In this episode, I talk about the Groveland Four's false accuser finally passing away after all these years. I explain that fake victims need to be punished severely enough for people to be afraid of making up lies. I also discuss how we need to get the facts straight before we label people "victims" and "perpetrators". Our guests this week are Patty De Biase and Barbara Venkataraman. They are joining Fika with Vicky to chat about recent book banning activity, and its significance. Book banning is a huge topic. Do you start with its history, current events, social impact, or go straight to intellectual freedom? So this is the first in a series of sporadic episodes, I will be sharing on the many aspects of this subject. Patty De Biase - I taught for Broward County, Florida, for 38 years from K to 5th. My favorite was 3rd. I retired during c-vid to take. care. of my new grandbaby. So with a lot of time on my hands, I started to get more politically involved to make sure. people get out and vote. I'm Vp. for the Hispanic Caucus and. secretary for the Weston Democratic Club. I am also involved with the Truth Matters project which is non- party just issues based. WE have been going to all the school board meetings and speaking out from diversity. Whatever the school board throws out there we make sure it's all true or we are confronting them. Barbara Venkataraman, is an author, attorney and moderator specializing in family law, and a Florida resident. Her works include: "The Fight for Magicallus", a children's fantasy; "If you'd Just Listened to Me in the First Place", a humorous short story; and three books of humorous essays: "I'm Not Talking about You, Of Course," "A Trip to the Hardware Store & Other Calamities," and "A Smidge of Crazy", from her series, "Quirky Essays for Quirky People." Barbara's “Jamie Quinn Mystery Series”, is a collection of six books, sure to please any armchair detective. Her nonfiction book: "Accidental Activist: Justice for the Groveland Four", is a memoir she co-authored with her son about lessons he learned while working to exonerate four men falsely convicted of a terrible crime in the Jim Crow South. She has a collection of short stories; “Duck for Cover and Other Tales” and a collection of flash fiction stories: “A Year of Shorts.” She even has a new Young Adult novel out; “Five Fortunes.” You can find Barbara on goodreads, where she answers questions and keeps her readers updated on what's new in her writing world. The Killer Thorn of Gypsy Rose

In 1987, 21-year-old guitarist Leo Schofield was pursuing his rockstar dreams when his teenage wife Michelle was found dead in a phosphate mining pit in Lakeland, Florida. Two years later, Leo was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder he has always denied. Fifteen years after Leo's conviction, previously unidentified fingerprints from Michelle's car matched Jeremy Scott—a troubled teen with an extensive history of violence who lived near the young couple at the time. Jeremy has now confessed to Michelle's murder. Yet Leo Schofield remains behind bars. Bone Valley is a chilling story of murder and the miscarriage of justice. In his three-year investigation, host Gilbert King peels open the layers of this case and uncovers startling new evidence that Jeremy is responsible for yet another murder – his fourth – and one that has remained unsolved...until now. With heartrending clarity and suspense, Bone Valley exposes the catastrophic flaws in the American criminal justice system, documenting the story of these two men in their desperate search for truth and redemption. This groundbreaking true crime podcast series returns King to central Florida, where his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Devil in the Grove led to the exonerations of the Groveland Four. https://lavaforgood.com/bone-valley/ Bone Valley is a production of Lava for Good Podcasts in association with Signal Co. Scott has now confessed to Michelle's murder, yet Schofield remains behind bars. Along with producer Kelsey Decker, King leads listeners on a unique and provocative true crime investigation featuring firsthand accounts from both Schofield and Scott themselves. With heartrending clarity and suspense, Bone Valley unearths new evidence in the case, exposing the catastrophic flaws in the American criminal justice system and documenting the story of these two men in their desperate search for truth and redemption. It's a return to Central Florida for King, whose New York Times-bestselling book, Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America, also took place in the region. His remarkably thorough research for that book led to the 2021 exonerations of the wrongly-accused men known as the Groveland Four. King has written about race, civil rights, and the death penalty for the New York Times, the Washington Post, and The Atlantic.“How does a man spend over three decades behind bars when there are layers of evidence pointing to his innocence?” asks King. “I hope this series answers that question, exposes how our court system got this case very wrong, and helps point to the truth for Leo, as well as for Michelle.” “This truly is a case like no other. Leo Schofield maintains his innocence as he sits behind bars for this murder, while Jeremy Scott confessed but was never charged for it,” said Jason Flom, founder and CEO of Lava for Good. “The state of Florida believes neither of them. We hope that by revealing the parallel narratives of these two men, we will finally expose the truth and bring about the justice that Leo has awaited for over three decades.”To listen to Bone Valley and the current slate of Lava for Good series, find them on all popular podcast platforms or visit www.lavaforgood.com to learn more.

On today's episode of our special series, Momentum: Civil Rights in the 1950s, Sharon continues a riveting conversation with pulitzer-prize winning author, Gilbert King. We pick up with the involvement of J.Edgar Hoover and the case of The Groveland Four, including the political dance Thurgood Marshall did with Hoover to strategically move the Civil Rights movement forward. Often flying under the radar in history, Florida, for some years, was far worse than higher profile areas in the Cotton Belt when it came to violent acts against Civil Rights advocates and the Black community. Florida had the highest per-capita rate of lynching of any state in the country, but as the land of “surf and sun,” it did not fit the narrative of the broader movement of the Civil Rights era that followed Brown vs. the Board of Education. What does “tranquility of the South” have to do with an investigation that was quashed by a U.S. attorney? How did the momentum of a diligent author lead to the exoneration of The Groveland Four 72 years after their arrests? And how did the work of Harry T. Moore and Harriette T. Moore single handedly change the voting demographics, and sacrificed their lives for? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

And at this point, white supremacists didn't need to be threatened in order to kill people. In 1951, pioneering Harry and Harriet Moore are murdered at home, becoming the first civil rights activists to be assassinated during the movement by opponents to their cause. The case remains unsolved decades later, despite a few suspects being likely. And could the attack possibly have links to the case of the Groveland Four two years previously...? King recounts his research into the prejudice in rural Florida in the 1940s and 50s and the horrible miscarriage of justice that followed the false accusations against these four young Black men. Speaker Sprowls and King discuss how "Devil in the Grove" brought awareness to this tragedy and the instrumental role it played in the Florida Legislature's decision to pursue the long overdue pardon and exoneration of the Groveland Four beginning in 2017.

Attorneys presented closing arguments in the trial of the three Georgia men charged with murdering Ahmaud Arbery, yesterday. Now, we wait for the jury to decide whether they'll be convicted. On Sunday night, a man plowed his vehicle into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin. At least five people died and several others were injured in the incident. Police are charging the suspect with five counts of intentional homicide. And in headlines: A Florida judge dismissed all charges against The Groveland Four, President Biden renominated Jerome Powell to lead the Federal Reserve for a second term, and the U.S. was deemed a “backsliding democracy” for the first time ever.
