In this episode of Crime Time, Inc., the hosts discuss the third of four Reith lectures by forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Gwynne Adshead, focusing on the relationship between trauma and violence. Recorded live at Grendon Prison, a unique therapeutic facility in Buckinghamshire that houses around 200 male prisoners, many serving life sentences for serious crimes, the lecture examines whether trauma leads to violence. Dr. Adshead explores various themes including the Menendez brothers' case, the ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) study, and the biological and psychological impacts of chronic stress. She delves into how early trauma affects brain development and discusses the concept of epigenetics—how trauma can alter gene expression. The podcast also highlights a Q&A session with the prisoners at Grendon, revealing their personal insights and reflections on trauma and behavior. Dr. Adshead emphasizes the importance of protective factors like strong social connections and community support in mitigating the effects of trauma. Additionally, the discussion touches on gender roles and societal expectations in the context of violent behavior. The episode provides a comprehensive look at the complex interplay between trauma and violence, advocating for empathy and rehabilitation over mere punishment.00:00 Introduction to Dr. Gwynne Adshead's Lecture00:23 Grendon Prison: A Unique Setting00:56 The Menendez Brothers Case02:08 The ACE Study and Its Findings03:40 Biological Impacts of Trauma05:14 Psychological Impacts and Mentalizing07:59 Gender Roles and Violence09:08 Q&A Session with Grendon Prisoners10:06 Introduction to Grendon Prison10:16 Unique Approach to Rehabilitation11:00 Challenges and Attrition Rates11:22 Prisoners' Questions and Insights11:51 Impact of Domestic Violence13:17 Gender Differences in Coping15:12 Therapeutic Approaches at Grendon15:40 The Role of Human Connection16:22 Resource Constraints and Future of Prisons17:18 Rehabilitation and Transition18:19 Final Thoughts on Criminal Justice19:41 Conclusion and Call to Action Hosted on Acast. On today's episode is former armed robber and war-zone photographer Tam Carrigan. Crime was normalised from a young age for Tam, with childhood memories of visiting his father in prison and it being a common occurrence in the area he grew up in. Things gradually got more serious as he got older, graduating from car theft to armed robberies.  Despite this, from a young age Tam was looking for a way to escape all of this, even trying to join the British army and later spending a year with the French Foreign Legion. He also spent a number of years abroad in the Middle East, and had dreams of leaving a life of crime to become a photographer in various war-zone areas there.  However, the lure of crime and the need to earn a living eventually led Tam astray again, and he would end up being sentenced to a long stint in prison for his part in a large-scale bank robbery in Torquay in the south of England.  It was in prison where Tam finally decided to turn his life around for good, opting to go to Grendon which is a therapeutic prison focussing more on reforming criminals rather than simply punishment. Since leaving prison Tam has become involved in a number of incredible projects both in the UK and in the Middle East, helping to create safe spaces which allow disadvantaged children to play and enjoy themselves.  It truly is an inspirational story of change that just goes to show, no matter how far you think you've gone, there is always a way back. Terry Ellis could so easily have written a book about being an armed robber and spending many years in prison. Even if he wrote the more conventional “gangster” style autobiography, it would have made a fascinating read. But he didn't and this is just one of the reasons why I found him such a compelling person to listen to. The book that he chose to write is incredible. It's about his time at Grendon (a therapeutic prison) alongside prisoners who have committed the most extreme crimes imaginable. Anyone who has ever wondered if it's possible for someone to change should read his book and listen to this podcast. The podcast is in three parts. In the first of these, we talk about Terry's upbringing and how he climbed through the ranks of the criminal underworld. He explains his “warped sense of self worth”, why you have to be an idiot to do robberies and how his first attempt at rehabilitation failed. Restorative Justice schemes are increasingly playing a role within the Criminal Justice System. They are designed to confront the criminal with the consequences of his or her actions. Sometimes they involve a meeting between the victim and the offenders, where victims can give their perspective on what has happened and offenders can seek forgiveness. Many religious groups believe that Restorative Justice principles resonate with their traditions. Joining Ernie to discuss Restorative Justice are Pavan Dhilowal, Head of Public Affairs at the British Humanist Society and former policy head at a think tank specialising in criminal justice; Khola Hassan, Media Representative at the Islamic Sharia Council; and Tim Newell former Governor of Grendon, a therapeutic prison.

Claudia Hammond visits HMP Grendon, the only prison in Europe which operates wholly as a therapeutic community. More than nine out of ten prisoners at Grendon are serving indeterminate sentences for murder or serious violent offences. Inmates have to apply for a place and once approved undergo intensive group therapy three times a week for well over a year. Claudia talks to inmates, therapists and prison staff to find out how the prison operates and how its unique environment aims to reduce reoffending rates.
