Have you ever stopped to think about your breath? Most of the time, we don't give it a second thought, yet it's one of the most astonishing behaviors our bodies perform. From the moment we're born until our final breath, our respiratory system quietly and efficiently drives the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide—a process that keeps us alive for over a billion breaths in our lifetime. But what if I told you that breathing is so much more than just keeping us alive? Ed Harrold blends the fields of neuroscience and the wisdom of contemplative traditions into effective strategies to improve health, performance and overall well-being.  Ed's fluency in mindfulness-based strategies combined with the belief in the human potential gives him the depth and understanding to meet individuals and group needs across industries and platforms.

Ed Harrold, Author, Speaker, Leader, Coach By Ruth Marion, Editor, The Sleep Forum In this podcast, Ed Harrold, Health and Performance Coach, discusses the role of proper breathing for optimal health, well being and sleep. Ed Harrold is author, motivational speaker, inspirational leader, coach and educator. Marion, Editor of the Sleep Forum says "he is one of the most fascinating people I have ever podcasted with." Harrold tells us how he has always had a passion to "be great" in whatever he set out to do and decided his purpose was to share that with others. He became a "breathing expert" and started his company GO BE GREAT that now supports healthcare, athletes and corporations. Harrold tells the listeners that he provides CE training to healthcare professionals on "the importance of mindful movement of the body to reduce stress and anxiety and produce peak performance." He works with corporations to keep employees "happy, healthy, loving joyful, creative, intuitive and working at performance in the mind while keeping the blood pressure down." Harrold also trains athletic teams and individuals so they can perform at peak levels and win medals but "it all revolves around controlling the breath." Harrold tells the listeners more about breathing and how it has a "dual switch". Breathing can occur naturally and without thought, of course. However, if you want to consciously focus on your breathing you can. And by controlling the length, depth and pace of your breathing you can tell your brain what is it you want to accomplish. By breathing thoughtfully, we access the mind so we can focus on what we want to occur at that moment in life. Harrold stresses the importance for humans "to stop the habitual shallow mouth breathing and hyperventilation we see in our culture. It robs our body of energy and leaves us weak." Harrold reminds us that we are all born nasal breathers and were given these nostrils for a reason. Nostrils are built in ventilators and that help prevent airborne pollutants, pollen, and viruses from entering the temple of the body. Breathing through the nose does more than filter particulars we don't want in our bodies. It also helps us work the largest muscle in the body - the diaphragm - which also help us keep our spine strong and erect. Harrold recommends starting the morning off with a few minutes of just nasal breathing. Remember the exhale should be longer than the inhale. Starting the morning out with controlled breathing and gratitude is so important as we plan to move through another amazing day. When it comes time to sleep, sit on the edge of the bed and inhale and hold for two counts and slowly begin to bring a parasympathetic response into the body. Use your mind to set in motion what you want to occur. We hope you enjoy the podcast. To get a copy of his book or for more information about Ed, please click here. You're allowing the body and the wisdom of the body, whether it be the upper abdomen or the neurons in the heart, the opportunity to interact with the film that you're watching in your mind. So, when you have the ability to pause with your breath and feel your intention, you're taking your intelligence to a whole other level that's well above the normal dialogue of folks who are disconnected from their breath." - Ed Harrold   Links From Today's Show Organifi Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes 290 Dan Brulé M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Ed TV Life With Breath by Ed Harrold Ed Harrold Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube LinkedIn   About Ed Harrold Ed Harrold is an author, motivational speaker, inspirational leader, coach, and educator. Ed Harrold is an expert on mindful breathing strategies to improve health and performance. With the current levels of stress and how this is playing a role in creating sickness, pain, and disease, breathing is one of THE most powerful tools we have in regulating our autonomic nervous system. Ed wrote a book, Life With Breath IQ + EQ = NEW YOU, in which he reveals the art, science, and application of yoga breathing for improving mental, emotional and physical health.Ed blends the fields of neuroscience and the wisdom of contemplative traditions into effective strategies to improve well-being, which from my experience in corporate America is much needed more than ever. I had the pleasure of an in person interview with Ed Harrold at the Inaugural FACE Conference in Washington DC this year. FACE is an organization that helps bring health care providers together and teach the screening of airway disorders, and Ed was there to motivate the group and teach us how to better take care of ourselves so that we can continue to help others. This is a great interview packed with tips on how to help stall aging, deal with stress, help our children’s health, get the most out of a workout and for our healthcare workers, tips on wearing a mask and having a clean nasal passage. He explains how you can control your breath to conserve energy both physically and mentally. Physically, when we control our breath, we can control our heart rate which then helps control blood pressure. Emotionally, when blood pressure is controlled, the brain can turn down the fear centers and turn up the learning centers When the brain senses relaxation it helps to burn fat and save glucose. He helps us learn how to get more out of a workout with less time and less energy used. Ed shares what happens to the body when someone mouth breathes during exercise. Pure mouth breathing burns sugars, taxes the immune system and your body has to work hard to get rid of the excess acid and bacteria that gets stirred up from over oxygenation during exercise (I didn’t even know that was a thing before this, but WOW)!! Nose breathing during exercise will help strengthen the diaphragm which helps with good posture and amplifies the vagus nerve get most out of rest and digest. He encourages us to use nasal breathing and exercise to help remove toxins and help with gut toxicity. He explains that exercise is inflammation reduction, but when you breathe too fast and too hard, your body increases inflammation. Taking in less than 12 breaths per minute helps keeps the body in fat burning mode We talk about what type of workout is best and how to prepare for it not only with working out, but also with everyday life. He shares about how to move through stress without becoming stressful and how to not get bogged down with things. He shares how to transition from mouth breathing to nose breathing with things like breath retention in cycles which helps you shorten the amount of time it takes to recover normal breathing patterns. I share my challenge with nasal breathing while cycling and the frustration of learning what to do with all of that extra fluid. Ed explains what toxins are being released from my body during that process and encourages me to keep going through training! For professionals that wear masks, Ed shares some tips his tips for having a clear nasal passage. We talk about how how to help calm before a dental appointment (practice this at home multiple times before visiting the office) Have some quiet time before the appointment. Slowing down the breath on the inhale Exhale longer than the infale Pause at the end of the exhale Towards the end of the interview we talk about how to help children through this type of breathing and how to help children. His book “Life With Breath: Iq + Eq = New You” is filled with tips and tricks to help calm and center our children and enjoy more family time together. I wished this interview could have gone on forever, Ed has amazing insight, I hope we are able to get him on the podcast again soon!
