✏️ Show Notes:What happens when the land of tomorrow starts to feel stuck in yesterday? In this solo episode of Hangin' at the Hangar Bar, Scott takes a deep dive into the history, current state, and hopeful future of Tomorrowland. From its origins at the 1964 World's Fair to the neon sci-fi chaos we know today, we explore why designing “the future” is one of Imagineering's greatest challenges.Joining Scott as a very special (and digital) guest is TomorrowBot, an AI assistant who might sound suspiciously familiar. Together, they ask:Why has Tomorrowland struggled to keep up with the world it once dreamed of?Is it time to rename it “Walt's Tomorrowland”?What kind of attraction could bring it back to life?Expect thoughtful storytelling, some dry Gen X humor, and a brand-new ride concept that could reshape how guests experience the land of tomorrow—without turning it into a tech demo or another IP dump.So grab your mouse ears, charge your imagination, and come dream a little bigger. The future's still bright... we just haven't built it yet.
In this episode of the Roadmap to Secure Love podcast, Kim and Kyle dive deep into one of the most essential—yet overlooked—tools for emotional well-being: your gut. If you've ever struggled with how to trust yourself, this conversation offers powerful insight into why so many of us ignore our inner signals—and how we can begin to honor them instead.
Most AI safety conversations centre on alignment: ensuring AI systems share our values and goals. But despite progress, we're unlikely to know we've solved the problem before the arrival of human-level and superhuman systems in as little as three years. So some are developing a backup plan to safely deploy models we fear are actively scheming to harm us — so-called “AI control.” While this may sound mad, given the reluctance of AI companies to delay deploying anything they train, not developing such techniques is probably even crazier.Today's guest — Buck Shlegeris, CEO of Redwood Research — has spent the last few years developing control mechanisms, and for human-level systems they're more plausible than you might think. He argues that given companies' unwillingness to incur large costs for security, accepting the possibility of misalignment and designing robust safeguards might be one of our best remaining options.Links to learn more, highlights, video, and full transcript. As Buck puts it: "Five years ago I thought of misalignment risk from AIs as a really hard problem that you'd need some really galaxy-brained fundamental insights to resolve. Whereas now, to me the situation feels a lot more like we just really know a list of 40 things where, if you did them — none of which seem that hard — you'd probably be able to not have very much of your problem."Of course, even if Buck is right, we still need to do those 40 things — which he points out we're not on track for. And AI control agendas have their limitations: they aren't likely to work once AI systems are much more capable than humans, since greatly superhuman AIs can probably work around whatever limitations we impose.Still, AI control agendas seem to be gaining traction within AI safety. Buck and host Rob Wiblin discuss all of the above, plus:Why he's more worried about AI hacking its own data centre than escapingWhat to do about “chronic harm,” where AI systems subtly underperform or sabotage important work like alignment researchWhy he might want to use a model he thought could be conspiring against himWhy he would feel safer if he caught an AI attempting to escapeWhy many control techniques would be relatively inexpensiveHow to use an untrusted model to monitor another untrusted modelWhat the minimum viable intervention in a “lazy” AI company might look likeHow even small teams of safety-focused staff within AI labs could matterThe moral considerations around controlling potentially conscious AI systems, and whether it's justifiedChapters:Cold open |00:00:00| Who's Buck Shlegeris? |00:01:27| What's AI control? |00:01:51| Why is AI control hot now? |00:05:39| Detecting human vs AI spies |00:10:32| Acute vs chronic AI betrayal |00:15:21| How to catch AIs trying to escape |00:17:48| The cheapest AI control techniques |00:32:48| Can we get untrusted models to do trusted work? |00:38:58| If we catch a model escaping... will we do anything? |00:50:15| Getting AI models to think they've already escaped |00:52:51| Will they be able to tell it's a setup? |00:58:11| Will AI companies do any of this stuff? |01:00:11| Can we just give AIs fewer permissions? |01:06:14| Can we stop human spies the same way? |01:09:58| The pitch to AI companies to do this |01:15:04| Will AIs get superhuman so fast that this is all useless? |01:17:18| Risks from AI deliberately doing a bad job |01:18:37| Is alignment still useful? |01:24:49| Current alignment methods don't detect scheming |01:29:12| How to tell if AI control will work |01:31:40| How can listeners contribute? |01:35:53| Is 'controlling' AIs kind of a dick move? |01:37:13| Could 10 safety-focused people in an AGI company do anything useful? |01:42:27| Benefits of working outside frontier AI companies |01:47:48| Why Redwood Research does what it does |01:51:34| What other safety-related research looks best to Buck? |01:58:56| If an AI escapes, is it likely to be able to beat humanity from there? |01:59:48| Will misaligned models have to go rogue ASAP, before they're ready? |02:07:04| Is research on human scheming relevant to AI? |02:08:03|This episode was originally recorded on February 21, 2025.Video: Simon Monsour and Luke MonsourAudio engineering: Ben Cordell, Milo McGuire, and Dominic ArmstrongTranscriptions and web: Katy Moore

On this 4th of July week, it's a good time to pause and reflect. Democracy has always been messy, always imperfect, and always a work in progress. If we're paying attention, we know that democracy is an ongoing project. What's easy to overlook is that the success of that ongoing project requires the active participation of all of us. And when that participation wanes is when opportunities arise for those who would undermine democracy or bend it to their own self-interested purposes. We are in such a time right now. If ever there were an all-hands-on-deck moment to protect and defend and expand the promise of democracy, this is it. And nonprofit leaders are in an extraordinary position to help expand that participation for those who stand to lose the most if democracy is subverted any further. In this episode, we share:The five main reasons people don't voteThe key ingredients that will help clients to reliably show up to voteThe most important thing you should do before you begin engaging clients around votingThree simple actions you can take this week to raise awareness around votingFour key pieces of information to share with clients to make it easy for them to register and voteHow to engage clients around beliefs that their vote may not matterThe basic rules on what 501(c)(3) nonprofits can and can't do around elections and votingIf you found value in this episode, please share it with other progressive nonprofit leaders. As advocates and leaders, a big part of our job is to successfully engage both decisionmakers and members of our own teams to join us in pursuit of a goal. And when we're at our most effective, we can feel that we're operating from a place of strength and assuredness and confidence that others can feel and respond to. But sometimes events happen that can undercut all of that in an instant. We get pulled into reactive emotions, and suddenly we're no longer operating from that place of assuredness and confidence. What's helpful to know is that it happens to everyone. Even the most powerful and impactful leaders experience this from time to time. But part of their secret sauce is that they know how to restore and return to their personal power very quickly. The good news is, that involves a skill set and a practice that anyone can develop. In this episode, we share:What is personal power and why does it matterThe most common ways we get pulled out of our personal powerHow to re-regulate your emotions when you experience an “emotional hijacking”How to uncover and shift your default interpretations of negative eventsHow to avoid the hidden trap that will keep you from getting the result you wantThe most common way we undermine our own personal power, and how to fix itIf you found value in this episode, please share it with other progressive nonprofit leaders. Have you ever wondered if you are too much or too needy? We carry a lot of baggage around our needs, others' needs, and the many mixed messages about having needs but doing everything possible to not be seen as ‘being needy'.The result? A relentless pursuit to keep our needs hidden, fueling feelings of scarcity, shame, and worry. But needs are an inherent part of being human. In a society that has weaponized needs so that if you need, you are “needy,” the idea of expressing our needs even evokes fear and shame. And we've created a moral binary around needs–good to have needs, bad to be needy, or good to help people but bad to be helped–which is exhausting and only serves to prop up the myth of rugged individualism.Today's guest joins me for a deep dive exploring our complicated relationship with needs and neediness. The Reason for Antiparticles. The Field Guide to Particle Physics : Season 3. If you're looking to support the show, we've got some fun options for you here, or you could buy us a coffee!ReferencesThe definitive resource for all data in particle physics is the Particle Data Group: https://pdg.lbl.gov. This episode also pays tribute to Richard Feynman's 1986 Memorial Dirac Lecture.Terrell-Penrose rotation can be viewed from a human perspective in at "A Slower Speed of Light" by MIT's GameLab. That demo also includes the relativistic doppler effect. Some other great videos by Ute Kraus and Corvin Zahn at spacetimetravel.org. See in particular their dice demo. The Reason for Antiparticles.Antimatter is uncommon, but it's not exactly rare. Antiparticles - especially those generated by cosmic radiation - are all around us, all the time. But just what is it doing here?Antimatter is just like MatterIn a lot of ways, antimatter behaves just like matter does. Quarks make up protons? Antiquarks make up antiprotons… and antineutrons, too!Antiprotons and antielectrons - that is, positrons - combine to form antihydrogen atoms. The Antihydrogen Laser PHysics Apparatus - the ALPHA Experiment at CERN - studies the spectroscopic properties of antihydrogen. That is, it uses photons to give a little extra energy boost to those positrons. As those positrons relax to their ground state, they emit distinct wavelengths of light.Just like regular hydrogen atoms.Photons, you see, are their own antiparticles. They interact with matter and antimatter in precisely the same way.If there were any difference between hydrogen and antihydrogen - any difference in mass, spin or the magnitude of their electric charge - those wavelengths of emitted light would also be different. And the ALPHA experiment would be able to detect those differences. But no such differences have been observed. So again, what exactly is antimatter doing here in our physical reality?Antimatter annihilates MatterThe one thing antimatter does *not* do is hang around.Antimatter annihilates with ordinary matter. Electrons and positrons annihilate to form a pair of gamma rays, a pair of photons. If the universe were balanced between matter and antimatter, we wouldn't be here. Or… perhaps worse… we'd rapidly disintegrate into a bursts of gamma radiation as our particles and those antiparticle partners annihilated. So if antimatter is so uncommon - why is it even here? What is the point, the reason for antimatter? Why does the universe need antimatter? To understand that, we need to talk about time travel. The Light ConeOur reality has four dimensions. Three space and one time. Famously, Einstein's special theory of relativity tell us that these four dimensions are related. That relationship is nature's conspiracy to make sure that nothing travels faster than the speed of light. One way to think about how this works is time travel. Literally traveling through time. When we are still, we are traveling forward, through time. When we spring up to go for a run, we're still traveling through time, but we *rotate* our perceived motion through time into space. This is a four-dimensional sort of rotation. Sometimes this is called a Terrell rotation. There are some stunning visualizations of Terrell rotation linked in the show notes. The amount of Terrell rotation varies without speed. In a sense, we exchange some of our speed in the time direction to travel through space. The faster we go through space, the slower we go through time. There is a limit to this kind of rotation. We cannot rotate our motion so deep into space that we travel backwards in time. The most we can do is cause time to stand almost still, which happens when we travel just shy of the speed of light.Light of course always and only travels at the speed of light, in the absence of matter anyway. And because everything that must travel slower than light - everything that has mass - like protons, electrons, atoms and US - is subject to the ultimate cosmic constraint: the light cone.To visualize this four-dimensional cone, think of a camera flash. It's a sphere of light moving outwards from a point. The tip of the cone is us snapping the photo, and the vertical part of the cone corresponds to the dimension of time.At any moment, our reality can be cut into two regions: inside or outside the light cone. All those points that light can touch - and those that it can't. Inside the light cone represents everything we can possibly hope to effect later in time. Outside the light cone is outside of our agency to do so.The light cone - in other words - represents the boundary of causality.Because we cannot travel faster than the speed of light, any Terrell rotation we experience inside our light cone retains a positive flow of time - however slow. But outside the light cone, that same rotation can cause our perception of time to reverse. Outside our light cone, if we are traveling fast enough, we can perceive time as flowing backwards. It's a fun thought exercise to figure out how we might perceive an event outside our own light cone - I'll leave that one for you to figure out - but here's a hint: “wait and see”.If you're curious, check out our instagram account in the coming days for the answer.Time flowing backwards might seem terrible for cause an effect. It would literally reverse the two! But time flowing backwards outside our light cone - outside our sphere of influence - has no bearing on our physical reality. As long as our causal influence is restricted to inside the light cone, the observable universe makes sense. Now let's tie this back to particle physics. You'd see, the relationship between the world inside and outside the light cone is intimately related to the relationship between matter and antimatter. The Feynman-Stückelberg Interpretation of Negative EnergiesThe celebrated Dirac equation - the mathematics which describes particles likethe electron - suggests that positrons are just electrons with negative energy. But what is negative energy? This interpretation was confusing for quite some time. But energy you see is intimately related to time. As time is to space, energy is to motion through space. Energy, in other words, can be thought of as motion through time.So an antiparticle with negative energy can be thought of as a particle with positive energy moving backwards though time.In his 1986 lecture commemorating Dirac, Feynman - who is credited with formalizing this interpretation - gave a concise, technical and frankly satisfying explanation for this phenomena. It went something like this:Quantum Theory also predicts that particles tend to smear out like a wave. In atoms, electrons smear out to form standing waves, which we call electron orbitals. In modern language, we say that these waves are really probability distributions for a particles position and momentum.Left to their own devices, quantum mechanics tells us that these probability distributions spread out in space. For example, when an alpha particle's smeared probability distribution spreads outside the nucleus, there is a nonzero chance that it will tunnel through, and escape as radiation: alpha radiation. So you might ask. Can the probability distribution of an electron spread outside the light cone?Unfortunately, the answer is yes.And if you've studied quantum mechanics, this is probably no surprise. The path integral formulation requires us to consider every conceivable motion of the electron - including those moving faster than the speed of light. So it might seem that Quantum Mechanics and Einstein's theory of special relativity are fundamentally incompatible. If true, this would be a huge problem. Anything moving faster than the speed of light - even by means of quantum mechanics - could mess with our notion of cause and effect. Causality is central to our ability to perform experiments - to make sense of our physical world. And yet. Quantum Mechanics is compatible with relativity. You see, the smeared probability distribution for the positron can also leak through the light cone.Taken together, fortunately, the probability amplitudes for particle and antiparticles to be outside the light cone cancel each other out exactly. Why exactly? Because matter and matter are identical - at least up to that overall minus sign. It's just that what we call reality - sometimes - occasionally splits into particle / antiparticle pairs - or not - depending on how fast we're moving. In short. The reason for antiparticles is causality. The Alpha Experiment, RevistedThis is a simplification, to be sure. There are plenty of details to discuss about so-called virtual particles, parity and particle-antiparticle annihilation. Perhaps another time.If you're interested in more of the details, a good place to start looking would be Feynman's 1986 Dirac Lecture at Cambridge, linked in the show notes. With any mature scientific theory, there are nuances and details that are exciting to explore. We'll see more soon enough. But for now, let's just say that the ALPHA experiment - that experiment at CERN looking for differences between Hydrogen and AntiHydrogen - has searched for violations in causality - that is, violations to the CPT theorem - and has excluded them at the level of 200 parts per trillion. The Pasayten Institute is on a mission to build and share physics knowledge, without barriers! Ryan shares some words of wisdom in this episode, below are some of the highlights. Making people matterThe inspiration for Charles' book is a sad one, having lost a well-loved colleague suddenly – Jason had a contagious energy and passion for customer service, and made everyone he met feel like they matter with just one line: “Thanks for coming in today.”Charles knew he would miss hearing that line from Jason, every day, and has honoured him ever since by greeting employees at his hotel with the same line. He says that now and then, someone gets confused – of course they are there if they were rostered on – but it's about letting them know that you truly appreciate their time and effort on that day!“Every job matters, and it really matters when people make the decision to come to work. We're one or two people away, every day, from either a really great day or pure hell, because every person's presence has an impact.”A mop can be replaced – your best employee cannot!Charles acknowledges that the secrets to building a happy and motivated team probably can't be shared in just a few sentences, but boils it down to these fundamentals:Leadership – Your leaders must be genuinely appreciative of the time and effort that their team puts in every single day. It all starts there – but there's more at play here…The right tools – Charles shares a story about a long-term housekeeper who left a job simply because her manager wouldn't budget the few dollars it costs to replace her old and dirty mop; the single most important thing for her to be able to do her job well. For this reason, Charles keeps a “mop list” – the things that people just really need to do their job well.“We may not want to admit this to ourselves, but employees don't come to work, excited to provide customer service for their manager or the brand. They want to provide good service because it makes them feel good and it's a representation of themselves. So if you're not providing them with the tools that they need to do the job, you're impacting their personal representation.”The right people - When hiring, the Westin's final step in the interviewing process is to look for a passion for customer service – someone with ‘a servant heart' who lives to make others smile. This passion makes everything else easier - from on-boarding to living out the “service pledge”(more below). Blow people away with the service basicsCharles is a big believer in creating a “service pledge” for your brand, and is surprised at the number of businesses who haven't taken the time to develop this foundation. A service pledge reflects the basic service standards that everyone in the business lives out for every customer – super simple, but incredibly important. Here's one service basic that should be at the top of everyone's list, and one that consistently earns positive feedback from guests at the Westin Fort Lauderdale – the 20/10 rule. “Within 20 feet of a customer make eye contact. Within 10 feet, there must be a verbal exchange; hello, good morning, how's your stay going? This simple exchange is the single most important way to make your business feel friendly, and will quickly change the vibe of an environment.”And we'll leave you with one last quote for continuous improvement that Charles lives by, from Buddy LaRosa (a frontline success magician himself!):“Good, better, best. Never let it rest… until your good is better, and your better is best”
We all like a little structure in our lives, even if that just means eating the same thing for breakfast every morning (hello, fruit smoothies), but sometimes it's the things we can't plan for that make the biggest impact. Whether that's something positive, like meeting someone who helps you elevate your business, or something not-so-positive, like getting caught in a hurricane, any change to the norm can be a little rattling. So what do you do when that sense of order and “normalcy” goes out the window? If you're anything like the average person, you might feel a strong urge to hide in that storm shelter, bury your head between your knees, and wait for things to blow over... The problem is that you won't often find golden opportunities waiting inside. So, you decide to brave the rain and winds (and maybe even a few lightning strikes), but ONLY after making a plan. If you ask Lee Jackson, a good old-fashioned action plan is the most important tool in a business' survival kit - well, that, and the ability to pivot faster than clients can say, “We've decided to go in another direction.” As an agency owner and host of the Agency Trailblazer podcast, Lee has spent his career planning and pivoting on repeat, a habit which has led him safely through such panic-inducing storms as the dotcom bubble burst. In this episode of Profit and Impact, Lee shares his storm survival plan for businesses, including a few critical tools like the ability to find (and keep) your ideal clients, start the right conversations, and pivot like a pro. So what's this conversation REALLY about? Embracing the entrepreneurial spirit How to carve out a niche that worksHow to build client relationships that matterThe value of upskilling The real meaning of serendipity Why you should listen If you need a little extra sunshine in your life, the story of Lee Jackson's career will inspire you to keep on pivoting your way through stormy days, and maybe even pick up the phone once in a while. Links Agency Trailblazer leematthewjackson.com You can quote me on that... “Yes, everything's on hold, but people are thinking about the future, and if you're talking to them during the bad times, they're sure as hell gonna remember you in the good times.” - Lee Jackson Like what you hear? Interest expenses are often an investors largest tax deduction. You must realise that the onus of proof is on the taxpayer (you), not the ATO. That is, you must be able to prove to the ATO that your deductions are legitimate. If you are not able to do that unequivocally, you risk the tax deduction being denied in full (and you will have to pay interest and penalties). Therefore, it is wise to understand some basic tax rules so that you do not inadvertently put any of your tax deductions as risk. There is a lot more detail (whole chapter) in my latest book, Rules of the Lending Game, but below is a summary of the top 10 rules that relate to investment loans.(1) You only get one chance to set the maximum tax-deductible loanThe initial amount you borrow when you first acquire an investment will be the maximum tax-deductible loan amount. For example, if you purchase a property for $800,000 the total cost of the acquisition will be $845,000 including stamp duty. If you have $300,000 of cash, you need to borrow $545,000. In this situation, $545,000 will be the maximum tax-deductible loan. You cannot go back to the bank and increase the loan at a later stage because the “purpose” determines it tax-deductibility (which I discuss below). A possible solution to this would have been to borrow the full cost and deposit monies in a linked offset – more about this below.(2) Loan applicants may not have tax consequencesWho’s name the loan is in (i.e. the loan applicants) typically has no impact on the deductibility of the debt. From the perspective of the ATO, especially with spouses, the main determining factor regarding deductibility is (1) who owns the asset in question – i.e. whose name is on the title; and (2) who has been making the repayments. For example, if the investment property is in the husband’s name but the loan is in joint names, and repayments are being made from a bank account that is solely in the husband’s name, the husband should be entitled to 100 per cent of the tax deduction (Taxation Ruling TR 93/32).It’s preferable (and cleaner) if you can arrange for the name(s) on the loan to match the name(s) on the title, as this eliminates any doubt. However, some lenders’ policies or procedures might make this difficult, costly (in terms of time or legal costs) or impossible. It’s wise to document why the loan has been established in this way – that is, because the bank declined to set up the loan solely in the owner’s name.(3) The owner must make loan repaymentsA common mistake is that repayments in respect to a loan used to fund an investment in one spouse’s name come from a joint account i.e. in both spouse’s names. In this situation, the ATO could argue that since both of you have been repaying the loan, the deduction should be split. However, since only one spouse owns the property, only that spouse is entitled to a deduction – and consequently now half of the interest is not tax deductible! To avoid this risk repayments should be debited to an account that is solely in the owner/s name.(4) A loan’s security does not matterThe property/s used to secure a loan has no bearing on its tax treatment whatsoever. For example, you could have an investment loan secured by your home and it would still be tax-deductible. The purpose for which the funds are used and who’s been making the repayments will determine the tax-deductibility.(5) Purpose is kingUltimately, the biggest determining factor as to whether interest is tax-deductible is the purpose for which the loan funds are used. This is what the ATO looks at in the first instance. If the item being financed is used for a purpose which has a direct relationship with earning assessable income (such as rental income and capital gains), then any interest charged in respect to the loan which finances that asset should be tax-deductible. Once this is established, the ATO then consider (1) who owns the investment; and (2) who’s been making the repayments. These factors determine who is eligible to claim a tax deduction. Therefore, if you established a loan to purchase an investment property which earns assessable income, and one spouse owns 100 per cent of that investment property and makes the repayments, then that spouse is 100 per cent entitled to the deduction.Sometimes people ask; “Should I borrow against my investment property to repay my home loan?” The answer is always ‘no’, because it comes back to the purpose test. The purpose of the new loan would be to repay the home loan, which is a non-deductible purpose.(6) Don’t mix loan purposes! There are lots of reasons not to use one loan for multiple purposes e.g. to use part of the loan to invest in property and part to invest in shares. Or worse, mix home debt and investment debt in the same loan. The predominant reason is that it makes record keeping difficult and therefore puts tax deductions at risk (because it weakens your justification for claiming a tax deduction).Another reason is that it can become a nightmare should you want to repay only part of the loan. The tax rule is that any repayment to a loan must be apportioned across the whole loan. You cannot allocate your repayment to just one loan purpose. Therefore, you must separate loans by purpose.(7) Redraw: be careful using itRedraw is the ability to withdraw any extra repayments. The ATO treats any redraw as a separate loan, and once again, its tax-deductibility comes back to the purpose test. For example, say that a client has a $300,000 investment loan and receives a $20,000 bonus from work. They intend to use the bonus to take a holiday at the end of the year, and so they park the $20,000 in their investment loan in the interim to save interest. This will be considered an extra repayment. If they then redraw the $20,000 at the end of the year to fund their holiday as planned, the ATO will deem that they now have two loans – one for $280,000, which is still tax-deductible (being the balance prior to the redraw), and one for $20,000. This latter amount is no longer tax-deductible, as the loan’s purpose was to finance a holiday.Essentially, when you repay a loan, you can deny yourself a future tax deduction, as you can’t simply redraw the loan back up to the original amount. You must be careful about when you use a redraw facility.(8) It is much better to offset debt, not repay itThe problem with repaying an investment loan (whether through regular or ad hoc repayments) is that you change the original tax nature of the debt. That is, as discussed earlier, if you redraw the money at a later stage, it will be treated as a new loan for tax purposes. Therefore, it’s important to preserve the original tax-deductible loan balance, which also preserves your potential future tax benefits. An offset gives you the best of both worlds – it allows you to park extra cash in it to offset the loan and reduce the amount of interest you pay, but also preserves the tax-deductible balance of that loan. The bonus is that if you ever need to pull that extra cash out of the offset to use for a non-deductible purpose in the future, you can do so in a more tax-effective manner. This is a perfect structure particularly for first home buyers as it allows them to minimise interest whilst preserving the loan amount in case their property becomes an investment in the future.(9) Borrowing expenses are tax deductibleAll borrowing expenses are tax-deductible if they relate to investment loans. Any costs under $100 are deductible in the year that they’re incurred. Any costs over $100 are deductible equally over the term of the loan or five years, whichever is less. As mortgage terms are almost always longer than five years, borrowing costs are deductible over the first five years of the loan. If you refinance or repay your loan earlier than the five-year period, you can claim the balance of the expense which you haven’t claimed a deduction for yet.Deductible costs can include expenses at time of purchase, such as application fees, title search fees, lender’s legal fees, valuations, mortgage insurance, mortgage stamp duty, loan repayment insurance, settlement fees, security or guarantee fees. Basically, any third-party fees that are payable up-front, whether they’re government or bank charges, can be deductible.(10) Keep a good paper trailIt is vital to maintain a proper paper trail. You must make clear, concise notes and keep track of all loan balances and transactions related to your investments throughout the year. If you do get audited, it’s handy to be able to go back to your notes and calculations to prove and demonstrate exactly how you arrived at a particular tax deduction and/or what that amount was used for. This is particularly relevant when you’re paying deposits, refinancing, transferring funds, paying related expenses for properties and so on. What is clear to you today won’t be as clear in five to ten years’ time, so good record keeping will help a lot.Get tax adviceThere are two reasons to visit your accountant. The most obvious – and something that people generally only consider once a year – is for the preparation of your tax return. The other thing an accountant will do is to provide taxation advice about how you should set up and fund your property investments. This is of the utmost importance and I highly recommend you be prepared to pay for it. Don’t be tempted to ‘shop around’ for an accountant based on fees alone. This is one area where you want to make sure they know their stuff.________Warning: Whilst the author, ProSolution Tax Advisory and all its directors are registered tax agents, you must not rely solely on the above information. Telstra RestructureTelstra has proposed a major restructure of its operations, splitting itself into three legal entities. David Swan at The Australian writes “The three components of the structure will be InfraCo Fixed, which would own and operate Telstra's fixed line assets; InfraCo Towers, which would own the fixed wireless assets like towers in Telstra's mobile network, and ServeCo, which would “own the active parts of the network, including the radio access network and spectrum assets”.The proposed restructure is scheduled to be completed by December 2021. The three business units will operate under the parent company Telstra Group.Non-paywalled: CEO Andrew Penn called the restructure Telstra's “biggest since privatisation” and said it would involve extensive consultation with staff, regulators, unions and other interested parties.https://www.itnews.com.au/news/telstra-plans-to-split-into-three-subsidiaries-555788 They also might start selling electricity to consumers: Andy Penn says they are applying for the necessary licences in the coming weeks. Telstra has an experienced energy team & is already heavily involved in the renewable energy sector “"We already underwrite projects that generate enough renewable energy to power about 100,000 homes, and we provide standby power that enables more renewable energy to be absorbed into the energy grid,” Penn said. This show is all about Why so many people don't care about facts and How we can change that. I continue to be in shock and disappointed about the current ideology gap that exists in my country right now. It couldn't be more obvious that one side is built entirely on lies and having a group of followers that are perfectly OK in a world where facts don't matter. Like I say in the show, I just want to get back to doing podcasts about philosophy and better relationships and balance and awareness. But, given the very scary reality of living in a cult nation and the chance it may continue, I feel it's my duty as a philosopher to continue to scream, "The Emperor Has No Clothes!" So, this show is all about Why so many people don't care about facts and How we can change that. In an era of fake news and alternative facts, the media is finding a new purpose rooted in transparency and truth. The New York Times’s purpose, “We seek the truth to help people understand the world,” hinges on a critically important idea: that the truth is worth it. In this episode, Amy Weisenbach, Senior Vice President of Marketing, talks about how this core tenet was driven by purpose and brought to life through the power of storytelling.First aired in 2017, the New York Times’s “The Truth is Worth It” campaign unpacks the journalistic process behind real New York Times headlines, and continues to probe topics ranging from the failing MTA and Trump’s tax returns to ISIS and children at the border. At the center of the campaign, said Weisenbach, is the idea that journalists are seeking the truth by holding power to accountability, bearing witness to moments of tragedy and triumph, giving a voice to the disadvantaged, and creating a shared baseline of facts. Which ultimately helps people understand the world, making their lives richer, and hopefully forming a more just society.Listen for Amy’s insights on:The value of transparency and honesty in advancing purpose in a divisive nationHow to leverage key cultural moments to tell stories that matterThe evolving role of purpose in the media, and why storytelling is an inherently purpose-driven fieldResourcesNew York Times CompanyThe Truth is Worth ItThe Daily podcastAmy Weisenbach on LinkedInThe News Literacy ProjectShe Said
