The poor handling of not only the assault case before his murder, but also the aftermath negatively impacted the queer community. However, the story started an important dialogue. Brandon Teena should be remembered for his bravery for living authentically, and respected in death for who he was. TW: SA, r*pe, transphobia

Nex Benedict was a 16 year old trans child who used he/him/they/them pronouns and lived in Oklahoma outside of Tulsa. Early in February, they were bullied to death in the girls bathroom at school. Before passing, video and text messages were captured from Nex reflecting on the experience of the fight that took his life and the years of harassment and bullying that led up to it. Many folks have been struck by his unjust and untimely passing - including bad actors and bigots like the head of Libs of TikTok who was recently appointed to an Oklahoma position overseeing library books. For most queer folks, however, Nex's killing evokes painful memories about our own traumas -- and the deaths of our queer siblings over the years including especially Matthew Shepherd, Brandon Teena, Brianna Ghey, the Q Nightclub Shooting, The Pulse, O'shae Sibley, and on and on and on. In this episode, Elle shares her feelings that come up after hearing of Nex's death -- as well as short recordings taken from the Vigil in her town. She finishes the episode with an invitation to take constructive action to push back against the hate. It's Pride! And what better way to dive into it than revisiting culturally relevant, trailblazing -- and traumatic -- movies about the LGBTQ+ community. This week we welcome artist, urban planner, activist, and host of the Fruta Fresca podcast, Jose Richard Aviles to talk about the film Boys Don't Cry directed by Kimberly Peirce and starring Hilary Swank, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of the real-life trans man Brandon Teena and his murder in Nebraska in 1993. They had lots to say about this very poignant -- but very problematic film for 2023. Released in 1999, Boys Don't Cry was a watershed moment for queer representation -- but we know that it hasn't aged well. Aviles and Dino-Ray Ramos navigate through this film with critical thinking, but most of all, with empathy. It's a tragic story and to see that translated on screen brings about a lot of risks in representation and makes space for toxicity and violence. Watching Boys Don't Cry in 2023 is like walking through a landmine of harmful and hard to watch portrayal of trans people as well as much-needed queer representation we have never seen in 1999. DISCLAIMER: Some topics we discuss may be triggering and difficult to hear. === Problematic Fave is presented by DIASPORA and is created, hosted and produced by Dino-Ray Ramos. The series is also produced by Sanjay Sharma of Marginal MediaWorks and edited by Brian Aguilar. Filmmaker Kimberly Peirce talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about her award-winning film “Boys Don't Cry” that was featured on the second season of Turner Classic Movies series “Reframed”. “Reframed” addresses famous/classic films that may have been controversial when they were released due to their themes like homophobia, misogyny, racism etc. The series that aired throughout November also took a look at pioneering LGBTQ films from an historical perspective. Each film is shown along with a discussion from film experts about these issues. Peirce co-hosted the show with Ben Mankiewicz who engaged in a conversation about how this 1999 breakthrough film raised awareness to the lives of our transgender community and the discrimination they faced that unfortunately continues today. “Boys Don't Cry” was directed by Kimberly and co-written by Peirce and Andy Bienen. The film is a dramatization of the real-life story of Brandon Teena played by actress Hilary Swank who won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance. The story is about a trans man who attempts to find love in Nebraska but falls victim to a brutal hate crime perpetrated by two male acquaintances. The film co-stars Chloë Sevigny who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress as Teena's girlfriend Lana Tisdel. We talked to Kimberly about what she hopes to accomplish with her work and her spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Kimberly Peirce received a BA from the University of Chicago and an MFA from Columbia University Graduate Film. She also graduated from Sundance Institute's Writing, Directing & Producing Labs. Her unflinching debut feature “Boys Don't Cry” earned numerous honors and was inducted into the Library of Congress as a National Treasure in 2020. Her second feature “Stop-Loss” was released by Paramount Pictures in 2008. In 2013 she directed a remake of the horror film “Carrie”. Boys Don't Cry holds a 90% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a pretty astonishing 86% Metacritic. And with scores like that, one might get the impression that was and is a universally admired classic. Billed as a dramatization of the events leading up to the 1993 rape and murder of 21-year-old trans man Brandon Teena, it was nominated for 57 major awards and won 37 of them. 14 of went to star Hilary Swank, 6 to costar Chloe Sevigny, and 8 to writer director Kimberley Peirce. And Swank of course won the Oscar for Best Actress, while Sevigny was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. But critics at the time almost always misgendered Brandon in their reviews. And the film effectively erases the trans identity of its protagonist, which some argue is the result of a conscious and unforgiveable narrative and creative decision made my Peirce, who cast a cisgendered woman to play Brandon and who shut out essentially all input and participation from anyone in the trans community.  In the 23 years since its release, Boys Don't Cry has not aged well. But this week's guest, writer and trans horror historian Logan Ashley Kisner, argues that it's not all about aging - Boys Don't Cry is a fundamentally, irredeemably transphobic film. Brandon Teena hoped that he could start a new life in a new place where no one would know that he was trans. But instead, he was outed in a humiliating fashion. Then, he was brutally raped and murdered by two male acquaintances. And in the aftermath, many journalists at the time framed the story as a curiosity at best and an outright joke at worst. But Teena's tragic death was also a watershed moment in LGBTQ history. Not only did it expose an epidemic of anti-trans violence in America, but it also arguably paved the way for numerous hate crime laws across the country that specifically included trans people. While there is still much to be done, there's no question that the story of Brandon Teena changed history.     This week three films about trans people recommended by transgender friends of ours and one film by a trans woman. We discuss these films in broad terms for general viewers with the hope that will help them be seen by more people and for those viewers to begin larger dialogs. We are not the people who should, or even really could, have a more in depth discussion about them. Trans rights are human rights.      Boys Don't Cry- inspired by the true story of Brandon Teena, a trans man who tried to find himself and love but instead was brutally murdered by two cishet male acquaintances.      Black Lizard (1968)- Sanae is kidnapped by the notorious criminal mastermind Black Lizard. Her father enlists the help of master detective Kogoro Akechi to bring her home. Twists, double crosses, disguises within disguises, a brilliant lead performance, and multiple abrupt love stories make this a tragically overlooked classic.     Funeral Parade of Roses- Eddie works as a host at Genet night club. Leda is the club's managing "lead girl" and begins to suspect that Eddie is sleeping with the owner, who also happens to be Leda's partner, to move up the ranks. Leda is correct. There are also flashbacks of murder, film students, and documentary interviews with the cast as their real life selves. A brilliant art film that smears lines and disregards conventional narrative for a fascinating meta look at the Tokyo scene it was created in.     Solomon Kane- Based on the pulp character created by Robert E Howard. The Devil comes to claim the soul of Puritan and privateer Solomon Kane. Kane flees to a remote monastery but is soon set on his path of redemption. A path that will carve a bloody trail all the way back to his childhood.      All that and a far from gentle reminder that trans rights are human rights. We condemn the attacks on this simple truth, not just the current massive push at local and national levels across the globe but those through out history. Episode 250- Trans People Films to Spit in Transphobic Eyes (OR... This week is a very horrible and difficult topic, but one we thought needed to be covered, and hopefully we did it justice. This week we are talking about Transgender people who have been murdered. This topic highlights the abuse and issues trans people face every single day, as well as the ultimate price many pay simply for living as their true selves. We try our best to be allies, and we hope shedding some light on these absolutely terrible cases will help put an end to violence against trans people, because it's simply not okay. Sorry for no fun quips this week, twisted listeners, but this topic is just too dark. In honor of Pride Month, this week, Drewby and Yergy take a trip to Nebraska to discuss the 1993 killing of Brandon Teena, a young transman and subject of the 1999 film "Boys Don't Cry," and mother Lisa Lambert, and Philip DeVine, a 22 year old black man that was completely erased from the movie. In addition, we discuss how the film didn't age well to the point of being considered transphobic by some folks.  Thank you to Bailey and Floss/Pugsunset1 for your episode suggestion. Fair warning: This movie can be really tough to watch. Boys Don't Cry is a heart-wrenching biopic based on the true story of Brandon Teena, a transgender man who was raped and murdered in Nebraska in 1993. The film stars Hilary Swank, who won an Oscar for her performance, with a stellar supporting performance from Chloë Sevigny and a haunting one from Peter Sarsgaard. Listen as Peter, Tricia and Greta discuss what the movie meant at the time, how it holds up and how it doesn't. And be sure to join us next week for 10 Things I Hate About You. Trigger Warning: In Kerri's story, there are explicit conversations about rape and sexual abuse involving the LGBTQ+ community. Kerri's story starts at 29:21   Donna covers the Bennington Triangle, an area of southwestern Vermont where strange things keep happening. The Triangle features a ghost town with a monster in the woods. And an area where people keep going missing without a trace, and seemingly with no explanation.   Kerri then covers the rape and murder of Brandon Teena. This story was the subject of the 1999 film Boys Don't Cry. Brandon, along with two others were murdered in Nebraska in December 1993. Brandon's murder, along with others led to increased lobbying for hate crime laws in the US.   If you have any local true crime, local urban legend/lore, ghost stories.. we want them all!!
