good fight.Join us in our next episode as we examine the potential papal candidates who might soon guide the Barque of Peter through these challenging waters of faith.Other resources: Want to leave a review? FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageBasketball changed forever on March 26, 1979. What might have been just another NCAA championship game instead became the launching pad that transformed college basketball into the cultural phenomenon we now know as March Madness. Seth Davis' masterful book "When March Went Mad" chronicles this pivotal moment when Magic Johnson's Michigan State Spartans faced Larry Bird's undefeated Indiana State Sycamores. The magic of this matchup wasn't just about the basketball. It was about contrasting personalities that captured America's imagination—Magic with his megawatt smile and flashy play style versus Bird's stoic demeanor and precision shooting from "another zip code." Their presence on college basketball's biggest stage drew an astounding 35.1 million viewers and a 24.1 Nielsen rating, still the highest-rated basketball game ever broadcast, outperforming even Michael Jordan's most-watched NBA Finals game. What makes Davis' storytelling particularly captivating is how he goes beyond the box score to reveal the human drama. Through interviews with over 150 people connected to the game, we're transported behind the scenes to production meetings where NBC executives made the pivotal decision to focus on star power: "Nobody cares about Bob King. What about Magic and Bird?" That decision set the template for how basketball would be marketed for decades to come. (see below about Bob King and his good health outcome)While Michigan State won 75-64, the true victor was college basketball itself. This single game lit the fuse that would explode into the tournament obsession we know today, complete with office pools, bracket challenges, and buzzer-beater moments that unite fans across America each March. Whether you're a longtime basketball junkie or just curious about how cultural phenomena take shape, this book reveals how forty minutes of basketball forever changed American sports.Key Points from the Episode:• Basketball junkie David Kaiser shares personal memories of falling in love with March Madness as a child• The 1979 championship game drew an unprecedented 24.1 Nielsen rating with 35.1 million viewers• NBC executives made the crucial decision to focus coverage on Magic and Bird rather than other storylines• Behind-the-scenes look at how television production decisions shaped basketball broadcasting• Michigan State won 75-64, but the real winner was college basketball itself• No basketball game since—college or pro—has matched the ratings of this cultural touchstone• The decade following this game (1979-1989) represents the golden age of college basketballKeep fighting the good fight and enjoy the madness of March!Other resources: Side note on Bob King stepping down as head coach which may result in questions, here is my research"After leaving his coaching role, King continued as Athletic Director until 1980, after which he largely withdrew from public roles in athletics, likely due to his health. King passed away in 2004 at age 81, he is remembered for his basketball legacy at Indiana State and the University of New Mexico."Want to leave a review? There are some topics that historians know not to touch. They are just too hot (or too cold). The assassination of JFK is one of them. Most scholars would say either: (a) the topic has been done to death so nothing new can be said or (b) it's been so thoroughly co-opted by nutty theorists that no sane discussion is possible. Thank goodness David Kaiser believes neither of these things, for if he did we would never have his thought-provoking The Road to Dallas. The Assassination of John F. Kennedy (Harvard UP, 2008). Taking a professional historian's skills to documents old and new, Kaiser provides what is doubtless the best argument available that the assassination was in fact a conspiracy, though not the one you may know from a certain movie by Oliver Stone. He weighs each piece of evidence and builds his case point by point. Conclusions are never forced but follow naturally from the record. Not everyone will agree with Kaiser's position, but it must be taken seriously by anyone interested in the topic. Kaiser has thrown down the gauntlet to those who believe Oswald acted alone. Now it is for other historians to take it up. PS: Read David's blog “History Unfolding.” Please become a fan of “New Books in History” on Facebook if you haven't already. Join Hugh Ross in this breaking News of the Day episode of Stars, Cells, and God. Hugh describes a discovery that may resolve a long-standing mystery about dark matter. Primordial Black Holes Resolve Dark Matter Mystery? Dark matter is matter that doesn't interact with light or interacts at an extremely weak level. The quantity of dark matter that exists and its locations in the universe are not mysteries. Dark matter's composition is a mystery that has stymied astronomers and physicists for 5 decades. Leading candidates for dark matter's composition are axions and sterile neutrinos, but neither of these particles has been detected. Physicists Elba Alonso-Monsalve and David Kaiser propose that primordial black holes (PBHs) could make up all or a large fraction of dark matter if they formed previous to a tenth of a quadrillionth of a second after the cosmic creation event. These PBHs would take two forms: atom-sized bodies with masses equal to that Deimos and Phobos; bodies a ten thousandth the diameter of a proton with masses equal to a ton, with only the first form possibly existing to the present time. Observable tests for these PBHs include the degree to which they would 1) shift the balance between protons and neutrons, 2) cause ripples in the cosmic spacetime fabric, and 3) affect the amount of helium produced during the universe's first 3 minutes. This episode is a rigorous examination of an array of issues ranging from the Supreme Court's dismissal of student loan forgiveness to the problematic implementation of the Infrastructure Investment Act. With only a pittance of its funds actually reaching infrastructure projects, the Act serves as a stark example of mismanagement. February 4, 1957, manager Joe McCarthy and outfielder Sam Crawford are elected to the Hall of Fame. McCarthy, the winningest manager in history, won nine pennants and four consecutive World Championships with the New York Yankees. Crawford, one of the greatest hitters of the dead-ball era, finished his career with 309 triples, first on the all-time list. Some have challenged Sam Crawford's status as a Hall of Famer, but the truth is that Crawford was one of the best sluggers of his era, hands down. Consider: Crawford retired as the American League career leader in home runs, extra-base hits, total bases, RBI, and triples. From 1910 to 1915 (when he was 30-35 years old), Sam led the AL in games played, total bases, RBI, extra-base hits, and triples. He was second in homers and hits, third in runs created, fourth in slugging, and batted .320 for that six-year stretch. He ranked that high while Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Home Run Baker, and Joe Jackson were in their prime. His total of 643 RBI from 1910-1915 were 118 more than his closest rival in the American League! Somehow however, it took a campaign by Cobb to get his teammate into the Hall of Fame.Though he never played in the major leagues, Joe McCarthy earned the respect of his players as one of the most successful managers in history. He guided two teams to the World Series, and orchestrated four consecutive World Championships at the helm of the Yankees, from 1936 to 1939. He relied on his remarkable memory, his "Ten Commandments of Baseball," and his brillant ability to manage all types of players, and ended up with the highest winning percentage in the history of the game.Description"With his lantern jaw and chunky body," wrote author David Kaiser, "he could be an impressive presence on the field, and although he respected umpires, he also knew how to try to intimidate them in a key game."

Sarfatti was a leading member of the Fundamental Fysiks Group, an informal group of physicists in California in the 1970s who, according to historian of science David Kaiser, aimed to inspire some of the investigations into quantum physics that underlie parts of quantum information science. "Scientists are not born, they are made" David Kaiser Today's guest on the podcast is David Kaiser, Germeshausen Professor of the History of Science and Professor of Physics at MIT. In history of science, David is best known for his books on the history of modern physics including Drawing Theories Apart, Quantum Legacies, and a personal favourite, How the Hippies Saved Physics, which in part looks at how changing cultural conditions in 1970s USA, including severe cutbacks in the funding of physics and the emergence of counterculture, gave rise to an unusual group of physicists who helped rejuvenate more speculative physics. In a fitting follow up to Rachel Ankeny's episode last week on research repertoires, today David discusses the role of education, scientific training, and pedagogy in the production of scientific knowledge. Some links related to this episode can be found below:Profile: David I. Freeman Dyson (1923–2020)—renowned scientist, visionary, and iconoclast—helped invent modern physics. Not bound by disciplinary divisions, he went on to explore foundational topics in mathematics, astrophysics, and the origin of life. General readers were introduced to Dyson's roving mind and heterodox approach in his 1979 book Disturbing the Universe, a poignant autobiographical reflection on life and science.  "Well, Doc, You're In": Freeman Dyson's Journey through the Universe (MIT Press, 2022) (the title quotes Richard Feynman's remark to Dyson at a physics conference) offers a fresh examination of Dyson's life and work, exploring his particular way of thinking about deep questions that range from the nature of matter to the ultimate fate of the universe. The chapters—written by leading scientists, historians, and science journalists, including some of Dyson's colleagues—trace Dyson's formative years, his budding interests and curiosities, and his wide-ranging work across the natural sciences, technology, and public policy. They describe Dyson's innovations at the intersection of quantum theory and relativity, his novel nuclear reactor design (and his never-realized idea of a spacecraft powered by nuclear weapons), his years at the Institute for Advanced Study, and his foray into cosmology. In the coda, Dyson's daughter Esther reflects on growing up in the Dyson household. “Well, Doc, You're In” assesses Dyson's successes, blind spots, and influence, assembling a portrait of a scientist's outsized legacy. Contributors: Jeremy Bernstein, Robbert Dijkgraaf, Esther Dyson, George Dyson, Ann Finkbeiner, Amanda Gefter, Ashutosh Jogalekar, David Kaiser, Caleb Scharf, William Thomas. Matthew Jordan is a university instructor, funk musician, and clear writing enthusiast. He studies the history of science and technology, driven by the belief that we must understand the past in order to improve the future. Learn more about your ad choices.  Inspired by David Kaiser's 2011 book, How the Hippies Saved Physics: Science, Counterculture, and the Quantum Revival, this episode will cover the discomfort many physicists experienced while grappling with quantum mechanics and how their unconventional methods led to quantum key encryption. Like many Americans of the 1960s and 70s, some physicists took part in questioning traditional institutions. They engaged in philosophical questions of quantum mechanics driven by Bell's Theorem that revealed entangled particles' seemingly father-than-light communication could not be explained by any known mechanism. While other physicists put their heads down and calculated, these hippie physicists dabbled in psychedelics, consulted with magicians, attempted to communicate with ghosts through atomic decay, and tried to communicate with each other–telepathically. They also questioned whether Western science's objective observer tradition was sufficient for quantum physics where observing a particle's behavior changes it. Though some of their investigations may be deemed pseudoscience, there was value in thinking outside the box (or infinite potential well, for the physicists listening) and from their work, we know more about quantum mechanics and its applications.

In this episode of The Glenn Show, I’m back with my friend John McWhorter, and we have much to discuss. John joins me fresh from a day trip to Brighton Beach, a neighborhood in Brooklyn where Russian language, food, and culture abound. He talks about teaching himself Russian and the benefits of the Glossika language-learning tool. Then, in a continuation of last week’s conversation with David Kaiser, we move on to the history of redlining, which is quite a bit more complex than some recent commentaries would have you believe. A recent edition of John’s New York Times newsletter addressed the issue, and it received some criticism from the distinguished historian Thomas Sugrue. This leads us to discuss the problems of authority and perception that attend writing from the Olympian heights of the paper of record. From there, I give a progress report on my memoir, delving into my life, my break from conservatism in the ‘90s, and the difficulty of living in good faith. The temptation to “play to the crowd,” to seek affirmation by repeating the common sense of your tribe, is very powerful, and it can work on you in subtle ways. Heterodox thinkers like John and I have to check ourselves constantly to make sure we’re being true to our own thought and principles. In that spirit, we end on a question that’s sure to ruffle some feathers here at my Substack: How can we start seriously addressing questions about “systemic racism” and stop simply disregarding them as just so much wokespeak? As always, I’m curious to hear your thoughts! A New Home for TGSThe video for this episode is hosted on my new YouTube channel, which is now the home of The Glenn Show.
