Harold “Hackie” Reitman is one of the most interesting and multi-talented folks I've ever met. In his very “out-of-the-box” career, Hackie has been a distinguished orthopedic surgeon, a professional heavyweight boxer, an author of books and screenplays, a filmmaker, and an advocate, mentor, and entrepreneur for the neuro-diverse community. With all that under his belt, Hackie is humble, self-effacing with a great sense of humor, and I came away thinking someone should make a movie about this guy’s life because it’s so fantastical. As a teen, Hackie developed some skills in basketball and boxing and after high school was accepted into the six-year medical program at Boston University. As a first-year medical student at Boston University, Hackie entered and won the prestigious amateur Lowell New England Golden Gloves Boxing Championship at heavyweight, with all four wins coming by knockout. He was then offered a very lucrative contract to box professionally but turned it down to return to medical school, (and boy, is there a great story behind that)! In 1987, Hackie’s only daughter, Rebecca, age two, required emergency surgery for a brain tumor and it turned out to be a life-changing event for both. Hackie made a pact with God that if Rebecca survived, he’d return to boxing at the then “way-too-old -to-be-doing-this” age of 38 and direct all his prize winnings to children’s charities. (I vaguely remember at that time the media frenzy about “the Boxing Doctor” and his unlikely career change at age 38). Rebecca survived and Hackie went on to fight 26 bouts with a record of 13 wins, 7 losses, and 6 draws. Most impressively, Hackie was knocked down, but never counted out in any bout. Hackie went on to become the founder of a media company, PCE media, and wrote, produced, and directed the movie, “The Square Root of 2”, a full-length film starring Darby Stanchfield from the hit show “Scandal”. The film is based on Rebecca’s struggles with learning disorders while pursuing a mathematics degree at Georgia Tech University. After her graduation, Hackie discovered that Rebecca was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, an illness with which he was totally unfamiliar even as an M.D. So of course he studied up and wrote the book, “Aspertools: The Practical Guide for Understanding and Embracing Asperger’s, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Neurodiversity.Hackie became a huge advocate for the neuro-diverse community, arguing that our brains all work differently and one size does not universally fit all. He is the founder of the neuro-diversity website DiferentBrains.org. which is a repository for his various advocacy, mentoring, interviewing, and video projects dedicated to bringing the neurodiversity community and education into the mainstream.

We have Dr. Hackie Reitman back from DifferentBrains.org on this podcast to discuss why we all need some inspirational stories in our lives to boost our mood. Hackie is the founder of Different Brains, a website that has tremendous resources for all types of brains and is an incredible place to learn and be inspired. Hackie recently published a blog about Hunter Wittrock, a young man with cerebral palsy who trained for months to be able to walk across the stage to get his diploma. Dave and Hackie discuss that story and why others stories just like it help to improve our mood and sometimes get us out of a slump or bad day. Dave and Hackie talk about what they think his motivation might have been and what others can take away from his strong desire to make such an impact for his own life. Hackies discusses why he feels we need these stories in our live and how they help the brain cope with bad days and how they assist us in improving our moods. How can we create these stores for ourselves? Hackie talks about that as well. And we talk some boxing from Hackie’s pro boxing days and some lessons we can all take away from that. Find Different Brains here: https://www.differentbrains.org/ And read Hackie’s blog post here: https://www.differentbrains.org/turning-tough-days-around-the-brain-improving-moods/

We all have “Different Brains” and Annette’s guest this time knows that very well. Different Brains founder Harold “Hackie” Reitman, M.D. takes time out of his very busy schedule to have a wide-ranging discussion with Annette about some of the incredible work the organization does. Different Brains is an organization that has dedicated its resources to advocating and educating about the topic of neurodiversity. Different Brains produces a whole host of content including videos, blogs, and podcasts as well as a regular series called This Week In Neurodiversity. As Hackie explains, they use different medium to reach people with the information that they are seeking. Hackie talks with Annette about his fascinating background as a surgeon, a professional boxer and a filmmaker and how he decided to create Different Brains. When Hackie was a professional boxer, his daughter was battling 23 brain tumors, and Hackie came up with the idea to donate all his earnings to children’s charities. Through this he was able to get lots of publicity for his cause. After his daughter successfully battled her tumors, she attended and graduated college. But when she received a diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome, Hackie decided to launch Different Brains because he felt there was a disconnect between the various communities that worked and advocated for those under the category of Neurodiversity. He and others felt that there could be tremendous benefit to working together and sharing what has been learned to benefit all. He calls this “knocking down the silos”. Hackie also talks on the podcast about many other topics in his interview with Annette including how he got the film The Square Root of 2 made, a movie about a young girl challenged with undiagnosed Asperger’s Syndrome and his other attempts at the movie business. He also chats about how he published his book Aspertools: The Practical Guide for Understanding and Embracing Asperger’s, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Neurodiversity. Hackie brings up the parent’s group Denise’s List which provides tremendous resources for parents of those on the autism spectrum. You can find out more below about that list. https://www.differentbrains.org/denises-list-empowering-parents-children-autism-denise-karp-edb-90/ Learn more about Different Brains and enjoy the endless list of educational content they have created here: https://www.differentbrains.org/
