President Trump is set to sign his "big, beautiful bill" on Friday after the House passed the legislation in a 218-214 vote, with two Republicans joining Democrats to oppose it. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stalled the final passage Thursday in a record-setting speech that lasted nearly nine hours. CBS News' Robert Costa joins "CBS Mornings" to break down what's in the legislation. An effort by some states to protect children from gun violence has hit roadblocks. The new laws require gun owners to lock up their firearms at home or face prosecution. However, implementing the law has presented its own set of challenges. CBS News' Scott MacFarlane reports. Millions will gather across the U.S. for the dazzling sights of fireworks to mark the Fourth of July, but the tradition relies almost exclusively on China. The Asian country makes nearly all of the fireworks that are used in the U.S. It's causing problems for fireworks retailers, many of them small businesses, because of the uncertainty of President Trump's tariffs. CBS News' Ian Lee reports. Renowned underwater archaeologist James Delgado joins "CBS Mornings" to discuss his new book "The Great Museum of the Sea" and reflect on his decades-long search for historic shipwrecks, including the Clotilda. Dr. Ian Lee is an Associate Professor at the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University and talks about two paths forward for Canada Post in a conversation with 980 CFPL's Mike Stubbs.
He won last month's election for the Liberals promising he had a plan to protect Canada's economy from the predations of the American president. But since returning to Ottawa, Prime Minister Mark Carney has sent alarming signals to business and scaring off badly needed capital investment, as economist and professor Ian Lee tells Brian this week. The Liberal government's decision to avoid tabling a budget makes it seem like there actually is no plan, Lee says. Meanwhile, comments from Carney's cabinet that they're wavering on a new oil export pipeline suggest that the country will be just as unwelcoming to resource development as the last one. Now, it's looking like the man elected to reverse Canada's long-running decline might just instead make it worse. (Recorded May 16, 2025) Learn more about your ad choices. In the latest episode of On The Line, Matt Gurney dives into the geopolitics of trade and the early days of a new Canadian government.First up, Ian Lee from the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University joins Matt to talk about the so-called “deal” recently announced between the United States and China. Ian isn't here to defend Donald Trump — and says so clearly — but he also offers a sharp take on how Trump's erratic approach to trade could still end up a political win for the U.S. That is, of course, if Trump can stay out of his own way. If he can? If his plan works? The implications for Canada? Not great. Especially if you're a fan of the auto sector. This episode of On The Line is brought to you by Innovative Medicines Canada. With a new government in place, one thing remains clear: Canada must continue to prioritize patients and healthcare innovation. Innovative Medicines Canada is focused on collaborating with all levels of government to improve access to life-saving medicines and develop a healthcare system that prioritizes patients, ignites innovation, and drives economic growth.Canada's innovative medicines sector plays a critical role—not just in health outcomes, but in keeping us competitive on the global stage. That's why, even during a moment of political change, Innovative Medicines Canada is staying focused on the issues that matter most to Canadians. And as Canada moves forward with national pharmacare, Innovative Medicines Canada believes it's possible to expand access without limiting choice—by strengthening what works and fixing what doesn't.Visit innovativemedicines.ca to learn more.Later in the show, Jamie Carroll — Liberal member of The Line's Anti-Panel — returns to talk about the first few weeks of Mark Carney's term as prime minister. He and Matt unpack how the Liberals are settling into their new minority, what the Conservatives are doing (or not doing), and why the NDP still can't seem to catch a break — even after all that's happened. As always, like and subscribe at ReadTheLine.ca. CBS News' Ian Lee spoke to fired federal workers on their personal impact and how Americans will be impacted by these cuts. It's not just about tariffs. If you examine what the America First advisers around Trump really think, you'll understand their determination to undertake a sweeping overhaul of the global economic system — and why they're starting with Canada. Brian's guests this week, trade researcher Carlo Dade, from the Canada West Foundation, and Ian Lee, public policy professor at Carlton University, have done their homework. That's unlike many of our political leaders, who seem oblivious to the real threats — or who, worse, like certain Liberals, think they can exploit a destructive tariff war for partisan gain. As Ian and Carlo tell Brian, the people around Trump aren't scared of higher import prices, and what they're really interested in from Canada doesn't even seem to be on Ottawa's radar.
