On this episode we are delighted to have all-around-knowledgeable-and-thoughtful-food-person, former SF Chronicle food critic, current columnist, and cookbook author Soleil Ho! They talk about the dish bahn khot, and eating it fresh off the griddle while their grandmother kept slinging it out, short order cook-style for many, many grandchildren, and why it's so hard to find a good one outside of Vietnam. We talk about Soleil's journey from a baby gourmand to full-blown professional gourmand, a possible time-travel moment, and braising lamb on a campus full of vegans. Plus cookbooks that are more than instruction manuals, life after being a restaurant critic, and the pleasing excess of the Rancho Gordo Bean club. Bonus: listen for three Vietnamese restaurant recommendations! Bonus-bonus: listen until the end for our impromptu Robocop pod!!

Aujourd'hui ça a beaucoup changé.” "The key is to figure out what you can do that others can't or are unwilling to do. Hard work is a talent. Curiosity is a talent. Patience and empathy are talents." "Helping others makes me feel strong." Scott's recent experience with Ketamine Therapy - "It clarified my thinking. It's helped me stop keeping score. It also made me grateful for my wife. Did you ever get a gift when you were a kid that you weren't expecting and you couldn't afford it? Something you never imagined having.” I got a $45 Banh skateboard from my mom's boyfriend Terry. It was a moment of sheer surprise and joy. My wife kept popping in my head and I kept thinking, god I get to hang out with this person, get to have kids with them, get to build a life with her. It was this overwhelming feeling of wonderful joy and surprise. It was very clarifying and rewarding for me.” "You Gotta Ask" - Scott met his wife at the Raleigh Hotel pool in Miami. He saw her from a distance and promised himself that he wouldn't leave the pool without introducing himself to her first. In order to do anything of significance in your life, you must take an uncomfortable risk." Scott is married to Beata Galloway, a real estate developer born in Germany. Together, they have two sons. One of them has the middle name, Raleigh. Why Crying is Important - "It informs what's important to you." Why Scott uses crude humor - It's used to connect with people. And people are either afraid or not able to do it. When Scott was 13… One of his mom's boyfriends handed him two crisp 100-dollar bills after he asked him about stocks. Terry (his mom's boyfriend) told him “Go buy some stock at one of those fancy brokers in the village." Once there, Scott met a mentor named Cy Gordner who helped him learn about the markets. Show up when it matters — Michael Bloomberg's policy. "If a friend gets a promotion, there is no need to call. You'll get dinner with them at some point. But if a friend gets fired, I have dinner with them that night in a public place where everybody can see me. Because I remember when I got fired from Solomon Brothers — I can tell you every person that called me. That meant something. When I was made partner? I have no recollection of that whatsoever." Last year Scott had 340 inbound speaking requests. He accepted 30 of them. His average rate is $112,000 per speech. “The stimulus that attracted my attention with the most urgency was money, not as a means of establishing economic security, but to feed my addiction: affirmation from others.” The role of Luck - Being born in America in the 1960s and two (most importantly) Scott's mom. Though she was raised in a household with little affection, she couldn't control herself with her son. “For me, affection was the difference between hoping someone thought I was wonderful or worthy and knowing it.” (Emotional) Scott is a dynamic communicator: A turn of phrase is a way of expressing something, in writing or speech, that stands out in some particular way. One of the key indicators of long-term success is the “willingness to endure rejection.” Whether this is walking up to a stranger at the Raleigh hotel, a cold-calling sales job, or asking people to be on your podcast. How to build wealth? Focus (mastery, find your talent), Stoicism (this is about saving more than you spend), Time ( 21 years with your money in low-cost index funds, you will earn 8 times your money), Diversification (Your kevlar). Once you earn some money, assume you are not Steve Ballmer or Mark Zuckerberg. Use a variety of investment vehicles. Going all on one company or asset class is not the optimal choice for most of us.

It's an ocean in SPACE! This is the infamous episode where Tom Paris gets demoted for becoming an eco-terrorist on a planet made entirely out of water. Why? Because the planet's government simply just... doesn't want to fix the problem (even though it's literally fixable). The holobois talk about the value of replicator rations (how many rations would you be willing to spend for a single Banh mi?) and there's some amazing Captain Proton jetpack action as the legendary Delaney Twins join Kim and Paris on... Fusion food is nothing new. On the streets of Vietnam, sidewalk vendors sell a popular sandwich that reflects the country's history in every bite. Banh mi, (Bahn Mee) Vietnam's version of a baguette sandwich, shows the obvious influence of both China and France, countries that had a long presence here. Stop at a street cart some afternoon and treat yourself to a traditional banh mi. Made on an airy baguette spread with mayonnaise—that's the French legacy—the banh mi includes a variety of Vietnamese charcuterie, depending on the maker and the customer. Chinese-style roast pork is customary, but a French-style pâté scented with star anise may be an option, too. Secret sauces are often part of the ritual, with the Vietnamese contribution last: crunchy onions, sliced chilies, fresh herbs and pickled vegetables. Without them, it's not banh mi. The charming seaside town of Vung Tau is just a 2-hour drive or ferry ride from Ho Chi Minh City and is typically regarded as a place just to get away from the city for the weekend to enjoy the fresh sea breeze and ocean views. But, in fact, it's little known that Vung Tau is actually one of the best destinations in Vietnam for foodies. In this episode, your host, Matt, introduces you to 5 of the best 'no name' joints to eat local Vietnamese food that you can only find if you're "in the know!" By the end of this podcast you'll be in the know, too! Find out where some of the best snails can be found under a tree on the corner of a T-intersection that many of the locals don't even know about, or the place where a banh xeo lady spins up to four woks at a time and looks like a DJ spinning tunes at their decks, and discover what the odd looking creature is in a piping hot bowl of bun be be. That and more in this tasty little episode that's educational, fun and downright mouth-watering. The views expressed are her own and do not necessarily represent the views of any organization with which she is affiliated. In this episode of HBC Podcast by MB, I speak with another friend of my brother's, Phong Banh. Phong shared such an interesting story with me about his childhood of growing up in Vietnam with his Chinese family, his experiences with immigration and assimilation, and his new puppy he got during COVID times - I promise it all will make sense. Our conversation led me to highlight the similarities I find between international cultural assimilation and cultural assimilation that takes place right here in our own communities, how language can be used to create barriers, and the connection between language and thought/culture. While lots of the topics I address on this podcast may be deemed controversial, please remember, there is no controversy in one's own experiences. Phong BanhPhong Banh is the Director of IT at Montgomery College in Maryland and also serves as an adjunct faculty member teaching computer science. Before he was born, his parents fled China in and settled in Vietnam where they had 10 children. Banh, the youngest, recalls leaving Vietnam to go to a refugee holding center in the Philippines before arriving to the United States at the age of 10, speaking minimal English. He provides an interesting perspective on language acquisition based on his personal experience with immigration and growing up in a cross-cultural and multi-generational Chinese family in the US.Music for this episode is Like Honey by Dr. Delight provided by soundstripe.com.Cover artwork and design by Katrina Langland and Eloise Stewart.***************************Here are some interesting resources to check out that highlight cultural assimilation at home:Language, Culture and Assimilation Assimilation and Language Finally, an article on how much does our language determine behaviorDON'T FORGET TO...Join the HoneyBee Connection Facebook page for more information and news about language, culture, and communication.

Today’s episode of On the Fly is with Trinh Banh, a co-founder of Good Good Eatz, an ad hoc initiative that has sprung up to help support Oakland Chinatown businesses in a number of impactful ways during these extremely challenging times. They’re helping immigrant-owned businesses get set up on social media, providing marketing assistance, PPE and protocols, and even creating new systems and business models. Working with Tommy Wong of Chinatown Improvement, these two can-do, roll up your sleeves, get ‘er done folks have sprung into action in many ways, including creating a Fund A Lunch program, designed to provide meals to communities in need from neighborhood food businesses that also need support, many of them struggling weeks before the shelter-in-place was announced. In this interview, you’ll hear how Trinh and Tommy are nimbly customizing their support and solutions for each business. Their grassroots model is applicable to many immigrant-dense neighborhoods who really need extra assistance and attention right nowGood Good Eatz is attracting an ever-growing group of volunteers offering their services and talents and skills, which goes to show how many people want to help in some way during these traumatic times, to contribute to something greater than themselves. We can help in many ways, and it can be easy: whether we go visit one of these places mentioned for take-out, follow them on their new Instagram account, order some cookies for a friend, contribute financially to Fund a Lunch or Save Our Chinatowns or directly to a restaurant’s GoFundMe, or even sharing this podcast with your friends, thanks. Anybody who s followed the New Orleans food scene over the past few years would likely have noticed the proliferation of Vietnamese restaurants across the city. Food that was once found only in Vietnamese enclaves on the West Bank or in the East is now found in restaurants, grocery stores, and even growing in gardens throughout the greater New Orleans area. Local filmmaker writer Suzanne Pfeferle sought to shed some insight on that trend with a documentary produced in 2012, and more recently with her just released book, Vietnamese Cuisine of New Orleans. This week on VietNOLA, Suzanne visits with us about her new book, shares some insight about Vietnamese culture, and more specifically about a cuisine that spent many years under the radar, but has more recently become an important part of our New Orleans food culture.
