Turncoats, opportunists … or just idealists whose bosses lost their way?  Defecting to a new party is one of the momentous decisions an MP could ever make. Years of loyalties, backroom deals and deep friendships are lost in an instant. Patrick Baker speaks to MPs who have wrestled with the decision to switch party, to discover what it is really like.  Shaun Woodward, who left William Hague's Conservative party to join Blair's New Labour in 1999, recalls the dirty tricks used try to prevent his defection and how the move precipitated a huge media storm. Former Ipswich MP Dan Poulter, who defected from the Tories to Labour last April, explains how he lost faith in the Conservatives (just before an election) and solicited advice from those on the other side of the aisle, including veteran MP Jon Cruddas. Helen Pidd, host of The Guardian's Today in Focus podcast, was given special access to defector Christian Wakeford in Parliament, and witnessed first-hand the reaction from Tory MPs furious at his perceived betrayal after the Bury South MP crossed the floor to join Labour. Brexit stalwart Douglas Carswell recounts his decision to join UKIP, which helped to pave the way for the EU referendum — while David Cameron's former communications chief Craig Oliver sets out his strategy for spinning a subordination in the ranks. And Libby Wiener, who spent twenty years as a political correspondent for ITV News, looks back at the Westminster drama of multiple defections. She explains how these rare events are becoming more common, in an era where voters' own party allegiances are less secure. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In a Presidential race that will be decided on the margins – there's evidence that Vice President Kamala Harris is losing support among Black Voters and Latino Voters. Both groups still overwhelmingly support Harris, just less overwhelmingly than Democrats in the past. Journalist Paola Ramos has spent the last few years trying to understand why a growing number of Latinos seem drawn to former President Donald Trump and his far-right, nativist message. She spoke with insurrectionists, border vigilantes, a MAGA congresswoman, and others for her new book “Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What it Means for America.”And in headlines: Donald Trump spends 39 minutes dancing at a rally, Georgia sets records for voter turnout during early voting, the Biden administration threatens to withhold weapons funding from Israel unless they allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza, and North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson sues CNN for defamation.Show Notes:Check out Paola's book – https://tinyurl.com/fbxtw38eSubscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

“I've communicated with some people inside of North Korea, and I heard from them that the recent famine is very similar to [the] 1990s famine. And, as we all know, almost 3 million people died of starvation during that time.”Hyun-Seung Lee, otherwise known as “Arthur” Lee, is a former member of the North Korean ruling party. He and his family were fiercely loyal to the communist regime. But being on the side of economic reform and having witnessed several brutal internal purges by Kim Jong Un—including that of Kim's uncle—the family made the decision to defect.“Many people, especially top people, and even [the] general public in Pyongyang City, don't know what's happening outside Pyongyang because of the isolation of the information. The regime structure controls the information distribution,” says Mr. Lee.We discuss North Korea's current food crisis, the regime's nuclear weapons program, the value of free information, and what can be done to bring about change.“North Korea's regime keeps saying that once we have nuclear weapons, we'll live [a] better life … and we will be a strong country in terms of economy and the military side. Now, they have enough nuclear weapons—and the people are still suffering from starvation,” he says.Despite the political and cultural divisions in the United States, Mr. Lee believes that it is one of the world's greatest nations in terms of its commitment to democracy and individual freedoms.“American people should respect this society, because many people in the world think that still, America is the best. The freedom they have cannot be compared to the other nations,” says Mr. Lee.

Myanmar has been engulfed by a civil war which is getting deadlier and more violent as time goes on. Last year the Tatmadaw – the Burmese armed forces – overthrew the civilian-led government, led by Aung Sun Suu Kyi. Now they're acting with impunity, allegedly committing heinous crimes against those who oppose them. In the past year many Tatmadaw soldiers – thousands, according to the opposition – have had second thoughts about their military service and are defecting to the other side. Trending has spoken to several of the defectors. In this highly anticipated Cultish exclusive, co-hosts Jeff Durbin and Jeremiah Roberts are joined in Studio by former BSSM student Lindsay Davis. Just a few weeks ago, Lindsay created much controversy with the announcement that she was expelled from the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry for publicly speaking out against the school. Why did this happen? What caused her to doubt Bethel’s cause and begin to think differently than she had a few months prior? In this three-part series, we speak in depth with Lindsay Davis about her time at Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry and discover what makes this worldwide movement so alluring. We also discuss some very concerning psychological and sociological cultish behaviors which line up with descriptions given by experts like Steven Hassan and Rick Allen Ross, who have extensively researched recent cultish movements in the United States. Most importantly, we discuss the theological cultish behaviors that fall under Walter Martin’s classic definition: “ a group of people gathered around a specific person or person’s misinterpretation of the Bible. “ Additionally, we explore the physical and supernatural manifestations happening at Bethel, which brings up the question: are these experiences movements of God, psychosomatic episodes, or something else? Could it be possible to experience healing and the supernatural apart from God? There is no doubt that Bethel Church has worldwide influence, and because of this, it is imperative to have this conversation. We invite you, regardless of where you stand on this issue, to be part of this conversation and listen to Lindsay’s story with an open mind.

In Part 3 of this highly anticipated Cultish exclusive, co-host Jeremiah Roberts wraps up this compelling conversation with former BSSM student Lindsay Davis.

Tonight we discussed amoung other things that we are ambassadors to the Kingdom of God, that we represent and are on a mission from God to share the message of his Salvation through Christ, that we are all called for this mission and that the we shouldn't play a double agent to his Kingdom and the world, that we should effectively use what God has bestowed on us, that we should boldly represent his kingdom and that we shouldnt seek to be rewarded by the world and make church just an activity, but rather making Church and working for his Kingdom our mission because it is his mission.

"One of my co-workers said, 'Trump supporters are without exception the worst people I've ever met, they're almost sub-human.' And I'm standing there thinking, you know, we're friends, but I think I'll keep my mouth shut." That's Alex Mamach, a young white Chicago native who grew up in a poor and diverse suburb of Chicago. He gives voice to why millions of Americans support Donald Trump: because Trump speaks to his marginalized constituency in a way that neither party has done in decades. And when his co-worker, the political establishment, and the media accuse Trump supporters of being sub-human, ignorant, and racist, it only entrenches their support and reinforces the notion that only he cares about poor white Americans. So why did Alex defect from the Donald, and who did he switch to? Tune in for that, but for now, a sneak peak into how Trump supporters might be moved in a new direction: by appealing to their nobler intentions.

Defecting from North Korea is not only a tremendously difficult and perilous enterprise – it remains a lifetime challenge, even after one has successfully defected and resettled to South Korea. Many refugees struggle to adapt to their new life and must bear a sense of longing, guilt, and sometimes even an urge to go back. Most had to leave friends and family members behind, and while North Korea is certainly ruled by a brutal, ruthless regime, it remains home to those who were born there. Our guest for this episode is Hyeonseo Lee, who defected from North Korea at the age of 17 and eventually reached Seoul after ten years in China, where she lived in fear of arrest and deportation. She wrote about her experience in the international bestseller The Girl with Seven Names and delivered an acclaimed TED Talk in 2013 that was watched over five million times on Youtube and TED.com. She is now an outspoken activist for North Korean refugees and has been featured in major media outlets worldwide. Hyeonseo gracefully accepted our interview request and talked to us about life in North Korea, her “accidental” decision to defect and how it changed her life, the struggle to adapt to South Korean society and economy, the sense of guilt and various discriminations North Koreans defector all too often face, and the irony of her meeting with her future husband, Brian – an “American bastard”.

It's 2013 and Nikita Odnoralov, is one of the founding members in the band of brothers who call themselves "Everfound". He's 23 years old and so wise beyond his years. His story, his family's story, needs to be made into a Hallmark movie. Nikita's journey starts with a great, great, grandfather living in the communist Soviet Union. The story is one of many twists and turns, with the great, great grandfather being imprisoned because of his faith, missionaries blasting Christian music into communist Russia and people finding God because of it, concentration camps, the family eventually coming to America to avoid religious persecution, and a band of 4 brothers, who through their music broke through in spite of where the family came from years earlier. Nikita's story will make you pause, and hopefully think about some of the simple freedoms we enjoy here in America, things we take for granted like our freedom to worship. Is it ever right to ignore the things that God has put in your lap to do?  Now there's a loaded question, especially in a Christian culture that is constantly asking people find "God's will for your life".  Well, the problem is that too many people think that God's will basically stops at conquering sin in your life.  This is where Martin Luther in his Small Catechism, when talking about the commandments, shows that not only is there a prohibition in each commandment, but also a prescription.  In other words, the commandment doesn't just say "do not", but it also says "do this instead".  That and more about "Defecting" and believing the good news.   Visit Matthew Pancake's Facebook http://www.facebook.com/matthew.pancake Visit Pastor Gary Held's Facebook http://www.facebook.com/garyheld Visit our Website www.RadicalGraceRadio.com
