"The key is to figure out what you can do that others can't or are unwilling to do. Hard work is a talent. Curiosity is a talent. Patience and empathy are talents." "Helping others makes me feel strong." Scott's recent experience with Ketamine Therapy - "It clarified my thinking. It's helped me stop keeping score. It also made me grateful for my wife. Did you ever get a gift when you were a kid that you weren't expecting and you couldn't afford it? Something you never imagined having.” I got a $45 Banh skateboard from my mom's boyfriend Terry. It was a moment of sheer surprise and joy. My wife kept popping in my head and I kept thinking, god I get to hang out with this person, get to have kids with them, get to build a life with her. It was this overwhelming feeling of wonderful joy and surprise. It was very clarifying and rewarding for me.” "You Gotta Ask" - Scott met his wife at the Raleigh Hotel pool in Miami. He saw her from a distance and promised himself that he wouldn't leave the pool without introducing himself to her first. In order to do anything of significance in your life, you must take an uncomfortable risk." Scott is married to Beata Galloway, a real estate developer born in Germany. Together, they have two sons. One of them has the middle name, Raleigh. Why Crying is Important - "It informs what's important to you." Why Scott uses crude humor - It's used to connect with people. And people are either afraid or not able to do it. When Scott was 13… One of his mom's boyfriends handed him two crisp 100-dollar bills after he asked him about stocks. Terry (his mom's boyfriend) told him “Go buy some stock at one of those fancy brokers in the village." Once there, Scott met a mentor named Cy Gordner who helped him learn about the markets. Show up when it matters — Michael Bloomberg's policy. "If a friend gets a promotion, there is no need to call. You'll get dinner with them at some point. But if a friend gets fired, I have dinner with them that night in a public place where everybody can see me. Because I remember when I got fired from Solomon Brothers — I can tell you every person that called me. That meant something. When I was made partner? I have no recollection of that whatsoever." Last year Scott had 340 inbound speaking requests. He accepted 30 of them. His average rate is $112,000 per speech. “The stimulus that attracted my attention with the most urgency was money, not as a means of establishing economic security, but to feed my addiction: affirmation from others.” The role of Luck - Being born in America in the 1960s and two (most importantly) Scott's mom. Though she was raised in a household with little affection, she couldn't control herself with her son. “For me, affection was the difference between hoping someone thought I was wonderful or worthy and knowing it.” (Emotional) Scott is a dynamic communicator: A turn of phrase is a way of expressing something, in writing or speech, that stands out in some particular way. One of the key indicators of long-term success is the “willingness to endure rejection.” Whether this is walking up to a stranger at the Raleigh hotel, a cold-calling sales job, or asking people to be on your podcast. How to build wealth? Focus (mastery, find your talent), Stoicism (this is about saving more than you spend), Time ( 21 years with your money in low-cost index funds, you will earn 8 times your money), Diversification (Your kevlar). Once you earn some money, assume you are not Steve Ballmer or Mark Zuckerberg. Use a variety of investment vehicles. Going all on one company or asset class is not the optimal choice for most of us.

When we don't like our bodies, we often miss out on meaningful experiences such as swimming, playing sports or going on dates. Feeling good about ourselves allows us to enjoy life more and participate in activities that bring us joy. 7 Ways to Improve Body Image This Summer: 1) Practice positive self-talk- be mindful of the language you are using when talking about yourself and replace any negative thoughts with positive ones. 2) Focus on all your wonderful qualities - think about everything that makes you unique, such as your talents, skills, and passions. This will help boost your self-confidence. 3) Treat yourself with kindness - do things that make you feel good, like buying yourself a new suit or taking extra time for self-care. 4) Stay active - try different kinds of exercise that make you feel good both physically and mentally, like yoga or walking outdoors. Exercise releases endorphins which can help lift your mood and give you energy. 5) Surround yourself with people who love and accept you - being around people who support us can help us stay positive even when we are feeling down about ourselves. 6) Wear clothes that make you comfortable - choose items of clothing that look good but also make sure they fit correctly so they don't add unnecessary stress to your day. 7) Celebrate progress - focus on small accomplishments rather than focusing solely on long-term goals; celebrate even the smallest victories along your journey towards improved body image! Today is a departure from a direct discussion of the medicine or the US medical system. We delve into food. Food, is medicine in a way since it has physiological effects on how our bodies function. There's also a lot of rules and regulations around food that prevent people from being as healthy as they could. Finally, what's the deal with eggplants? Where Your Food Comes From is Important It is no longer a secret that the source of our food is an important bit of knowledge worth having. If the food is locally sourced it has many inherent advantages like improved 'ripeness' at harvesting, decreased transit time and chance to spoil, and it supports a local food network. Supporting local food sources creates a more robust supply chain which should offer protection if and backups in the events of disasters or a disruption in transportation of products. Unfortunately, many forms of government work to prevent the local sourcing of food through their regulations (usually written by massive food producers.) The regulations favor large operations that are probably less safe in some ways because they mix all sorts of products together in one centralized location. It may add convenience and some lowering of costs by scale but presents risk. One example would be mixing many different cows in a collection of ground beef. Contamination of just one of the cows could potentially spoil millions of pounds of beef. In contrast, buying your meat from a local farmer doesn't risk infecting an entire food supply - just one family. Also, with the farmer working with just one cow it is a lot easier for them to recognize problems and treat them. Is Aquaculture Common? To my surprise, Dann spoke about how common aquaculture for seafood is. On average, 50% of our seafood and fish come from farms all over the world. These environments are of dubious safety for the animals and the potential for disease is much higher with these creatures penned in together in abnormal living conditions. What's surprising is that a large collection of seafood can be grown in aquacultures like shrimp, mussels, oysters, tuna, and salmon to name but a few. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to determine where your seafood came from if you're at the store. The only reliable way is to ask the employee at the fish counter if the fish was fresh caught or not. Although the US has a number of restrictions in place to prevent the movement of seafood from countries with unsafe aquaculture practices, it is not uncommon for them to move the seafood to another country and package it there in order to change the 'country of origin' label. Only by seeking out fresh caught can you be certain of the fish being from a sanitary environment. What's the Deal with Eggplants? Before the interview in jest, I sent Dann a question about why would anyone want to eat an eggplant. I've always seen eggplants as pretty but inedible. Dann surprised me in sending in all sorts of reasons why I should not only eat eggplants, but why they are an amazingly versatile vegetable (berry really) for cooking. Eggplants are a rare food that maintains its structure despite being cooked thoroughly and also absorbs all the flavors from the spices and other foods it's cooked with. Our discussion almost made me want to go out and buy an eggplant. Almost. Dann Reid is the host of the Culinary Libertarian podcast and has extensive experience throughout the food service world. All troops should expect every adult to take on some kind of leadership role. One that’s often overlooked is Merit Badge Counselor (MBC). Merit Badge Counselor can be designated as troop only or open to the council use. Adult Cub Scout leaders are also qualified to be Merit Badge Counselors. This is a good way to start the bridging process to a troop. Requirements: Must have or completed an adult application process (YPT and background check) Must keep Youth Protection Training current Online or live Merit Badge Counselor Training Have proficient skills, experients, training, and/or knowledge of the Merit Badges ⚠️ Important: It is recommended to focus on 3 to 8 Merit Badges. However, there is no limit set if you are qualified. As a merit badge counselor: Follow the requirements of the merit badge, making no deletions or additions. Scout should use the buddy system. MBC keeps “2-Deep” leadership during all instructional sessions. This includes Email (CC), Online meetings, Phone calls, and texting. Keep your Youth Protection training current. Renew membership registration annually if I plan to continue as a merit badge counselor. Merit Badge Counselors can continue after their no longer with a unit. Merit Badge Counselors must register their Scouts BSA membership with the district/council.
Repetition! It's such a powerful little 4 syllable word called repetition. repetition. The word/concept is so Important- It has ties to leadership, persuasion, messaging, mindset, advertising, entertainment & more. There are two parts to this episode: Part 1: What's the acceptable amount of repetition in different kinds of entrainment- music, podcasting, Joe Rogan, comedy? I approach this part as less entrepreneurial, more conversational & non-authoritative. Part 2: Why Repetition is the cousin of the word “Fierce,” which is how you have to be in order to build something big. Being repetitive allows you to put in the 10,000 hours it takes to become an expert.

Episode 37 - In this final episode on managing your focus and attention, we look at dealing with the stuff that comes up in your day and give you some great techniques and solutions to help you get it done well. Some of the USEFUL stuff in there is: What's led to this episode: Episode 34 - How to say 'NO' to reduce your workload Episode 35 - How to decide what's important when prioritising Episode 36 - How to use 5 key tools to plan your day: A notebook (or somewhere to dump your 'mind') An Action list Buckets A Calendar A Routine BUT DON'T WORRY IF YOU HAVEN'T LISTENED TO THEM - OR PREPARED... There's loads in this one you can use either on its own, or with the structure How does your day look? Are you a canoeist, a balloonist, or a cyclist? PLANNING THE DAY This should take 5 minutes once you've got your template ready I use the questions from Peter Bregman's 18 minutes model: Review your Action list – what will make this day highly effective? What can I realistically accomplish in my areas of focus? (From EP35) What will leave me feeling productive and successful at the end of the day? Then pick 3 things from your Action List and put them into your calendar for today as they are now things which MUST happen on this day How you do this is up to you, but the key is choosing 3 'Important' things to do today If you have more than 3 things, or you're not sure which ones to choose use: The Urgent/Important Principle - A detailed explanation here from Mindtools.com Urgent = It's got a deadline (usually someone else's!) Important = It will help you make progress on one of YOUR bigger goals Ideally you want to pick 3 things which are 'Important' but not 'Urgent' Eating the Frog Choosing the right energy levels Planning in breaks and movement Setting a chime every hour to check we're on course. When it goes off... BEEP! STOP! Take a deep breath. Then… Am I doing what I most need to be doing right now? Am I being who I most want to be right now? Recommit to how you're going to use your next hour DOING THE DAY Scenario 1 - You are presented with a single simple action to complete Can you fully do this action, completely within 2 minutes? Is it a single item which does not have loads of others behind it? If so - do it as soon as you are presented with it This is the 2 minute rule Use this rule with discretion - don't just default to doing everything as it comes along Solution 1 - If that action can be done completely - apply the 2 minute rule Scenario 2 - You're presented with a number of tasks and/or some will take more than 2 minutes Stop and think about what each thing means to you - what do you have to do? What is the 'action' you have to do to fully complete this task Break it down into multiple actions if needed Write each action down in a sentence with the 'action' word at the front E.g. "OUTLINE the Redman report" or "CALL the garage to book the car in" If you have a system - put it in there. If you don't - park it by putting it onto a list Solution 2 - Break the task down into a doable action - and put onto a list OR use your notebook/action list/buckets to put it into your system Scenario 3 - Being presented with 2 or more things which want your attention NOW Use the Urgent/Important Test again The phone is ringing it's your son's school The boss wants a response to an email within 10 minutes A colleague is asking for some help with a task We decided that the school call was 'Urgent' AND 'Important' - so we did this first The boss request - that was 'Urgent', but not 'Important' (in our test) so we did this next Jane's request was 'Important' but not 'Urgent' - so we planned to help her later today when we had time Solution 3 - Use the Urgent/Important principle...
Welcome to episode 604 of the School of Podcasting Listen here Update on the PreSonus StudioLive AR12 USB Mixer The last episode I explained how I had purchased at PreSonus StudioLive AR12 USB Mixer. It's not cheap ($499) but there is an AR8 that is $150 ($350) less. The problem I had was when I record to the built-in SD card, there was a very faint (but noticeable) high pitch whine. In working with tech support that has been resolved and after updating the driver, it seems to have quit freezing up the audio on my computer. All in all, I'm happy with it. This is partially due to me having a DBX 286 which adds extra gain. I am using an Electrovice RE320, and it just seemed odd that I needed to really turn every (almost) all the way up to get things to peak. The fact that these units have built-in SD records can save you from buying a Zoom H1 (or any portable recorder) to get the recording off the computer. The Zoom H1 is typically around $100. Look for the price of the Zoom H1 to go down (more on that later) as they just announced a new Zoom H1n which will be available soon (that unit is geared a bit more towards musicians) Sponsor: Podcast Movement I am so looking forward to Podcast Movement. Jeff has a TON of bonus content for those that pre-order his book at his website His membership portal is built in Digital Access Pass and Learn Dash What is his favorite Todo List Task Manage? Why Getting Organized is Important It only makes sense to go fast when you are headed in the right direction. For me, being somewhat A.D.D. I get new ideas all the time. If you walk into my kitchen, you will find the cabinets open as I have moved on to my next task (eating ) without completing the last 1% of the previous project (closing) so I'm taking some of this year to get more focused, identify what is important to me, and then put the gas pedal down so I'm going fast, in the right direction. My favorite tools are Todist and Evernote. I'm currently taking a class on getting the most out of Todoist and Evernote. Check out Carl Pullein's channel on YouTube For learning how to use these tools. How did I learn about his channel and content? I told someone I was listening to Jeff's book, and he had been watching Carl's videos. Tell people what you are up to, they may have some great insights. My favorite example of Todoist is I can read an email and turn it into a to an item. For example, we previously had an episode with Clay Groves from Fishnerds.com on the show and he was talking about doing appearances. Another listener (who asked to be nameless) wrote in that "When I was in radio, the standard appearance rate was $250 an hour and you couldn't book talent for less than 2 hours. When I got my first speaking contract (for a very large health company) it was $750 for a half day, $1350 for a full day, with expenses and transportation covered. These rates are about 5 years old and may not apply to everyone.. but in case you were wondering.. that's one perspective." I've had that as a "to do" item and when I went into Todoist, I clicked a link and it took me to the actual email in Gmail. Great Advice on Growing Your Podcast Audience and Community Danny Pena has been on this show (amazing interview). He has a documentary coming out in February as he celebrates 13 years in podcast. Kelsey Merritt, Getting Clarity on Your Dreams The List Kelsey Merritt's list journey started when she was a junior in high school and her English teacher assigned her class the task of creating a bucket list of 25 items, then completing and documenting two of them. Merritt completed her two items and stashed her list away in her room, only to find it the next year. “I pulled it out around the end of senior year when I was cleaning out my room, getting ready for college,” Merritt says. She decided to complete her list. “From there, it exploded into the beast that it is today,” she says. Although ever-evolving, at the time of this interview, the list has 348 items, 184 of which have been completed. It's Important “It's important because it's helped me live my best life,” says Merritt. “I don't want to go through the motions of life. I want to experience this world as much as possible.” People are concerned that she won't finish her list before she dies, but that's not the point. “I'm not preparing myself to die,” she says. “It's taking what this world has to offer and just doing it.” People who assume it's a death preparation are thinking about it backwards. Experience is what gets people talking, because when you start to talk about something you're passionate about, you light up and your heart starts to sing, and it's opened up doors for her at career fairs and networking events because of that excitement. “It's made me who I am today,” Merritt says. “It's pushed me out of my comfort zone. It's taught me a lot about life, living,

TTMIK Level 5 Lesson 8 - -(으)려고 하다In this lesson, we are going to look at another way of talking about a future action or state. In Level 2 Lesson 1, we introduced how to make the most standard future tense using -(으)ㄹ 거예요 and in Level 3 Lesson 6, we introduced how to use -(으)ㄹ게요 to look for or ask for the other person’s reaction or feedback on what you are thinking of doing, and in Level 4 Lesson 2, we looked at how to express your strong intention for doing something or ask someone else’s intention using -(으)래요. Quick review ** 하다 = to do1. 할 거예요 = I’m going to do / I will do (plain future tense)2. 할게요 = I’m going to do … what do you think? (looking for the other person’s reaction)3. 할래요 = I want to do / I’m going to do (showing determined intention)** Important ** It might seem like there are just way more types of future tenses in Korean than necessary, but they all serve their specific purpose, so they will all come in handy when you need to say certain things in some specific situations. English also has a variety of future tense forms, such as “I am going to”, “I will”, “I am about to”, “I am thinking of”, “I am planning to”...etc. Today’s Key Structure:-(으)려고 하다 [-(eu)ryeo-go ha-da]Conjugation is simple가 + -려고 하다 = 가려고 하다먹 + -으려고 하다 = 먹으려고 하다잡 + -으려고 하다 = 잡으려고 하다하 + -려고 하다 = 하려고 하다-(으)려고 하다 is used when:1) someone is about to do something or wants/tries to do something2) something looks like it is about to happenUsage 1) - showing intention for action사다 [sa-da] = to buy사려고 하다 = to be about to buy, to be intending on buying, to be planning to buy [past tense]사려고 했어요 = I was going to buy it. [noun group]사려고 하는 사람 = someone who is planning to buy it[present tense + -는데]사려고 하는데 = I am thinking of buying it and/but....For showing intentions for doing something, -려고 하다 is not very commonly used for the plain present tense (-려고 해요) in spoken Korean. So if you say “사려고 해요.” it might sound very textbook-like and formal. You can use it, though, in very formal situations. Usage 2) - talking about a state of the near future떨어지다 [tteo-reo-ji-da] = to drop, to fall떨어지려고 하다 = to be about to drop, to be going to dropExample:비가 오려고 해요. [bi-ga o-ryeo-go hae-yo.] = It looks like it’s going to rain. How is it compared to the plain future tense?비가 올 거예요. = It is going to rain. (You know this for a fact.)비가 오려고 해요. = It is about to rain, judging from what I see. Sample sentences1. 어제 친구 만나려고 했는데, 못 만났어요.[eo-je chin-gu man-na-ryeo-go haet-neun-de, mot man-na-sseo-yo.]= I wanted to meet a friend yesterday, but I couldn’t meet her.= I was going to meet a friend ysterday, but I couldn’t meet her.= I was planning to meet a friend yesterday, but I couldn’t meet her.2. 외국에서 공부하려고 하는 학생들이 많아요.[oe-gu-ge-seo gong-bu-ha-ryeo-go ha-neun hak-saeng-deu-ri ma-na-yo.]= There are many students who want to study abroad.= There are many students who are planning to study abroad.** “-려고 하다" is easier for making noun groups like this than “-(으)ㄹ 것이다"3. 카메라 사려고 하는데, 뭐가 좋아요?[ka-me-ra sa-ryeo-go ha-neun-de, mwo-ga jo-a-yo?]= I’m planning to buy a camera. Which one is good?4. 친구가 울려고 해요. 친구가 울려고 해요. [chin-gu-ga ul-lyeo-go hae-yo.]= My friend is going to cry.= My friend is about to cry. 5. 친구가 이사하려고 해요.[chin-gu-ga i-sa-ha-ryeo-go hae-yo.]= My friend is planning to move. = My friend is going to move. = My friend want to move. 6. 아이스크림이 녹으려고 해요.[a-i-seu-keu-ri-mi no-geu-ryeo-go hae-yo.]= The ice cream is about to melt.

What is Important? It may depend on who you ask, what time it is, where you are or when you are. It seems to be generally agreed though that the friends encircling you rank pretty high on the list.
