Surviving the Horror - Episode 12: Dead Space 2

Hello hello there everybody, and welcome back to another episode of Surviving the Horror. This month, Josh and Colin are joined by resident lore expert for all things Dead Space, Kevin from the PlayStation Plus Game Club! Kevin is a massive fan of the Dead Space series in general, and after recording the episode last July on Dead Space Remake, it didn't feel right to venture further into the series without his input. The result is that the three of us had an over three hour discussion, breaking down all the important details, subtle audio notes, and larger mechanical trends that are present in Dead Space 2. Dead Space 2 released in January 2011 as the highly anticipated follow up to Visceral's Dead Space. The game sees the continuation of Isaac Clarke's journey following the catastrophic tragedy aboard the Ishimura. From the very beginning of Dead Space 2, Isaac, as well as the player, are thrust into chaos and the unknown as another Necromorph outbreak has seemingly begun aboard The Sprawl, a massive station orbiting the once moon of Saturn, Titan. Due to the size and scope of The Sprawl compared with the Ishimura, everything in Dead Space 2 is cranked up to eleven. The mystery, the action, the set pieces, and indeed the lore are all expanded upon greatly. Just why is Isaac in a straight jacket upon waking up? What are the four steps to run "the machine" that your companion Stross keeps talking about? Can you truly trust anyone associated with Earth Gov. or The Church of Unitology? Only through quick wits, persistence, and a butt load of ammo will you get the answers. We truly hope that you enjoy this episode, and a special thank you to Kevin for being a part of the show! Next month on Surviving the Horror will be joined by none other than the GreenGorillaGamer to discuss the first entry in the FNAF series. It's going to be a wild ride. Until then take care everyone!

Dead Space 2 diverts from Dead Space 1 and how it scares the player. Dead Space 1, The Xbox 360 game felt more like a ghost train, more quiet areas, focusing more on creeping round corners to suddenly be pounced on by Necromorphs. The first game felt like it had shooting and dismemberment as a survival tool as well as a storytelling mechanic. Dead Space 2 in comparison though, is more interested in panic. It's more full on and it drives the player to panic through areas of combat and fear by throwing waves of Necromorphs in their path. Returning to The Ishimura... must be one of the most horrific experiences we've had in games... Isaac Clarke awakens aboard The Sprawl; A floating space colony built into the remains of the moon of Titan circling Saturn only to find himself in the midst of a second Necromorph rampage. The entirety of Titan Station is a blood soaked massacre of limbs! Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.03.281675v1?rss=1 Authors: Terrey, M., Adamson, S. I., Gibson, A. L., Deng, T., Ishimura, R., Chuang, J. H., Ackerman, S. L. Abstract: Ribosome-associated quality control pathways respond to defects in translational elongation to recycle arrested ribosomes and degrade aberrant polypeptides and mRNAs. Loss of an individual tRNA gene leads to ribosomal pausing that is resolved by the translational GTPase GTPBP2, and in its absence causes neuron death. Here we show that loss of the homologous protein GTPBP1 during tRNA deficiency in the mouse brain also leads to codon-specific ribosome pausing and neurodegeneration, suggesting that these non-redundant translational GTPases function in the same pathway to mitigate ribosome pausing. Ribosome stalling in the mutant brain led to activation of the integrated stress response (ISR) mediated by GCN2 and decreased mTORC1 signaling. However, in contrast to the ISR, which enhanced neuron survival, reduced mTORC1 signaling increased neuronal death. Our data demonstrate that GTPBP1 functions as an important quality control mechanism during translation elongation and suggest that translational signaling pathways intricately interact to regulate neuronal homeostasis during defective translation elongation.

In honor of the day of all things spooky-scary we're turning to the game that took up Resident Evil 4's third-person horror mantle and mixed it with Alien and Event Horizon. Dead Space released in 2008 and garnered numerous accolades for its tense sound, tight level design, and its unique focus on dismembering monsters. Some reviewers and fans at the time crowned Dead Space as the scariest game of all time. Though that title might have since been given to other games, Dead Space still holds its share of horror. but is that enough for it to be a best game period?
