Daniel Newton is a professor of management and entrepreneurship at the University of Iowa. His research, which is regularly published in premier management journals, focuses on speaking up and staying engaged at work. A recipient of an eight-year NASA grant, he has conducted research with astronauts aboard the International Space Station, isolated crews in Houston, and cosmonauts in the Mars training facility in Moscow. Stop trying to rapidly switch between tasks all day. Actually listen to the person in front of us. Because creativity, connection, and even joy don't come from constant stimulation or attention switching—they come from focusing on the people in front of us.

Our air was getting cleaner. Now, wildfire smoke has reversed that progress. On this episode, a new University of Iowa study finds wildfires have undone years of gains against ground-level ozone pollution, and the effects are reaching deep into the Midwest. First, we hear from former Iowa residents Jerry and Sue Prothero, who watched ash fall like snow in northern Minnesota. Then, we talk with Jun Wang, the study's lead author, about why ozone pollution is worsening and what it means for Iowans. We also talk with Peter Thorne of the University of Iowa College of Public Health about the health impacts of wildfire smoke and ozone pollution. And we address the health and air quality impacts of a proposed gas plant in Linn County with Abe Kellison of Save Morgan Valley. Each conversation is a chance to hear firsthand how these decision makers tackle new challenges, rethink traditional models, and collaborate across sectors. Today's episode features the next conversation from the 2025 Charleston Conference Leadership Interview Series.  Heather Staines, Senior Consultant, Delta Think, and a Conference Director, talks with Lucy Santos Green, Director, Professor, School of Library and Information Science, University of Iowa. In this conversation, Lucy shares with Heather the myriad of details of her current role, which she says involves working with faculty to develop and implement the SLIS (school of library and information science) strategic plan, leading innovation in the curriculum and making sure that it responds to current market needs, managing the school's budget, all of the financial allocations, overseeing facilities,  hiring, performance evaluations for staff, tenure and promotion for faculty, HR resources and awards associated with SLIS, promoting and fund raising, encouraging and advocating for faculty and students, establishing and maintaining strong external partnerships and making sure that everyone is living and experiencing a welcoming and fair work and educational environment. Lucy also shares what her middle school librarian did that made her want to be a librarian, her later career journey from being a choir teacher into librarianship, and the overlap between these two jobs.   She went on to earn her MLIS at Texas Women's University and later a doctorate at Texas Tech in Instructional Technology with a focus on technology enabled learning and online pedagogy and became a professor of instructional technology.  Lucy also talks about the session in which she presented at the 2025 Charleston Conference. Many Midwest residents distrust their tap water, opting to purchase water and ice from standalone kiosks. University of Iowa researchers recently found that these kiosks may contain at least trace amounts of lead. Rachel Schnelle investigated this research on behalf of the Midwest Newsroom. Tristan Spurlock is in his third season as the director of player development/assistant coach with the University of Iowa men's basketball program.In his two seasons on staff, Spurlock has helped the Hawkeyes to 38 victories and two postseason appearances (1 NCAA, 1 NIT). He has coached one All-American, a Big Ten Freshman and Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year and 10 All-Big Ten honorees.During the 2023-24 season, Iowa won 19 games, including 10 in Big Ten play, to finish in a tie for sixth in the league standings. Five players earned All-Big Ten honors with Tony Perkins earning second team honors and Payton Sandfort being a third-team honoree. Owen Freeman became the second Hawkeye all-time (and first in 30 years) to be named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.In his first season on staff, Spurlock helped the Hawkeyes qualify for the NCAA Tournament with 19 wins and place fifth in the Big Ten. He helped five players achieve postseason recognition, including third-team consensus All-American Kris Murray. While in Iowa City Pat brings on University of Iowa legend Dallas Clark to juice up the live audience. They get right into the action from last night, diving into the big games in college basketball. Joining the progrum is Jack Gohlke from the University of Oakland to talk about his team nocking off Kentucky to move onto the second round and his performance shooting from deep. They finish off the hour talking about the upcoming NFL Draft class and closing the hour with Dallas Clark's opinion and expectations for Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Women's team. Coming back from a quick break, Pat and Dallas dive deep into the NFL talk discussing the latest rumors and news. While in Iowa the boys jump into potential first round pick and Iowa football stand out Cooper DeJean. The show then pivots back to the subject of March Madness as they give their insights on the women's tournament and Iowa's chances at winning it all. To end the second hour Pat brings on the legendary Iowa Hawkeyes marching band to perform and juice up the crowd.
