On December 19 of 1970, the Indianapolis affiliate of the Southern Leadership Conference's Operation Breadbasket held a “Black Christmas Parade” on Indiana Avenue. The parade featured marching bands, floats, and local celebrities. The grand marshal of the parade was the Soul Saint, an Afrocentric version of Santa Claus. The “Black Christmas Parade” was part of a full day of events, that also included a keynote speech from Reverend Jesse Jackson. The day ended with a ”Black Christmas Party” at Foster's Motor Lodge, featuring the greatest funk and soul bands in Indianapolis, including The Highlighters, The Moonlighters, The Turner Brothers, Indy 5, The Perfections, and others. The purpose of the “Black Christmas Parade” was bigger than spreading holiday cheer. A spokesperson for Operation Breadbasket said the parade was created to raise awareness of the services and products available through local Black business owners, and to develop a sense of Black pride in the Indianapolis community. This week on Echoes of Indiana Avenue, listen to a tribute to the “Black Christmas Parade”, featuring music from Indianapolis bands that performed at the event.

In this episode of the Valley Today, host Janet Michael speaks with Niki Foster from the Front Royal-Warren County Chamber of Commerce. The conversation covers a wide range of topics including the significance of Small Shop Saturday, upcoming events, and the importance of supporting local businesses. The discussion begins with a lighthearted exchange about recording on Black Friday and the chilly weather outside. Janet and Niki commend each other for not partaking in the Black Friday madness, instead choosing to support local businesses on Small Shop Saturday. They then transition into the main subject of the upcoming events organized by the Chamber of Commerce. One such event is 'Coffee and Conversation,' which has been running since July and has quickly become a community favorite. It offers informative yet casual meet-ups where attendees can interact with local officials and learn more about the community. Niki shares her excitement for the December 6th event featuring leaders from Warren County Fire and Rescue Services. The conversation also delves into the upcoming Christmas Parade, scheduled for December 7th. Niki emphasizes the importance of timely registration and outlines the logistical challenges of organizing such a large event. Janet also humorously remarks on the ridiculousness of last-minute entries trying to be part of the parade. Following that, they discuss the 'Merry Market,' which will have 48 vendors offering unique, locally-made products. Janet and Niki underscore the value of shopping local not only during the holidays but throughout the year. They mention how buying locally-made products keeps money within the community and helps small businesses thrive. Niki details the various activities happening downtown on parade day, including carriage rides, Christmas classics at Royal Cinemas, and special events at local businesses like Stone Branch Center for the Arts and Artsy. There will also be food trucks and musical performances, making it a full-day event for the community to enjoy. Wrapping up the conversation, Janet and Niki talk about an upcoming Business After Hours event at Royal Cinemas, where donations will be collected for the foster care program. The event will conclude with a free screening of 'It's a Wonderful Life,' making it a festive occasion for networking and holiday cheer.

In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael is joined by Niki Foster from the Front Royal-Warren County Chamber of Commerce and Bret Bement, owner of Play Favorites. Brett elaborates on the one-year anniversary of purchasing the shop, highlighting its unique role as a 'therapy store' offering not just toys and games but an experience that transcends mere retail. He discusses the sense of community they've built and the free hugs from the popular 'Bumpas' - a weighted plush that offers comfort. Janet and Bret exchange anecdotes about the emotional and therapeutic value of toys and games, touching on how even mundane items like a Slinky can transform someone's day. The trio delves into the store's diverse offerings—from educational games to sensory toys and even dinosaur-themed silverware. Bret emphasizes the importance of play for children and adults alike, discussing how the store fosters socialization and creativity through board game nights, Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, and even magic tricks. Niki shares her personal affinity for dinosaurs, revealing her plan to build a Lego flower arrangement featuring a praying mantis. The spontaneous challenge to Bret to list the store's inventory in under a minute showcases the extensive variety of items available, all curated to ensure enjoyment and learning. Janet and Niki underscore the value of shopping local and how establishments like Play Favorites contribute to the community. They discuss the store's involvement in local events, charitable donations, and support for community projects, highlighting the ripple effect of supporting local businesses. The podcast wraps up with fun banter about some of the most-loved items in the store, like the dinosaur silverware and themed earrings made by Bret's wife and store owner, Hannah. Bret also talks about upcoming events and promotions, inviting listeners to visit the store and experience its offerings firsthand. Darrell Brooks is accused of killing six people and injuring dozens more when he drove an SUV through the Waukesha Christmas Parade in 2021. While his alleged motive, if any, remains unknown, a criminal complaint explains that the mayhem immediately followed a domestic incident in what prosecutors may call an anger-fueled rampage. A town tragedy with a defendant representing himself and a judge caught in the middle. Court TV's Ted Rowlands goes from the crime scene to the courtroom in the Christmas Parade Rampage Trial of Darrell Brooks. For more information on the case, Click Here.
