This was an interesting film to have as a first watch. Charles selected this one and it was one of the most tension filled but intoxicating films I've ever seen. The performances are incredible throughout and we have a definite 'Oscar rage' segment because of it. off-topic rants include: my first time watching 'Cool Hand Luke' and how I've never seen E.T.---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Sometimes, you avoid watching a film, or the work of a particular director, for a long time, making assumptions that you won't like it. Then you take the plunge and watch one of their top-rated films, fall in love and go back and devour their entire back catalogue.Secrets and Lies is not that film.Mike Leigh's award winning drama does have a lot to offer with a stellar performance fromBrenda Blethyn as a mother reunited with the daughter she gave up for adoption, but I'm sure everyone on set had a better time making it than we had watching it
On today's show a British slapstick comedy that makes you laugh and think about the chaos of life. Then, secrets and lies in literature by women and non-binary writers. Also, a Berkeley artist reflects on her art and life lessons she learned from having cancer. We close with details about our pre-Halloween storytelling event "Creepy Tales."
We returned to the realm of Mike Leigh on today's episode, with Secrets and Lies. We talked about the family melodrama in all its tragicomic glory – emphasis on tragedy in the film, comedy in the discussion. Then, I opened up a pack of Beatles trading cards from the 90s to celebrate Mike Leigh's United Kingdom. email us at extendedclippodcast@gmail.com with your questions to be answered on the air and get an extra episode every week for $5/mo -- patreon.com/extended_clip

If anyone in America was still thinking that Trump's ties to Epstein were a nothingburger, Trump's own behavior this week has probably disabused them of that notion. His panicking and flailing around sure seem exactly like how a guilty man would act. And the sudden firing of Jim Comey's daughter, Maurene—who worked on the Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell cases at the DOJ—isn't helping to tamp down the conspiracy theorizing. Meanwhile, Tulsi and Kash are trying to ferret out the unfaithful, and there are still adults in the room when it comes to the Fed. Plus, our nuclear command and control system was organized around the assumption that we would have a sane president, not somebody who has psychotic fantasies about the Unabomber. It was just one episode ago when Dawson thought he'd discovered a link between Eve and Jen, but that's not the titular secret -- it's about Gale and therefore much more boring. Jen wouldn't have time to deal with the bombshell of a possible half-sister anyway: as Capeside's latest Homecoming Queen, she has the responsibility of...planning a gala for fifty years' worth of past Queens? When Jen visits apparently the oldest Queen, Miss Constance Freckling (K Callan!) to try to weasel out of it, she has a bee-facilitated interlude with Henry, aka Miss Freckling's handyboy "Hank." Pacey is keeping busy enlisting members of the police auxiliary to help turn the Potter cottage into a B&B, but drops everything when Andie calls Joey crying that Rob committed sexual misconduct against her, but then won't agree to report him to the authorities. Joey's like, "Hmmmmmmmm." We're like, "Uuuuuuuugh." It's no secret OR lie that we've brought you a new episode -- listen now! JOIN THE AWT CLUB

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Patti Frye Meredith, author of the book South of Heaven. Patti's debut novel came out late in life and for her, that's right on time. She could not be happier. She grew up in Galax, Virginia. Most of her stories are set in her beloved Blue Ridge Mountains, but South of Heaven takes place in the North Carolina Sandhills, in Carthage where her family's roots run deep. Please know that the Carthage in South of Heaven was born from long ago visits to see her grandmothers, a Carthage formed from hazy childhood memories that have become more imaginary than real. If you know the real Carthage, she apologizes for misplaced landmarks and fictitious churches. After living all over over the South—Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana—she and her husband, Lee, have settled back in Chapel Hill with their Springer Spaniel, Maggie. Nothing could be finer. In my book review, I stated South of Heaven is a contemporary family fiction that is filled to the brim with amazing characters, as well as a delightful and though-provoking storyline. In fact, if you have family - and we all do - you'll relate to miscommunications, slights, white lies, bold-faced lies, and reinventions of the past that often occur between those we love. Fern made a poor choice when she was barely accountable for such things and has lived with the consequences every single day since. Except for her son, her aunt, and one friend, she has kept to herself, hoping to somehow atone for her sins. Her sister, Leona, on the other hand, seems to have it all, moving beyond their rotten childhood. But what happens when truth - old and new - becomes headline news? I love this story because it is one of redemption and love. We all make mistakes. We all try to cover those mistakes up, usually with disastrous results. We all find a way to love family, despite it all. This is a wonderful novel, and I highly recommend it. Writer and resident Gilbert & Sullivan expert Julia Sirmons joins to discuss Mike Leigh's 'Topsy-Turvy', a story of the aforementioned musical duo and the production of one of their most popular shows, 'The Mikado'. It's a film that feels at once like an outliler in Leigh's career up to that point (his first film not set in contemporary working-class London) and a pitch-perfect culmination of many of his career-long explorations. We begin with a discussion about the legacy of director Mike Leigh, his unusual method for drawing brilliant performances from his ensemble of some of the very best British actors, and his trademark style and narrative construction. Then, we unpack the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, exploring Topsy-Turvy's commitment to authenticity in its recreation of 19th century English theater culture, and the wise decision to focus the film on a particularly unstable moment in the long collaboration between the wordsmith and composer. Finally, we discuss the film's evocation of art and its production process, emphasizing the granular repetition of the work as well as the undergirding capitalist mechanics that necessitated performers assume a strong identity as a collective labor force. Chris Thomason just graduated from the University of California Los Angeles a few years ago and is currently a case worker in social work working with migrants going through citizenship as a translator. Chris was relinquished at birth, adopted at 4 years old, relinquished again 10 months later when the adopted father died suddenly. By the time he reached 11 years old I had been moved 5 times. Never having had a father, he count 7 mothers that it took to get me to high school graduation. Chris married the daughter of the last family who raised him after high school. They were married for 25 years and have 2 great sons from that relationship. After reuniting with his birth family 20 years ago, he found out the state of California has no record of his birth. Therapy has helped him come to a realization he was no longer obligated to hold so many secrets and lies and “came out” as a gay man living my truth in 2009. We're taking a little break over Summer and using this time to spotlight some of our favourite true-crime podcasts.Introducing... Hoaxed, the new series from Alexi Mostrous and Tortoise, who brought you Sweet Bobby. In 2014, two children told police a shocking story: that they were being abused by a Satanic cult; a cult headed by their father and by parents and teachers at their school in the wealthy London suburb of Hampstead. The story was a lie. But on the internet, that didn't matter.Hoaxed is an investigation into one of Britain's most serious-ever conspiracy theories. A story about a modern-day Satanic panic; about the victims whose lives were destroyed and about the conspiracists who spread the lie around the world. Oh, and it's about our hunt for the perpetrators - the people who forced the kids to lie - the ones who started it all.You can listen to the rest of Hoaxed, wherever you get your podcasts.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/australiantruecrime. Amanda returns from the DR divorced and in a great mood...until she learns that Sydney's employment was a condition of her settling her lawsuit. Sydney is suspicious about why Amanda is putting so many D&D resources behind the launch of Kyle's stupid club, while Amanda is greedily jealous of Craig's relationship with Sydney even though Amanda didn't even want him when she could have easily had him, and just regular jealous that Kyle hired Jennifer to tend bar at the club without running it by Amanda first. Colleen comes back to town upon the very predictable end of her marriage, bringing David to spend some time with Jake before Colleen and David move out of state; Alison gets just as predictably bent out of shape about it, given that she was already worried that her infertility was denying Jake one of his longest-held life goals. Billy eludes the cops to get Jim his cash, only to learn there's yet another stipulation: Jim isn't leaving town without Sam. This finally leads Sam and Billy to come clean to the cops...but will they have done so in time? Michael and Taylor enact their plot against Peter, causing Megan to become suspicious about Michael's possibly cheating on her (again) with his partner's wife. And Matt and Chelsea are still here, spinning their wheels. We are telling the absolute truth: we've brought you a new podcast on "Secrets And Lies And More Lies"! JOIN THE AWT CLUB

What information should a president keep secret? Recently, we've seen revelations about former President Trump's removal of classified materials and a tense exchange about the Biden administration's handling of intel on Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Heather and Joanne connect these current controversies to historical debates about the balance between statecraft and transparency, from President Adams' disclosure of the XYZ Affair, to President Grant's ill-fated play to annex San Domingo, to President Eisenhower's admissions surrounding the U2 incident. Join CAFE Insider to listen to “Backstage,” where Heather and Joanne chat each week about the anecdotes and ideas that formed the episode.
