I had a chance to catch up with veteran studio legend Steve Sykes and he shared a lot of cool stories and studio tips in this interview. We had a blast! His advice for young people starting in the business is straight inside scoop and he shares it towards the end of this video.Steve's knowledge of diverse musical styles is demonstrated in his wide list of credits which include many Latin artists. He has worked with superstars Enrique Iglesias, Luis Fonsi and Cristian Castro, Puerto Rican songstress Ednita Nazario, Thalía, Maria Conchita Alonso and Argentinian ska rockers “Los Fabulosos Cadillacs”. Many of these albums went gold or platinum. After mixing a couple of albums for platinum selling Spanish rock band Seguridad Social, they asked him to come to Spain to produce an album. That collaboration resulted in the hit album “Camino Vertical”. A year later, Steve again headed to Spain to produce another album for the band, “Va Por Ti”. His international projects also include many for Japanese clients and he has made numerous trips to Japan to record and mix. Among his Japanese projects are the number one hit and platinum album “Love Again” for popular band Globe and teenage superstar Rie Miyazawa's first album. Steve won a Japanese recording award for his work on Mari Ijima's album “Good Medicine” in 1996. Recently Steve mixed a best of album for Italian star Umberto Tozzi with producer Greg Mathieson. Other musical genres Steve has worked in extensively are jazz and smooth jazz. He has recorded and mixed for most of the major artists on the smooth jazz charts including multiple albums for artists including The Rippingtons, David Benoit, Mindi Abair, Rick Braun, Jeff Golub, Wayman Tisdale, Peter White, Paul Taylor, Everette Harp, Brian Culbertson, Diane Schuur, Eric Marienthal and Warren Hill. He mixed an album for reggae group Black Uhuru which went to the top of the Billboard World Music charts. He recorded tracks for two albums by Lalah Hathaway, both of which had hit singles on the Adult R&B and Hot R&B charts. Steve recorded and mixed the reunion album for jazz fusion band Seawind. He recorded and mixed two albums for singer Miki Howard. “Miki Sings Billie” was her tribute album to legendary jazz vocalist Billie Holiday and featured full orchestra recordings by Steve at Capitol Studios. In 2008, Steve recorded and mixed Al Jarreau's top Contemporary Jazz Christmas album “Christmas”. Recently Steve has recorded tracks for celebrity DJ “DJ Cassidy”, whose first single “Calling All Hearts” features Robin Thicke and Jessie J. Cassidy's album “Paradise Royale” hosts a who's who of the hottest studio musicians and performers in the world including drummer John “JR” Robinson, guitarists Paul Jackson Jr and Nile Rodgers, bassists Marcus Miller, Freddie Washington, Verdine White and Bobby Watson. Among the performers on this album were Larry Dunn and Philip Bailey, thus reuniting Steve with his former band mates. This time Steve was the engineer and not the guitar player. In an issue of Electronic Musician magazine, Steve gives an in depth interview where he explains some of the recording techniques, studios and equipment he used in the making of this album.Find out more about steve at his website https://www.stevesykes.comFor video episodes and more visit Rob's channel at https://youtube.com/planetmullins

Episode 5: "Wham, Bam, Thank You Dalek" - Classic Doctor Who Comics Double Feature - Patreon Exclusive COMIC STRIP REVIEW #1: "The Therovian Quest" (January 18 - February 22, 1965) TV Comic, Six Issues (Two Pages Per Week) Writer/Artist: Neville Main The First Doctor's TARDIS crashes on an alien planet where he and grandchildren John and Gillian encounter Grigg, a spaceship pilot whose vessel is also stranded. Grigg desperately seeks a cure for a plague that has incapacitated everyone on his homeworld of Theros except himself. In a shocking decision, the Doctor repairs Grigg's ship and abandons the still-damaged TARDIS on the planet to help this stranger - a moment of tension as they literally leave the time machine behind and never mention it again until the story's end! The quest takes them to the ice planet Ixon to harvest medicinal moss, where they're captured by Ixon warriors. King Ixa provides equipment including a sled to reach the dangerous caves, but secretly plans to steal the moss and sell it at exorbitant prices to the Therovians. After Grigg battles a furry cave monster (throwing it into an ice ravine), they retrieve the moss but are captured again. The Doctor sets fire to something (possibly the moss itself?) creating chaos and smoke that allows their escape back to Grigg's ship, returning to Theros to save the plague victims before finally returning to repair the mysteriously-fixed TARDIS. John and Jim's Analysis: Jillian's disappearing act continues - The female companion has maybe two word balloons throughout the entire six-issue story, to the point where the Doctor and John briefly forget she exists. The hosts lament this "all-he-man, no-girls-allowed club" mentality in a strip based on a show meant to be all-inclusive. Neville Main's artwork shines - Both hosts appreciate the visual presentation, particularly the spaceship designs and background details. Main clearly uses Hartnell photo references, though his TARDIS-in-flight depiction (a corkscrew swirly line suggesting rapid spinning) amuses the hosts. The Doctor as spaceship engineer - Jim questions when the Doctor became qualified to repair alien spacecraft faster than their actual owners. Grigg's suspicious appearance - Designed to look villainous initially, subverting expectations when King Ixa becomes the actual antagonist. John's bloodthirsty evolution - The grandson appears drawn older in close-ups, as if maturing into a violent young man over time. "Doctor Who" naming persists - The strip continues calling the protagonist "Doctor Who" rather than "the Doctor." Jim declares this "on the same level as the first storyline" - straightforward space opera that doesn't connect much to the TV series, though the art remains enjoyable. COMIC STRIP REVIEW #2: "Genesis of Evil" (January 23 - February 6, 1965) TV Century 21, Three-Part Story (One Page Per Issue) Writer: David Whitaker (from Terry Nation's plot) Artist: Richard Jennings Jim's immediate reaction: "Gorgeous." This landmark Dalek origin story appeared in the back pages of TV Century 21 magazine, forcing young fans to buy multiple publications for their Doctor Who fix. Set on the planet Skaro, the strip reveals how the robotic Dalek shells came to exist following a catastrophic event that irradiated the planet (here depicted as a meteor storm hitting nuclear stockpiles, contradicting the TV series' neutron bomb). Two blue-skinned humanoid Daleks (members of the original Dals/Kaleds race) crawl from the rubble and encounter a horrifying sight - one of their own people, so mutated by radiation that he's encased himself in a mechanical pepper-pot shell. This robotic Dalek reveals he created the protective casing and now the survivors must build more shells for the remaining Daleks. The story establishes the Dalek Emperor character (gold and ruby-plated) who will feature in subsequent strips, creating a hierarchy absent from early TV stories. John and Jim's Analysis: Stunning artwork - Richard Jennings delivers detailed, beautifully colored pages that exceed the Doctor Who strip's quality. Jim calls it an "eye opener." Terry Nation's contractual power - Nation receives prominent billing despite David Whitaker doing the actual scripting, showing the Dalek creator's early leverage (eventually buying a manor with Dalek profits). Canon contradictions - The strip doesn't contradict the first TV Dalek serial and actually fleshes it out nicely, but future TV story "Genesis of the Daleks" will completely reimagine the origin. The hosts discuss how ancillary products are always subordinate to on-screen canon. Perfect pacing - The compact one-page-per-issue format keeps the story moving efficiently without lingering, unlike the sometimes padded Doctor Who strip. Thals connection - The strip references the Thal people from the TV series, maintaining continuity while expanding the mythology. The Emperor's absence - John wonders why this gold Emperor wasn't in "The Daleks" TV story, speculating future strips might explain it. Jim enthusiastically declares: "I enjoyed this way more than the Doctor Who strip" and looks forward to continuing Dalek adventures. LOOKING AHEAD The hosts preview their upcoming Friday Patreon release covering "The Web Planet" - John approaches it fresh without having started watching, hoping for better appreciation than his initial expectations. Jim looks forward to eventually finding a story where John declares "this is horrible" so he'll "feel justified." I remember my first meeting with Terri Thal. She was preparing for the publication of her new book. She had titled it, MY GREENWICH VILLAGE, Dave, Bob and Me It's release coincided roughly with the movie about Bob Dylan's Life, A Complete Unknown. The movie was three hours long and ,yes, Timothée Chalamet did all the playing and singing himself. I asked. But if you've got three hours to spend, I'd just buy Terri's book. If you go to a movie that's 3 hours long, chances are you won't be able to stand up afterwards and people look at you funny if you keep sitting in your chair. Terri and I had not met previously but were both very interested in the prime days of folk music. Terri Thal was very much a part of the folk music world in 1960s Greenwich Village, New York. Few people know that she was 21-year-old Bob Dylan's first manager prior to his contract with Albert Grossman and Columbia Records. She also managed musician Dave Van Ronk (who later became her husband), and others to include the Roche sisters, Paul Geremia and The Holy Modal Rounders. The book is a personal story of the world of folk music in 1960s New York written by a Jewish woman from Brooklyn who, although not a musician, was an intrinsic part of this scene. Terri describes Greenwich Village as a community that was supportive, musically exciting and one in which people had fun. When i met Terri last week to prepare for the interview, she was in that new, questioning mood. She wanted, she said, to decide what there was for a woman past 50 to look forward to, in a world skewed away from women. Writer Robert Tompkins joined our group revealed that he has begun to learn to play the mouth organ because he has found that when he has a tough to solve problem. doing something different often helps, and sure enough, in no time at all, ideas were flying - and so we decided that we'd meet again in two months with some brand new ideas. Be sure to join us, and if you have some ideas you'd let us to cast a bit of light on. She didn't want to do another book that required the research Dave, Bob, and Me had required. And she wanted to make a difference in the world. So we invite you to join in the ideas and be sure to listen to our December podcast and let us know if you have any ideas. We'll see that Terri gets them. Let us know if you need ideas too. We'll keep you posted. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: September 17, 2025Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS9: E6: Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (Guns & Roses, Asia, Sons of Apollo, Art of Anarchy) - Guitar Wizardry UnleashedSHOW SUMMARY:Guitar virtuoso Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal takes us behind the curtain of his creative process, sharing the fascinating story of his latest instrumental album "Bumblefoot Returns" and the innovative techniques that have defined his distinctive sound. Released in January 2024, this album marks his first fully instrumental release since his 1995 debut and features collaborations with legendary musicians including Brian May of Queen, Steve Vai, and Guthrie Govan. The conversation delves deep into Bumblefoot's journey with the fretless guitar – an instrument he describes as "learning a different language" that transformed his approach to melody and expression. He reveals the origin of his signature metal thimble technique, which allows him to access notes beyond the traditional fretboard limitations. These innovations began when a 12-year-old Ron first heard Eddie Van Halen and realized "there are no limits to how you could make a string vibrate and make it speak." Beyond his musical innovations, Bumblefoot shares insights into the challenges facing touring musicians today, where merch sales and direct fan support have become essential for survival. He's found creative ways to make his album release an event rather than just another digital drop – offering vinyl with special artwork, CDs with fold-out posters, cassettes, transcription books with backing tracks, and even a free retro video game based on the album's artwork. The conversation takes unexpected turns as Bumblefoot discusses his award-winning hot sauce line, including the infamous "Bumblefucked" – once ranked the third hottest sauce in the world at 4-6 million Scoville units. He hints at plans for new hot sauce flavors named after songs from his album and a forthcoming comic book project that will bring the album's artwork to life in new ways. For aspiring musicians and longtime fans alike, Bumblefoot's passion for experimentation and artistic growth shines through every story. Whether he's discussing his upcoming performance at a festival in Jakarta or his role as a counselor at Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, his enthusiasm for connecting with other musicians and fans remains as vibrant as his innovative playing style. Tune in for a master class in creative thinking from one of guitar's most original voices.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist(s) Web PageWeb - www.bumblefoot.comCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. The addition of Rob Caggiano (Anthrax, Volbeat) in 1998 began a creative writing relationship between him and singer Chris Lino and elevated the bands sound and performance. 1999 saw the band opening for nationally recognized acts along the East Coast, including Type O Negative, Life of Agony, Clutch and Static‑X, helping them catch the attention of renowned NYC radio station 92.3 K‑ROCK. Upon the release of their album they toured with Disturbed, Mudvanye, Kittie, and also Headlined a club tour in Europe. The band disbanded in 2001, with Caggiano leaving to join Anthrax and the other members dispersing into various projects. Chris Lino connected with Mike Orlando and finally in 2022, Orlando reached out to Chris and suggested that he consider re-recording and re-releasing some of Boiler Room's previously released songs. Episode 208A recent Ligonier survey of evangelicalism finds nearly 50% of processing Christians do not deem it important to share their faith with the lost. Nearly 50%! That is a topic for another day, but for the slight majority that do see the need to witness to others, many thousands feel they are hindered. The reasons may include a lack of equipping, a fear of not knowing what to say, or maybe even the fear of man. In this episode of the Removing Barriers podcast, we sit down with recurring guest Edward Thal, whose fascinating life is a testament to God's love and mercy, to discuss how we as believers can become effective soulwinners. Brother Thal reminds us, among other things, that a well-rehearsed script is not the effective way to win souls, but a wholehearted surrender to God is. Join us on this episode as he discusses these and more. May the Lord ignite in our hearts the same desire for the salvation of lost souls that the Bible clearly declares He has (1 Tim 2:4-6).Listen to the Removing Barriers Podcast here:Spotify: https://cutt.ly/Ega8YeI Apple Podcast: https://cutt.ly/Vga2SVdEdifi: https://cutt.ly/Meec7nsvYouTube: https://cutt.ly/mga8A77Podnews: https://podnews.net/podcast/i4jxoSee all our platforms: https://removingbarriers.netContact us:Email us: https://removingbarriers.net/contactFinancially support the show: https://removingbarriers.net/donateAffiliates:Book Shop: https://bookshop.org/shop/removingbarriersChristian Books . com: https://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/home?event=AFF&p=1236574See all our affiliates: https://removingbarriers.net/affiliates

Episode 270: This episode is about the one word our graduates and salespeople have in common: Resilience! I was having dinner with my niece, Alanna, and celebrating her graduating from the University of Cincinnati - Go Bearcats. I was thinking over her past four years, starting with the challenges of her roommate on day one, a new world of living independently, creating new friends, and navigating school workloads and social calendars. I shared with her at dinner that the one word I felt described her four years was that she was resilient. I was so proud of her learning and growing through each situation. Big congratulations to all the students! And a special shoutout to the parents and mentors who have been the pillars of support in their journey. I was thinking about how each of us is Resilient. In our relationships, we all had our first love, which we learned from, and then we had our second love and third love until we found that one person. I was thinking back to my college days as well. I thought about the one class where we had to learn audio and video when producing a show. My part was to do the soundboard for audio; I had no idea what I was doing. The professor yelled in the class, "Thal, you will never make it in broadcasting." If I wasn't resilient, I would not have created a successful 38-year career in broadcasting. Ironically, I created the Three Word Podcast, which included understanding recording audio. Resilience isn't just about bouncing back from setbacks but learning, growing, and emerging stronger. Whether you're a student or a sales professional looking for ways to create new clients. Resilience is a universal trait that we all possess and can develop. It's the secret ingredient to success, whether you're a student pursuing your dreams or a sales professional navigating challenging markets. What is Resilience So, what is resilience? At its core, it's the ability to recover quickly from adversity. Resilience is not a trait you're born with; it's a skill you can develop over time. And the amazing thing is, the more you train it, the stronger it becomes. It's like a muscle. For students, resilience may look like managing stress during exam season or bouncing back after a less-than-awesome grade; for sales professionals, it means overcoming rejection, staying consistent, and adapting to a competitive industry. Resilience is not just about enduring hardships; it's about adapting to them and building success on the other side. Mini Challenge for you: For today, think about one situation where you faced a major challenge. In your next sales meeting, discuss situations where your team was resilient. Now ask yourself: What did you learn? How have you grown? Identifying those moments helps us see resilience in action. How to Build Resilience Building resilience doesn't happen overnight, but it's doable with the right approach. Here are three strategies tailored for students and sales professionals alike. 1. Shift Your Mindset Students: View failure as feedback. That C on your biology test? It's not the end of your academic career; it's a wake-up call to refine your study approach. Sales Professionals: Instead of dreading rejection, consider it an opportunity to refine your pitch. Remember, every 'no' brings you closer to 'yes.' 2. Build a Support Network Surround yourself with people who uplift you. For students, this could be study groups or mentors. For sales pros, lean on your team during challenging times. 3. Practice Adaptability Life throws curveballs. Learn to pivot. Students might shift their study method partway through a semester while salespeople adapt to changing market trends. Why Resilience Equals Long-Term Success Here's the bottom line. Resilience isn't just about surviving difficult situations; it's about thriving because of them. It's about progress, growth, and staying in the game. Remember this mantra: "I am adaptable. I am strong. I am resilient." Share this episode with a friend or colleague if it resonates with you. And remember, your growth and success are our top priorities. Subscribe to never miss an episode, and let's continue this journey of resilience and personal growth together! Stay strong and keep showing up. Because success isn't about never falling down; it's about getting back up every single time. Until next time. See you in the next episode!
