I remember my first meeting with Terri Thal. She was preparing for the publication of her new book. She had titled it, MY GREENWICH VILLAGE, Dave, Bob and Me It's release coincided roughly with the movie about Bob Dylan's Life, A Complete Unknown. The movie was three hours long and ,yes, Timothée Chalamet did all the playing and singing himself. I asked. But if you've got three hours to spend, I'd just buy Terri's book. If you go to a movie that's 3 hours long, chances are you won't be able to stand up afterwards and people look at you funny if you keep sitting in your chair. Terri and I had not met previously but were both very interested in the prime days of folk music. Terri Thal was very much a part of the folk music world in 1960s Greenwich Village, New York. Few people know that she was 21-year-old Bob Dylan's first manager prior to his contract with Albert Grossman and Columbia Records. She also managed musician Dave Van Ronk (who later became her husband), and others to include the Roche sisters, Paul Geremia and The Holy Modal Rounders. The book is a personal story of the world of folk music in 1960s New York written by a Jewish woman from Brooklyn who, although not a musician, was an intrinsic part of this scene. Terri describes Greenwich Village as a community that was supportive, musically exciting and one in which people had fun. When i met Terri last week to prepare for the interview, she was in that new, questioning mood. She wanted, she said, to decide what there was for a woman past 50 to look forward to, in a world skewed away from women. Writer Robert Tompkins joined our group revealed that he has begun to learn to play the mouth organ because he has found that when he has a tough to solve problem. doing something different often helps, and sure enough, in no time at all, ideas were flying - and so we decided that we'd meet again in two months with some brand new ideas. Send us a text25 Years Later: The Inspiration Behind Boiler Room's  "Rectify"#newmusic #numetal #metalmusic #vocalist #boilerroom #rectify Originally formed in 1996 in New York City, Boiler Room released their self‑titled, independent album that same year produced by future Guns N' Roses guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. The addition of Rob Caggiano (Anthrax, Volbeat) in 1998 began a creative writing relationship between him and singer Chris Lino and elevated the bands sound and performance. 1999 saw the band opening for nationally recognized acts along the East Coast, including Type O Negative, Life of Agony, Clutch and Static‑X, helping them catch the attention of renowned NYC radio station 92.3 K‑ROCK. Upon the release of their album they toured with Disturbed, Mudvanye, Kittie, and also Headlined a club tour in Europe.The band disbanded in 2001, with Caggiano leaving to join Anthrax and the other members dispersing into various projects. Chris Lino connected with Mike Orlando and finally in 2022, Orlando reached out to Chris and suggested that he consider re-recording and re-releasing some of Boiler Room's previously released songs. Episode 270: This episode is about the one word our graduates and salespeople have in common: Resilience!   I was having dinner with my niece, Alanna, and celebrating her graduating from the University of Cincinnati - Go Bearcats. I was thinking over her past four years, starting with the challenges of her roommate on day one, a new world of living independently, creating new friends, and navigating school workloads and social calendars. I shared with her at dinner that the one word I felt described her four years was that she was resilient. I was so proud of her learning and growing through each situation.   Big congratulations to all the students! And a special shoutout to the parents and mentors who have been the pillars of support in their journey.   I was thinking about how each of us is Resilient. In our relationships, we all had our first love, which we learned from, and then we had our second love and third love until we found that one person.   I was thinking back to my college days as well. I thought about the one class where we had to learn audio and video when producing a show. My part was to do the soundboard for audio; I had no idea what I was doing. The professor yelled in the class, "Thal, you will never make it in broadcasting." If I wasn't resilient, I would not have created a successful 38-year career in broadcasting. Ironically, I created the Three Word Podcast, which included understanding recording audio.   Resilience isn't just about bouncing back from setbacks but learning, growing, and emerging stronger. Whether you're a student or a sales professional looking for ways to create new clients. Resilience is a universal trait that we all possess and can develop.   It's the secret ingredient to success, whether you're a student pursuing your dreams or a sales professional navigating challenging markets.   What is Resilience   So, what is resilience? Terri Thal was a vital presence in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk music world, where she played a pivotal role as Bob Dylan's first manager at just 21 years of age. At the heart of it all, she witnessed—and helped shape—one of the most important cultural movements of 20th-century America,"  Essayist Frank Matheis wrote those words about Terri Thal in his candid account, A Life of Grace and Grit: The Legacy of Terri Thal. Frank is also a guest on today's show and will share thoughts from his essay.   Terri was a multi-faceted music manager and lifelong activist. Thal has chronicled her remarkable journey in her tenderly-told 2023 memoir, My Greenwich Village – Dave, Bob and Me (McNidder & Grace). Characters were combined, or simply disappeared she says, and she's glad to fill in the spots with personal anecdotes that only she can tell. Matheis goes on, "In the early 1960s, New York's Greenwich Village was the epicenter of the American folk music revival. The Village pulsed with raw creativity and political passion, serving as the heart of the American folk music revival and a haven for artists, poets, activists, and dreamers. Its smoke-filled bars, clubs, and coffee houses overflowed with acoustic guitars, protest songs, and youthful rebellion.   Shortly after a 21-year-old Bob Dylan arrived in the city, Terri Thal became his first manager. She was already managing her husband, Dave Van Ronk—later dubbed the “Mayor of MacDougal Street”—and would go on to work with artists such as Maggie and Terre Roche, Paul Geremia, and the Holy Modal Rounders. In one of her most historically significant contributions, she recorded Dylan performing six songs at the Gaslight Café in September 1961—what would become known as “Bob Dylan's first demo tape.” That tape was the first step that propelled the “complete unknown” into national consciousness. She even reflects on the one that got away. Thal had a chance to manage James Taylor, but she turned him down. “He was just starting out,” she reminisces. “I thought he'd probably become very good, but he wasn't making the kind of music that excited me then, and I could only work with musicians who did.”  We'll be joined by Matheis who interviewed her for The Inspirational Art Group.  Frank Matheis is a music, arts and culture writer and a contributing writer to the Inspiration Art Group International.
