From virtual assistants and proofreading essays to improvements in healthcare, it seems that artificial intelligence, or AI, is becoming an increasingly larger part of our daily lives and most industries, but would you trust AI to choose your wardrobe? There are now numerous apps that create virtual wardrobes, giving users insight into their current fashion style and giving tips to elevate it. One of these apps is Indyx, which describes itself as a 'one-stop digital wardrobe app unlocking the potential of what you already own'. Indyx encourages you to be environmentally conscious by combining the clothes you already have in your closet, which could mean breaking a cycle of fast fashion, helping you to shop smarter. There are similar apps out there too, like Whering, which can create entire outfits for you based on weather or occasion, and StyleDNA, which assesses the colours that suit you best. It's not only consumers using AI, but shops too. Clothing retailer M&S started using AI in 2024 to give advice to shoppers on outfit choices based on answers they give in an online quiz. They are asked about their body shape and style preferences, and are then given relevant outfit ideas with the aim being to personalise online interactions. Stephen Langford, M&S's director of online, has said the quiz can help choose outfits from 40 million options. However, there are sceptics within the fashion industry. Michelle Barrett is a personal stylist with Capsule Closet Stylist. She warns that consumers must remember that AI doesn't really understand your needs or looks – it's simply creating statistically-plausible looks for you. She says that when it comes to choosing colours that suit you best, for example, "the apps get different results each time. The algorithm is placing you into predetermined boxes based on the questions you answer and forms you fill out". So, considering this, will you use AI to help choose your outfits?

Full Plate: Ditch diet culture, respect your body, and set boundaries.
"Dress for your body type", "define your waist", and "only wear what is flattering". The anti-fat bias we talk about on this podcast all the time extends into how we dress ourselves and what we feel worthy of wearing. As our bodies change (as they will continue to do throughout our life), many of us are met with barriers to body acceptance. And our clothes are a massive part of that. But they can also be a pivotal part of our liberation. This week we're joined by Dacy Gillespie, a weight-inclusive anti-diet personal stylist. We untangle the mess of our closets, dismantle patriarchal ideas of fashion, and challenge our sense of what we "should" be wearing based on our body shape and size. What's on Dacy's plate right now (and importantly, what's not) Dacy's journey to personal styling and anti-diet work Why having a passion for clothing is not vain Fashion's role in body image and societal pressures Understanding clothing sizes and body measurements Size acceptance and our clothes How to shop for new clothing as your body changes Steps to take to identify your personal style separate diet and beauty culture Letting go of old clothes and emotional attachments How clothing sizes impact our body image The life-changing magic of finding your authentic style Challenging the inner critic when shopping Barriers to accessing clothing in a larger body The limitations of “flattering” The fashion rules we need to ditch How to deal with your closet About Dacy: As a weight inclusive, anti-diet personal stylist, Dacy Gillespie helps her clients reject fashion rules and ideal standards of beauty imposed by the patriarchy, white supremacism, and capitalism so that they can uncover their authentic style. Through their work building a functional wardrobe, Dacy's clients make a mindset shift from thinking they need to wear what's flattering to unapologetically taking up space in the world. After a lifetime of jobs in high-stress careers that didn't suit her highly-sensitive, introverted personality, Dacy started mindful closet in 2013 in an attempt to create a more emotionally sustainable lifestyle. Her work has been featured in Forbes and Real Simple and she is a frequent podcast guest. Dacy is married and has two boys, ages 5 and 9. Support the show: Enjoying this podcast? In Episode 329, Kestrel welcomes Jennine Jacob, a personal stylist and Instagram phenom, to the show. You may know Jennine from viral videos that explore the many layers of nuance connected to the power of finding your own style. “Anytime I see people quote unquote dressing for their body type, those outfits that look good, they can all be explained through style principles. The rule of thirds, contrast, proportion, texture, color theory. So why do we have to attach a value to a person's body shape when that's not even necessary? I really want to call into question why we use certain language because there's a lot of dismissal of visual language not just in fashion but also in the arts and architecture, and in the spaces that we move that have tremendous impact in how we navigate the world.” -Jennine MARCH THEME — PERSONAL STYLE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN *VANITY* This month, we're shifting the narrative a bit toward the conversation around style. I recently did a post on Instagram about why I post daily outfits and how it's not about vanity, and instead – it's about storytelling, sustainability and branding. It resonated so much with folks and made me feel optimistic amidst a time that can be pretty gloomy lately. I talked about the power of knowing the stories connected to your garments and how that storytelling can come through in the way you wear them. I talked about how when you have intimate connections with your garments, you tend to take care of them so they last longer. I talked about how identifying your personal style is a key part of building your brand, and honing in on the colors you consistently wear can play into determining or realizing your aligned visual identity. I even mentioned the whole “fashion is frivolous” annoying narrative, and how it's totally ridiculous considering how much your clothing choices do actually truly matter. Turns out, that's one of the many topics we crack open with this week's guest. “Is The Internet Messing With Your Style?”, IG reel Kestrel mentions “The Power Dynamics Of Comfort”, IG reel Kestrel mentions “Quiet Luxury Helps The Oligarchy”, IG reel Jennine mentions “Focus in on not just how you want to look, but what you want to say with your style, and why you want to say it.” (40:06) -Jennine Jennine's Website Follow Jennine on Instagram
