In my 20 years living in Los Angeles, I've noticed a pattern. If you grow up on the West Coast, there's always a pull to return to the Pacific time zone. For Oregon State quarterback Maalik Murphy, coming back West wasn't what he initially envisioned as one of the top quarterbacks in the Class of 2022 out of Serra High School in Gardena, California. But after stops at Texas and Duke, the gifted QB has found his way back, now leading the Oregon State Beavers. With spring ball in full swing across the country, we're excited to welcome Maalik to the Y-Option podcast for the first time, presented by our founding partner 76.Oregon State football has always been built on successful quarterback play complimenting a strong run game with a tough defense and an incredible fan base. Now, in Year 2 under Trent Bray, the Beavers are in position to make some serious noise out West.I still remember my first trip to Corvallis. It was 2006, my 2nd year coaching at USC. We rolled into Reser Stadium as the No. 3 team in the country, only to leave with a 33-31 loss and the sound of chainsaws ringing in our ears. That game wasn't my first introduction to the Beavs, though. I had already faced them as a player in the 2002 Insight Bowl while starting for Pitt. We won, and freshman Larry Fitzgerald became a household name that night. But what stuck with me was Oregon State's identity - tough, disciplined, and relentless.Fast forward to today, and the man leading the Beavers is a familiar name. Bray was a linebacker on that 2002 team and now holds his dream job as Oregon State's head coach. And this offseason, he might have landed his dream quarterback. When the Pac-12 reshaped itself last season, skeptics doubted whether the Beavers could land an elite quarterback in the transfer portal. But Beaver Nation proved them wrong. Coach Bray, offensive coordinator/QB coach Ryan Gunderson, and the Oregon State staff made their pitch, and one of the hottest names in the portal chose them. As Maalik shared with me on Y-Option, he's never been happier, or more confident.Hearing that was special. Maalik Murphy is the type of leader young quarterbacks should look up to - a model of resilience and perseverance. We hope you enjoy today's conversation. And to those of you in our Y-Option paid community - thank you for your continued support.Back to spring ball film study!Much love and Stay Steady,YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor RenThis podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. Oregon fans harbored hopes of watching the Ducks play in the national championship game on Monday in Atlanta. That dream was crushed about three plays into the Rose Bowl as Ohio State overwhelmed Oregon, bringing an abrupt end to one of the best seasons in program history. With the Buckeyes now in the championship game against Notre Dame after edging Texas in the Cotton Bowl, many Ducks fans may be asking themselves this question: Who do we root for now? On this week's episode of the Oregonian Sports podcast, hosts Bill Oram and Brenna Greene debate that question and come to different conclusions. Also on this week's show: • Looking ahead to Oregon State's first basketball game against Gonzaga in Brenna's lifetime • Was it a good idea for Beavers head coach Trent Bray to appoint himself defensive coordinator, too? • Should Scoot Henderson's career-best performance against Brooklyn be seen as a sign of progress for the young Blazers star or thrown out as an anomaly? It's Rivalry Week out West and we have you covered at Y-Option.USC visits the Rose Bowl for an iconic game in Los Angeles against the Bruins with stakes locally, and the postseason for both teams is on the line. Stanford heads across the Bay to visit Cal in The Big Game in what should be a packed house at Memorial Stadium as the Bears hope to clinch a bowl berth. Oregon State hosts Washington State in a game pitting two Pac-12 schools who, over the past 12 months, have navigated adversity unseen in college sports and we welcomed the man who will be the sideline analyst on The CW for the Cougs vs. Beavs, Nigel Burton, to the latest episode of Y-Option presented by our founding partner 76.I've known Nigel for years, having broadcast his first game as the head coach at Portland State and was fortunate to have him as a colleague for over a decade at the Pac-12 Network. We dove into the game, both Trent Bray and Jake Dickert's role as each school's respective head coach and what his year has been like at the CW. In addition, Nigel unearthed what it's like to be a parent of a college football player, as his son Jace is a freshman defensive back at Nigel's alma mater, Washington.Jim Thornby and I thoughtfully react to the latest CFP rankings, discuss #5 Indiana visiting #2 Ohio State and a huge weekend in the Big 12. Can #16 Colorado keep it going? Will #21 ASU take the next step toward a Big 12 title berth as they host #14 BYU? Can Utah play spoiler to #22 Iowa State on Senior Night at Rice-Eccles?I'm off to D.C. as Maryland hosts Iowa in a B1G game at 9a PST in a game that has two teams that play completely different styles of football. There are only two weekends for the majority of fans in college football to watch your team compete. Our advice, lean into it and enjoy every moment as you'll be yearning for football season to return in a matter of weeks once the regular season ends. Finally, the Pullman community lost a special young man this past weekend. 13-year-old Zion Bischoff passed away in an automobile accident and his impact on so many people has been celebrated. Please consider supporting the Bischoff family as they process this tragedy by visiting their GoFundMe page, Washington State will be wearing “ZB” patches on their helmets this weekend to honor Zion, who was close with many of the coaches' children. Our hearts go out to his family and friends, as we lost a beautiful soul far too soon.Much love,YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor RenThis podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. Every week from the West Coast we hope to bring you thoughtful conversations, insight and analysis in college football. Thanks to our founding partner 76, today we welcome a repeat guest in Oregon State head coach Trent Bray. In a season full of injuries and adversity, the Beavers head coach continues to lead his program with an optimistic and determined approach. With so many young players, I think the benefit will be seen in coming years, specifically in Year 1 of the rebuilt Pac-12 in 2026. We dive into that with Coach Bray, as well as what has been the most enjoyable and most challenging elements in the first year of his career as a head coach. How about Year 1 of the new look B1G?! On Saturday. the nation saw Dan Lanning's aggressive style in full effect once again. It reminded me of Pete Carroll back in the day. To be that aggressive, you must trust that your team has the capacity to handle either side of the result. Jim Thornby and I break that down, as well as the upside down Big 12, with coach of the year candidates Deion Sanders and Kenny Dillingham. We also dig into the Heisman, the embarrassing nonconference opponents in the SEC this weekend, Week 12's Go Go Go Award winners presented by 76 and explore this year's matchup in the Pac-12 with Washington State and Oregon State. It's Week 13 folks, let's not miss a moment!Much love and many thanks,YogiThis episode was executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor RenThis podcast is a Best Coast Media productionY-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. It's Rivalry Week! No, that is not a typo and yes, it's Rivalry Week in the Pacific Northwest and in the Pac-12 Conference. For the first time ever, these 2 games will be played in September. The Oregon State Beavers host the Oregon Ducks in the 128th meeting of the game formerly known as the Civil War. This is the 7th most played match-up in college football history and tied for 2nd at the FBS level. The Washington State Cougars and the Washington Huskies meet up at Lumen Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks, in the 116th Apple Cup. This will be the 2nd time this matchup will take place in this stadium as the renovation of Husky Stadium forced the move in 2011.And with realignment still fresh in all four fan bases minds, there is even more spice added to these epic rivalries. It's human nature and it's part of the new world of college football.I've been at both of these games over the years and was on the broadcast for an Oregon State/Oregon game just a few years ago. The energy is different, the passion is through the roof and the distaste for one another is exactly what you'd imagine. This year, it's safe to assume that the vitriol from the Cougs and Beavs fan bases will be even higher. We've been saying for months now that the Cougs and Beavs are America's Teams, and this weekend the nation gets to see them on a grand stage. Washington State is fresh off a dominant win over the Big-12's Texas Tech, where the legendary coach Mike Leach was inducted into the WSU Hall of Fame. The Beavs also sit at 2-0 and are playing exactly how Trent Bray hopes - controlling the clock, running the rock and winning at the line of scrimmage. So welcome to Week 3 as we welcome in first year head coach Trent Bray to the show for a thoughtful conversation, presented by our founding partner 76, about his team in advance of the #9 Oregon Ducks. This Saturday will be his 14th meeting as a member of this rivalry, 4 as a player and 9 as a coach. His expertise in this game is unmatched among anyone associated with it this year and he shared with us exactly how he is talking to his team about this game, what Reser Stadium will feel like at kickoff and how his team has approached the week of preparation. Also, Jim Thornby and I reflect on what went down in Week 2 on the West Coast and how this side of the country is picking up where it left off last year – winning –as Cal, ASU and others earned key victories over the weekend. Be sure to check out our weekly Go Go Go Awards, presented by 76 as we will announce those each Monday this fall. As always, thank you for the support around this new endeavor, it's been better than we could have imagined and it's not possible without your support! This episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media production.
