Tim and Dr. Steven Collins conclude their in-depth discussion about Tall el-Hammam's possible candidacy as Biblical Sodom. Do the archaeological remains found during excavations confirm a meteorite airburst over this ancient city? Does Tall el-Hammam fit the chronological and geographical criteria laid out in the Biblical text for Sodom? Did the Israelites camp on the ruins of Sodom before Joshua led them over the Jordan to conquer the Promised Land? All of this and more is covered! Also, please stay tuned for our upcoming interviews with Dr. Titus Kennedy who will be advocating for Bab edh-Dhra as Sodom! ➡️ HELP US FUND THE NEXT FILM!
As we continue our series on theories of Sodom's location, a very prominent archaeological site known as Tall el-Hammam needs to be addressed more fully. This site located to the northeast of the Dead Sea has been proposed by archaeologist, Dr. Steven Collins, and others to be the remains of Sodom, the most prominent of Cities of the Plain destroyed in the book of Genesis. In this episode (part 1 of a 2 part disucssion) Tim and Dr. Collins take a deep dive into the evidence he and his team have uncovered at the site during their many dig seasons. The two also discuss the raging debate surrounding Tall el-Hammam's identification as Sodom as it relates to geography, chronology, and interpretation of the archaeological finds. ➡️ HELP US FUND THE NEXT FILM!

In English, a South Paw is left-handed, but in Hebrew it would be right-handed. Dr. Collins speaks about the use of the Hebrew word "yamin" (יָמִין), in Ezekiel 16:46. Many new English translations translate it as "south". The Septuagent uses the word "dexios" (δεξιός), meaning right hand, or place of honor. Timothy Mahoney and Dr. Deborah Hurn close their discussion on Deb's favored theory for the location of Sodom. The two delve deeper into the important question of whether Tall el-Hammam, believed by some to be Sodom, is actually Sodom or a different Biblical location called Abel-Shittim, potentially linked to Joshua's Conquest. ➡️ HELP US FUND THE NEXT FILM

A @Christadelphians Video: Description: The location of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed by God has two main suggestions, the more commonly accepted one being south of the Dead Sea. Here an examination is made of the archaeological evidence for Tall-el-Hammam, north-east of the Dead Sea, as a possible more likely location using evidence from the Bible in its support. The right time is considered as well as the "right stuff", the artefacts uncovered during the archaeological study of the area. A meteor airburst is proposed as the likely cause of the destruction. # Summary The PRESENTATION by Vernon Dove explores the identification of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. It outlines the criteria for locating these cities based on biblical descriptions, including geographical references, chronological timing, and architectural features. The presenter discusses various theories regarding the cities' locations and provides evidence from archaeological findings that align with biblical accounts, ultimately suggesting Tal al-Hammam as a candidate for Sodom. # Highlights -

She's tired and has been travelling. If she can rest and recover she will be more beautilul."The Wazir Al-Fazi agreed and took the girl to his private palace. She lived there in a private room, eating and drinking, having everything given to her.Her name was Anis al-Jalis.WazirAl-Fazl had a very handsome son.His name was Nur Al-Din Ali.He was charming and had a reputation of being with everyyoung girl he desired. No one was safe from his charisma. She heard about him and wanted to see him.She was curious. One day at the Hammam, she saw him and he saw her.He was instantly enamored with her.He said, "You must be the girl my father bought for me."She unknowingly assumed it to be true and said, "Yes."They embraced and kissed and he slept with her.He realized what he had done and he avoided his parents for two months only coming home to eat and sleep. He would leave early in the morning and return late at night. His Father was upset, but did not want to lose his son.He forgave him gave him the girl to be his own.His father said, he must not have any other wives otherwise to sell her.AI-DinAli and Al-Jalis lived together one year before AI-Din Ali's father died.He devoted himself to a lavish life, entertaining guests and giving away expensive possessions. He ran out of money and went to the door of each of his friends. He thought those people were his friends. No one would answer the door. They avoided him.He was in despair and said to his slave-girl, "What should we do now?"She said that he should take her to the slave-bazaar and sell her.She said if it was God's will they would be together again one day.Her sale price was four thousand five hundred dinars. The Wazir Al-mu'in son of Sawi was at the bazaar that day.He saw Al-Din Ali and was sure that he was selling the slave-girl Anis Al-Jalis because he was penniless.Al-Mu'in offered the sales price.Al-DinAli did not want to sell her to him.The broker sat the slave-market liked AI-Din Ali and told him to grab Anis Al-Jalis and act like he did not intend to sell her, to act like he wanted only to unbind her status as a slave. He then beat up Al-Mu'in, pulling him off his horse and punching him until his clothes and beard were stained with blood. No one dared to stop the fight between a Wazir and Wazir's son.AI-Mu'intold the Sultan what had occurred. The Sultan sent out 40 soldiers to bring Al-DinAli to him.One of the Sultan's servants was Alamal-Din Sanjar. He had been a servant to Al-Fazl long before. When he heard the King's orders, he went in secret to Nur al-Din's home to warn him to run away from the city.Nural-Din fled the city with his damsel. They found a ship that took them safely to Baghdad. They were so tired from their journey. They came to a place called the Garden of Gladness, which belonged to the Caliph Hairun al-Rashid.The keeper of the garden was an old man named Shaykh Ibrahim. He found the two travelers sleeping in the garden, exhausted. He decided not to beat them, instead he let them rest and was kind to them.He brought them food and they requested wine. The old man said he had no wine and that he had not drunk wine for 13 years.Eventually they persuaded him to bring wine and to drink it.Anis Al-Jalis lit all of the candles and sang. The Caliph noticed the Garden lights were blazing, glowing with light. He thought there was an invasion. He was told that Ibrahim forgot to say that he was using the Garden for a circumcision party. When the Caliph heard this he wanted to attend, so the elders and the poor could be honored with his presence at the party. The Caliph climbed a tree and looked inside the Garden. He saw the old gardener Ibrahim drunk with the two young visitors. The Caliph disguised himself by trading clothes with a known fisherman named Karim. He went to the Garden palace saying that he saw the lights and the party atmosphere and was bringing fish as a gift.Ibrahim invited him in.He was asked to cook the fish, and so he did.The Caliph's servants offered to cook the fish for him but he said, "I insist on cooking the fish with my own hands."He brought the deliciously prepared fish to them. They ate, and sang and talked. The travelers shared their story, that they had to run away. The Caliph replied, "I will write a letter to Muhammed son of Sulaymanal-Zayni. When he reads it he will pardon you."They laughed at him saying, "You're a fisherman! Write it so we can see it."The Caliph left the Garden, wrote the letter and changed into his royal Clothes. Then he entered the Garden. When Ibrahim saw him he immediately became sober. He fell on his knees and pleaded to the Caliph for forgiveness. The King pardoned him and told him to take the girl to the palace.Shestayed safely there in her own apartment, with her own slaves.Al-DinAli travelled back to Bassorah and gave the letter to the King.Al-Mu'inson of Sawịsaid to the King, "This is a fake letter. If it was real, why is he coming alone'?"The Wazir al-Mui'n and the King planned to behead Al-Din Alifor his deception. On the day of the beheading, Ja'afar one of the Caliph's men arrived in a cloud of dust.He saved Al-Din Ali and took him back to Baghdad.Al-Mu'in was beheaded.Al-DinAli said that he did not want to be the King of Bassorah. He lived in luxury in one of the palaces in Baghdad with Anis Al-Jails.He was a close friend of the King, enjoying life until the day he died.

The fascinating, true account of the quest for one of the Old Testament's most infamous cities. Like many modern-day Christians, Dr. Steven Collins struggled with what seemed to be a clash between his belief in the Bible and the research regarding ancient history - a crisis of faith that inspired him to put both his education and the Bible to the test by embarking on an expedition that has led to one of the most exciting finds in recent archaeology. Recounting Dr. Collins's quest for Sodom in absorbing detail, this adventure-cum-memoir reflects the tensions that define Biblical archaeology as it narrates a tale of discovery. The audiobook follows Dr. Collins as he tracks down Biblical, archaeological, and geological clues to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, narrowing down the list of possible sites as he weighs evidence and battles skeptics. Finally, he arrives at a single location that looms as the only option: a massive site called Tall el-Hammam in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Challenging the assumptions of academics around the world, Discovering the City of Sodom may well inspire a revision of the history books. Dr. Collins has become a new voice in the controversy over using the Bible as a credible source of understanding the past - and opened a new chapter in the struggle over the soul of Biblical archaeology.Steven Collins, PhD, is among the world's foremost biblical archaeologists. He is Director of theSchool of Archaeology at Veritas International University and serves as Consulting ResearchProfessor in the College of Archaeology, Trinity Southwest University. He is Director and ChiefArchaeologist of the Tall el-Hammam excavations in Jordan, completing 16 seasons. Prior to Tallel-Hammam, Dr. Collins excavated at other sites in Israel and Palestine.A prolific writer, he has produced articles in professional journals and magazines (including BiblicalArchaeology Review) and many books, including Discovering the City of Sodom (Simon & Schuster2013) and the Harvest Handbook of Bible Lands (a Gold Medallion finalist; Harvest HousePublishers, 2019) for which he is co-editor and a principal author. GTI's resident archaeologist Rich Liverance joins this podcast. The relatively new science of archaeology is a common topic on our biblical study tours. Rich shares from his personal experience at the active digs of Abel Beth Maccah in northern Israel, as well as Tel a Hammam in Jordan (the possible site of Sodom). From roping off a site into 5m squares to finding an iron blade, Rich knows what a day on a dig is like! He also reminds us that the Bible interprets the Bible. Archaeology CONFIRMS the Bible, as well as give material culture to the text. For example, the 1993 discovery at Tel Dan of a tablet mentioning the "House of David" confirms King David's existence and impact 150 years after his life; the discovery of a wall or some jewelry would illuminate the lifestyle of the people who lived in David's time. For further reading, we recommend the following resources:The GTI Tours Facebook pageBiblical Archaeology by Amihai MazarUnder Jerusalem: The Buried History of the World's Most Contested City by Andrew LawlerThe Source by James A. Happy New Year! It is now 2024! In years past, the TeHEP team would be headed off to Jordan during January. But, it's the next chapter in the dig. The main focus now is collating and analyzing the mountain of information that has been collected over the last eighteen-plus years! This episode of Troweling Down continues the story of the curious pottery and mud bricks that came out of the ground during the early excavation seasons at Tall el-Hammam. Tall el-Hammam was chosen to excavate as the possible site of Sodom, based not on the destruction evidence, but on the geography listed in the Bible. The idea of it having been destroyed by a cosmic airburst event was hit upon during the first season. Dr. Collins recounts how and why this theory was proposed, based on the evidence coming out of the ground during that initial excavation. Raised in Yemen amidst intense civil turmoil, Ghassan bin Hammam made a life-changing decision to leave for the United States to start a new life with his family. Believing he had left behind the destruction and instability of Yemen, he was unaware that the very conflict he fled would indefinitely separate him from his new home. It's Thursday, July 13th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Protestant challenges in Catholic Italy The Protestant church has been growing for years now in Catholic-majority Italy. However, Evangelicals in the western country still face bureaucratic harassment for operating outside the de facto Catholic structure. Italy's constitution promises religious freedom, but ambiguity on what that means has led to discrimination against religious minorities. Evangelical Focus reports, “Regulations and resulting bureaucratic harassment have led to dozens of churches closing nationwide.” Rapid rise of Portuguese Protestants Meanwhile, the Evangelical church is also growing in Catholic-majority Portugal. The Portuguese Evangelical Alliance surveyed 350 Protestant pastors in the country. Eighty-percent of them reported their churches are growing. And 62% said they are working to plant new churches in the next five years. Much of the growth is recent. Over 40% of Portugal's Evangelical churches started since 2000. Isaiah 9:7 says of Christ, “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.” Iowa's Heartbeat Bill In the U.S., Iowa's Senate and House voted in favor of the Heartbeat Bill on Tuesday night. The bill prohibits the killing of unborn babies after six weeks of pregnancy with some exceptions. The legislation passed overwhelmingly after Republican Governor Kim Reynolds called for a special session. She plans to sign the bill into law on Friday. Inflation dropped to 3% U.S. annual inflation fell to 3% last month, the lowest in two years. The figure has been falling for 12 consecutive months since inflation hit 9% last year. Inflation is still above the Federal Reserve's target rate of 2%. The Fed has raised interest rates by five percentage points since March last year in an attempt to combat inflation. The financial sector expects the Fed to raise rates again later this month. Archeologist: I found Sodom A Christian archeologist reports finding what he believes to be the Biblical city of Sodom. Dr.Steven Collins is the Dean of the College of Archaeology at Trinity Southwest University. He shared his findings with “The Rosenberg Report” recently. Unlike previous research on the subject, Collins started with the Bible's geographic account of Sodom and Gomorrah's location. COLLINS: “When you do the science of Sodom, you go to the text first. Why? Because the Bible is the only place, the only ancient text, that has survived with the name Sodom in it. The detailed geography about it and the other cities of the plain. That has to be dealt with as a primary text.” This led Collins to the Tall el-Hammam archeological site in the Jordan River Valley. There Collins' team uncovered a series of large and wealthy ancient cities. Pottery from the dig appeared to have been melted, in keeping with the Bible's account of Sodom's destruction by fire. In a peer-reviewed paper, Collins previously argued that the site was destroyed by a meteoritic airburst. Genesis 19:24-25 says, “Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens. So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.” Worldview listeners weigh in from Florida and South Carolina Worldview listeners continue to email me about why they like the newscast at Adam@TheWorldview.com. THE BIBLE tells us that father Abraham died at the age of 175. How can we reconcile that with science without losing our belief in the inerrancy of scripture? Dr. Craig Olson, Dean of Biblical Studies at Trinity Southwest University, explains that the problem is not the number, it's the difference in the way numbers were used in the ancient Near East compared to today. In a nutshell, people 3,500 years ago simply did not record history and interpret numbers the way we do in the 21st century AD. Dr. Olson also explains why Tall el-Hammam, an archaeological site eight miles northeast of the Dead Sea, is far more likely to be ancient Sodom than the traditional location, Bab ed-Dhra, southeast of the Dead Sea.

DAVID ASCENDS to the throne in Jerusalem, and we recount the history of Israel, including some startling examples of warfare in the unseen realm, in the psalms accompanying our study this week. First, we discuss the Jebusites and the city of Jebus, which apparently was the area around the stronghold of Zion, which is the City of David—the area just south of the Temple Mount. “Jebus” means “threshing floor,” from a verb meaning “to tread down,” as in treading out the grain. In the ancient world, as Sharon wrote in Veneration, threshing floors were believed to be portals to the spirit realm. This is an interesting connection to the Hurrian people, relevant because Araunah, owner of the threshing floor on Mount Moriah, is not a name but a title that means “lord” or “king.” The Hurrians believed that gods of the underworld, including spirits of the dead, had to be summoned from the underworld in an underground pit called the abi, from which the Hebrews got the word ôb (“medium”). It just happens that there is a cave directly below the Foundation Stone on the Temple Mount called the Holy of Holies by the Crusaders and the Well of Souls by Muslims. We also discuss the cryptic reference to the “Ariels of Moab,” although the ESV renders it “heroes of Moab” (1 Chr. 11:22). In the King James, ariel is translated “lion-like,” based on the Hebrew ari (“lion”). So, ariels are literally “lions of God,” although “lions of El” is more likely, given that they were from Moab, where Yahweh was not normally worshiped. What are those ariels? We don't know. There's an entry for ariel in the Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible, and it doesn't give a conclusive answer. We can only guess, but based on the Septuagint, which was translated into Greek from an older Hebrew manuscript by about 200 BC, the best reading might be, “[Benaiah] struck the two sons of Ariel of Moab.” In other words, as disappointing as it may seem, it's likely there were no “lion-like men of Moab,” just two warriors from Moab whose father's name was Ariel. After a celebratory psalm, Psalm 133, we read the important Psalm 106. This is where we find one of only three mentions of demons in the Old Testament. It's a translation of the word shedim, a type of territorial spirit depicted in the ancient Near East as winged bulls—like the giant statues of protective spirits found outside the palace of the kings of Assyria now on display at museums around the world. We also dig into Psalm 106:28–29, a passage that explains why God sent a plague against the Israelites while they camped at Shittim. The worship of Baal-Peor (“lord of the opening to the underworld”) involved eating sacrifices offered to the dead. We've recently learned that scholars since the 1940s believe that it's possible Shittim was not the Jordan valley across from Jericho, but might have been the 80-acre site on the hill called Tall el-Hammam—ancient Sodom. In other words, the tabernacle may have been directly over the site of the destroyed temple in Sodom. TRAVEL WITH US TO TÜRKIYE! A large city that just happens to be where the Bible places Sodom was destroyed by an air burst in the Middle Bronze Age—just when Abraham would have been in Canaan. Dr. Phillip Silvia is the co-author of a peer-reviewed paper that stirred up a lot of controversy in September of 2021 by describing a cataclysmic event over the north end of the Dead Sea about 3,700 years ago comparable to the Tunguska blast in 1908. Dr. Silvia is the Director of Scientific Analysis at Tall el-Hammam, an archaeological site in Jordan east of Jericho, about 8 miles northeast of the Dead Sea. He tells us why the evidence on the ground aligns with the Bible's description of the destruction of Sodom. Help us to Build Barn Better!
