In part two of Jeff King's interview with North Korean defector Hyeonseo Lee, Lee discusses the nightmare of being separated from her family and the journey she took to reunite with them. The post Episode 42: A Spoonful of Freedom appeared first on Persecution.
When Hyeonseo Lee escaped North Korea at seventeen, she needed to learn how to be free. It was normal for people to suddenly disappear and to hold public executions for 'criminals.' Few places were untouched by the surveillance of the North Korean regime. Hyeonseo Lee shares her life journey with Jeff King in part one of a two-part episode. The post Episode 41: The Walls Have Eyes appeared first on Persecution.
A North Korean Defector's Story.
For most defectors the decision to leave North Korea is never an easy one, and there are major difficulties in addressing the refugee crisis. Those crossing into China risk arrest and deportation, and the safety of those left behind is often in question. Hyeonseo Lee defected from North Korea in 1997, and has since become an activist for human rights. Her memoir, The Girl with Seven Names, is a New York Times best seller. Guest: Hyeonseo Lee

More often than not, we wear many hats in our lifetime, but only a few can say that they have worn the hats of an Olympian, coach, entrepreneur, and investor, but one person who can is Bob Berland. In the 1984 Olympic Games, Bob brought home a silver medal, which remains the highest finish of an American in Judo history. He brought home another bronze medal in 2004 Olympic Games, as the team coach. Today, he is the 3rd generation president of his family's printing business, but he is also a note investor, a less common investment vehicle. Backed with 10 years of note buying experience, he willingly shares his thoughts and approach to note investing and how others can get started with this passive investment vehicle. While concerns over nuclear and ballistic missile tests tend to dominate the headlines about North Korea, a story that may be just as consequential has been quietly developing over the past two decades. Private enterprise and sophisticated markets are starting to give the country’s citizens access to a wide array of goods, including illegal foreign media products. Today, the country’s millennial generation is coming of age having grown up with a market mentality and far more foreign media exposure than their parents — something that’s having major social and political implications. In this episode, we trace how this generational shift is changing North Korea from the inside.
Hyeonseo Lee was born in 1980 in North Korea, a country she thought was the best on the planet’ until she witnessed great suffering and starvation. At the age of 17, she left her family behind and escaped alone to China. Hiding her identity for ten years, her life in China was far from easy and she eventually decided to flee for South Korea. There she faced further challenges when the authorities initially didn’t believe she was North Korean. Some time later she returned to China where she met her family and travelled to Laos in order to bring them to join her in South Korea. However the family were caught and imprisoned in Laos until an Australian backpacker helped pay for their release. Hyeonseo is the author of an acclaimed book, the Girl with Seven Names, and her TED talk has reached well over 10 million people. While still struggling to adapt to her new freedoms, she travels extensively sharing her story and telling the world about what is happening in North Korea. ........... Imagine having to flee your home country, leaving your mother and brother behind you. As a child, Hyeonseo Lee thought her country– North Korea- was the best on the planet. It wasn‘t until the devastating famine of the 1990s that she began to question those beliefs and look for an escape route. As a teenager, she fled to China to stay with distant relatives and spent the next ten years hiding her true identity before finally escaping to South Korea. She then made the courageous decision to return to the North Korean border in a daring mission to bring the rest of her family to safety. Now a university student and human rights advocate, the author of the memoir The Girl with Seven Names reveals the details of her extraordinary journey. She offers a unique insight into the situation of the people of North Korea and how we can help those still suffering.
Defecting from North Korea is not only a tremendously difficult and perilous enterprise – it remains a lifetime challenge, even after one has successfully defected and resettled to South Korea. Many refugees struggle to adapt to their new life and must bear a sense of longing, guilt, and sometimes even an urge to go back. Most had to leave friends and family members behind, and while North Korea is certainly ruled by a brutal, ruthless regime, it remains home to those who were born there. Our guest for this episode is Hyeonseo Lee, who defected from North Korea at the age of 17 and eventually reached Seoul after ten years in China, where she lived in fear of arrest and deportation. She wrote about her experience in the international bestseller The Girl with Seven Names and delivered an acclaimed TED Talk in 2013 that was watched over five million times on Youtube and TED.com. She is now an outspoken activist for North Korean refugees and has been featured in major media outlets worldwide. Hyeonseo gracefully accepted our interview request and talked to us about life in North Korea, her “accidental” decision to defect and how it changed her life, the struggle to adapt to South Korean society and economy, the sense of guilt and various discriminations North Koreans defector all too often face, and the irony of her meeting with her future husband, Brian – an “American bastard”.
Jonathon Van Maren talks with Hyeonseo Lee, who grew up in North Korea and witnessed public executions as a child. She recently wrote "The Girl With Seven Names," and discusses what it was like to grow up and live in the world's most notorious and totalitarian state.
As a child of Kim Il-sung’s North Korea, a teenage Hyeonseo Lee believed the Dear Leader was her saviour, even holding on to that faith after she’d fled the country to live with relatives in China. Subsequently, Lee fought for the rest of her family to join her over the border in the South. In The Girl with Seven Names she tells her incredible story, and reveals human rights abuses that have largely been kept secret. Recorded live at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
