Welcome back, Part of Us tribe. This week we're exploring a pivotal moment in En Vogue's career with their 2004 album 'Soulflower.' Looking into the background, we discuss the transformations the group went through, including lineup changes and shifts in musical direction amidst the evolving R&B landscape of the early 2000s. With Cindy and Terry taking on executive producer roles, 'Soulflower' marks a significant shift towards a more mature, neo-soul sound, reflecting both the industry's changes and the group's own evolution. Did we like this change in direction? Listen to find out. We also dissect the album track by track, examining how En Vogue blended neo-soul influences with their signature style. From the opener "Losin' My Mind" to "Stop" to the cover of "I Do Love You (Piece of My Love)," and "New Day Calling" each song on the album offers a unique perspective on love, life, and resilience. We also address listener feedback, discussing the absence of Maxine and Dawn and speculating on how their presence might have shaped the album's dynamics. “I just met the second coming of Michael Jackson,” says Frank Gatson, famed choreographer and Dance Dad to the stars, of meeting Beyonce for the first time in 1997 when she was just 15 years old. And Frank would know—his first major job was working with MJ on the 30-day shoot for Jackson's iconic “Smooth Criminal” video. Since then, he's worked with acts such as En Vogue, Usher, Toni Braxton, Brandy, Tyrese, Rihanna, not to mention a young John Corella. For his work, he remains the most nominated choreographer in the history of MTV. He began his career dancing in the long-running “Up With People” tour, staying with local families in each country in which they performed. Navigating language and cultural barriers helped him to hone his people skills as well as a keen intuition which has allowed him to share—and elevate—his artists' visions on an almost psychic level. With each performance, Frank insists, dancers are making history. After all, dancing and music can bring people together like nothing else. This requires that he be unabashedly honest with his artists, even when no one else will be. That honesty has gotten him in trouble, but superstars with the same drive and ambition know he just wants to get it right. And when it's right, he says, it's magical. With the same honesty, he critiques the current state of dance, what this generation is lacking and what needs to change. He reflects on his memories of a segregated American South, racism and homophobia in the dance industry. With a long and illustrious career, which shows no sign of slowing down any time soon, Frank's passion for and fascination with dance remains as fierce as ever. He has big plans—hear the musical he wants to resurrect, what American dancers can learn from K-Pop groups, and the five current pop stars he would like to form into a supergroup. When we share our light, he says, we sparkle brighter. Quotes “Some people might think my gift is to dance or to do what I've done all my life, but I think my gift is to see.” (5:52 | Frank Gatson) “I think musicians, dancers and singers can change the world. It's the one thing that all people love.” (10:10 | Frank Gatson) “You can feel racism, you can feel it when you walk into a room. Especially with my keen people skills. Sometimes, I'll go to a hotel and the elevator door will open. If I see a woman grab her purse, I don't get on the elevator. I don't want to give her that.” (22:20 | Frank Gatson) “It was like the little girl came out. Just imagine, I met Beyonce in ‘97. She was 15 years old, and when she shot up from the air in the Soldier's Field stadium, and said, ‘Is that Frank?!' I could immediately hear her like a little girl, and I looked up, and I started cheesing like a little clown. I was just so impressed that she saw me in the midst of all those people down there.” (26:21 | Frank Gatson) “Beyonce has told me, ‘Frank, your passion is going to get you in trouble.' And it does. A lot of people don't hire me because they think I'm trouble. I'm not trouble, I know I'm not trouble. I just want the greatest. I want history to be made. They just don't get me. Everybody who's worked with me gets me. If they've heard about me, they don't get me.” (27:26 | Frank Gatson) “I have a saying: ‘Share the light; sparkle brighter.” (41:55 | Frank Gatson) “Life is too special to let someone else predict what you need to say. You need to be gracious, you need to be nice, but be honest about this thing called ‘show business.' That's why there's so much mediocrity? What has blown your mind lately about show business? Think about it like that. It's because people are not really in it like they should be in it. They're sugar coating it.” (48:48 | Frank Gatson) “The reason that I was asked to work with Destiny's Child was because they saw my work with En Vogue. And Beyonce, I equipped her with all four En Vogue girls. The classiness of Terry Ellis, the pageantry of Cindy Herron, the soulfulness and spicy part of Dawn Robinson, the soulful, soulful, driven Maxine Jones. Beyonce's all four of those girls in one.” (52:35 | Frank Gatson) “I was in an agent's office and I saw Paula Abdul's number on the desk and I memorized it. I went home and called Paula and said, ‘I'm coming to your audition today, my name is Frank Gatson.' She was pretty mad, but she hired me.” (1:10:53 | Frank Gatson) Links Dance Dance Dad with John Corella on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dancedadwithjohncorella/ John on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/john_corella/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

The park shows its different personalities during each season. Spring brings occasional flooding from the Tickfaw River that nourishes native plants and provides breeding grounds for its wildlife. Nicolas-Ignace de Beaubois (October 15, 1689 – January 13, 1770) was a French Jesuit priest and missionary who joined the Canadian mission in Quebec in 1719. Beaubois spent a training period in Quebec and began his spreading of religious doctrine among the Illinois Indians in 1721. On 2 Feb. 1723, at Kaskaskia, Illinois he took the vows of a Jesuit. Because of the expansion of the Mississippi valley missions, the Jesuits had made the area a distinct mission district within the diocese of Quebec and Beaubois became the superior. He immediately went to France to populate and strengthen the new jurisdiction. The Compagnie des Indes was responsible for funding the parishes and missions in the Missio Ludovisiana district and he was successful in negotiating appropriate funding for future operations. He obtained authorization for the Jesuits to open a house in New Orleans and to have a plantation near the city for supplementing their operation. Beaubois also arranged to have Ursuline nuns funded to establish a girls' school in New Orleans. This became the first girls' school in the Mississippi valley. This week in Louisiana. Observe wildlife of fish from the pier over the Vermilion River at Palmetto Island State Park. Palmetto Island State Park's very name hints at the untamed wildness you can expect in this southern corner of the state. Palmettos, those shaggy, tropical trees found all over the swamps, grow alongside tall cypress and other Louisiana native plants, giving the park an air of authenticity — this is as unspoiled as south Louisiana gets. The Vermilion River runs through the Palmetto Island State Park. The most scenic way of reaching the river is via a boat launch near the center of the park, which also offers canoeists and kayakers easy access to narrow channels and tucked-away lagoons. Canoes are available for rent by the hour or day. Though the waterways here are the main attraction, the .7-mile-long Cypress Trail also allows visitors a close-up look at Palmetto Island State Park's jungle-like ecology. At the nearby visitor center, you'll find a water playground and bathhouse, and six cabins that give overnight guests a front-row seat to the symphony of native animal calls emerging from the swamps. Outside of Palmetto Island State Park you'll find even more opportunities to dive into Cajun culture. B. Cox briefly looks back at En Vogue's second album 1992's Funky Divas. On the heels of their successful debut 1990s' Born To Sing, the Oakland based R&B quartet (Dawn Robinson, Maxine Jones, Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron) came out blazing with their 2nd album which eclipsed their debut. Teaming up once again with producers and songwriters Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, the group scored a commercial hit with the album, placing scoring two Billboard R&B and Soul #1 hits in "Never Gonna Get It" and "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" and selling 3.5 million copies in the U.S.Upon its release in 1992, the album recieved mixed reviews from the critics, but since then, it has garnered more widespread acclaim and praises for its vocal excellence and production depth. It is the group's best selling album to date.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comLearn More About the "Podcast GPS" BootCamp Course!www.vaultclassicpod.com/podcastgpsSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAlbumism: Never Gonna Get It: Celebrating 30 Years of En Vogue's "Funky Divas" | Anniversary Retrospectivehttps://albumism.com/features/tribute-celebrating-30-years-of-en-vogue-funky-divasThis is Dig: En Vogue Celebrates 30 Years of Funky Divashttps://www.thisisdig.com/en-vogue-celebrate-30-years-of-funky-divas/Audacy: Run That Back: En Vogue's "Funky Divas" Turns 30https://www.audacy.com/music/hip-hop-r-b/run-that-back-en-vogues-funky-divas-turns-30Music Musings and Such: Free Your Mind: En Vogue's Funky Diva's at Thirtyhttps://www.musicmusingsandsuch.com/musicmusingsandsuch/2022/2/9/feature-free-you-mind-en-vogues-funky-divas-at-thirtySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
My guest today is Nicquel Terry Ellis. Nicquel is the senior writer for CNN's Race and Equality team. Before that, she was a national correspondent for USA Today covering race inequality and activism. She has also spent six years working in local news with the Detroit News and the Asbury Park Press.I often receive the criticism that I only talk to people like John McWhorter, Sam Harris and Glenn Lowry, who agree with me about the problem of wokeness and the moral panic around racism and white supremacy. However, the people making that charge only see the tip of the iceberg. They don't see the dozens of requests and emails I send to prominent people on the other side of this issue to come on my show, all of which get rejected. Ibram Kendi is the only such attempt that I've made public. Nicquel is really the first mainstream media person, in a long time, that disagrees with me on the race issue but is willing to talk about it. So I'm grateful to her for that. Unfortunately, I did not have that much time with Nicquel but in the future, I hope to go deeper into all of these subjects with people who disagree with me.In this episode, Nicquel and I talk about the biases of the mainstream media, on the topic of race. We talk about racial disparities and the use of force by the police. We also talk about George Floyd, Tony Timpa and Ma'Khia Bryant. Towards the end of the podcast, we go on to discuss whether Black America as a whole is making progress or sliding backwards, and much more. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.
