Pennyworth Season 3 Episode 1 “Well To Do” Synopsis Episode Written by: Bruno Heller Episode Directed By: Rob Bailey Five years after the English Civil War put an end to The Raven Union, Alfie, Dave Boy and Bet Sykes are busy rounding up People With Enhancements (PDubz) and delivering them to the government through Martha Wayne and Lucious Fox. Meanwhile, Thomas and Martha are surprised when they are visited by Patrick Wayne, Thomas' estranged father, who is in town on business to find a missing asset, Dr Glub who recently evaded and killed his CIA handler. He is accompanied by a lady called Virginia Devereaux who is mandated to do whatever is needed. Alfie and Dave Boy have a new job to track down a missing socialite Jessica Thistle and return her to her parents. It's a good paying gig but Bet is distracted trying to find former Raven leader John Salt. She finds two former Ravens and after killing them both she's left with a concrete lead on John Salt and a baby. The lads track Jessica to the commune of Sister Suzie and take the drugged up girl back home. But after one night at home Jessica murders her parents and turns up on Alfie's doorstep covered in blood Pennyworth Season 3 Episode 2 “Many Clouds” Synopsis Episode Written by: John Stephens Episode Directed By: Rob Bailey The mystery of the Thistle's death continues at the highest level of government, as Prime Minister Aziz takes an active interest in the case when connections are made to the CIA activity in England by Martha and Lucius Fox. Alfie and Dave Boy move Jessica into hiding, after an attempted kidnap from the hospital where she was being held. They move her to a “safehouse” owned by Sandra, Alfie's former love interest, and currently number 3 in the music charts. As Martha's job takes her to the commune of Sister Suzie, she learns that a new psychotropic drug developed by Doctor Glub was trialed on the members of the commune. Before she can garner more information the CIA barge in killing Sister Suzie and almost taking out Martha before Alfie and Dave Boy show up in the nick of time to dispatch the secret servicemen. We've come to the end of our analysis of the Dark Knight Trilogy with The Dark Knight Rises. Can this one live up to the awesomeness that the previous two movies were? Where does this movie work and where does it not? Let's dig in and talk about how this trilogy ends. ----more---- Transcript Welcome to Nerd Heaven. I'm Adam David Collings, the author of Jewel of The Stars. And I am a nerd.   This is episode 94 of the podcast.   Today we're talking about the movie The Dark Knight Rises.   The description on IMDB reads Eight years after the Joker's reign of anarchy, Batman, with the help of the enigmatic Catwoman, is forced from his exile to save Gotham City from the brutal guerrilla terrorist Bane.   The screenplay was written by Jonathan Nolan and Christpher Nolan The story was by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. It was directed by Christopher Nolan And it first released on the 16th of July 2012.   Once again, I hired this on DVD when it came out, and only saw it once. But I own the complete trilogy on Blu-ray now.   The movie starts with Commissioner Gordon praising Harvey Dent at his funeral. Doing just what Batman told him to do. As hard as that is for him.    That ties us into the end of the previous movie. Then we're straight to the new plot.   It's a hostage situation. Bane is introduced as a mercenary. A masked man. It's a terrifying interrogation, the way they're threatening these people, but not actually killing them.   He wants to know, who is Bane? This guy is looking for him.   It turns out one of them IS Bane. Now my first introduction to Bane was the game Batman Arkham Asylum. In that game, he's this big monstrous creature powered by the venom serum. Basically DC's answer to the Hulk.   When I heard Bane was going to be the primary villain of this movie I was surprised. How can a big mutated monster fit in with this serious realistic Batman?  I was surprised to see when he appeared, that he was just some bloke, but he's got this weird metal mask around his mouth.   No explanation is given for this odd facial decoration when he's introduced. But he does say that nobody cared about him until he put on the mask. And I have to say, his voice doesn't at all match what I would expect to hear coming out of someone who looks like this.   He's got this happy-go-lucky English accent. Sounds like it could be quite high-pitched but it's distorted by the mask.   Without any explanation, this mask is just really distracting and odd.   Bane crashes the plane. He's stealing blood from one of their bodies. This is all a pretty impressive sequence to look at, but it's very disorienting. Who are all these people? What do they mean to each other?  None of it is clear.   Bane Leaves one of his own behind, so a body can be found in the wreckage. And the guy doesn't even object. What hold does he have over them they'd so readily die for him? Spoiler alert - we'll never find out.   Even after seeing the whole movie, looking back it still wasn't entirely clear what this scene was all about? They abduct Doctor Pavel and fake his death. That'll be important later. But what's with the blood?   Back in Gotham, we learn about Harvey Dent day. A new public holiday.  The city has undergone a historic turnaround. Gotham is without organised crime. For the first time in forever. A real difference has been made. It's nice to know that Bruce was right. Gotham has been rehabilitated. He's proven Ra's Al Ghul wrong.   There's some talking about repealing the dent act, which gave police the power to act, but no real details on what they meant. And some talking about how Batman murdered Dent.   Gordon hates playing along with all of this. But what can he do? When he says he has a speech, telling the truth about Dent, but now is not the time, I think he means the real truth. Maybe one day he can tell the real truth and clear Batman's name. But not today. The peace is too fragile. Too new.   Things are not going well for Gordon. His wife and kids left him. The mayor wants to get rid of him. He was a war hero, but this is peacetime. I feel really sorry for him. The last movie destroyed his marriage. Between faking his own death - letting his wife think he'd died, and their son nearly dying, I can see how it ended. It really sucks.   So we're seeing a very different world than that of the first two movies. But let's not assume it's all gonna stay happy and nice. There'd be no movie then.   Batman might be on the run, but Bruce Wayne isn't. He doesn't have to be. Nobody knows Bruce is Batman. But Bruce is living as a recluse. His new beard speaks volumes. He needs a cane to walk. It's not entirely clear why this is. But he's not faking this. He really does have trouble walking.   The maid is stealing his mother's pearls.   And the maid is, of course, not a maid, but a cat burglar. Selina Kyle. And here's yet another example of Hollywood star casting  I would never have thought of, but I like Anne Hathaway in this role. She does a decent job of it. I think at this point, she was still stepping out of the shadow cast by The Princess Diaries. Although she had already played Agent 99 in the remake of Get Smart, which I found surprisingly good.   Wayne Manor has been rebuilt. Bruce can now operate back in the original bat cave. But it's a lot more developed.    Selina likes the pearls. She won't sell them, but what she wanted was Bruce's fingerprints.    Alfred is worried about Bruce. He hung up the cape but he never began a new life. He's not living. He's just waiting. But he's still grieving the loss of Rachel.   Alfred tells his cafe story, which is important and will be paid off wonderfully later on. When Bruce was away, travelling the world, learning how to fight criminals, Alfred hoped he'd never come back. Why? Because he wanted Bruce to find his happy ending, and live a life free of the wounds of his childhood. Alfred would go on holiday to Florence every year. He'd go to a particular cafe. Every time he'd fantasise that he'd look across and see Bruce with a wife, maybe a couple of kids. Neither would speak to each other, but they'd both know that he'd made it. That he was happy. He never wanted Bruce to come back to Gotham. There was nothing here for him but pain and tragedy. Alfred wanted something more for him than that. And he still does.   Next, we meet an idealistic young cop named Blake. He'll be a pretty important character in this movie, but it won't be clear why for some time. He's played by Joseph Gordon Levitt, who is most famous for the teenage-bodied alien in the sci-fi sitcom Third Rock from the sun. But he really sells his performance as an adult cop in a serious drama.   Selina meets a guy named Stryver.  Selina got the prints for THIS guy. Stryver is gonna kill Selina, but she's well prepared. In a lot of ways, like Batman. She puts on a good act to appear an innocent bystander to cops.   But Blake is on the case.   Thugs capture Gordon and bring him to Bane. There is a connection between Bane and Stryver.   Blake comes to see Bruce. In relation to Harvey's murder. But starts telling him the story of Bane.  He needs Batman's help. Does Blake know Bruce is Batman? Blake tells the story of his own tragic childhood. He's an orphan too. Bruce Wayne Billionaire orphan was a hero to those kids.   It was never really clear to me how or when Blake discovered that Bruce is Batman, but it also seems pretty clear that at this point, he DOES know. And he believes Batman was innocent of Harvey's crimes.   I guess Bruce's injuries are from his time as Batman. That would seem logical. But Batman didn't seem this banged up at the end of Dark Knight.   Bruce meets with Gordon in a ski mask as Batman. Gordon says Batman needs to return. He is still needed. Bruce is not convinced Batman exists anymore.   Bruce finds Selina at a charity party. This is a masquerade and Selina has chosen a black mask and cat ears. This is the closest to a cat costume we'll get to see her in. It's a realistic take that works in the context of this trilogy. Although she'll kinda continue to wear it again later in the movie for some reason, which doesn't seem to fit. Honestly, I'd probably have been okay if this was the only scene where we saw her wear it.   This party is also where we meet Miranda Tate, a bright young woman who has business dealings with Bruce, and is very interested in his clean energy reactor, which he's never put into production.   Selina ended up a thief because she did what she had to. But once you start there,  they'll never let you do what you want to. You get stuck in a life of crime. Does that excuse her actions? It certainly gives us a little more sympathy for her as a character. I suspect this is a common story in the real world. Nobody grows up thinking “I really wanna be a criminal”. She says “There's no fresh start in today's world.” And it's starting to look like a fresh start might just be something she'd be interested in, if it were possible.   In the meantime, she sees herself as a robin hood figure   Selina threatens a coming storm that may bring down the rich in Gotham. And then she steals Bruce's sports car.   Wayne Enterprises not doing well financially. Bruce put all his money into the clean energy project, but won't turn it on for some reason. But you can bet he does have a reason. Miranda supports the project and doesn't understand why he won't follow through.   Lucious has some gadgets to show Bruce, even though he says he's retired. It's some kind of aircraft. Bruce is using a device to help him walk and even kick.   We learn a little about Bane. There's a prison pit where prisoners are sent to suffer and die,  in another part of the world. Bane came from that prison. He was born and raised in hell on earth. He was trained by Ra's al Ghul. But excommunicated from the league of shadows. Apparently he was too extreme for Ra's. And that's gotta be a bad thing.   Alfred thinks Gotham needs Bruce, not Batman. He's not afraid Batman will fail. He's afraid that he WANTS to fail. He's a shadow of who he was. Physically and mentally.   So Bayne and his goons break into the stock exchange. There's no cash here. So what's his plan? It's an online theft. They don't stay long. And they leave with hostages   Bruce wears the batman suit for the first time in ages. He arrives on the bike that was once part of the tumbler.   This is more dangerous for him than ever because the police think he is a murderer. They won't hesitate to take him down.   This proves to be a real problem - because the cops are more interested in catching Batman than they are dealing with Bane and Co. Good for Bane.   Putting aside the question of whether the bike was originally part of the bridging vehicle, it continues to do some pretty cool stuff in this movie. The way the wheels rotate and allow quick direction changes is a lot of fun to watch.   But then all reality goes out the window when we see this movie's version of the batwing, which is basically a full-on spaceship. I mean, I like it, but it doesn't fit this series very well. And they don't even try to explain it. The batmobile was introduced in a way that made sense in this world, in Batman Begins. No attempt was made to do likewise with the Batwing in this movie. I found that pretty disappointing.   Selina is after a program that will clear her name. A clean slate. It erases your identity from every database on earth. It literally makes you disappear. So her desire to escape her life of crime and have a fresh start is quite genuine. But the guy claims it doesn't exist.   Batman rescues Selina from Bane's people.   Selina sold Bruce's fingerprints to Daggart, who Stryver works for, for that program. She hasn't been paid, so you can imagine how she's feeling.   Alfred is really not keen on Bruce trying to be Batman again. He's gonna get himself killed. He used to want a life beyond Batman, but with Rachael's death, that's not possible. He can't move on. And that's when Alfred decides to finally tell Bruce about Rachael's letter. It's a very powerful character scene. And this choice hurts both of them very deeply. Alfred has just sacrificed his relationship with Bruce in an attempt to keep Bruce alive. A painful representation of what love is all about. Brilliant scene. Sadly, that means we won't see any more of Alfred until near the end of the movie.   Now we find out what Bane and Daggart were up to. They've effectively bankrupted Bruce and acquired Wayne Industries. Bruce's main concern is applied sciences, but Lucious has done a good job of keeping that off the books and safe. As he should have.   But they do have his energy project.   Bruce shows the reactor to Miranda. The reason he never put the reactor into active use is because some Russians found a way to weaponise similar technology. In particular, Doctor Pavel from the plane at the beginning. The risk was too great for Bruce.   He's putting Miranda in charge of the company, in charge of the reactor. “Keep it safe and hidden. If it becomes too dangerous, she's to flood it.” Bruce has been officially kicked out of his own company. His father's legacy.   Bane kills Daggett and takes over, calling himself a necessary evil. That's kind of how the League of Shadows see themselves, right?   Bruce wants to recruit Selina to help find Bane. He offers her the fresh start. Claims it does exist. Bruce acquired it to keep it out of the wrong hands. He may be willing to let Selina use it, but he needs to trust her first. When he tells her that they're letting him keep the house, Selina makes a very interesting point. “You don't even go broke like the rest of us.” And that's very interesting. When super rich people go broke, they tend to still have resources behind them. A former billionaire is not going to find himself living on the street begging for food, like a normal person might when they lose everything. It's all relative. And I find that fascinating.   It reminds me of Alastair in the British comedy show As Time Goes By. When he said he was broke, what he really meant was he was down to his last million.   Bruce and Miranda get intimate. That seems to have come out of nowhere.   It turns out Batman couldn't trust Selina. She's done a deal with Bane, delivering Batman to him. Bane knows who Batman is as well. Selina overhears so she knows too   Now in some ways, Bane is a very similar character to Doomsday.  Doomsday is good for one thing. Killing Superman. So if you're gonna put Doomsday in your movie, you'd better be willing to have him Kill Superman.   In a similar way, Bane is famous for breaking Batman's back. That's his purpose. It doesn't mean you can't do other things with the character, of course, but Bane's inclusion is something of a promise.   I'm not as familiar with this incident from the comics as I'd like to be. I am in the process of binging the important Batman comics from the 80s and 90s, but I'm not up to Knightfall yet. Looking forward to it, though. Bane says something I find fascinating. “Peace has cost you strength. Victory has defeated you.” By winning peace in this city, Batman has not kept up his training. His physical conditioning. That has made him weak. His great victory has become his defeat.   Bane claims to BE the league of shadows. Fulfilling Ra's Al Ghul's destiny.   “You merely adopted the dark, '' he says. “I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the sun until I was a man.”   Bane has found applied sciences. He has all of batman's tech And then he does it.  He brake's Batman's back.  In a shot that looks very reminiscent of the comic.   I think Selina is already realising that she made a mistake. She's on the run, not from the police, but from bane. When Blake says he can offer her protection, she just gives him this look, and Blake kinda shrugs, as if to say, okay, maybe we can't protect you from someone like that.   Selina honestly tells him she's not sure if Bruce is dead or alive.   He is alive, but barely. Bruce doesn't fear death - he longs for it. Bane has taken Bruce to the prison where he grew up. Underground and dark. The tunnel is open. You can see the sky. But climbing is impossible. That impossible hope is what tortures people's minds.   Bruce has to watch on a TV screen as Bane destroys Gotham.   Bane seems to be the only one to ever have escaped from this hole. He was born in there, and he escaped as a child.   And he's found the reactor. The board are coerced into turning it on for him.   Bane's first move is to detonate explosives he's buried in concrete all over the city. The visuals of the football field slowly collapsing looked amazing.   There are some similarities between Bane's plan and Ra's al Ghul's. Isolate the island in the middle of Gotham and then use some advanced technology to destroy people.   Most of the city's cops are in the tunnels under the city. Except for Blake.   At this point, most first-time viewers are probably surprised by how big a role Blake has in this movie, and wondering why he's in here.   It seems Doctor Pavel is the only person in the world capable of disarming the reactor bomb. After confirming this, Bane murders Pavel in front of the entire stadium.   Now we see a little of The Joker's theatricality come into play. This is going to be a game. One of the people in the crowd has the detonator.  It's not clear at this point, whether this is somebody working for Bane, or if the person doesn't actually know they're the one. Perhaps something innocuous they'll do will set off the bomb. This could have been explained better.   I feel like the writing in this movie isn't up to the same level as the previous two. Ra's al Ghul had a clear goal and motive. The Joker was completely insane, but even he had a clear motive and goal - as crazy as it was. But I can't get a reading on Bane. He says he's giving Gotham back to the people. What exactly does that mean? Gotham is finally at peace, better than it's been in decades. What does he think he's liberating them from? But does he actually care? Of course not. He sees himself as carrying the torch of the League of Shadows. He wants to destroy Gotham. But why? Batman has succeeded in proving that Al Ghul's extreme measures were not necessary. Gotham has been rehabilitated. So ….. What's it all about?   Interesting to see a bunch of tumblers, in their original cammo colours driving through the city streets.   Bane tells the city the truth about Harvey Dent, reading from the stolen speech Gordon planned to one day deliver. He's raging against the corruption of the Gotham police. Now in fairness, much of their current peace has been built on a lie. But the criminals locked in that prison are still criminals. Justice HAS been served. So what is to be gained by letting chaos reign and releasing all those dangerous criminals back out into the street? Maybe Bane wants to watch the city tear itself apart, but he can just set off the bomb.   It seems to me that Bane is his own brand of crazy, but a much less interesting version of crazy than we saw last time with The Joker.   The people of the city seem to be taking up Bane's cause and rioting. I find that extraordinary.  So Blake points out some of the criminals have been denied parole due to the Dent Act. Well….that's a potential moral issue. But it's not a well-defined one. We just don't have enough information to make a fully informed opinion. The justice system is supposed to punish the guilty, but also preserve certain rights and freedoms that they still have as human beings. But this was an act of legislation. It was a law. We don't understand the subtleties and details of that law, but the police had the legal right to keep those criminals locked up, regardless of whether Harvey Dent was a nice bloke or not. Whether what the law allowed them to do was morally right is a completely different question.   And now for the people of Gotham to want to let all those dangerous criminals out to roam the streets, and string up the cops. I'm losing all sympathy for them. The thing is, I'd be quite interested in a story that genuinely looked at the moral issues of a police force doing something a little dubious to protect the city from the special class of criminal we see in Gotham. Get some real interesting shades of grey going on so you have something to discuss. Except I don't think this movie does it at all well. It doesn't delve in and explore any of that. It's all brushed over so briefly that it becomes meaningless and there's nothing to talk about.   We cut back to Bruce and we get a little more backstory about Bane. How he came to be born down there in that pit. I don't know what country this is supposed to be, but you want to talk about corrupt justice systems mistreating the freedoms of its prisoners. This is where you look. Apparently, young Bane was attacked by other prisoners during a plague. One of the prisoners was a doctor. He tried to fix Bane's face, but his fumbling efforts left Bane in perpetual agony, and the mask on his face holds back the pain somehow. Um……..okay.   So they're trying to fix Bruce's back. A broken back doesn't necessarily mean death. My wife suffered a broken vertebra in her back from a roller-skating injury as a teenager. It's something she's lived with all of her life. The muscles learn to adapt. But Bruce is in a pretty bad way. He's got vertebrae sticking out. It's believable that Bruce could get back into physical shape again someday, but it's gonna be a very long and slow recovery.   Bruce hallucinates that Ra's Al Ghul is there with him. He surmises that Ra's was the mercenary whose wife was thrown into the pit. Ra's is Bane's father. This is reasonable speculation, but Ra's isn't really there alive to confirm it. This is all in Bruce's head. So maybe Bruce is right, and maybe Bruce is wrong. But we're expected to believe that it's true - at least that Ra's al Ghul was the mercenary, and the child's mother was his lover. But the only reason Batman, or the audience, knows this, is because Bruce learned it in a dream.   At this point I'm left wondering how long exactly is this siege taking? For Bruce to recover and build himself up to the physical strength to climb out of the pit, realistically, I'd think he'd need a year. He was in much worse shape than my wife, and she lost the better part of a school year to her injury. But it feels like the stuff in Gotham is just taking place over a few hours, or maybe a few days.   Blake actually gives us a number. It's been 3 months. 3 months those cops have been trapped underground. So much about this movie just isn't ringing true. Wouldn't the federal government have done something about this after all that time? An entire city under siege?   Lucious gives us some more bad news. The fuel cell in the reactor is deteriorating over time. In 23 days it'll go off, regardless of whether the trigger man pushes the button. If he could get his hands on the core he could put it back in the reactor and stabilise it.   After a few failed escape attempts, the prison doctor gives Bruce some psychological advice. Not being afraid of death doesn't make you strong. It makes you weak. Fear of death is necessary. It's what makes you go that extra mile and do what should be impossible. Because if you don't you die. So he advises Bruce to do the climb the way the child did. Without the rope. I don't know if this is good advice or not, but in a way it kind of makes sense. Bruce is not fully committing. Because somewhere deep down, he knows if he misses, the rope will save him. Without that safety net, he simply HAS to make the jump. So his body and mind will be more willing to do what is needed. It's all mental. Makes some form of sense. But if he fails - he can't try again. It's a gamble I wouldn't make. But Bruce would.   It's a genuinely triumphant moment when he climbs out to freedom.   We get another cameo from Doctor Crane, also known as the scarecrow. He's trying people in Bane's dodgy court.   When Gordon goes to recruit one of his cops to help, we learn a little more about the situation. The government has apparently done a deal with Bane. The details of which, we don't know. Seems unlikely.   This is a weird setting. It's almost post-apocalyptic. The cop says Gordon doesn't know whether the bomb will go off tomorrow, except … he does. Why doesn't he tell him about the time decay?   So Wayne has arrived and recruited Selina to help him. He still sees something good in her. Is that naive? Maybe. But part of being a literary hero is looking for the good in people. Gordon has been captured by the goons and is being forced out on the ice, even though he would prefer to be shot than play along with the charade.   Bruce lights his symbol in flames on the side of a building, because he knows the power of a symbol to give people hope is an important weapon in this fight. Batman can't save the city alone. That will take good people to stand up.   Blake and Selina are gonna lead people out of the city to safety while Batman leads an army against Bane.   Selina is still ultimately selfish, but she wants Bruce to come with her. There's an inkling of something between them, at least from her side. She makes the point that he doesn't owe these people anything more. He's given them everything. And she may be right. Maybe they don't even deserve him anymore. But true heroism gives what is undeserved. And as he ominously points out, he hasn't given them everything. Not yet.   It really does look like a war. The cops all lined up in their uniforms, facing off against the crowd of Bane's thugs.   A big battle like this is a pretty epic way to finish off the trilogy, I'll grant them that.   So big surprise, Miranda is the child of Ra's al Ghul, not Bane. She's working with him and she has the trigger. Bane was her protector. I'm not sure this really works.  Did she really know about the reactor before Bruce told her? Because Bane seemed to. I dunno.   Also, this calls into question a lot of the backstory we thought we knew about Bane. So…has he actually been in that pit since childhood? Did he grow up there? Was the whole story about the doctor messing up his facial surgery so he needed the mask to keep the pain at bay true or not? We're just left feeling a little bewildered.   Fortunately, Gordon has managed to block the detonator, so it doesn't explode at once. Selina has finally decided to have a change of heart and help Bruce.   Miranda has flooded the reactor so there's no way to prevent the bomb from exploding anymore.   The only thing that can be done now is to fly it away from the city. A suicide mission. Batman is quick to sign up for that with his batwing. Now he really will have given everything.   Gordon wants to know Batman's identity, not because he ever cared, but because people should know who gave his life for them. Bruce subtly tells him who he is by relating an experience from his childhood.   When this movie was soon to come out, I remember saying to a workmate of mine that I suspected Batman would die in the third movie, sacrificing himself for others. My reasoning was that it had been confirmed the series would be a trilogy. This would be the end. And Batman dying just seemed a fitting end that would fit the tone of the series.   So I felt kind of gratified when I saw exactly that play out. Of course, it's not over yet.   It's fitting that Bruce's funeral is attended by Gordon, Lucious, Blake, and Alfred. The people who knew who he was. I'm curious what kind of cover story they came up with for Bruce's death. I don't think Gordon revealed Batman's identity publicly, because when asked about who saved the city, he simply says “The batman.” But with all the death and destruction, it shouldn't be too hard for Gordon and Blake to explain it.   Poor Alfred. He's so heartbroken. He blames himself. He feels he let down Thomas and Martha Wayne.   Blake has thrown in his badge. I think the inability to adapt of the officers that wouldn't let him escape with the kids has hardened him to the rigid structure of the force.   I got pretty emotional at the reading of Bruce's will. He's left everything to Alfred, the man who raised him, who was as much a father to him as Thomas was. And Wayne manor is to be used to care for the city's orphans.   So we learn that Blake's real name is Robin. Bruce has left him information to find the batcave, in case he wants to continue Batman's work.   So that's why Blake's story was so important to this movie. He is…this universe's equivalent of Robin. In the comics, Robin was just a code name given to a number of people. Dick Grayson, Json Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, and Damien Wayne. In this version, Robin was the guy's real name. It's little more than a nod to the concept, but it kinda fits this interpretation.   And that brings us to that last scene. We learn with Lucious that the Batwing's autopilot was fixed after all. So Bruce Might have survived.   Then we see Alfred taking a trip to that cafe. The one where he used to fantasise about seeing Bruce happy and okay. He looks up, and there he is. Bruce is sitting at a table with Selina. They nod to each other and Alfred leaves. All is okay now. It seems that the clean slate program has given both Bruce and Selina a fresh start.   This is a powerful scene. It pays off the earlier scene so beautifully. It shows that Bruce and  Selina have made a happy new life together, but most importantly, it provides reconciliation between Bruce and Alfred. Forgiveness. A promise that they are still family.   It's a wonderful way to end the movie.   As for Bruce and Selina, I love that they end up together. There is always an aspect of attraction and tension between Batman and Catwoman. But this movie didn't do enough to establish that. They kiss shortly before he dies, for no real reason. And that's it. I think It would have worked better if they'd established a little more between them earlier in the movie, maybe instead of with Miranda. The sex with Miranda did nothing other than to make her betrayal sting a little worse, but honestly, I don't that was needed. Miranda's betrayal would have been just as powerful whether they'd had sex together or not.   So … how can I sum up this movie? I derive some enjoyment from watching it, and I'll probably watch it again some day. But in terms of quality, it's not even in the same league as Batman Begins or The Dark Knight. This one has a reputation for not being as good, and I do think they dropped the ball. I can't help but wonder if it was rushed. It seemed like they needed a little more time to revise the script. I was going to say that a longer runtime might have helped it as well, but I was surprised to look up and learn that this movie was actually the longest in the trilogy.   I found myself really having to concentrate to fully get my head around this one. I had a similar experience with The Dark Knight, but that was because there was so much going on. But all those pieces fit together beautifully like a jigsaw puzzle. It was meticulously put together. There was a lot less going on with this one, but the pieces didn't seem to fit together quite as well, and some of the pieces were missing.   So what do I like about it? It's got some really cool visuals. The effects and the camera work are beautiful to look at. I liked Blake's character. I liked Batman's sacrifice and his new secret life. That whole last scene is beautiful. I liked Anne Hathaway's portrayal of Selina Kyle, though as I said I felt they could have done more with her and Batman. I liked that they tried to tie this in a lot to Batman Begins, to round off the trilogy and make it feel whole and complete. But I don't think they really succeeded in doing that effectively. And I like the whole Bane breaking Batman's back thing, and I liked Bruce's journey of getting himself back on his feet and out of that prison - although the timing doesn't really work.   So that's a decent list of positives.   This was as good as the average superhero movie, but a bit of a disappointment when compared to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.   Ultimately, though, this trilogy has held up really well for me. The awesomeness of the first two more than makes up for the shortcomings of the third. This trilogy changed the way Superhero movies were made. At least for a time. It showed that Superheroes really could be taken seriously as dramatic characters. And it laid the foundations for the Snyder universe that I love and adore so much.   I've enjoyed covering these movies. I hope you've enjoyed my thoughts on them. Next time, we start a whole new adventure. We're going to be covering all ten episodes of Star Trek Continues. It's gonna be a lot of fun, so I hope you'll join me for that.   Until then, have a great two weeks Live long and prosper. Make it so.

Seemingly ordinary encounter with a common criminal causes Batman to question the validity of his war on crime. The following events set Bruce Wayne on a collision course with his "evil twin" of sorts, giving Bruce a glimpse of the man he could have become without the loving guidance of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Thrilling tale of suspense that crafts together Bat-mythology and real-world social commentary about the cause and effect of crime, as well as a relatable and heartfelt story that explores the complicated relationships between fathers and sons. Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice - PART 2 - Discussion & Analysis

We're back for part 2 of our discussion on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. We pick up right where we left off, with Superman surrounded by flames. There's definately a lot to talk about in this movie, which is why I split it into two parts. Let's dig deep into this fascinating movie. ----more---- Transcript   Lex is conspicuously absent from his seat in the hearing. Finch finds a little message he left behind for her, referencing an earlier conversation. And then the wheelchair explodes, taking out the senate building.  And Superman is distraught as he stands there, surrounded but unharmed by the flames that kill the vulnerable humans around him. At that same moment, Bruce sees the final message from Wallace. “You let your family Die.” This of course, is referencing his employees. It seems this guy not only blames superman, but he blames Bruce as well, for not protecting his workers from an alien invasion. That’s pretty unreasonable. But these words really set Bruce off. His family DID die. He watched his parents be gunned down. At this point in the story, we’re faced with a question. Did Lex hide the bomb in the wheelchair without the knowledge of Wallace, who sat in it, or was Wallace a willing martyr?   This now, is the moment when the movie starts to get dark. Until now, it really hasn’t been. Superman is Helping bring survivors out of the building. It’s not much, but it’s all he can do. This explosion wasn’t his fault, but he can’t help but blame himself. He knows that someone is using him, everything he stands for, to hurt people. And that brakes him.   Now here’s the one moment that does make me a little uncomfortable in the movie. Superman leaves. Are there still survivors in the building? The movie doesn’t really say at this point. If there are, and he’s abandoning them because he can’t handle the pain of this moment, then he’s being very un-Superman. But I have to believe that he’s already got all the survivors out that he can. Although a news report in a later shot seems to suggest there may still be survivors. If there’s one thing in this movie that I’d change, it would be this. I’d say that may have gone a step too far in actually having Superman abandon the suffering like this. But it shows the turmoil he’s in. I would suggest that right now he’s feeling like his help is not wanted. That it may even be inappropriate for him to be there. Haven’t you ever felt that? When someone is upset because of something you’ve done. You want to walk away because you feel like you’re the last person they’d want to comfort them. And yet, you’re wrong. They don’t want you to walk away. I know I’ve been in that situation. So I think I understand what they were trying to portray here.   Having the final push he needed, Bruce steals the Kryptonite from Lex. He’s gonna do it. He’s gonna kill Superman. In true Batman tradition, he begins to plan. He readies the Kryptonite, and he strengthens his body. He’ll never be as strong as Superman, of course, but he needs every edge he can get.   Superman is doubting himself. He’s doubting everything. He’s been living the life he believed his father wanted him to live. Saving people for a ghost. How arrogant to have thought he was here to do good, like some biblical prophet. A man with a destiny. How could he have thought so highly of himself. He says Superman was never real. He didn’t see the bomb because he wasn’t looking for it. Superman has come face to face with his fallibility. But worse than that, he’s come face to face with the consequences of his fallibility. He has such power, that when he makes a mistake, the consequences are huge. He can’t do that anymore. He can’t be that.   People criticise this movie, saying that Superman spends the whole film brooding, but that’s supposed to be Batman’s thing.  But, this is the first or maybe two scenes in the film that Superman has actually brooded, if you really want to call it that.  Personally, I’d call it taking a good long look at himself, which is exactly what the dictates of story-structure demand, by the way. No, up until now, Superman has been the idealistic reporter. The complete opposite of Batman. Given all he’s going through, you can forgive the guy for losing his faith and his hope.   But Lois reminds him that the symbol he wears on his chest means hope. That hope is real for a lot of people. Clark acknowledges that it stood for hope on Krypton, but he’s not convinced it does here. Not anymore. But we’ll come back to this.   Now Lex puts the next step of his plan into motion. This isn’t exactly a backup plan B. It’s just another part of the complex web he’s weaving. He puts Zod’s body into the Genesis chamber, he learns that Zod was from the city of Kandor. Lex blends his own DNA with Zod’s to create a monstrosity once known, and outlawed, on Krypton.   Now we get a little tease for the future of the DC extended Universe. Bruce looks at the meta-human research from the hard drive he stole from Lex. There he learns of Wonder Woman, who apparently hasn’t aged since 1918. I love how we see this photo which depicts a scene from the Wonder Woman movie, which hasn’t even come out yet. It was really cool.   Lois finds proof that Wallace didn’t know he was going to die. He’d bought groceries. The wheelchair was made from the same metal as the bullet. And it was lined with lead so Superman couldn’t see the bomb. It’s all becoming even more apparent that Lex is manipulating the entire situation from the background. The world had accepted Superman, but Lex couldn’t handle that, so he’s been pushing his pieces around the board to heighten the natural fear people had of Superman’s power. Fears they had mostly put to rest. But he’s been waking them up again.   So we get a nice little scene where Clark sees his dead father. He’s come to the top of a mountain, is it Everest? He needs advice, but he’s got nobody to go to. Both his father figures are dead. So his subconscious, his imagination, re-creates his dad, Jonathan Kent, the man who raised him, the man who made him what he is. Desperately hoping for some words of wisdom.   Jonathan tells a story, Probably one he told Clark in the past, that he’s now remembering, of a time he worked hard to save his dad’s farm, only to realise his actions had doomed the neighbour’s farm. It was an unexpected consequence from his actions which had been nothing but good-intentioned. It’s a story Clark can relate to. Jonathan also explains how Martha helped him see there is good in this world.   See, there’s a lot of positivity weaved into this movie. I don’t deny that it’s dark, although it’s nowhere near as dark as some people like to make out. But personally, I find, as others have said before, that the light shines brightest in the dark. A story needs both. If you don’t see the darkness in a story, then you don’t get to see the triumph of light. Some have referred to this movie as Grimdark. I strongly disagree. I think a much better descriptor of the genre of this film is, as I first heard E Stephen Burnett of Speculative Faith say, is Nobledark.  Because ultimately, this movie shows the triumph of nobility over darkness.   Alfred tries to talk Bruce out of his suicidal plan. You can’t win, not against Superman. Bruce notes that he’s older now, that his father ever was. That must be an unsettling realisation. Bruce has spent 20 years stopping criminals. But as he says, they’re like weeds. You pull one out and another takes its place. Bruce is looking for something more. He’s searching for purpose. He wants to make a lasting difference in this world.  I guess you could say he’s having something of a mid-life crisis, but as Batman, he does everything bigger and more intense. As he sees it, ridding the world of Superman may be the one thing he ever does that matters. In his own way, he’s wanting to save the world.   Lex pushes Lois off a building to get Superman’s attention. It’s time to put the final stage of his plan into motion.   And this is where we begin to understand what this is all about. Why Lex is doing this. As a child, Lex was abused by his father. Nobody intervened. No Superman. Not God. Lex has come to the conclusion that if God is all powerful then he can’t be all good, and if he’s all good, he can’t be all powerful. You see, this is the age-old question of suffering and evil. A question that philosophers and theologians have been debating for centuries. Millennia. In fact, when Superman appears, Lex says outright, this is about the problem of evil in the world. Lex likens Superman to God, the God he feels failed to help him as a child. Lex can’t abide the idea of a heroic Superman because of his perceptions of God. Superman cannot be good, given his power. And he wants the world to see that. He wants to expose Superman as the fraud he believes him to be. This whole thing is because of Lex’s theological beliefs. Of course, Superman is not God. He is neither all powerful, nor all good. Superman has unimaginable powers, when compared to a human, but those powers have limits. Superman cannot shape the entire world to his will.  He couldn’t save the people in that senate building. And he’s not all good, either. He may not be human, but he’s still a man. A man with all the frailties, and flaws that come with the package. Lex confirms that the red notes were not from Wallace. They were from him. Lex has spent two years setting this up, pushing Bruce bit by bit until he goes over the edge. Lex never intended to use that Kryptonite himself. He’s not gonna get his hands dirty like that. And frankly, he doesn’t have what it takes to defeat Superman in battle. Lex isn’t a fighter. He’s a manipulator. He wanted Bruce to use the Kryptonite. He wants Bruce to try to kill Superman. But ultimately, he wants Superman to kill Bruce. He wants Superman to be exposed as a killer. Either way, Lex wins. Either Superman is shown to be good, or powerful, but not both.   And now he reveals that he’s kidnapped Clark’s mother. If Clark doesn’t kill Batman, Martha will die. Clarke and Bruce have very opposing philosophies, but it’s taken all this manipulation to make Superman and Batman fight. I think this movie makes it all very believable.   So just when Clark thought he had worked through his issues, He says those words which critics of this film love to quote. “Nobody stays good in this world.” And that’s how he is honestly feeling at the moment. It doesn’t mean he is right. But he says outright to Lois, his primary intention here is to convince Batman to help him. He’s not going there to kill. He wants to find another way out of this. He’s been in this situation before. In the last movie, he was forced to kill Zod And that broke him.. He’s in a similar situation here now. He doesn’t want to have to kill again. He’s determined to find another way. Once again he’s in the position of having to choose between taking a life, or letting the innocent die. This time it’s not all the people of the world, it’s his mother, who he loves. You see, in his desperation, his words say that nobody stays good, and yet, his actions tell a different story. His actions show that he is still looking for another way. And yet, he can’t let his mother die.   Meanwhile, Dianna finds an email from Bruce. He cracked the data, which she hasn’t been able to do. She sees the photo, that meant so much to her. She hasn’t seen that photo in almost a century. But he’s got more for her. We see information about other metahumans. The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. This was all setup for Justice League, and it was a fun tease.   In true Superman form, he starts by talking. “Bruce, I was wrong. Lex is--” But Bruce isn’t interested in talk. He never gives Superman the chance to explain. Clarke gives an effective demonstration of his power before saying “If I wanted it, you’d be dead already.” See, it’s hard to even call this a real battle. Because Superman doesn’t really fight Batman. He’s certainly not trying to kill him. But this is when Bruce employs the Kryptonite in gaseous form. Superman feels fear for the first time when he realises his strength is gone. Bruce makes a good point when he says Superman isn’t brave. He isn’t. He’s never had to be. Men like Bruce are brave, because they can be hurt.  The fight between them is a very small piece of the movie. If this film had a failing, I’m convinced that failing was bad marketing. Possibly even the wrong title. I think a lot of people came into this movie with the wrong expectations. I think a lot of them were expecting a popcorn superhero battle. You know, the age old question, who would win in a fight. It’s a very geeky question, but ultimately pointless. So they came in for popcorn, but were served a nice steak dinner. And then they complained that the steak dinner wasn’t very good popcorn. I remember going into the cinema to see this movie. There were posters saying “Who will win.” They even had stickers, with Batman and Superman logos you could put on the poster, to predict who you thought would win. That’s not the point. That’s not what this movie is about. As long as they’re fighting, they’re both losing. So Bruce finally has Superman at his mercy. He pulls out the pre-prepared Kryptonite spear. He’s gonna use it to kill superman. He stands over him, with the deadly weapon. And says what I already discussed. “You were never a god.   This is Clark’s last chance. So he forces out the words. “You’re letting him kill Martha.”   And while he doesn’t know it, those are the words that are gonna really speak to Bruce.   Ok. This is the most ridiculed moment in this movie. And quite unfairly in my opinion. Bruce wants to know what Clark means. Did Clark know that Bruce’s mother was also called martha? Maybe. Perhaps that’s why he says Martha, rather than “My mother.” Bruce’s whole life has been defined by the death of Martha Wayne. But Bruce couldn’t save Martha. Martha was taken from him.  Lois arrives just in time to explain that Martha is Clark’s mother’s name.   Now, they don’t suddenly become friends because their mothers have the same name, as the memes suggest. Bruce realises a bunch of things at this moment. First of all, this humanised Superman in his eyes. Superman has a mother. But Bruce had already acknowledged Superman’s parents earlier in the battle.   But it raises an important question. Why is Superman talking about his mother? Now, at the moment of his impending death. Why ask Bruce to save Martha?   He realises at this moment that there’s more going on. He realises that they’re both being manipulated. Manipulated by Lex Luthor. Superman is only here because he’s being coerced. If he kills Superman, then he becomes the thug from that ally. He kills Martha.   And that cannot be. Martha cannot die. Not again. Bruce won’t be that guy. He thought he was saving the world from a monster, but now he realises that he’s just the pawn of the monster. The real monster.   Bruce won’t kill martha and he sure as hell won’t do Lex Luthor’s dirty work.   That’s why he drops the spear. It makes sense. It’s dramatic. It’s emotional. It’s powerful. Dare I say, it’s beautiful. And that music, we get a reprise of the music from the opening credits, where we saw the Waynes killed. I’ll say it again. Hans Zimmer and JunkieXL are absolute masters of their craft.   Something is happening at the Kryptonian scout ship. Superman is needed, but his mother needs him too. And that’s when Bruce says those beautiful words. “I give you a promise, Martha won’t die tonight.” This is Bruce’s chance to finally put his demons to rest. Tonight he saves Martha.   Superman makes the decision to trust Bruce to save his mother, and goes off to do what only he can.   What follows is a truly epic battle as Batman takes out Luthor’s thugs to save Martha. It’s a wonderful action movie sequence. Some have criticised Batman for killing in this scene. I’m fine with it. We’ve established this is a battle-hardened Batman who has lost any idealism he may have once had. He’s here to save Martha. Nobody is gonna stand in his way. Tonight, he’s a soldier.  He’ll go through anyone that stands in his way. And Batman HAS killed before in multiple media. I mentioned in my Man of Steel podcast, that in the 1989 movie, Batman murdered a minor thug while cracking a joke.   I really like the moment when Bruce finally arrives and saves Martha. And then we get yet another joke. “It’s ok, I’m a friend of your son’s.” “I figured. The cape.” This was a nice little chuckle-worthy moment. This movie DOES have humour in it.   So this is the next stage of Lex’s plan. After Superman had  been discredited as a killer, he still needs to be taken out. Doomsday was there to actually kill him. But it makes me wonder, what was Lex’s plan for deal with Doomsday if Batman had been victorious?   So let’s talk about Doomsday. He’s pretty creepy I might have preferred if he looked a little more like he did in the comics, with the spies sticking out of him, but I do like his appearance. He looks suitably hellish, .   But what really makes Doomsday scary and effective as a villain? It’s not what he looks like. Doomsday brings out our deepest fears because he killed Superman in the comics. If even Superman can die, then what can possibly save us?   But surely they weren’t going to do that in this movie.  What a waste of doomsday to bring him in now as a last minute threat.   I think that’s what a lot of us were thinking.   Dianna sees what’s happening and sets off to help. So does Bruce. The president is willing to let Superman die as an innocent casualty if it means killing doomsday, but the nuke doesn’t do the job. Doomsday falls back to earth and continues his rampage, with no Superman to stop him. Enter Batman and Wonder Woman. The nuke seems to have made Doomsday even more powerful. And now he’s starting to look more like he did in  the comics. Of course, Superman’s not dead either. He just needs to be recharged by the rays of Earth’s sun. We don’t see a lot of Wonder Woman in this movie, but what we do see is pretty darn awesome. Her introduction as she saved Bruce from a blast of doomsday’s heat vision is fantastic. And yet again the movie gives Lois a chance to make a significant contribution to saving the day as she tries to retrieve the kryptonite spear.   There’s another humorous moment when Superman asks, about Wonder Woman, “is she with you?” And Batman replies “I thought she was with you.   So then, as the music that will become the new wonder woman theme plays, we see them standing together for the first time, the trinity of DC comics. It’s such a wonderful moment.   The battle that ensues is a feast for the senses. Bruce and Dianna are fighting a losing battle against this thing. They’re trying to keep it busy, but they can’t kill it, although Dianna does some significant damage, but it just grows back stronger.   As soon as Clark says “I love you,” to Lois, we know what’s coming, and so does she.   It’s a very emotional moment. She cries out as he flies off, grabbing the kryptonite spear. Every second he holds it, he weakens. Superman is the only one who can get close enough to stab Doomsday with the spear, but in his weakened state, he is vulnerable, and doomsday stabs him through the chest, symbolically, through the symbol that represents hope. So has doomsday destroyed our hope by taking Superman from us?   This is the moment that Superman redeems himself. Superman had said earlier, that nobody stays good. Superman has proven himself wrong. He resolved the situation with Bruce without bloodshed, and now, he makes the ultimate sacrifice. He gives his life to save the world. Superman proved himself wrong. And he proved Lex wronth. I’m watching this in that cinema, and thinking, I can’t believe it. They’re really going there. They’re going to have Doomsday kill Superman! They’re actually doing it.   Despite what those critics said, I think this movie is dripping with hope and nobility. I saw this movie opening night in Australia. It was Good Friday. That made this moment all the more poignant. On a day that I had been remembering the sacrificial death of Jesus, I watched the sacrificial death of Superman. It impacted me in a powerful way. It moved me deeply.   We get that quick image of Steppenwolf. It’s a little confusing. Is it meant to be a hologram? I mean, he’s not actually there in the scout ship, right?   Lex is captured. And he has his head shaved in jail, giving us a more classic Lex Luthor look (but let’s not forget, early versions of Lex weren’t bald, they had orange hair, just like the lex in this movie)   So we see two funerales. A state funeral for Superman (clearly with no body). And a small funeral for Clark. I think it’s fitting that the body is in Smallville, with his family. It’s nice to see the minister from Man of Steel performing the ceremony. No doubt the local pastor in Smallville. Martha probably attended his church. We also see Pete Ross there.   And this is a very emotional moment, as Lois sees the engagement ring Clark had intended to give her, and would have, had he not died. I got choked up when I first saw this.   Bruce is a changed man. He’s been truly impacted by Superman’s example and his sacrifice. When he says “Men are still good”, it pays off that moment when Superman said “Nobody stays good.”  Bruce has finally found his purpose.   This last moment in the movie is filled with optimism and hope.   And when you see the Superman logo with the words “If you seek his monument, look around you” it shows how Superman has inspired the words, and it proves that Superman’s symbol still stands for hope. It always will now. No, Doomsday hasn’t robbed us of our hope. That symbol stands stronger than ever before.   Bruce knows there’s more danger coming from out there in the universe. He knows this from questioning Lex, who says “The bell’s already been rung, and they’re heard it.” Lex has sent some kind of message.   And so he asks Dianna to help him find the other meta-humans. They’re going to need to come together and fight, if they hope to save earth from whatever is coming, now that Superman is no more.   This of course, is setting up Justice League. And that very last shot as the dirt begins to move, on Clarks coffin, gives us hope, that Superman may rise again.   One of the biggest issues some people have with these two films is the portrayal of Superman with flaws. It’s one of the few criticisms I give any credence to, even though I disagree with it.   I have a theory as to why this bothers some people, but not others. And to explain it, I need to talk about Star Trek. Let me quote Jeri Taylor, one of the writers on TNG and Voyager. In this quote from the book Star Trek The Next Generation - The Continuing Voyager by Judith and Garfield reeves-Stevens, she is speculating on the reason for the appeal of Star Trek.   “We don’t have them anymore. We have lost the traditional arenas of heroes. We don’t have gods and legends and myth anymore. We have lost sports figures as heroes--they have been proven all too human and vulnerable. We have lost politicians. We have lost movie stars. We’ve even lost royalty, who have feet of clay also. So, there doesn’t seem to be those icons, now, that are the role models, larger-than-life people who are better than we are, who are heroic, who stand for something. I think that what Gene gave us in Star Trek characters is these larger-than-life people who are committed to an ethical and moral way of life, who are not afraid to go into the wilderness and to confront the feats and terrors of the demons and dragons that are out there, who have a moral principle and a moral centre, and who will not stray from that, no matter what. Star Trek presents godlike figures for us to admire and emulate. And I think that is a need that people have deep inside them that is not being satisfied otherwise today.”   I think this also explains why Superman is popular to many people. They’re looking to him to fill that same need. That’s why some fans want to keep Superman on that pedestal, and not let him have any flaws.   But, I haven’t lost my god. I’m a Christian. I still believe. I have Jesus to fill that need deep inside me. I don’t look to fiction to fill that need. So I prefer flawed characters in my fiction. I still want heroes with that moral centre, but I don’t expect them to be perfect. Because none of us are.   Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying all atheists hate this movie, and all people of faith like it. But we all come to stories for different reasons. Not every story is going to satisfy every person’s reasons. And that’s okay. I’ve never been under any illusion that this movie is for everyone. But I’m one of the people who loved it. For me, it worked. I was in the target audience. And I for one, was very  glad that Warner Bros chose to make this niche movie for people like me, rather than water it down and produce something with mass appeal.   Of course, as we’ll see, as we continue through these movies, that wouldn’t continue to be their approach. But that’s another story.   You can go a lot deeper into this movie than I have in this podcast episode. If you’re interested in going further down the rabbit hole, I’d like to recommend another podcast. It’s called Batman V Superman By The Minute. This podcast will spend an entire episode talking about 1 minute of the movie. It’s pretty full on. But now that I’ve recorded my thoughts, I intend to go through and binge their episodes. Should keep me busy for a while. I invite you check them out. Next time, I plan to talk about Suicide Squad. That should be a shorter episode. Catch you then.

The series stars Ben McKenzieas the young Gordon, while Heller executive produces along with Danny Cannon, who also directed the pilot. As originally conceived, the series would have served as a straightforward story of Gordon's early days on the Gotham City Police Department. Agradecimentos a toda audiência deste podcast. The guys also announce a couple new projects coming down the pipe. The audio levels aren't quite right. We're still working on making this all work out the way we want it to. Did we just find out who was behind the Wayne Murders? Check our our Gotham S02E18 Pinewood Podcast where we discuss this along with our top five points about this episode from the return of completely sane Babs to Jim Gordon cracking skulls, a mission for Mr. Freeze and some hints at animal experimentation by Professor Strange. Synopsis of Gotham S02E18 Pinewood Podcast Directed by: John Stephens Written by: Robert Hull and Megan Mostyn-Brown As Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) and Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) renew their investigation into the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne they come across a reference to Pinewood Farm on Wayne's now fixed computer. Their enquiries lead them to a remote cabin where they find a genetically altered, former inmate of Blackgate Prison called Karen Jennings (Julia Taylor Ross) who was experimented on at Wayne Enterprises by a scientist known only as the Philosopher. At the same time Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), with a little assistance from Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) who is attempting to make amends with Jim, discovers that the person who contracted Matches Malone was also the Philosopher. Jennings offers to identify the mystery man just as Hugo Strange (BD Wong) sends a newly suited Victor Fries (Nathan Darrow) to kill her in order to cover up his illegal experiments. Meanwhile Lucius Fox makes a shocking revelation that the Philosopher is one of Thomas Wayne's former friend's from project chimera. Jim instantly identifies him as Hugo Strange. However unnatural tests are coming to fruition under Indian Hill, as Hugo Strange's resurrection project finally begins to work and an unexpected someone rises from the dead affirming the name Azreal, Azreal, Azreal. This week on Gotham it was time to be very very afraid as we were introduced to the Crane family in Episode 14 of Gotham The Fearsome Doctor Crane which aired in the UK on Monday 30th March 2015. We also introduce another Doctor from Gotham in the shape of the (former) G.C.P.D. Medical Examiner, as Philip Hernandez who plays Doctor Guerra left a very special message for our listeners. In the message he explains his scenes in the episode and provides some extra little bits that he brought to the character of Doctor Guerra. He also vows to return to exact his revenge on Ed Nygma! You can follow Philip Hernadez on Twitter and check out his website and blog for all those interested in acting and learning the profession. In this episode of Gotham the G.C.P.D. investigate a series of murders that surround an anonymous support group for people with debilitating phobias. The perpetrator seemingly is extracting their adrenal gland for no obvious reason. As Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock investigate these crimes, Jim is released from his involvement in the investigation of Thomas and Martha Wayne's murder by the young Bruce Wayne, seemingly frustrated at the lack of progress in the official case. All the while a romantic air falls over the G.C.P.D as Harvey finds his soft centre for the leader of the support group, Ms. Mullens, and Jim's relationship with Leslie Thompkins evolves through an unexpected dinner date. Meanwhile at the Precinct a professional spat between the Medical Examiner, Dr. Guerra and Ed Nygma leads to the suspension of Ed from the Forensics Unit before he implicates Guerra in the collection of spare body parts from the morgue. Is Guerra Ed Nyma's (aka The Riddler) first victim? As Jim and Harvey narrow down their list of suspects, they race to an abandoned swimming pool where Mullens is in danger as a Doctor Gerald Crane is revealed as the murderer at large. With his actions are driven by a longing to release him and his son, Jonathon Crane from their debilitating F.E.A.R. We discuss all these top five case points surrounding  Episode 14 of Gotham. Feedback We discuss all the feedback that has come in from our listeners on everything from Welcome Back Jim Gordon to our thoughts about whether Gotham should have a time jump. Make sure to send your thoughts to feedback@gothamtvpodcast.com We also give a big shout out to Victoria Cartagena (Detective Renee Montoya on Gotham) who celebrated her birthday on the 31st of March. If you haven't had the chance you can hear our interviews with Victoria and of course her partner Detective Crispus Allen (played by Andrew Stewart-Jones) at the links below. We want to wish Victoria a great birthday and another great year on Gotham. Interview 1 - https://gothamtvpodcast.com/gotham-tv-podcast-exclusive-in-the-interview-room-with-gothams-victoria-cartagena-and-andrew-stewart-jones/ Interview 2 - https://gothamtvpodcast.com/gotham-tv-podcast-live-mcu-interview/ The music at the end of this weeks episode is Nouvelle Vague's cover song of Love will Tear Us Apart (feat. Eloisia) from their self-titled album Nouvelle Vague. This song was playing in the background of the restaurant where Jim Gordon met Leslie Thompkins for what she thought was another date but turned out to be some professional consultation. Join us again next week as we discuss Episode 15 of Gotham The Scarecrow. We're excited to see how the beginnings of Jonathon Crane's fear leads to his journey towards becoming the Scarecrow.
