Each summer, Ross hosts a Mental Health Education Institute at UCLA to help schools normalize mental health. The Institute helps schools create a common language for mental health, provides curriculum for mental health literacy and healthy relationships and gives teachers guidelines on how to use lived experiences in the classroom. Participants from the Institute report a high level of success in changing mental health in their schools. The in person Institute is July 13-14 and the virtual Institute is July 15-16.--This episode explores the mental health skills schools never taught us and why so many young people are struggling because of it.From academic pressure and anxiety to relationships, identity, burnout, and emotional regulation, we talk about the growing need for mental health education in schools and how early conversations can change lives. In this episode of Normalize The Conversation, I sit down with Ross Szabo, a mental health advocate, educator, and founding faculty member at Geffen Academy at UCLA. Ross shares how his own struggles with depression, self-hatred, and a suicide attempt in high school led him to dedicate his life to changing the way schools approach mental health.Together, we discuss:Why students are overwhelmed and emotionally exhaustedThe pressure teens face around grades, college, and successHow schools can normalize mental health conversationsWhy coping skills and emotional education matterThe role teachers play in helping students feel seenHealthy relationships, communication, and boundariesHow connection and community protect mental healthThe difference between prevention and crisis interventionWe also explore how schools can integrate mental health into everyday learning without turning classrooms into therapy sessions. Ross explains how simple shifts — like teaching emotional awareness, communication skills, and self-check-ins — can help students feel less alone and more prepared for real life. This conversation is for students, parents, teachers, young adults, and anyone who has ever thought: “Why did no one teach me how to navigate this?”If you've ever struggled with anxiety, burnout, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or feeling overwhelmed by life transitions, this episode will remind you that emotional skills are just as important as academic success. If this episode resonates with you, share it with someone who needed these conversations growing up or someone helping build them now. Follow Normalize The Conversation for more honest conversations around mental health, healing, relationships, and emotional well-being.
Some kids are picky eaters, but when does it become something more?Feeding challenges can feel overwhelming for families, especially when mealtimes become stressful, food choices become extremely limited, or concerns about nutrition start to grow. That's why I was excited to welcome feeding specialist Margaryta Kuzmin to the podcast. Together, we unpacked the difference between typical picky eating and pediatric feeding disorders, and why early support can make such a meaningful difference.Margaryta shares the developmental reasons many children go through selective eating phases, along with important red flags that may signal a deeper concern. We also explore why feeding difficulties are rarely about food alone. Medical, nutritional, motor, sensory, and social factors can all play a role. I especially loved our discussion about how providers can approach these conversations with families in a supportive, compassionate way.Whether you're a speech-language pathologist, BCBA, educator, or parent, this conversation highlights the power of collaboration and why feeding concerns deserve attention early on.#autism #speechtherapyWhat's Inside:The difference between picky eating and pediatric feeding disordersCommon feeding red flags that professionals and parents should watch forWhy medical, nutritional, sensory, and motor factors all matterThe professionals who make up a strong feeding team and how they work togetherMentioned In This Episode:Feeding MattersKuzmin SLPMargaryta Kuzmin on InstagramEarn CEUs with a community of peers. Robinhood just launched agentic trading -- an AI that can execute stock trades and purchases on your behalf using criteria you set in advance. There's also a new agentic credit card that can shop for you automatically. Joe and Anna dig into why handing execution over to a machine is fundamentally different from using AI as a thinking partner -- and why the people most excited about AI agents for their money are often the same people who would never trust a human advisor with it.What You'll Walk Away WithWhy the psychology of trusting AI with money while distrusting human advisors doesn't hold up -- and what's actually driving itThe difference between using AI to expand your thinking and using it to execute decisions -- and why only one of those is dangerousHow AI agents eliminate the friction that protects you from your own worst financial impulses -- and why that's exactly how consumer debt gets worseJoe's four-question framework for knowing when an AI agent is actually helping versus when it's just automating overspendingWhy Doug's experience building computer systems made him more skeptical of AI agents, not less -- and what changedThe debt sequencer framework from OG and Anna: how to rank every debt by interest rate, add an honest emotional layer, and decide where the next dollar actually goesWhy the debt snowball versus avalanche debate has a cleaner answer than most people think -- and when the math genuinely doesn't matterThe one thing that happens to almost every client's bonus money if they don't have a pre-decided allocation plan -- and how to fix it before the money arrivesWhy paying off a 3% mortgage might be the right call even when the spreadsheet says it isn't -- and the taxes-and-insurance math that makes the house payment conversation more complicated than it looksWhy the Stacking Benjamins guides now have an AI component that only draws from the guide itself -- and why it tells you when it doesn't know somethingWhy This Matters NowEvery time a company makes it easier to spend or trade without thinking, it's not because they want you to make better decisions. Understanding where AI genuinely helps -- thinking, organizing, comparing -- versus where it hurts -- executing, spending, trading -- is one of the most important financial literacy questions of the next decade. From the BasementJoe and Anna dig into Robinhood's new agentic trading and credit card features and work out where the line between useful and dangerous actually sits. OG and Anna follow with the debt sequencer -- a framework for ranking every debt you have and deciding where the next dollar goes, with room for both math and emotion. Doug arrives with kite-flying trivia that connects to one of the most famous names in American history. Anna is back without OG, which Doug predicts will produce the highest ratings in show history.Resources MentionedCNBC -- "Your AI agent can now trade for you on Robinhood and buy stuff with your credit card, too"; linked at stackingbenjamins.comThe College Investor with Robert Farrington -- referenced for prior deep dive on AI financial advice accuracyStacking Benjamins Guides -- college planning, tax planning, and HR benefits guides with new AI component; stackingbenjamins.com/guidesStacking Benjamins Basics Guide -- season one and season two workbooks free at stackingbenjamins.com/basicsguideStacking Benjamins Scorecard -- stackingbenjamins.com/scorecardStacking Benjamins Newsletter (The 201) -- stackingbenjamins.com/201Field Kit Finance -- fieldkitfinance.comStacking Benjamins BAD Groups -- stackingbenjamins.com/badStacking Benjamins Community -- stackingbenjamins.com/basementSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

After facing cancer and surviving a massive “widow maker” heart attack, he began reading the Bible seriously for the first time. As someone trained as a lawyer, Matthew approached Scripture through investigation, evidence, and comparison—reading across multiple Bible translations and Christian traditions. The conversation explores Matthew's path from skepticism to faith, including how books like The Case for Christ and Evidence That Demands a Verdict helped him examine whether Christianity is true. Matthew explains why he believes Christians must be grounded not only in the goodness of Christianity, but in the truth of Christianity.TS and Matthew also discuss Matthew's book, Canon Crossfire, which addresses questions surrounding the Old Testament canon, the differences between Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Ethiopian, and other biblical traditions, and why simplistic answers about the canon can create problems when examined historically.A major theme of the episode is the importance of honest investigation. Matthew encourages believers, students, pastors, and scholars to look carefully at the evidence, especially when discussing disputed books such as 2 Maccabees and the broader historical development of the Bible. In This EpisodeTS and Matthew discuss:Matthew's personal testimony and health crisisHow reading the Bible changed his lifeWhy Christianity's truth claims matterThe role of apologetics in strengthening faithThe historical complexity of the biblical canonDifferences among Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, Ethiopian, and Syriac canonsAthanasius and the early recognition of the New Testament writingsWhy Christians should avoid shallow answers when defending ScriptureMatthew's book Canon CrossfireWhere listeners can find Matthew's workGuest ResourceLearn more about Matthew Mark McWhorter and his book at:CanonCrossfire.comMatthew also mentions that his book is available in multiple formats, including print, ebook, audiobook, large print, and free copies for seminarians.Mentioned in this episode:TUVU - God Centered Concept Academy

She was 12 hours into labor when a nurse walked in carrying a tablet - and a judge appeared on the screen to decide what would happen to her body. This isn't a social media horror story. This happened in Florida, in 2026, to a woman who was not only informed - she was a doula. She had a prior C-section complicated by a dangerous hemorrhage. Refusing another surgery wasn't a whim. Dead trademarks create one of the most misunderstood areas of business law — and in this episode/article, we unpack why reviving an abandoned brand name can either become a brilliant strategic move or a costly legal disaster. Many entrepreneurs believe that once a trademark registration expires, the name instantly becomes available for anyone to use. Unfortunately, trademark law is nowhere near that simple. Businesses may still retain common law rights, consumer recognition, and ongoing commercial protections long after a federal registration becomes inactive. That means companies trying to revive dead trademarks can accidentally walk straight into lawsuits, cease-and-desist letters, forced rebrands, and expensive intellectual property disputes. In this discussion, we break down:What legally qualifies as a dead trademarkHow trademarks become abandonedWhen the USPTO may allow trademark revivalWhy common law trademark rights still matterThe biggest mistakes businesses make during branding searchesHow nostalgic brands are strategically revivedThe hidden risks of resurrecting old company namesWhy due diligence is essential before launching a revived brandWe also explore how nostalgia marketing has fueled renewed interest in abandoned trademarks. Across fashion, entertainment, gaming, food products, and technology, businesses increasingly search for forgotten brands that still hold consumer recognition. The logic is understandable.Building a recognizable brand from scratch is difficult and expensive. Reviving a familiar name may create instant emotional connection and marketplace attention. But nostalgia branding comes with risks. Some abandoned trademarks carry lingering legal claims. Others maintain regional usage that can still create enforceable rights. Some simply come with outdated reputations or historical baggage that modern consumers may rediscover quickly online. And then there's the issue of consumer confusion — one of the core concerns trademark law is designed to prevent. If customers mistakenly believe your revived company is affiliated with the original business, courts may become very interested in your branding strategy very quickly. This episode/article also explains why trademark law differs from many other forms of intellectual property. Trademark rights often depend heavily on actual marketplace use rather than registration alone. That creates complicated situations where “dead” registrations may still carry active legal consequences. For startups, entrepreneurs, marketers, and business owners, understanding these distinctions can prevent massive financial headaches later.Because discovering trademark problems after investing in websites, packaging, advertising, and product launches is significantly more painful than spending time on proper legal research upfront.Whether you're considering reviving an old trademark, evaluating a rebranding opportunity, or simply trying to avoid avoidable business mistakes, this conversation provides practical insights into one of the stranger corners of intellectual property law.It turns out that in business, some brands never fully die. They just wait for someone brave enough to dig them back up.To chat about this one-on-one, grab a free consult at strategymeeting.com

In Part 3 of the three-part series, When It Was Us, Dr. Janet Steinkamp and her daughter Brianna step into the sacred, complicated territory so many families long to understand: what actually happens when an estranged adult child comes back. Not the Hollywood version. Not the social-media version. The real one.The email that didn't mention their relationship at all. The first face-to-face meeting where ground rules were set, voices were raised, and a single sentence about money decided whether reconciliation would happen.Brianna and Janet walk listeners through the two years Bri was silent, what finally cracked the silence, and the slow, specific, deeply imperfect work of rebuilding a relationship that neither of them thought would exist again.Bri starts by answering the question Janet hears most from estranged parents: " Why didn't you respond to all of our messages in the beginning?” From there, she and Janet trace exactly what worked, the handwritten amends letter, the "dishwasher repair person" email about grandpa, the cookie no one was supposed to be looking for, and what didn't. They talk openly about the role of a partner who functioned as a gatekeeper, the moment Janet realized she wasn't just writing a letter to her daughter, and the boundary about money that Janet and her husband flew to Minneapolis to deliver out loud. This is the episode parents in the silence right now have been waiting for. It is also the episode that adult children, choosing distance and silence, need to hear. For many, reconciliation is possible. It is harder, slower, and stranger than people expect. And as Bri puts it: Sometimes reconnection begins when there is finally nothing left to protect and nothing left to lose.IN THIS EPISODEWhy Bri didn't answer the early-on texts, emails, and videos The handwritten amends letter that took Janet months to write, and the one realization that changed how she wrote itThe partner as gatekeeper: why does it matterThe "dishwasher repair person" email that made it safe to finally respond"Money is a good, simple way to motivate certain people in my life at the time", the line that opens a wider conversation about coercive financial dynamicsWhat Bri did during the two and a half years of silence — therapy, internal work, and the moment she realized she no longer needed her mother' approval to come backThe cookie no one was supposed to be looking for and why Janet doing the work for herself mattered more than doing it for BriCONNECT Connect directly to schedule coaching with Dr. Steinkamp by emailing Janet@jesteinkamp.com OFFICE HOURSPlease join Dr. Steinkamp and Bri during Office Hours for a live interactive web session. I really didn't have any thought you were going to respond to it." — Dr. Janet Steinkamp"Once I understood you had a gatekeeper in your life - and a lot of people do - it was much easier for me to understand how to approach that letter and our relationship. I knew I was not just writing to you." — Dr. Janet Steinkamp"I wanted you to change for you. I didn't want you to do it for me. I didn't want the weight of you doing this for me because I don't want to feel like I owe you." — Bri"There's no way we would have gotten to this kind of relationship without completely breaking. In that sense, I'm very thankful for the process." — Bri"I don't have to be the parent anymore. I'm not the etiquette police." — Dr. Janet Steinkamp"Give your child some grace. It's really scary to even consider reconnecting. Take a risk and let your kid have their moment. Put your ego away for a second." — Bri"Just go full send. Get it all out there. Don't hold back. You have nothing left to lose. Rip the bandaid off and see if it works out. And if it does, then it's going to be a stronger relationship than probably any other in your life." — BriHi Listeners. What happens when one of the biggest voices in sports radio loses everything? In this powerful episode of I'm an Artist, Not a Salesman, host Luis Guzman sits down with legendary broadcaster Craig Carton for one of the most honest and personal conversations of his career. From dominating New York sports radio on WFAN to serving time in federal prison, Craig opens up about the rise, the collapse, the addiction that nearly destroyed him, and the long road back toward healing, accountability, and purpose. This isn't a surface-level interview about headlines or tabloid moments. This is a raw conversation about ego, trauma, gambling addiction, fatherhood, fame, and what happens when your entire identity gets ripped away from you. Craig speaks openly about the unresolved childhood trauma he carried for decades, how gambling became both an escape and an obsession, and why getting caught may have ultimately saved his life.Luis guides the conversation in a way that lets listeners hear the human being behind the radio persona. You'll hear Craig discuss the pressure of becoming famous, chasing bigger opportunities, and feeding an ego that was spiraling out of control while publicly appearing successful. He also reflects on the darkest moments of his life, including the morning FBI agents arrested him and the emotional reality of entering federal prison for the first time. One of the strongest themes throughout this episode is redemption. Craig doesn't dodge responsibility or try to rewrite history. He owns every mistake while also sharing how recovery, therapy, family, and spirituality helped him reconnect with the person he believes he always was before addiction took over. His honesty about compulsive gambling and self-destruction makes this one of the most vulnerable episodes the podcast has featured to date. The conversation also dives into Craig's time in prison and how it completely changed the way he judges people. Some of the men he met behind bars became people he deeply respected, forcing him to rethink the labels society puts on individuals based only on their worst decisions. There's also humor mixed throughout the episode, from stories about gambling on ridiculous overseas events to prison food lines and Craig's hilarious “no waiting in line for food” rule after incarceration.Listeners will also hear Craig talk about:His battle with gambling addiction and compulsive behaviorWhy fame became another addictionThe emotional impact prison had on his familyMissing important milestones in his children's livesRecovery, accountability, and rebuilding trustHis return to sports radio and life after prisonLessons learned from therapy and unresolved traumaHow friendship and support helped save his lifeWhy second chances matterThe chemistry between Luis and Craig gives this episode a natural flow that feels more like two people having a real conversation than a traditional interview. There are moments that are emotional, moments that are reflective, and moments that are genuinely funny. That balance makes the episode relatable whether you're a sports fan, entrepreneur, creative, recovering addict, or someone simply trying to figure life out after making mistakes. For fans of long-form podcast conversations, sports media, mental health discussions, addiction recovery stories, and personal growth interviews, this episode delivers a rare level of honesty that's hard to fake. Craig Carton shows listeners that redemption is not about pretending the past never happened. It's about learning from it, owning it, and finding a way to move forward without hiding from the truth. If this episode connected with you, make sure to subscribe to I'm an Artist, Not a Salesman on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube for more conversations with entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, creators, and personalities who share the real stories behind their success, failures, and life experiences.
