In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Fyodor Tertitskiy, a longtime Seoul-based scholar of North Korean history and author of “Accidental Tyrant: The Life of Kim Il-sung,” a new biography of Kim Il Sung. Drawing on sources in Korean, Russian, Chinese and Japanese, Tertitskiy offers a fresh and deeply researched account of the man who founded one of the world's most enduring authoritarian regimes. We explore Kim's improbable rise from guerrilla fighter to head of state at just 33, how he consolidated power and created a system of hereditary rule, and why his legacy still looms large over North Korea today. Tertitskiy also discusses the mythmaking around Kim's persona, from teleportation to pine cone grenades, and examines the broader implications of his rule for global security and the study of dictatorship. Fyodor Tertitskiy has been residing in South Korea since 2011. He earned his PhD from Seoul National University in 2017 and is currently a lecturer at Korea University. Jihyun Park est née sous le régime totalitaire de Kim Il-sung, tandis que Seh-Lynn, Sud-Coréenne, a grandi entre plusieurs continents. Toutes deux sont aujourd'hui installées à Londres, où elles se sont rencontrées. De cette rencontre est né le livre bouleversant Deux Coréennes (Ed. Buchet-Chastel, 2019), le récit de Jihyun mis en mots par Seh-Lynn. Ce livre évoque le quotidien dans un système où peur, famine et propagande façonnent chaque geste, et où la loyauté au parti détermine le destin de chacun-e. On y suit l'enfance de Jihyun marquée par l'idéologie du régime et les divisions sociales, avant qu'elle ne fuie en Chine. Kim's passing marked the end of a generation of Marxist revolutionaries in the region, creating uncertainty about whether his successors could maintain the same level of idolization from the population - especially given that his death happened during the early stages of a devastating famine. Die längste Zeit der koreanischen Geschichte waren die verschiedensten spirituell-religiösen Rituale und Wertvorstellungen wie schamanistische Geisterbeschwörungen, buddhistische Zeremonien und konfuzianische Ahnenverehrung in der Bevölkerung gleichermaßen verbreitet, ohne dass sich die Leute einer organisierten Religion zugehörig fühlten. Noch heute ist die allgemeine religiöse Toleranz in Südkorea vorbildlich. Erst mit der Urbanisierungswelle aufgrund des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs in den 1960er und 70er Jahren traten immer mehr Koreaner vor allem einer buddhistischen oder christlichen Konfession bei. So sind und waren sämtliche südkoreanische Präsidenten mit voller Amtszeit (ohne die Militärführer) Anhänger einer Kirche, meist der katholischen. Auch der Gründervater Nordkoreas, Kim Il-sung, ist als Presbyterianer aufgewachsen. Kirchen, Prediger und Missionare gehören heute zum typischen Stadtbild, und Weihnachten ist ein offizieller Feiertag. Ist Südkorea ein christliches Land?

Vendredi 24 novembre 2023, le dirigeant nord-coréen Kim Jong-un a célébré une « nouvelle ère de puissance spatiale » après la mise en orbite cette semaine d'un satellite espion. Le succès de ce lancement intervient après deux échecs, en mai et en août dernier. Il n'a pas échappé aux observateurs que ce succès arrive surtout après que Kim Jong-un et Vladimir Poutine ont, ces derniers mois, resserré leurs liens. Des liens qui, en particulier sur le plan militaire, sont anciens. Pendant la guerre de Corée, l'URSS avait soutenu, Kim Il-sung, le grand-père de Kim Jong-un, et dès cette époque, Moscou a noué des liens très étroits avec Pyongyang, pointe Cyril Bret, chercheur à l'institut Jacques Delors et spécialiste de la Russie : « Oui, elle remonte à l'époque soviétique et à la Guerre froide, et ça compte dans un pays comme la République démocratique populaire de Corée ou tout le pacte social est fondé sur le souvenir de cette époque et de la guerre de de Corée. L'URSS avait envoyé un fort contingent du côté Nord lors de la guerre de Corée en 1950, 25000 hommes. Puis l'URSS a reconstruit très largement la capitale Pyongyang, après les destructions de la guerre de Corée. Donc ces liens sont très forts. Ces liens sont historiques et ces liens sont à l'honneur depuis au moins deux ans maintenant à Pyongyang. »Le 27 juillet dernier, Sergueï Choïgou, ministre russe de la Défense, était d'ailleurs à Pyongyang pour la commémoration de l'armistice de la Guerre de Corée...Puis le 13 novembre, le président russe Vladimir Poutine et le dirigeant nord-coréen Kim Jong-un ont échangé une poignée de main au cosmodrome russe de Vostotchny, dans l'Extrême-Orient russe. Selon Washington, La Corée du Nord, à cette occasion, aurait accepté de céder un million d'obus pour soutenir l'offensive russe en Ukraine, mais aurait obtenu, une sérieuse contrepartie, précise Cyril Bret : « Ce que met Moscou dans le panier de la mariée, si j'ose dire, c'est tout leur savoir-faire en matière spatiale, en matière d'observation satellitaire et d'observation aérienne. Et enfin, en matière de vecteurs, puisque c'est là que le programme nucléaire stratégique coréen du Nord achoppe dans la mise au point de ces fameux missiles intercontinentaux. Donc c'est une espèce d'échange de bons procédés entre la Russie qui a besoin d'artillerie et de munitions d'un côté que fournit la Corée du Nord et de l'autre côté, eh bien ce qui manque à l'effort de guerre constant de la Corée du Nord : le spatial, les vecteurs et l'observation. » L'Alliance Russie-Corée du Nord percute les intérêts chinoisCette étroite collaboration militaire Corée du Nord-Russie est-elle compatible avec « l'amitié sans limites », pour reprendre les termes officiels des relations entre cette fois la Chine et la Russie ?« Russie et Corée du Nord doivent faire preuve de retenue », a réagi Pékin... Mais la Chine a laissé filtrer son agacement après le lancement du satellite espion nord-coréen, nous dit Stéphane Lagarde, correspondant de RFI à Pékin : « Oui, ça fait longtemps que la Chine est gênée par son turbulent voisin. Il faut savoir que quand il y a des essais nucléaires dans les montagnes nord-coréennes, la terre tremble jusque de l'autre côté de la frontière, ici en Chine, et la Chine n'apprécie pas du tout. Pékin tonne contre le régime des Kim. Mais depuis quelque temps, c'est vrai, il y a eu un adoucissement. C'est en tout cas ce qu'on a perçu ici de la position chinoise vis-à-vis de son allié nord-coréen. On l'a vu notamment lors du discours de l'ex-ministre de la Défense, au dernier dialogue de Shangri-La. On a eu l'impression que, dans le contexte des tensions américaines autour de Taïwan et sur d'autres sujets, la Chine avait relâché la bride. Certains analystes ici, pensent même que Pékin ne voit pas d'un mauvais œil finalement la fourniture d'armes nord-coréennes à la Russie dans le contexte encore une fois de sa rivalité régionale avec les États-Unis, sauf qu'aujourd'hui, les choses changent. On a ce changement de ton. En tout cas, on a ce réchauffement Sino-US, avec la rencontre des présidents chinois et américains en marge du sommet de l'Apec. Et on aura ici début décembre le sommet européen. Les Américains, comme les Européens, disent à Pékin que le lancement d'un satellite espion nord-coréen, avec l'aide de la Russie, est un franchissement de lignes rouges. C'est aussi ce que devrait répéter Catherine Colonna (ministre française des Affaires Étrangères), qui est en visite en Chine en ce moment. Un message que devrait comprendre le régime chinois qui n'a pas envie que des intérêts stratégiques européens ne viennent modifier la donne stratégique en Asie. » Et les experts militaires sont formels, la mise en orbite de ce satellite espion fournirait en cas de conflit des données cruciales à l'armée Nord-coréenne.

Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded in Greece, in Athens , by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century BC . The Stoics taught that destructive emotions resulted from errors in judgment, the active relationship between cosmic determinism and human freedom, and the belief that it is virtuous to maintain a will (called prohairesis ) that is in accord with nature. Because of this, the Stoics presented their philosophy as a way of life and thought that the best indication of an individual's philosophy was not what a person says, but how that person behaves. To live a good life, one had to understand the rules of the natural order, as they taught that everything was rooted in nature. Later Stoics—such as Seneca and Epictetus —emphasized that because "virtue is sufficient for happiness," a sage was immune to misfortune. This belief is similar to the meaning of the phrase "stoic calm", although the phrase does not include the views of the Stoic "ethical radicals" that only a sage can be considered truly free and that all moral corruptions are equally wicked. Stoicism developed as a system integrated by logic, physics and ethics, articulated by common principles. It was Stoic ethics that had the greatest influence on the development of the philosophical tradition and some think that it even influenced the beginnings of Christianity . From its founding, Stoic doctrine was popular with followers in Roman Greece and throughout the Roman Empire , including the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius ( 121–180 ), until the closing of all schools of pagan philosophy in 529 by order of Emperor Justinian ( 527–565 ), who perceived them as at odds with the Christian faith . Neo-Stoicism was a syncretic philosophical movement, joining Stoicism and Christianity, influenced by Justus Lipsius . This episode will explore the origin and modern use of its name, as well as its history. It explores the basic principles and characteristics as well as its epistemology with its accompanied social philosophy. The founder of Stoicism was Zeno of Scythium who was an ancient Greek philosopher. He was born in Citium (present -day Larnaca ), on the island of Cyprus . He taught in Athens , which was where he founded the Stoic philosophical school around 300 BC. Based on the ideas of the Cynics, Stoicism emphasized peace of mind, achieved through a life full of virtue , in accordance with the laws of nature. Personality cults are often found in dictatorships , although they also exist in democracies. The term "personality cult" was first used by Nikita Khrushchov in the Secret Speech to denounce Josef Stalin , although this idea has appeared without this name since the French Revolution when political leaders stopped being seen as representatives of others to be seen as representatives of themselves. Khrushchov quoted a letter from Karl Marx , which criticizes the "cult of the individual". A personality cult is similar to apotheosis , except that it is created specifically for political leaders. The cult can also appear as a cult of artificial masculinity characteristic of political leadership. The cult includes giant posters with the leader's image, his constant flattery by the media, and often persecution of dissidents . Il 17 dicembre, ieri, per chi legge, era l'anniversario della morte di Kim Jong-il, padre dell'attuale dittatore nordcoreano. È anche un periodo di "festa" teoricamente, visto che alla morte del padre è seguita la successione di Kim Jong-un, ma il tetro protocollo cerimoniale del regime comunista preferisce il lutto. Per 11 giorni filati, dieci anni dopo quel fatidico 2011, la lista dei divieti è lunghissima. Oltre che vietato sorridere o ridere in pubblico, saranno vietati i matrimoni, i funerali, i compleanni, non si potranno bere alcolici nei locali. La pena è l'arresto e si può arrivare fino alla pena di morte.C'è obiettivamente qualcosa da festeggiare in questi dieci anni di dittatura? Kim Jong-un ha inaugurato il suo "regno" con un'ondata di epurazioni che hanno colpito anche suoi parenti prossimi. E per lanciare segnali di sfida all'estero, ha ripreso ben presto sia i test nucleari che gli esperimenti di missili balistici intercontinentali, entrambi sotto sanzioni Onu. Nonostante tutto, ha anche cercato di mostrarsi come un leader moderno e più rispettoso dei diritti umani rispetto ai suoi predecessori. In dieci anni si sono registrate "solo" 27 esecuzioni in pubblico. La mortalità è elevatissima, anche perché le punizioni fisiche sono frequenti e provocano lesioni gravi, mutilazioni e spesso anche la morte dei prigionieri.Kim Jong-un, che ha studiato all'estero (in Svizzera) ha promosso di sé l'immagine di un leader moderno intento a riformare economicamente il Paese. Ma dieci anni dopo, la situazione è precipitata e lo stesso dittatore ha dovuto ammettere, la primavera scorsa, che il Paese sta attraversando un nuovo "arduo marzo", il termine con cui è popolarmente conosciuta la grande carestia degli anni 90. La nuova crisi è stata innescata soprattutto dalla chiusura di tutte le frontiere, compresa quella con la Cina, per evitare l'arrivo del Covid-19. Dopo aver fermato tutte le importazioni, la popolazione fa la fame. Testimonianze raccolte da Open Doors, riferiscono di catasti del cibo e fabbriche alimentari circondate da filo spinato e presidiate da guardie armate, per impedire furti di cibo. La gente se la cava come può, anche mangiando erbe selvatiche. Se è vero che la situazione è precipitata a causa della chiusura delle frontiere, oltre che di una serie di tempeste e altri fattori naturali, l'agricoltura nordcoreana dà ancora una pessima prova di sé, dimostrando di essere ancora in balìa degli eventi naturali. Non è cambiato, poi, il criterio di distribuzione del cibo: prima i militari, poi il resto della popolazione. E nonostante ciò, il militare che nel 2017 riuscì a defezionare in Corea del Sud, ferito dai suoi ex commilitoni durante la fuga, venne trovato dai medici sudcoreani così malnutrito e infestato da parassiti da diventare un caso studio.Sempre secondo Open Doors, la Corea del Nord è, per il ventesimo anno di fila, il Paese al mondo in cui i cristiani patiscono la persecuzione più estrema. «Essere individuati come cristiani è una sentenza di morte in Corea del Nord. Se non si viene uccisi all'istante, si viene deportati in un campo di lavoro per crimini politici. Eppure i cristiani nordcoreani, stimati in circa 400mila, devono vivere nell'ombra, non possono praticare il culto né in pubblico, né in privato. Dai 50mila ai 70mila cristiani sono attualmente internati nei campi di concentramento. La Corea del Nord, sin dai tempi di Stalin, che insediò al potere Kim Il Sung (nonno di Kim Jong-un) nel 1948, è uno Stato ufficialmente ateo. O meglio: neopagano, perché i suoi leader, ormai una dinastia intera, sono venerati come se fossero dei. E per questo è vietato anche solo sorridere nei giorni in cui cade l'anniversario della morte dell'ultimo di questi dei.

The terrible conflict in Korea sixty years ago is properly described as “the Forgotten War.” Especially lost to memory is the strategic mistake many experts believe precipitated South Korea's invasion by the North. We may be poised to make an equally fraught mistake in our time. In 1950, then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson publicly drew a line describing America's critical interests in Asia that excluded South Korea. Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin concluded that his puppet in Pyongyang, Kim Il-sung, could seize the entire Korean peninsula with impunity. The rest as they say is history, however poorly it is recalled.  Today, North Korea is promoting a peace agreement formally ending the Forgotten War. Unfortunately, as we discuss in a powerful new television series called “Issues Alive” rolling out today, this diplomatic gambit may produce another invasion of the South – and Korean War 2.0. Kim Il-sung is, perhaps, a name that you do not hear all that much these days, if you are not a North Korea watcher. What you might hear way more often is the name of his grandson, Kim Jong-un, who is the current head of the North Korean state. However, it was Kim Il-sung, who shaped North Korea as we know it today – as the most controlled society in the world. It was Kim Il-sung, who plunged the Korean Peninsula into the bloodbath of the Korean War and cemented the division of Korea. It was Kim Il-sung, who created a personality cult that remains unparalleled in humanity's modern history. The founder of North Korea maintained his grip on power for almost half a century until he passed away in 1994. In today's episode I try to take a broad look at how Kim Il-sung's life as a political leader shaped North Korea as a country and society we know today.
