We're so excited to release our interview with Shattered Glass director Billy Ray, who was kind enough to indulge all our questions about our favorite movie, like:What happened between the scene where Chloe Sevigny confronts Peter Sarsgaard for firing Stephen and the next day, when she leads the team in applauding him for his brave decision? Where does Shattered Glass rank in the pantheon of movies Ray's written over the course of his career, which include blockbusters like The Hunger Games and Captain Phillips? And why does Ray think Stephen Glass kept digging himself deeper and deeper, inventing new lies right up until he was fired for fabricating dozens of stories?Billy Ray was a great sport, although he did give us shit for interviewing Adam Penenberg, the reporter who first busted Glass in a story for Forbes Digital Tool, before him. "I cannot understand why I wasn't your first fucking guest," he told us—"Who the hell did you interview before me? The three grips?" We hope you'll enjoy listening to our conversation with director Billy Ray as much as we enjoyed recording it. Hosts: Josh Feit and Erica C. BarnettEdited by: Erica C. Dana and Tom with returning guest, VP Morris (Award-winning thriller and horror writer and podcaster; vpmorris.com, @teawriterepeat on IG and X, The Dead Letters Podcast) discuss American Psycho (2000) for its 25th Anniversary: written and directed by Mary Harron with Guinivere Turner, cinematography by Andrzej Sekuła, music by John Cale, starring Christian Bale, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Reese Witherspoon, and Chloe Sevigny.Plot Summary: American Psycho follows Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), a wealthy and successful New York investment banker in the 1980s, whose polished and charming exterior hides a chilling secret: he's a violent, unhinged killer. As his grip on reality begins to fray, the story delves into themes of consumerism, identity, and moral decay, leaving us questioning what is real and what exists only in his fractured mind.Guest:VP MorrisAward-winning thriller and horror writer and podcaster;vpmorris.com, @teawriterepeat on IG and X, The Dead Letters Podcast;Previously on Scream (1996), The Shining (1980), and Rear Window (1954)Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Guest Introduction02:21 Casting and Background for American Psycho04:13 Relationship(s) with American Psycho06:57 Dad, Did You Like the Film?13:43 What is American Psycho About?25:51 Plot Summary for American Psycho26:29 Did You Know?28:52 First Break29:35 What's Happening with VP Morris?31:30 Best Performance(s)39:43 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)49:36 Second Break50:14 In Memoriam53:34 Best/Funniest Lines59:14 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:07:05 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:13:21 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:17:25 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:22:12 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:26:41 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:27:28 Further Discourse01:36:37 Remaining Questions for American Psycho01:53:36 A Thank You to VP Morris and Final Thoughts01:56:36 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the...

My guest today is a Gen X legend and someone I've been a little bit obsessed with ever since I saw her star in the definitive (late) 80s movie, Say Anything. Ione Skye. There was a time when It seemed like if there was a hot young actor - John Cusack, River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves - she got to snog them on screen. (I know, shallow, much.) Ione has spent her life in the centre of the Venn diagram of film, music and celebrity. The daughter of 60s superstar Donovan, she famously dated Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Anthony Keidis finding herself both babysitter and breadwinner at just 16. She followed that with an ill-fated marriage to Beastie Boy Ad-Rock (Adam Horowitz). But there is so much more to Ione than all those male name drops. She has starred in some of the most significant movies of their generation. She has worked with the likes of Sofia Coppola, Chloe Sevigny, Lena Dunham and Madonna. She's written children's books, directed short films and is an accomplished painter. Not to mention podcaster. (She hosts the podcast Weirder Together with her partner, Ben Lee.) Oh, and I do just have to say that as a child she only lived next door to the iconic writer Eve Babitz! Anyway It all adds up to one fascinating tumultuous story. One she's addressed extremely candidly in her new memoir, Say Everything. See what she did there? Ione joined me from LA to talk about growing up in the 80s and 90s, being a nepo baby before nepo babies were a thing, having it all, losing it all and getting some of it back, what she's learnt from her Gen Z daughters and finally coming into herself in her 50s. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Say Everything by Ione Skye and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. Are You Mad At Me? Episode 2: We Talk to Adam Penenberg, Who Uncovered the Deception at the Heart of "Shattered Glass"

Check out a preview of the latest episode of Are You Mad at Me?, the podcast about the movie Shattered Glass hosted by PubliCola co-founders Erica Barnett and Josh Feit. Shattered Glass, starting Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard, Chloe Sevigny, and Steve Zahn (among many other names you'll recognize), is about a journalism scandal in the late 1990s in which a reporter, Stephen Glass, was found to have fabricated dozens of stories for The New Republic, Harpers, and many other traditional media outlets. Our guest for this month's show, Adam Penenberg (portrayed by Zahn in the film), was working for an early online outlet called Forbes Digital Tool when his editor, Kambiz Foroohar, demanded to know why he'd been scooped by Stephen Glass on a story about teenage hackers. As we now know, the story was completely fabricated—and Penenberg was the one who unraveled the fraud. In our interview, Penenberg tells us what it was like to uncover the story and reflects on what it was like to be a reporter for a digital startup going up against a venerable institution like The New Republic. He also offers his thoughts on why Glass decided to fabricate stories instead of just reporting them, and tells us what it was like talking to Steve Zahn as he was developing his character for the movie.Listen, like, and subscribe to Are You Mad at Me? on Apple or wherever you get your podcasts.Send us a text! Director Mary Herron and her co-screenwriter Guinevere Turner did what 'American Psycho' author Bret Easton Ellis thought was impossible: made a film of his controversial, considered-unfilmable 1991. novel.  And the lens through which they espied Patrick Bateman proved exactly the right way to gain something meaningful out of what, frankly, is a pretty unreadable and repetitive novel. The astonishing lead performance from Christian Bale catapulted him to the stardom and rarified air he continues to occupy as an actor today.  And the performance is a wonder to dissect, if you'll pardon the pun. Featuring a wonderful assortment of supporting actors like Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, Justin Theroux, Reese Witherspoon, Reg E. Cathey, Josh Lucas, Matt Ross, Jared Leto, Cara Seymour and Samantha Mathis, the film is one of the most essential films about NYC in the 80's.

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST means we stay spooky five days a week all October long and on “TRUE THREAT THURSDAYS” our scares are rooted in reality. For certain movies there is a level of skepticism and exploitation you can't ignore but today's discussion involves a film based on one of the most notorious unsolved serial killings in US history. The seemingly unending spiral that is the Zodiac Killer case can feel very lofty but David Fincher manages to adapt Robert Graysmith's book on the killer in a way that strikes a fantastic line between terror, procedure and anxiety. We're talking about Fincher's 2007 true horror “ZODIAC” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Elias Koteas, Philip Baker Hall, Chloe Sevigny and many more. A real ensemble feast so well balanced and compelling that you can hardly tell it's pushing three hours. Arguably one of the best films based on a true crime that exists with some of the most frightening scenes we will see all month. Can we eat this movies butt any harder? Following the discussion, Bob presents some of his own evidence on who he thinks the Zodiac killer might be and it shocks Angela to the core. For our season nine finale I have a legendary journalist, Laurence Leamer, here to talk about his book Capote's Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era, which is the basis for the new Ryan Murphy show on FX, Feud: Capote vs. the Swans. (I loved the first iteration of Feud—about Bette Davis and Joan Crawford—and I love everything Ryan Murphy does.) The show has a cast as deep as any ocean: Naomi Watts. Diane Lane. Demi Moore. Calista Flockhart. Chloe Sevigny. Molly Ringwald. And Tom Hollander as Truman Capote. It premieres on FX on January 31 (and the next day on Hulu) and it will be appointment television for me. Through this book, this series, and this conversation, we dip our toe into New York City high society, into the world of Truman Capote and his “Swans”—glamorous women who were Capote's closest confidantes. Babe Paley, Slim Keith, CZ Guest, Gloria Guinness, Pamela Harriman, Lee Radziwell, and Marella Agnelli were not just beautiful and wealthy, but intelligent and interesting. Then, enter the “feud” portion of the program: Capote wrote a piece for Esquire called “La Cote Basque 1965,” in which he puts the Swans' dirty secrets in black and white, and in print for the entire world to read. The women cut Capote off totally; it was social suicide, and it led to Capote's downfall that ultimately resulted in his death. Why did he do this? He thought they'd be too dumb to know the piece was about them. It was one of the worst decisions he could have ever made. Here to tell us all about it is the legendary Laurence Leamer, who is regarded as an expert on the Kennedy family and who has written biographies of not just the Kennedys but also the Reagans, Johnny Carson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ingrid Bergman, and Donald Trump's resort, Mar-a-Lago. By the way, I have to throw this detail in here—his book about Mar-a-Lago was controversial and banned him from the resort for life. Not unlike that detail, this book and this conversation are as compelling as it comes. Speaking of Writers

In HITCHCOCK'S BLONDES, bestselling biographer Laurence Leamer offers an intimate journey into the lives of eight legendary actresses whose stories helped chart the course of the troubled, talented director's career—from his early days in the British film industry, to his triumphant American debut, to his Hollywood heyday and beyond. Through the stories of June Howard-Tripp, Madeleine Carroll, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, Janet Leigh, Kim Novak, Eva Marie Saint, and Tippi Hedren—who starred in fourteen of Hitchcock's most notable films and who bore the brunt of his fondness and sometimes fixation—we can finally start to see the enigmatic man himself. After all, “his” blondes (as he thought of them) knew the truths of his art, his obsessions and desires, as well as anyone. As with his previous book, Capote's Women, Leamer's empathetic retelling acknowledges their complex stories and allows their biographies to take priority.   Alfred Hitchcock was fixated—not just on the dark, twisty stories that became his hallmark, but also by the blond actresses who starred in many of his iconic movies. The director of “North by Northwest,” “Rear Window,” and other classic films didn't much care if they wore wigs, got their hair coloring out of a bottle, or were the rarest human specimen—a natural blonde—as long as they shone with a golden veneer on camera. The lengths he went to in order to showcase (and often manipulate) these women would become the stuff of movie legend. But the women themselves have rarely been at the center of the story, until now. Biographies have been written about Alfred Hitchcock, but never has there been an account of his life and work told through the lens of the actresses who helped launch his career.   ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Laurence Leamer is a leading biographer of the rich and powerful, including Capote's Women, Madness Under the Royal Palms and The Kennedy Women, among many other books. Leamer's last book, 2021's CAPOTE'S WOMEN was an acclaimed national bestseller and will serve as the source material for the second season of Feud, Ryan Murphy's F/X anthology series. It has a jaw-dropping cast of stars attached including Naomi Watts, Molly Ringwald, Diane Lane, Demi Moore, and Chloe Sevigny, with Gus Van Sant directing.  He lives in Washington, D.C., and Palm Beach, Florida. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

Nick looks back a pair of weird sketches that aired on "Saturday Night Live" in 1993, bombing the first time and killing the second. The sketches, featuring a hilarious Phil Hartman as the fictional editor of the real teen magazine "Sassy," interviewing teenage heartthrobs, were meant to be satires of early 90s pop culture and hunky male celebrities, but kind of missed the mark. Here, Nick plays both sketches in their entirety, gives you the background and creation of each sketch, tells you about the episodes in which they appeared, and how they still have dedicated cult fans who laugh every time they watch them. You will also learn about the cast members and hosts who were in the sketches, and get a complete history of the ridiculous magazine that inspired them (a magazine that actually launched the careers of people like Chloe Sevigny and Spike Jonez). Hilarious work from Hartman, Adam Sandler, Jay Mohr and others are showcased, in addition to exploring some classic 90s SNL moments. Let's get Sassy! [EP45]

Based upon true events, this recounts the incredible story of Stephen Glass (Hayden Christianson), a young reporter for the New Republic in the '90's who made quite a name for himself writing several high-profile stories for the magazine which garnered a lot of attention for just how entertaining and informative they were....and apparently several of them were entirely made up by Glass. :o What results is a scandal with a very troubled soul at the center of it - along the way, we get to know both editors (Hank Azaria, Pete Saarsgard) and fellow reporters (Chloe Sevigny, Steve Zahn) who were also affected by Glass' deception.  Billy Ray directs a journalistic docu-drama which has proven just as relevant today as it was when it was first released twenty years ago.....Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
