In my 20 years living in Los Angeles, I've noticed a pattern. If you grow up on the West Coast, there's always a pull to return to the Pacific time zone. For Oregon State quarterback Maalik Murphy, coming back West wasn't what he initially envisioned as one of the top quarterbacks in the Class of 2022 out of Serra High School in Gardena, California. But after stops at Texas and Duke, the gifted QB has found his way back, now leading the Oregon State Beavers. With spring ball in full swing across the country, we're excited to welcome Maalik to the Y-Option podcast for the first time, presented by our founding partner 76.Oregon State football has always been built on successful quarterback play complimenting a strong run game with a tough defense and an incredible fan base. Now, in Year 2 under Trent Bray, the Beavers are in position to make some serious noise out West.I still remember my first trip to Corvallis. It was 2006, my 2nd year coaching at USC. We rolled into Reser Stadium as the No. 3 team in the country, only to leave with a 33-31 loss and the sound of chainsaws ringing in our ears. That game wasn't my first introduction to the Beavs, though. I had already faced them as a player in the 2002 Insight Bowl while starting for Pitt. We won, and freshman Larry Fitzgerald became a household name that night. But what stuck with me was Oregon State's identity - tough, disciplined, and relentless.Fast forward to today, and the man leading the Beavers is a familiar name. Bray was a linebacker on that 2002 team and now holds his dream job as Oregon State's head coach. And this offseason, he might have landed his dream quarterback. When the Pac-12 reshaped itself last season, skeptics doubted whether the Beavers could land an elite quarterback in the transfer portal. But Beaver Nation proved them wrong. Coach Bray, offensive coordinator/QB coach Ryan Gunderson, and the Oregon State staff made their pitch, and one of the hottest names in the portal chose them. As Maalik shared with me on Y-Option, he's never been happier, or more confident.Hearing that was special. Maalik Murphy is the type of leader young quarterbacks should look up to - a model of resilience and perseverance. We hope you enjoy today's conversation. And to those of you in our Y-Option paid community - thank you for your continued support.Back to spring ball film study!Much love and Stay Steady,YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor RenThis podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. Welcome to the second season of our podcast. The quote for this episode is from Dick Tomey "We want to be known for the way we play, not the way we look." Dick Tomey Jeff Hammerschmidt has coached on the collegiate level since 1991 with previous stops at Cal Poly, Montana, Saint Mary's, Indiana, Southern Utah, Colorado state, and Arizona. He was a coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 2016 to 2020, finishing his career as the assistant special team's coach of the New York Jets. Over his five years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 23-57-0. Hammerschmidt coached the linebackers at Cal Poly in 2005. From 2003-04, he was Montana's defensive coordinator and secondary coach that followed a three-season stint at Saint Mary's (2000-02) as the Gaels' defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. You can find coach Hammerschmidt at Syracuse as special teams analyst. He spent two seasons (1998-99) at Indiana coaching outside linebackers and special teams after two years as the defensive coordinator at Southern Utah (1996-97). He began his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant under Dick Tomey in 1992. He was Arizona's defensive backs coach from 1993-95, helping the Wildcats lead the nation in passing defense in 1995. Hammerschmidt, who earned a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Arizona in 1991, was a four-year letter-winner (1987-90) and two-time All-Pac-10 selection as a defensive back for the Wildcats. He helped his team to two bowl games (1989 Insight Bowl, 1990 Aloha Bowl), and was selected to play in the Japan Bowl and Hula Bowl following his senior season. He went on to play for the Los Angeles Rams during their 1991 training camp and for the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World League in 1992 under head coach Jack Elway. The San Diego native graduated from Helix High School, where he was chosen as one of the Top 100 all-time high school football players from the San Diego area by the San Diego Union-Tribune. Hammerschmidt and his wife, Felicity, have one daughter, Bryn (born May 6, 2005) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lifeacpov/support
Mizzou faced Iowa in the Insight Bowl on this day in 2010.
A six-foot-tall wide receiver is essentially an underdog by definition. But this week's Moonlighter made his name by being willing to do whatever it took to get his on the field. Catching passes, running reverses, special teams, even throwing the ball, Josh Lenz was willing to do it all. Lenz was a Dubuque Hempstead standout who was a fan favorite for the Iowa State Cyclones and ended his pro career one play away from playing on Sundays. Lenz was a three-sport standout for the Mustangs. In addition to being a star running back and safety, Lenz burned it up on the track and the hardwood. In spite of growing up a Hawkeye fan, Gene Chizik and the Cyclones were his only D-I football option. Paul Rhoads took over the program before Lenz set foot on campus. In his 4 years, Lenz did his part to convert some Eastern Iowans to Cyclone fans. Though Lenz ended his career as a Cyclone at 24-27, his 4-year run included some of the biggest wins in Cyclone history. The first of which was a 9-6 win over Nebraska in Lincoln in 2009. That 2009 season was capped with a win in the Insight Bowl over Minnesota. 2010 had the road win over #22 Texas Longhorns and 2011 had the road win over #19 Texas Tech. The biggest win in Lenz's career, and perhaps Cyclone football history, was the November 2011 overtime victory in Ames over #2 Oklahoma State. Lenz was a critical part of the highs of the Rhoads years in Ames and gave Cyclones a lot of great memories. After a successful college career, including a perfect passer rating (going 2-2 with 2 touchdowns) Lenz put his name on some NFL boards with his performance at the ISU pro-day. After going undrafted in the 2012 draft, Lenz was picked up by the Chicago Bears. His pro career included stops with the Seahawks, Browns, Colts, and Texans. His time as Colt included being put on the active roster for the 2014 playoff game against the New England Patriots. His opportunities in the NFL were limited by injuries and AC joint problems ended his career when he was with the Houston Texans.

2015 New Era Pinstripe Bowl: Duke 44 Indiana 41 F/OT This podcast recorded by Jordan Maly AKA Jordan the intern podcast on Pinstripe Bowl In a stunning turn of events, Indiana University ends their season in recognizable fashion, missing a field goal in overtime to lose the 2015 New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium Saturday. The best kicker in the Big Ten, Griffen Oakes, misses 2 field goals on Saturday after only missing one the entire regular season. The most important and controversial miss came in overtime when the ball sailed over the top upright declaring that the field was no good. The play was also unreviewable, which Oakes clearly argued that he made. The loss for Indiana is about more than just the missed field goal, but the inability to stop the run. Duke rushed for 373 yards compared to Indiana's 278 yards on the day. The ability to stop the run has been a frustration for IU's defense the whole entire season. Closing out games for IU has been difficult and heartbreaking. With that said, this season has been a success. IU makes their first bowl game since the Insight Bowl in December of 2007 where they suffered a 49-33 loss to Oklahoma State. Playing without first-team All-Big Ten running back Jordan Howard seemed to be an incredible loss to football fans that are unfamiliar with the depth of Indiana. MVP of the Pinstripe Bowl would have to go to RB Devine Redding. His statistics are as followed (impressive):
