(Shandong Lu Cai Food Competition)。There were chefs (厨师) from 16 cities in Shandong province who all gathered in 崂山 to showcase their local cuisines (展示当地美食). 山东作为“世界大蒜之都(the garlic capital of the world)”,菜里面的大蒜不会少。 They have so much garlic on them. But luckily, they are all positive shock In America, Chinese food is usually quite Americanized or localized 在美国,许多中国菜肴大多是deep fried(油炸的),而且通常very salty(非常咸)or very sweet(非常甜)。And they are not as diverse (多样化的) as authentic (正宗的) Chinese food.当主播Adrian来到中国的时候,he was like a kid in a candy shop。He was trying everything he could find, 因为每一道菜都与家乡熟悉的味道如此不同、如此独特(so different and unique)。During one of his visits back to the U.S. to see his family It just tasted like basic pork baozi (猪肉包子),which isn't bad, 但这确实不是主播Adrian点饺子时所期待的样子。03. Authentic Chinese Food in US 一家hotpot restaurant(火锅店)让他印象深刻。因为在来中国之前,he had never heard of hotpot。Hotpot is a super common and popular meal in china, 这和美国的食品安全法规(food safety regulations in America)有关系:很多美国地区的餐厅是 are not allowed to serve raw foods (不允许提供“生食”),like chicken and pork,所以hotpot就很难普及了。 主播Adrian有一次还在中餐馆里点了土豆丝,which is not on their menu.04. Food: A Bridge Connecting Cultures and Memories 食物:连接文化与记忆的桥梁主播Adrian有一次和一位特别想体验地道中餐(experience authentic Chinese food)的朋友在中餐馆里点餐,the menu was very huge so they ordered a wide variety of dishes (各式各样的菜品). 这家店所在的城区有不少华人和Asian communities(亚裔社区),and some big universities with many international students (国际生). 无论是在中国的国际都市,还是在美国的华人社区,food really does connect people to places and memories (食物总是能把人和特定的地方或者记忆关联在一起). Do you have any authentic Chinese dishes to recommend?

In this episode, we talk a lot about the job market, which is anything but hot, and its implications for the Fed, which is under pressure. All of the below tend to support President Trump's criticism of Powell being “too late”: weakening job growth this summer (only +22k jobs in August, mostly in health care). likelihood of significant negative revisions this week. unemployment that would be over 5% if not for lower labor force participation. Although unemployment is not an issue (yet), the risk in the labor market is a dearth of new jobs, with the odds of finding a job if you lose on today only 45%, the lowest level in over 12 years. We believe that AI is having an outsized effect on job openings, especially at the entry level. All of these factors, along with a shift away from a focus on inflation by the Fed, support the market's consensus view of a rate cut being on tap for next week, with two or three more likely to follow in quick succession. Historically, this has been a positive for equity markets if (and that is a big if) a recession can be avoided. the Fed has cut rates after an extended pause (like the one we are in now) eight times in the last forty years; four times we avoided a recession, and markets gained, on average, around 15%. the other four times, we entered a recession, with markets typically experiencing a 10-15% drawdown. Although there are some parallels between now and the late 1990s, valuations are not quite as stretched at the top, with the median P/E of the top 10 stocks around 31x versus a 41x multiple in 1999. However, investor allocation to equites is now at 55%, above its prior peak in 1999. We also discuss the reasons why, despite Fed rate cuts, the all important 10-year yield may not cooperate. Chief among these are the lagged impact of tariffs on prices and the relatively high (and growing) level of U.S. government debt. Will the U.S. be forced to suppress yields a la the bank of Japan in order to unlock the housing market, and is that what is causing tempers to flare between members of the administration? In this week's edition of the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas podcast, we talk to Jerrmy Gawthrop, co-owner of Wood Stone Pizza and formerly of the Greenhouse Grill. But first? Food News! Lasang Pinoy is about to FINALLY open in Rogers Get out your records- Sidecar is about to open in Fayetteville Dining in the Dark in Fayetteville? Yes, at the Mockingbird Kitchen! Act fast! Doomsday Coffee opens in Springdale (we think)! A new pop-up opens in Springdale at the Spring Kitchen K-Pot Korean BBQ & Hot Pot opens in Rogers soon. Win dinner for four! Still a chance to get your tickets to Dish benefitting the Arkansas Children's Northwest expansion! Jerrmy Gawthrop has quite the background. The co-owner of Wood Stone Pizza grew up working in the restaurant scene in NWA and started front-of-house. Then he got pulled into the kitchen, and that's where his education truly began. Eventually he would open the Greenhouse Grill, and sleep there. And that's where he started the Roots Festival with others. Roots built into more than a music festival, as they brought award-winning chefs to Fayetteville a part of Roots. It was great until it wasn't. Jerrmy will tell that story. And where did he get the idea for Woodstone Pizza? It was while cooking on a street in a competition – crazy story. And what did they find when they acquired the uptown Woodstone? Even crazier. Yeesh And by the way, do you remember the Most Interesting Man in the World beer ads back in the day? Fayetteville's version just might be Jerrmy. PBS's "Lucky Chow" host, Danielle Chang, has been using food as a tool to promote diversity since her family immigrated from Taiwan to Texas when she was 5, and she eventually turned it into a career! Danielle tells host Rachel Belle which condiment she always keeps in her bag and Your Last Meal listeners call in to confess what flavor enhancers they have sneaked into restaurants, movie theaters and doughnut shops over the years. First Beyoncé sang about having hot sauce in her bag, then Hillary Clinton talked about her spicy stash on the campaign trail. But Emmy-nominated journalist Myra Flynn says the habit of toting hot sauce started out of necessity with enslaved Americans. Season Seven of Lucky Chow premieres May 1 on PBS! 主播:Flora (中国) + 梅莉 (法国) 片头音乐:What Makes You Beautiful片尾音乐:Rather Be欢迎大家来到我们《老外来了》的全新特辑(brand-new podcast special)——“老外请回答!” 《老外来了》全新特辑——“老外请回答!”This is not just a regular chat (普通聊天) between the two hosts. We're taking on YOUR questions Some questions are fun, some are tricky (刁钻的), and some might even make us speechless (语塞的)! Today Maelle will answer three of them with her own experiences, cultural insights (文化视角), and maybe even some embarrassing stories (让人尴尬的故事) along the way! This is gonna be fun! Let's dive into today's questions!Q1. 如果必须选一个——一辈子不吃奶酪,还是一辈子不吃火锅?“No cheese for life or say goodbye to hotpot forever?”This is such a cruel either/or question (非此即彼的问题). It is like choosing between oxygen (氧气) and WiFi!We're making her choose between her French identity and her Chinese soul (法国人身份和中国魂)! Maelle thinks Cheese is part of who she is—they literally have a cheese course (奶酪菜肴) in French meals. It's sacred (神圣的). They are really fans of cheese (奶酪迷). Hotpot, for Maelle, is like group therapy Warm, chaotic (热闹嘈杂的), and comforting (安慰的). So it's hard for her to make the decision.Final answer: “I pick… CHEESE! Sorry, 火锅!”Because she just can't give up cheese. That's a bold move (非常勇)! In France, they take cheese very seriously—they have over 400 kinds! You could say they are cheese-obsessed (奶酪狂热分子)!And when winter comes, they love eating raclette (拉克莱特): hot melted cheese poured over potatoes and ham (把融化的芝士倒在土豆和火腿上). It's like a warm hug from the inside. 用梅莉的话说:“Good cheese is my ultimate weakness (致命诱惑)!”Q2. 你们国家有“多喝热水”这种万能建议吗?“Is 'drink more hot water' just a Chinese thing, or does your country have this magic cure-all (万灵药) too?”In France, they say things like “Take some paracetamol” (吃点对乙酰氨基酚——一种退烧、镇痛的药), or “Drink herbal tea” (喝点草药茶). But no one just tells you to drink hot water—this is uniquely Chinese (中国特有)!When Maelle moved to Australia, she would always use her roommate's kettle to boil hot water. Her roommates were confused and thought it was weird. Every guest who came over noticed she drank plain hot water She had to give mini health lectures (健康小讲堂): "It's good for digestion! It balances your qi...!" (有助于消化,调节气)But no one bought it (没人信). That's when she realized she'd officially become that person—the one who recommends hot water to everyone As Maelle says: "Old habits die hard" (旧习难改)—once something becomes part of your lifestyle, it's really hard to change—even if you move to another country. It's like muscle memory “Which dish did you want to murder most when you first used chopsticks?” (She learned chopsticks from a young age)。But still, some dishes are super tricky. Final answer: “Kung Pao Chicken (宫保鸡丁)!” It's delicious, but the tiny roasted peanuts? Every time she tries to grab one, it's like chasing a slippery little ninja They bounce (跳动) around, escape the chopsticks, even fly off the plate! And when she gets frustrated, she panics (惊慌失措), fumbles (手忙脚乱), and everything just gets worse. It drives her up the wall That phrase means something really annoys you or makes you crazy. In English, you can use it whenever something keeps going wrong and makes you want to scream. Like, “My chopsticks won't pick up this peanut—it's driving me up the wall!” 04.【Fun Challenge】梅莉演技炸裂,一秒变身中国老妈今天的挑战是——让Maelle模仿中国妈妈的经典语录:“穿上秋裤(Wear your thermal pants)音频10分50秒!”But, she has to do it with the right tone (语气).Since Maelle has been in China for a while now, we want to test if she can truly capture the essence (精髓) of a Chinese mom! So Maelle needs to summon(召唤) her inner Chinese mother.Maelle cleared her throat and tried it: “哎呀,孩子!天儿这么冷,赶紧穿上秋裤!”Go even more dramatic—add some disappointment and worry, like you're truly heartbroken that your kid won't listen: “哎呦喂! 不穿秋裤,以后膝盖疼了别哭着来找我!”That's peak Chinese mom energy (真·中国妈妈精髓)!Rate Maelle's performance in the comments! 下期我们还会回答更多超有趣的问题,比如——“为什么外国人这么喜欢晒太阳?”So, make sure to tune in next time! And don't forget to drop your wildest questions in the comments!

It's been five years since the pandemic forced us to wipe down our groceries, binge Tiger King, and pick up hobbies like basket weaving or, in my case, eating 100 pizzas in 365 days. Of course, COVID also notably sent shockwaves through the restaurant industry, and to this day, the labor market still hasn't recovered. What's behind the lag and what are industry pros doing about it? Father Sal is with us to discuss two excellent articles by Adam Reiner on this exact topic. Also on the episode today, seven LA restaurants were added to the California Michelin Guide, which ones are we most excited to try? Listen to find out. Plus, a meal at the number 17 restaurant in the world, an LA food romantic drama unfolds on Instagram, a celebrity chef (Joshua Weissman) deems LA the best street food city in the world, and a couple of Chinese teenagers get a little frisky with a steaming bowl of hot pot.
