Brian, Darryl, and Brian Celebrate a Huge Milestone This week on the podcast, Brian, Darryl, and the returning Brian Williams, talk about episode 4 of The Penguin. Then they talk about how the pop culture landscape has changed over the last 450 episodes of The Infamous Podcast. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 The Penguin: 5:51 10 years of Podcasting: 34:09 The Penguin (Max) Out of 5 Nothing Like an Unplanned Arkham Vacations Darryl: 4.45/5 Brian: 4.71/5 Episode 4: Cent’Anni Plot Overview: In The Penguin Episode 4, titled “Cent'anni,” tensions escalate as Oswald Cobb (Oz) continues to assert his dominance in Gotham's criminal underworld. The episode focuses on a significant family gathering that brings out both personal and professional challenges for Oz. While trying to solidify key alliances, Oz faces betrayal and tests of loyalty that push him further down a dark path. The backdrop of this celebration contrasts with the lurking dangers of his growing empire. Character relationships are explored deeply, and the episode hints at even larger power struggles ahead. Breakdown: Opening Scene – The Celebration: The episode opens with a lavish family gathering—a celebration of sorts, complete with opulence and a traditional Italian toast, “Cent'anni,” which translates to “a hundred years” in hopes of long life and prosperity. This event brings together Gotham's crime families, highlighting both the power dynamics and uneasy alliances between them. Oswald Cobblepot (Oz) is at the center, using the occasion to strengthen his position in the criminal world. Family Ties and Conflict: A significant part of the episode revolves around Oz's relationship with his family, specifically his mother and an estranged cousin who arrives unexpectedly at the celebration. Tensions run high as old family wounds are reopened, and Oz is forced to navigate both personal grievances and strategic alliances. These scenes provide deeper insights into Oz's motivations and vulnerabilities, as family loyalty becomes a central focus. Business and Betrayal: While the gathering is framed as a celebration, it quickly becomes clear that it's also an opportunity for rival factions to test each other. Oz is confronted with the threat of betrayal, as one of his key partners appears to be working with his enemies. There's a subplot involving a secret deal that unfolds during the episode, adding suspense and setting the stage for the power moves that follow. The Confrontation: Midway through the episode, tensions erupt into violence when a betrayal is uncovered. Oz must take decisive action to maintain control, resulting in a brutal confrontation that shows his willingness to go to any lengths to protect his growing empire. The action here is intense and underscores the dangerous world in which Oz operates. Oz's Internal Struggle: Throughout the episode, Oz wrestles with the balance between his personal life and his criminal ambitions. He's increasingly isolated, realizing that the closer he gets to power, the more distant he becomes from the person he once was. There's a poignant scene where Oz reflects on his family legacy and the path he's on, showing glimpses of internal conflict and doubt. The Final Scene – A Toast to the Future: The episode ends with a symbolic moment, as Oz stands alone in the aftermath of the celebration, reflecting on the toasts made earlier. While the gathering promised prosperity and unity, the reality of his world is far more fractured. The closing shot is Oz raising a glass to his reflection, toasting his own survival, foreshadowing his continued rise and the increasing dangers he faces. Themes: Loyalty and Betrayal: The theme of loyalty is central to “Cent'anni.” The episode explores how loyalty is both a strength and a vulnerability in the criminal world. Oz is faced with betrayal from those he thought were allies, forcing him to confront the harsh reality that trust is a rare commodity in Gotham's underworld. Family loyalty, particularly between Oz and his mother, contrasts with the more ruthless betrayals that take place in his business dealings. Family Legacy and Identity: The focus on Oz's family introduces the theme of legacy. “Cent'anni” highlights how deeply Oz's past and family history shape his present actions. He's caught between maintaining the Cobblepot name and creating his own legacy as the Penguin. The episode explores how our families influence our identities, for better or worse, and how that legacy can be both a burden and a motivator. Power and Isolation: As Oz climbs higher in the criminal world, he becomes more isolated. The episode delves into the theme of how power can lead to loneliness. Despite being surrounded by people, Oz is increasingly cut off from genuine human connection, as everyone around him is either a threat or a pawn. This isolation is depicted in both personal and professional aspects of his life, showing how his quest for power is distancing him from his own humanity. Celebration as a Facade: The title “Cent'anni” and the celebration at the center of the episode are symbolic. While the gathering is meant to be a joyous occasion, it serves as a facade for the darker realities lurking underneath. This contrast between the surface appearance of prosperity and the underlying tension speaks to the broader theme of appearances versus reality in Gotham's criminal world. Nothing is as it seems, and even moments of celebration are tinged with danger and deceit. Survival and Sacrifice: Oz's rise to power requires constant sacrifice, both of himself and others. The theme of survival is woven throughout the episode, as Oz is forced to make difficult choices to stay ahead in the brutal world he inhabits. His willingness to sacrifice relationships, and possibly parts of his own mortality, is key to his continued ascent. Things get chilly as we tackle PENGUIN! How has this businessman managed to survive in Gotham so long? Listen to find out! Intro Background (4:30) The Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot, created by Bill Finger & Bob Kane in Detective Comics #58 (Dec. 1941) The Penguin was one of Batman's earliest nemeses – a short, stout man with a long, beaklike nose who dressed in a top hat and monocle He started off as a thief who worked with a bird motif in his robberies, but almost always managed to outsmart Batman & Robin and escape Name was finally revealed as Oswald Cobblepot in The Best of DC #10 (March 1981) – his backstory was that of a bullied child with an overprotective mother who was obsessed with birds, and after she died he entered a life of crime to seek vengeance upon the world that shunned him After repeatedly being beaten by Batman, and further embarrassed by Jean-Paul Valley, he opens a restaurant casino called the Iceberg Lounge, which he uses as a front for criminal activity, and begins operating as a criminal overlord In No Man's Land, he remains in Gotham after everyone abandons it following the earthquake – his connections make him one of the most powerful people in the city Occasionally serves as an informant to Batman, who keeps a close eye on him – Batman feels the Penguin is a necessary evil, and any power vacuum created by his absence would be worse than he is Issues - Overcompensation (8:12) Ariel – why someone born to wealth would end up as a crime lord Ariel – his bizarre relationship with women (15:28) Semi-Oedipal complex with his mother (24:18) Break (32:58) Plugs for Grief Burrito, Freudian Sips, and Saladin Ahmed Treatment (34:22) In-universe - Use financial planning to help him reconfigure his goals & desires Out of universe - spoiled affluenza-ridden orphan who uses their money to seek revenge on people (39:09) Skit (43:24) Hello Mr. Cobblepot, I'm Dr. Issues – And a good day to you too, sir. Might I interest you in a glass of champagne while we talk? It's a 1959 Dom Perignon Rose. I don't drink while I'm working, and I'm not certain you should be drinking during a session either. How did you even get a bottle and glasses past the security? – Oh posh, you needn't bother yourself with trifling matters such as that. I certainly don't. Life is so short, so why not enjoy the fine things? Were we not put here to take advantage of all life has to offer? Be that as it may, I'll pass. I must say, I'm rather surprised at your cavalier attitude, given your… current surroundings. – A temporary snafu, Doctor. Rest assured this will all be taken care of presently. A man of my stature doesn't stay imprisoned for very long. Now I assume you're here to provide an overview of my mental health for the DA's office? Well let me save you the trouble, I'm entirely compos mentis. So you can go ahead and just copy the report from the last time I was here, update the dates, maybe summarize that brief misunderstanding I had with the Bat about how I came to acquire the jewelry, and we'll both be on our way. Nice try, but I'm afraid it won't be quite so simple. – Oh but it will be. You see, dear Doctor, there are two sets of rules in this world. There's one set for people like you – and rest assured that statement has nothing to do with the amount of melanin in your skin – where you remain subject to a dull life filled with repetition and servitude, hoping to rise above your status like Icarus, but inevitably your wings melt and you land with a thud among the common rabble. You spend your entire life trying to escape the box. And then there's another set of rules for people like me, which is to say there are no rules. I don't have to envision escaping the box, because for me there never was a box. And yet here you are, quite literally inside a box, while I sit comfortably outside of it. – Again, this is a temporary setback. So since you're temporarily in the box, let's talk. You could do anything you wanted with your resources. Why did you choose crime? – I came from a lineage of people accustomed to a particular lifestyle, and my family had plans for me. Unfortunately, those plans were incompatible with my… appearance. My family was not so understanding or appreciative of my unique nature. And after they all befell such horrible tragedies and accidents, it was just me and dear mother. She was so lonely and needed someone to take care of her. So I did what any good son did. I established myself and gave her the lifestyle she deserved. By taking from others who also deserve the same lifestyle? Because you say so? You can see the slippery slope where I'm taking this -Oh but my dear doctor, there is no need for imagination when it comes to that level of speculatory relevance. Look around you! To be frank, neither of us need to worry ourselves with the dregs of society. That's not what I'm about. That's why my club still has the highest rating in Travel and Leisure Magazine as I bide my time…legally indisposed. Fascinating. You really do care what people think of you, don't you. Not your looks; you're beyond that now. But the glamor of it all. Prestige is your love language. That explains why you don't care about Gotham. -*pause* I beg your pardon? Well I mean it seems like you're willing to gut the essence of a major city and pollute it with crime. At least white collar types usually try to coat their disdain with gentrification. -I would do no such thing *Interrupting* Arson, theft, assault, terroristic threats, those are the accusations on your rap sheet. Heck, Al Capone got caught for tax evasion. How is it that unsophisticated thugs can cover their tracks better than you, and you keep up with the facade of a distinguished gentleman? - Careful, Doctor, your tongue is starting to betray the rest of your body. It'd be a shame to have to excise it from your skull. So you don't like what I have to say. That's the type of stress any gentleman would encounter in normal interaction. That shouldn't lead to threats of violence. -The only correction I must make is that it is not a threat. It is a guarantee. Alright, if that's the way you're going to go about it, then there is no point in continuing to talk. -But there is, my dear doctor. You see, I have no intention of ending this discussion without expanding my…sphere of influence. And no, that is not in reference to my physical form. What sort of influence can I add for you? -You know people. Important people. Otherwise, you would not be assigned to evaluate me. But I can leverage that to my advantage. Tell me, Dr. Issues, what your career would look like, if you were named an accomplice to my crimes? *laughs* that's not possible. -Really now? Even though I have access to my own records and can reverse engineer them to say that you knew about all of them and never reported them? But this is the first time I've seen -*interrupting* it doesn't matter what we SAY, here, doctor, only what is documented. You know that. I'm not privy to share my ways, but let's just say that, oh right about now, several friends and family will learn of your attempts on their lives, their residences, their places of employment…all because you wanted to be more powerful and wanted my help. *tsk tsk tsk* for shame, a psychiatrist driven mad with power, and my confession with impeccable transcription the only remaining source of legitimate inquiry. I had to stop you of course, because I AM the one who cares for Gotham you see. You…you had all of this planned from the start? -Certainly. Now, I'd be willing to trade. None of those events continue, if you would be so kind as to give me details on Batman and everyone he has come into contact with. Oh, I may still kill you, but at least everyone else is spared and you are made to look like some sort of martyr. Sounds like a bargain to me. *deep sigh* I'm scared to say no. -Splendid. Now if you could just. *interrupting* Scared, not unwilling. No deal. -Preposterous! *angry* You simpleton! You are truly going to throw away your career and everyone you know just for the sake of righteousness? Absurd. You're right. I'm way too practical for that. *jet plane and random siren sound effects* Yeah, I think I did the right thing. -What does that mean? It means that the same people you wanted to hurt are the same people that are being protected and rescued by the same people you wanted dirt on -Stop saying “same people!” For someone with alleged intelligence you limit your vocabulary too much. Not a priority. Plus I know it pisses you off. -*realization* You too had this all planned from the start. Eh, not quite. But someone else did. Take a guess. - YOU DO KNOW HIM. This is too much! You will not play me like a cheap fiddle! Oh it's clear you'd be quite expensive and rare. But I'll admit that we're not a good fit because I don't follow the collectibles market. So I'll sign off of your case for now. You were giving me the cold shoulder anyway. - STOP WITH YOUR PUNS *wenk wenk wenk* Ending (52:07) Recommended reading: Penguin: Pain & Prejudice Next episodes: Arcade, Jonah Hex, Mister Sinister Plugs for social & GonnaGeek Network References: Bane episode - Anthony (5:45) Azrael episode - Anthony (5:48) Veruca Salt - Anthony (14:08) “Money, Power, Respect” by the Lox feat. For this show, I talk about Diddy trying to reclaim his clothing brand, man in wheelchair gets shot 9 times in the back by a cop and more. 2021 is over, folks! Thanks for listening this whole year. I'll be taking off and I'll be back early January 2022! Enjoy the rest of your year! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Our holiday interlude continues with a trip to the dark and surprisingly festive underbelly of Gotham City. In Tim Burton's Batman Returns, the Caped Crusader must take on the combined forces of the Penguin, Catwoman, and corrupt business mogul Max Shrek. While Gotham City tries and fails to enjoy a very ritzy Christmas, the Penguin emerges from the sewers alongside the destructive Red Triangle Gang. Max Shrek schemes to mold the Penguin into the ideal mayoral candidate, but Cobblepot has some sinister plans of his own. Meanwhile, Shrek's beleaguered assistant Selina Kyle transforms into Catwoman after a failed attempt on her life. Batman finds himself face-to-face with villains that are unsettlingly similar to him. We hope you'll join us for an action-packed adventure about love, loss, and public relations. Lot's was shocking this week as the show took a detour for an episode to fill out the corners of the city and we discuss it all in our Gotham 508 Review of "Nothing's Shocking". This is a spoiler filled discussion so as always make sure you've watched the episode before listening to the podcast. Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) and Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) meet up with former Detective Dix (Dan Hedaya) Gotham 508 Review "Nothing's Shocking" Synopsis Directed by:Kenneth Fink Written by: Seth Boston Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) 's past comes back to haunt him when two former G.C.P.D. officers are murdered at the Sirens Club. With information from Barbara Kean (Erin Richards), Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) discovers that a shape-shifting Indian Hill escapee called “Jane Doe” is behind the killings. Brought in to the Precinct she escapes and murders Bullock’s former partner Detective Dix (Dan Hedaya). As Harvey take matters into his own hands his partnership with Jim becomes strained as he confesses that he and the victims unethically forced Jane, formerly "Jane Cartwright" (Sarah Pidgeon), to incriminate her mother for killing her abusive father. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) explore the tunnels beneath the city as they attempt to track down the missing husband of an injured woman. But “if you go down to the sewers tonight you sure of a big surprise” as they rescue the woman’s husband they discover a severely disfigured and immensely powerful hybrid-human who was affected by Jeremiah's chemicals. Elsewhere, Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) and Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith)'s plans to escape Gotham look like being torpedoed by Cobblepot’s former accountant Arthur Penn (Andrew Sellon). Suffering from a split personality, Penn is embodied by a ventriloquist dummy, Scarface (also Andrew Sellon), resulting in a confrontation with his former boss that leads to the death of Scarface and the the death of one Arthur Penn. Or is it Killer Croc?!?!?! Your hosts do all of that and predictions! RSS Feed: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/aftershows/gotham-afterbuzz-tv-aftershow/feed/ ABOUT GOTHAM: Gotham is an American crime television series developed by Bruno Heller, based on characters published by DC Comicsand appearing in the Batman franchise, primarily those of James Gordon and Bruce Wayne. The series stars Ben McKenzieas the young Gordon, while Heller executive produces along with Danny Cannon, who also directed the pilot. As originally conceived, the series would have served as a straightforward story of Gordon's early days on the Gotham City Police Department. The idea evolved not only to include the Wayne character, but also to tell the origin stories of several Batman villains, including the Penguin, the Riddler, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, the Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Hugo Strange and the Joker. Things start and end in rather perverse fashion in this minute, folks. We can only apologise on behalf of Mr Cobblepot and Ms Kyle. This is meant to be PG, damn it! Won't somebody think of McDonald's?!? Groupies are harassed and cats are on display today! Last season we had a couple of guest investigators known for their '80s knowledge. This year we're firmly into the '90s, so they can't possibly help us now, right? WRONG! They have joined us in this new decade with their latest project and New Batch too - it's Neil Brown and George Hendricks of The Mogwai Minute podcast! This duo are down to break every golden rule to crack this case! The next episode follows on Wednesday. Same Bat Pod, different Bat Minute! Join us on Facebook at the Bat Minute Listener's Cave! The Bat is taken aback. This claw, this woman, this cat - our hero is having certain... feelings. Elsewhere, the Cobblepot campaign is in full flow now, baby! His most important point to make right now? Well, that he's short, of course! Who wants a tall mayor running things? Jeez! Back, back, back again is a crowd favourite - our anatopistic, world-hopping, dreamer of dreams and author of awe is back to resolve this madness yet again! Yes, Kiri Callaghan, Changeling-extraordinaire, is here to save the day. The next episode follows on Monday. Same Bat Pod, different Bat Minute! Join us on Facebook at the Bat Minute Listener's Cave! IT'S HAPPENING PEOPLE! Bat meets Penguin - master of the skies meets ruler of the seas! Kind of. Cobblepot is on the streets to do good deeds, it seems - he just wants to check that his beloved city is okay. Aww! A beclawed cat comes clinking and cartwheeling into the chaos! Back with the crew is Bat Minute veteran Jack Harvey - writer, artist, cartoonist, Lie Master General. Want to know more about that last aspect? Find out here! The next episode follows on Friday. Same Bat Pod, different Bat Minute! Join us on Facebook at the Bat Minute Listener's Cave! Jimmy attended New York Comic Con and boy are his arms tired. As usual, he got lots of 1:1 interviews and covered as many press rooms as he could. Producer Joe even got in on the interviewing action! In this episode, you'll hear the press room for Gotham with Robin Lord Taylor, Donal Logue, Cory Michael Smith, Chris Chalk and showrunner John Stephens! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Also, get a hold of us! Thanks for listening!
The end is here in our Gotham Season 3 Episode 22 Review for "HeavyDirtySoul" and we discuss our Top Five moments of this Episode. Synopsis for Gotham Season 3 Episode 22 Review HeavyDirtySoul Podcast Directed by: Rob Bailey Written by: Robert Hull Bruce’s conditioning wears off as he is confronted with Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) run-through by his own hand. Spurning the offer from Ra's al Ghul (Alexander Siddig) offer to be his heir Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) uses the waters of the Lazarus Pit to rescue Alfred from death. At the hospital Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) arrives and the tense visit sees her and Bruce’s relationship disintegrate as they both go their separate ways. With Jervis Tetch (Benedict Samuel) in the hands of Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) and The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) they begin to blackmail the city in exchange for Tetch and the antidote. However, Nygma’s obsession with Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) forces him to betray Barbara as he meets Jim and Harvey to swap Tetch for the Penguin. However, the deal heads south as Barbara, Tabitha and Butch interrupt the exchange. In the escape, Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) secure Tetch’s blood for the antidote; and Cobblepot turns the tables in his favour capturing Nygma. Back at the GCPD, Jim Gordon, still fighting the virus, is caught between saving himself and Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin), or joining her and embracing his true-virus-self. Gordon decides to leave with Lee but as they escape through the train station, Bullock intercepts them and urges Jim to remember his calling giving him his badge back with two vials of the antidote. In the train, Gordon injects himself and Lee, freeing them from the virus. Losing Tetch opens the fault lines between Barbara and Butch Gilzean (Drew Powell) and Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas). Butch is shot and Tabitha kills Barbara in revenge. Elsewhere, Nygma breaks free of Cobblepot's handcuffs and believes he has the upper hand but Cobblepot has wised up to the Riddler and goads him into returning to the port. At the docks, Cobblepot’s trap is sprung as Victor Fries (Nathan Darrow) freezes Nygma and in so doing forms a gorgeous centerpiece to Penguin’s new club “The Iceberg Lounge” but, as he tells Ivy (Maggie Geha), it is also as an important reminder to never let love weaken him again. As some normality returns to Gotham, Selina is adopted by Tabitha who is surprised by her skill with her whip. Gordon receives a letter from Lee, stating she is leaving Gotham; and a new vigilante is out in Gotham protecting the vulnerable. On a rooftop high above Gotham Bruce Wayne removes his mask.
