From wiki: “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover is a 1989 crime drama art film written and directed by Peter Greenaway, starring Richard Bohringer, Michael Gambon, Helen Mirren and Alan Howard in the title roles. An international co-production of the United Kingdom and France, the film's graphic violence and nude scenes, as well as its lavish cinematography and formalism, were noted at the time of its release.”You can watch the movie here: https://archive.org/details/the-cook-the-thief-his-wife-her-lover-peter-greenaway-1989-1 Also discussed: Daughter of Darkness (1948), The Visit (1964), Mike Leigh's Naked, Lars von Trier, vertical content, Studio Ghibli AI, sound stage aesthetics, and more. durée : 00:03:21 - Le Regard culturel - par : Lucile Commeaux - Le film de Mike Leigh, mettant en scène une femme dont l'existence est entièrement régie par la colère et la douleur, sorti mercredi dernier au cinéma, est d'une beauté et d'une radicalité rare - une radicalité à côté de laquelle l'amertume tranquille de "A Real Pain" est un peu fade.

As Mike Leigh's five-decade career takes centre stage at the Paris Cinémathèque for a retrospective, the British filmmaker speaks to Eve Jackson about 50 years of making movies, from the raw intensity of "Naked" and the jubilant optimism of "Happy-Go-Lucky", to historical storytelling in "Peterloo" and "Mr Turner". With accolades like the Palme d'Or for "Secrets & Lies" at the Cannes Film festival and the Golden Lion for "Vera Drake" at Venice, at 82 Leigh continues to illuminate humanity's complexities with his latest film "Hard Truths".

Simon Morris accepts that, for all the hard work of everyone on a movie, most people are just looking at the actors. Three character studies this week, including Mike Leigh's Hard Truths, based on weeks of actors' improvisations… Black Bag, in which a spy investigates six possible traitors, including his own wife... and the last – and some say the best – of the Six Wives of Henry the Eighth, Catherine Parr in Firebrand.Go to this episode on rnz.co.nz for more details

¿Anora? ¿Cónclave? ¿The Brutalist?

For our Valentine's Day 2025 episode, we plunge deep into the nature of relationships by discussing two films whose romantic pairings are arguably not relationships at all: Spike Jonze's Her (2013) and his sometime collaborator, Charlie Kaufman's I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020). Isolation, loss, misogyny, male fantasies, hope and despair: we've got all of the Valentine's goodness for you. We all have our favorite filmmakers whose work we'll seek out every time they release a new movie. On this week's show, Dan Webster, Nathan Weinbender, and Mary Pat Treuthart discuss a trio of movies—at least two of which are considered, by many, the work of master filmmakers. The first is “Hard Truths,” the latest by UK writer-director Mike Leigh. They follow that with “Presence,” directed by Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh. And they finish with “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” written and directed by Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof.
We welcome director Mike Lee back to the show. He talks with us about his recent film Hard Truths and what it was like to reunite with actor Marianne Jean-Baptiste on the project. He also tells us about how he reacted to reading one of the first rave reviews he received as a filmmaker.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Our latest guest on Soundtracking is composer Gary Yershon, who joins us to reflect up 3 decades of collaborations with Mike Leigh, and more specifically Mike's latest movie, Hard Truths. Starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michele Austin, and David Webber, the plot follows the plight of a depressed and nay-saying woman and the relationship with her jovial sister Chantelle. Gary is absolutely fascinating on Mike's process when it comes to both filmmaking and music - so this is well worth a listen.
David is joined by first-time guest Ethan Magnan to discuss Leigh's first made-for-TV film, and we also talk about Hard Truth's, his most recent release from 2024.
