Welcome to the Max Out Mindset Podcast. This is your host, Dr. Larry Widman, and my co-host, Coach Jess Knecht. Our guest today is someone who knows all about performing under pressure and achieving greatness. She has had an extraordinary athletic and coaching career. Her journey started as a standout athlete at Georgia Tech University, where she played on the right side and helped her team reach the Elite Eight in 2003. Her coaching career has been equally impressive, with stops at Appalachian State, the University of Miami, and the University of Kansas. As an assistant coach at Kansas, she played a key role in leading the program to its first-ever Final Four appearance. From there, she became the head coach at Texas A&M, where she guided the team to a Sweet 16 appearance. Most recently, she stepped into the professional volleyball world as an assistant coach for the Omaha Supernovas in the Pro Volleyball Federation. She quickly rose to the position of interim head coach and led the team to an incredible inaugural season, culminating in a national championship. That championship was particularly special, as it marked the first professional volleyball league national championship in America. She embodies everything it means to max out with an overall coaching record of 444-172. Bird emphasizes the foundational role of relationships, mental toughness, and authenticity in her coaching approach. She candidly shares the challenges she faced, particularly in navigating role acceptance within a professional league and the importance of strong administrative support. Reflecting on her decision to return for a second season, she highlights the value of relationships and the competitive chemistry within her team as driving factors. As robotics, automation and artificial intelligence (AI) move into more prominent roles in meat processing and other industries, our guest this week is predicting that using virtual reality equipment — think headsets and hand controllers —  are likely to become required so manufacturers can keep up with the competition. Colin Usher is research scientist at the Georgia Tech Research Institute at Georgia Tech University and specializes in VR systems that provide an interface between humans and robotic systems that resemble today's high-end video games. He contends that VR equipment may eventually allow plant workers to do their jobs remotely in air-conditioned rooms instead of the cold, wet and damp floor in a meat processing plant. Usher also believes that companies will need to shift to VR systems and predicts that advances in the technology could ultimately lead to lower implementation costs.

Vicky Michelle is a true entrepreneur. She's a hustler, a healer, a risk taker, an artist, an adventure seeker, and she's currently a private chef for a fraternity house at Georgia Tech University. Vicky joined the show to discuss her entrepreneurial spirit, the businesses that she's grown, how old she was when she realized she loved cooking for people, and how she's raised her visibility and refused to dim her light. We talk about the power of healing that food can be for people, what helped motivate her after she felt stuck, healing from trauma, and the next goals she's striving for. Later in the episode, Vicky reveals how she taps into her creative process, she tells me about a time she hit rock bottom, who her mentors are, a movie that changed her life, and finally, as always, we wrap up with her realest talk. There aren't many people out there like Vick, and she embodies to me everything that is important about entrepreneurship, going for it, not knowing what you don't know and yet pushing on in spite of it all, and ultimately, carving out a path that's uniquely her own. This was a fun one, and I hope you enjoy it. Mark “Zak” Taylor, a political scientist at Georgia Tech University, has a new book that explores the presidents of the Gilded Age, from Ulysses Grant through William McKinley. This period of presidencies is often a forgotten era, since the presidents were somewhat constrained by congressional action taken in the wake of Abraham Lincoln's presidency and then Andrew Johnson's impeachment. But Taylor has another complex, fascinating, and lively story to tell about the presidencies of Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland, Harrison, and McKinley. And tell it he does, in great detail, with extensive qualitative and quantitative data, sources, and information, with a specific focus on the American economy during this time and the roles that presidents played in relation to the changing and diversifying economy. Presidential Leadership in Feeble Times: Explaining Executive Power in the Gilded Age (Oxford UP, 2023) traces the turbulent postbellum American economy, with questions about the gold and silver standard and the “greenback”, with the drive for foreign and domestic investments, western expansion, and the quest to stabilize the country and pay off the debts incurred during the Civil War. The United States, during the Gilded Age, was considered a developing country and a developing economy. And this grouping of presidents had to contend with that as industrialization, immigration, and expansion all transpired during this period. Taylor came to the project because he was interested in getting at the idea of presidential success and the connection to economic wellbeing or health of the country. But the project evolved over time and the research indicated—particularly within this grouping of presidents—that the individual president's vision for the country and the direction he wanted to take it, along with political skills, coalition building capacity, and the ability to instill trust in American institutions were the key components for success, both political and economic. This is a very accessible book, weaving together archival research, historical details, presidential scholarship, and data analysis in clear and lively discussions of the presidents, the economy, party politics, and foreign and domestic policy. Presidential Leadership in Feeble Times: Explaining Executive Power in the Gilded Age will appeal to scholars and students of American political development, political economy, and presidential studies. For anyone who has any interest at all in American history, this is a truly captivating book. Lilly J. Goren is a professor of political science at Carroll University in Waukesha, WI. He was selected to the All-Star Game three times, won five Gold Glove Awards, three Silver Slugger Awards and was both the American League home run and runs batted in leader in 2009. After retiring in 2016, he's focused on spending time with his family in Austin, Texas. He joins Scott Linebrink this week on "Get in the Game" to talk about life after baseball, his charitable efforts that he started during his career and is continuing still, and how his relationship with God is at the center of what he does. Episode Summary:  Everyone knows the sting of physical pain whether it's a broken arm, a toothache, or a torn ligament. Recently we've discussed physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual pain. Perhaps less discussed is Secondary Pain: pain that comes from the words or actions of others, that makes us feel worse when we are already experiencing one of the other types of pain. Join me with my husband, Scott Bengtson, for a discussion on what to do when someone hurts you emotionally. Quotables from the episode: Secondary pain is that painful experience caused by the words or actions of others, either intentional or unintentional, that worsens the pain we already fight. Frequently secondary pain comes in the form of blame or criticism, even if well-intentioned. People often mean well and are well-intentioned and don't realize how what they say or do will be received by the pain sufferer. Secondary pain often results from comments that minimize or shame the pain sufferer such as, “This too shall end,” “Others have it worse than you,” or “What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.” These suggestions that are offered as a panacea for our pain or as a glib dismissal are received in a way that makes the pain sufferer feel inept, incompetent, and guilty. Any consideration of secondary pain must include those instances where others say or do nothing, even if their heart is to avoid saying or doing the wrong thing, because that makes the one enduring pain feel unseen, unloved, and uncared for. We choose whether or not to pick up an offense. Especially since we're talking about being hurt when we are already dealing with pain, forgiveness is crucial in order to avoid complicating our pain. Assume the best, but forgive nonetheless. God reminds us in Romans 12 to never avenge ourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, because vengeance is his. Scripture References: Romans 12:17-18 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Matthew 5:44 “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” Romans 12:21 “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”   Recommended Resources:  The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out to God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson YouVersion 5-Day Devotional Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms   Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the AWSA 2023 Inspirational Gift Book of the Year Award, the Christian Literary Awards Reader's Choice Award in four categories, and the Christian Literary Awards Henri Award for Devotionals YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be Another Good Day Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety's Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety's Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. It's Friday, May 12th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Leah Sharibu spends 6 years in captivity This Sunday, May 14, Leah Sharibu will spend her 20th birthday the same way she spent the last six: in captivity. Leah was just 14 when she was kidnapped by Boko Haram, the Muslim terrorist group, along with 110 schoolgirls from the Government Girls' Science and Technical College in northeast Nigeria. After a month of negotiations between the Nigerian government and the terrorist group, 104 of the 105 girls left alive were released from captivity and returned home to their families. To this day, Leah is the only girl imprisoned, reports International Christian Concern. Why? For refusing to renounce her Christian faith, according to multiple former Boko Haram prisoners who had contact with her. Leah's case has been the subject of worldwide outrage and helps illustrate the way Islamist terrorism affects Christian communities in Nigeria. The Nigerian government, though outwardly sympathetic to Leah's situation, has seemed to do little to rescue her. Leah, a strong Christian, allegedly has been married off to one of her Muslim abductors and is rumored to have two children. It is hard to know her current state because she is not allowed to see her family. Please continue to pray for Leah Sharibu and her family. Pray that the Lord will grant wisdom to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. And pray that Leah will be released. Watch a special live stream about Leah this Sunday, May 14th at 2:00pm Eastern time through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. GOP Congressman George Santos indicted on 13 counts Republican Congressman George Santos of New York, infamous for fabricating his life story, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges he duped donors, stole from his campaign, and lied to Congress about being a millionaire, all while cheating to collect unemployment benefits he didn't deserve, reports The Associated Press. REPORTER: “Why would you apply for unemployment benefits when you had a job making $120,000 a year?” SANTOS: “This is inaccurate information and I will get to clear my name.” Despite the 13-count federal indictment, 34-year-old Santos will not drop his re-election bid nor will he resign. He surrendered his passport and could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Among the allegations, prosecutors say Santos created a company and then induced supporters to donate to it under the false pretense that the money would be used to support his campaign. Instead, they say he used the money for personal expenses, including designer clothes and credit card and car payments. Sir Walter Scott said, “Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.”  And Exodus 20:16 says, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor." NBC Host: Who will “police” Tucker Carlson's show on Twitter? On the heels of former Fox News host Tucker Carlson announcing Tuesday that he's planning a new program to air on Twitter, "NBC News NOW" guest host Tom Costello brought in former CNN host Brian Stelter for a chat about it all, reports NewsBusters. Costello asked a jaw-dropping question. COSTELLO:  “Will anybody be able to police what Carlson says? Or is this the point? It's just a free-for-all?” STETLER: “I think this is the point. It is a free-for-all. It's what Elon Musk wants to provide. This move by Tucker may cement the idea of Twitter as a right-wing website." NFL star urges graduates to get married and have kids And finally, two-time Super Bowl winning kicker Harrison Butker, age 27,  dropped what he called “some hard truths” on graduates of Georgia Tech University last weekend for which he has been praised by conservatives and Christians alike on social media, reports LifeSiteNews. BUTKER: “Studies have shown one of the many negative effects of the pandemic is that a lot of young adults feel a sense of loneliness, anxiety and depression. Despite technology that has connected us more than ever before. It would seem the more connected people are to one another, the more they feel alone. I'm not sure the root of this, but at least I can offer one controversial antidote that I believe will have a lasting impact for generations to come: Get married and start a family! “Having kicked the game-winning field goal in both the AFC Championship and the Super Bowl, I have received a great deal of praise for these successes. And yet all of this happiness is temporary. And the truth is, none of these accomplishments mean anything compared to the happiness I have found in my marriage, and in starting a family. “My confidence as a husband and father, and yes, even as a football player is rooted in my marriage with my wife, as we leave our mark on future generations by the children we bring into the world. How much greater of a legacy can anyone leave than that?” Butker, the father to two young children, added that the wedding band he wears is the “most important ring” he owns, even more than his Super Bowl rings he earned as a teammate of the Kansas City Chiefs. BUTKER: “While I'm still striving to be a better, more virtuous man, I'm confident that with God, and with my wife by my side, I can do more than I could ever have imagined alone.” Psalm 128:3 says, “Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table." Butker's remarks are particularly timely given current demographic trends. According to The Federalist, “fewer than half of U.S. households are comprised of married couples. And the majority of those are households without children. In 2018, more than a third of Americans between the ages of 25 and 50 had never been married, and a quarter of young people may never marry in their lives.” Butler's impassioned defense of traditional Christian values comes at a time when commencement speakers are all too often chosen by colleges to show their support for the woke agenda. Butker, who is one of a handful of high-profile NFL players to openly refuse the COVID-19 shot, blasted today's cancel culture which aims to censor conservative voices. Challenge accepted!  For our last "regular" episode of Season 3 (before our holiday party and best of 2022 shows), we discuss the artists who continue to challenge us, defy expectations, and create uncompromising art.  Some of these artists have such deep catalogues that it can be daunting to take it all in, some may be too esoteric or eccentric to immediately grab you.  But the 25(!) artists that we pick during this episode have one thing in common...stick with them, and their music will reward you handsomely. In other words...you'll come around, Gregg!  On the other hand, there are certain artists who we find immediately appealing...even if it took 40 years, like the Atlanta band Current Rage.  To celebrate the 40th anniversary reissue of their 1982 mini-album Seven Songs on Propeller Sound Recordings (now generously expanded to 15 tracks) is guitarist John Moore, drummer Paul Lenz, and singer/guitarist Oliver Bewley (son of late Current Rage singer Chris Bewley).  It's a powerful rock n' roll story about family, loss, redemption and second chances that you won't want to miss.  It's the Penicillin Sound! Get the Seven Songs reissue at: https://propellersoundrecordings.com/ About Current Rage: Current Rage are a four-piece, post-punk, musical group that played live in the Southeastern United States during the early eighties. They were comprised of Chris Bewley, John Moore, Pat Kirkland, and Paul Lenz. In the landscape of a fertile, burgeoning Athens/Atlanta music scene Current Rage gained notoriety and a loyal following performing with such musical icons as REM, Pylon, Swimming Pool Q's, The Fleshtones, The Bush Tetras, and The Bongos. Eventually Current Rage would headline shows on their own at such iconic venues as Athens, GA's 40Watt Club, Atlanta's 688 Club, Chapel Hills's The Cat's Cradle, Birmingham's The Nik, and Nashville's Frankensteins. Current Rage first formed in 1979 when skaters, Chris Bewley and John Moore, began writing songs together after school on a pair of second-hand guitars. The two first met as early teen-agers having been recruited separately by Mike Maloof, founder, and manager of Atlanta-based Progressive Skate shop. Bewley and Moore traveled the Southeast competing and marketing Maloof's “Equalizer” skateboard decks and “Accelerator” wheels. Eventually, Moore was recruited by the Z-East team, in Jacksonville, Florida to ride professionally for their Z-Flex brand of decks and wheels. While Bewley was recruited by Sabre Skateboards out of northern Alabama to represent their laminated skate decks at competitions and demos. In the summer of 1979 Moore entered his freshman year at Georgia Tech University and Bewley was invited by his older brother Randy to join his group Pylon as they made their way to New York for their first show opening for Gang of Four. During this trip Bewley became immersed in the New York post-punk music scene and was inspired to start a band of his own. Once back in Atlanta Bewley and Moore began writing songs and practicing. The early version of Current Rage was Bewley and Moore on guitar, Pat Kirkland on drums and Norman Hanson on lead vocals. In mid-1980 Current Rage performed their first show in Athens at the 40th Watt Club opening for The Method Actors. Next, they performed at Atlanta's newly opened 688 Club with The Swimming Pool Q's. Current Rage became the “go to” opening act that year at the 688 Club performing several times each month opening for numerous national and regional acts. By the beginning of 1981 Current Rage was headlining shows in both Athens and Atlanta and began venturing out to Charlotte, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Birmingham. Once the band had found their true drummer in Paul Lenz, who they enticed away from the Atlanta underground band, Vietnam, the original drummer Pat Kirkland shifted his focus to lead vocals and supplemental percussion while Hanson left to start his new band Feast of Friends. Current Rage released an indie label E.P. album called Seven Songs on EOD Records in late 1982. Current Rage was known for short catchy post punk tunes dripping with danceable irony as well as darkwave surf instrumentals. “Seven Songs” was produced by legendary Athens-Atlanta engineer, Bruce Baxter. Baxter had engineered the B-52's single, “Rock Lobster”, Pylon's debut album “Gyrate” followed by the debut albums of The Swimming Pool Q's and Love Tractor. Current Rage's album was the first release on Ron Bond's EOD (Entertainment on Disc) Records. “Seven Songs” was recorded in April 1982 at Channel One studios with Bruce Baxter handling engineering and sound mixing and was released in late October. It is highly regarded by record collectors seeking out early eighties DIY releases. The first pressing of “Seven Songs” yielded 400 copies that were sold primarily at Southeastern independent record stores. Garnering significant east-coast distribution from Important Records, the band rushed to press another 500 records within three months of the initial release. Current Rage gained significant regional buzz from college radio stations WRAS, WREK and WUOG among others across the southeast who played songs like ‘Waikiki' and ‘Sweet Torture'. They also released several music videos that were played regularly in Athens-Atlanta area nightclubs and screened on the weekly music video show on Channel 36 WATL in the early-years of the MTV era. Anthony DeCurtis of Rolling Stone magazine wrote, “an enviable and impressive explosion of new music was emerging from the Atlanta-Athens area at this time” in his Rolling Stone magazine feature article charting the explosion of innovative bands coming out of Atlanta-Athens in 1983. He noted Current Rage as “An up-and-coming standout.” Current Rage has shared the stage with such local legends as Pylon, REM, the Method Actors, The Roys, The Brains, The Swimming Pool Q's, Love Tractor, Vietnam, Kilkenny Kats, and the Side Effects. By 1983, they will have also performed with Col. Bruce Hampton's Late Bronze Age, and Tinsley Ellis' Heartfixers, as well as Guadalcanal Diary and Jason and the Nashville Scorchers. Current Rage's lyrics sketched out wry, lyrical observations about pop-culture fads in “Right Side of the Brain” and “Gidget goes Digital” and expressed vivid, realistic, expressions of common psychological experiences in “Sweet Torture” and “Bitte Schӧn [Beat to Shame]”. In some of their most memorable songs they championed mock-anthemic choruses that affirmed ordinary, everyday, phenomena such as living with an aging dog in “My Dog Sam” or scoring some cool shirts at thrift stores in “Bag of Shirts”. Current Rage's distinctive sound is brash, energetic, and rhythmic, showcasing two drone-based guitarists with crunchy, first-position chords strummed beneath chiming post-punk leads on top of fast frenetic drumming. The relative scarcity of “Seven Songs” today suggests the item does not circulate on the marketplace often. The combination of a small batch release plus, eye-catching three-color cover art, and short catchy songs connects you to the ‘golden age' of the Athens-Atlanta music scene. After Current Rage ceased performing each of the members followed different paths. Paul played drums in several successful bands, The Nightporters, Drivin-n-Cryin, and Michelle Malone's Drag the River. In 1983 he founded a successful musical charity, Rat Aid, which raised much needed funds for targeted relief of local area members of the Atlanta music scene. Today, Paul has a successful audio visual production business in metro Atlanta. Pat had a successful modeling and acting career in Los Angeles, later moving to Phoenix. John returned to school eventually becoming a humanities professor at a college in South Carolina where he still teaches today. Chris took up a career in graphic design gaining a position with the United States Printing Office in Washington D.C., a skill he developed designing concert flyers for local bands and clubs in Atlanta and Athens. In 2018 while living in Charlotte Chris succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 57.
