Many experts today say we're in the midst of the 6th mass extinction, a relatively short period of time when a high percentage of biodiversity dies out. To be clear, we're talking about hundreds of thousands of species and an extinction event bigger than anything our planet has seen for over 65 million years when dinosaurs walked the earth. A recent study in the journal, Science, looked at 30 years of research across hundreds of species and showed the close link between climate change and biodiversity loss. It projects that if we can achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, 1 in 50 species will go extinct by the end of the century. Meanwhile, if current emission trends continue, mass extinction could claim as many as 1 in 3 species on Earth. Sorry to start with such sobering data, but the threat to biodiversity is not talked about enough and the stakes need to be known. There is, of course, hope and it lies with people like Brett Jenks. Brett is the CEO of a global conservation and climate change nonprofit called Rare. They've been around for 50 years, work in 60 different countries, and yet, are often behind the scenes. Rare has helped save species and ecosystems, and through that work have learned that their approach can contribute to systemic change. For them, it all begins with understanding people and how to change our behavior. I spoke with Brett about his background, Rare's approach and impact, their conservation efforts, and how they're working upstream to change finance, policy, and culture. Despite the stakes and the difficult challenge we face, I found this conversation to be quite inspiring and I certainly learned a ton from Brett. Enjoy. Frank Dixon is an expert on Systems Change.  He has been interested in sustainability since his MBA, joined one of the first ESG research firms, saw ESG wasn't enough, and has been working on system change ever since.  Our conversation traces the evolution of Frank's thinking around the need for system change and what this actually means. He established Global System Change and developed the System Change Investing (SCI) approach. It provided the first model for rating companies on system change performance and integrating system change into corporate sustainability strategies. He also developed a true whole system approach to sustainability, described in the Global System Change books. It provides systemic solutions for all major areas of society. In the financial and corporate sectors, SCI offers the most advanced and effective sustainability strategies. We discuss the rising pushback against responsible investing/corporate sustainability and Frank argues that current approaches were not coming close to resolving SDG problems, even under supportive administrations.   He now is of the opinion that system change will dominate the sustainability field at some point, arguing that as our systems continue to break down and cause growing problems for companies, investors and society, we'll realize that we must change them to turn things around and avoid catastrophic collapse.  This podcast is brought to you with the kind support of Longview Productions.

Freedom from Command and Control was the very first book choice on the Aural Apothecary and its themes of failure demand, systems thinking and value have featured heavily on the show ever since. It is a real pleasure therefore this week to welcome its author, John Seddon.  John Seddon is an occupational psychologist and author, specialising in the service industry. He is the managing director of Vanguard the inventor of 'The Vanguard Method', the means by which his organisation helps service leaders transform their organisations from conventional command-and-control designs to systems designs, achieving remarkable results. Seddon's prominence grew following attacks on conventional management thinking, sometimes referred to as New Public Management, including: the belief in economies of scale, quality standards and much of public sector reform including 'deliverology', the use of targets, inspection and centralised control of local services. The Daily Telegraph described him as a "reluctant management guru".As expected, our conversation with John was thought provoking and challenging. John does not hold back in his analysis of the current state of healthcare in the UK and the often failed attempts to fix it. How do we fix our broken medicines management systems? How much do our attempts to fix things actually make things worse? What can we do to ‘unlearn' what we think we know in order to understand the system from the patient's perspective? Can we really save the NHS in 10 weeks…?In our micro-discussion we discuss Operational failures in general practice: a consensus-building study on the priorities for improvement (https://bjgp.org/content/74/742/e339). The discussion offers Paul and Jamie the opportunity to reflect on their own attempt to apply systems thinking to a GP practice in South Wales. As with all of our guests, John shares with us (albeit reluctantly!) his Memory Evoking Medicine, a career anthem and book that has influenced their career or life. Can this method reduce costs by 75% ? Here is the video referenced by Gimmo and John that highlights a real-life example of the systems approach in action https://vimeo.com/943283319. John has recently published a Manifesto on Re-Thinking Regulation https://beyondcommandandcontrol.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Manifesto_bk.pdf which promises to improve public sector productivity and morale. You can listen to the Aural Apothecary playlist here; https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3OsWj4w8sxsvuwR9zMXgn5?si=tiHXrQI7QsGtSQwPyz1KBg You can view the Aural Apothecary Library here;   https://litalist.com/shelf/view-bookcase?publicId=KN6E3OOur website is https://www.theauralapothecary.com/  To get in touch follow us on Twitter and Instagram @auralapothecary or email us at auralapothecarypod@gmail.com .Don't forget to rate us and comment wherever you have got this podcast from.

System Change Aotearoa have kindly provided us the audio from their 20 August 2024 public meeting about a radical left party in NZ. Enjoy!Do we need a new party of the radical left? This is a crucial question facing anticapitalists in Aotearoa today. We live in an era of extreme inequality. The threat of climate breakdown looms over everything. Yet governments around the world sit idly by as the rich get richer and the climate crisis worsens. On the left, we see a clear explanation for this: the capitalist system is designed to always prioritise corporate profits over people and planet. Yet right-wing populism is on the rise, scapegoating minorities for society's problems. Aotearoa now has the most right-wing government in decades, pursuing an agenda of austerity whilst attacking Te Tiriti. We must organise to fight back. But do we need a new party to do this?System Change Aotearoa is excited to host Sue Bradford to speak on this vital topic. Sue is a lifelong activist who has been fighting for working people for decades. She will be drawing on her experience as a former Green Party MP and candidate for Mana, as she shares her thoughts on why a new party is necessary.Sue published a paper on this subject in 2017. She argued that the role of such a party is not merely to stand in elections. We are talking about a party which seeks to organise the resistance to capitalism across society, in workplaces and in the streets, and in Parliament only when it is strategic to do so.Elliot Crossan will be speaking on behalf of System Change. He will be speaking on the rebirth of the radical left across the world in the last decade, and why the time for a new party is right.Website: systemchange.nz FB: facebook.com/systemchangenz Insta: instagram.com/systemchangeaotearoa Twitter: twitter.com/systemchangenz

Why did the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) not inform the elected school board of the reporting issues? The ACLU WI says Wisconsin prisons and Department of Corrections (DOC) are breaking the law and are asking a court to order them to set up a program for women in prison to keep physical custody of their children. Wisconsin Supreme Court suspends fake elector co-conspirator Jim Troupis from the Judicial Commission. Rich, white and privileged - the creative arts sector has a class problem. Particularly in class-obsessed Britain, where middle-class people are twice as likely to work in creative jobs than their working class contemporaries. According to the Evening Standard, "the worlds of TV, film, music and the arts are dominated by straight, able-bodied white men living in London, despite them only accounting for 3.5% of the [UK] population."Not that this is purely a UK problem. In New York, 85% of artists represented by commercial galleries are white. In Australia, where one in four of us were born overseas, culturally and linguistically diverse creatives are still barely represented in fashion at all. And consider the global luxury brands, with their spate of recent cookie-cutter creative director hires - can anyone actually tell the difference between these men from their photos alone? But, "What about the new editor at Vogue?" I hear you say. Too often, the celebrated hire is still the only Black or brown person in the room.I bet you can think of a thousand places where career progress is affected by your postcode, where you went to school and what your parents did. And lurking behind all that: race, gender, sexuality, difference, not to mention how much cash you've got...It's time for a power shift!Meet Rahemur Rahman, a British-Bengali artist, educator and designer who is determined to change the system, not simply tinker round the edges of representation. He made it, despite the odds. Raised in working class Tower Hamlets, he studied fashion at Central Saint MartinsHe studied fashion at Central Saint Martins, where he now teaches. Designs from his debut London Fashion Week collection menswear collection were acquired by the V&A Museum. Now, he's the director of training and development at Bari, a new incubator supporting South Asian creatives in East London as part of the British Bangladeshi Fashion Council. This is a lively conversation about what it takes to, practically, turn things around - not just talk about it. Hint: no true diversity and inclusion without addressing the class barrier! We're also talking the creative innovation meets heritage craft, social impact fashion, holidays with friends, and the joy of working on what matters.Check the shownotes for links & further reading.Tell us what you think! A conversation with Anthony Myint, co-founder and executive director of Zero Foodprint. Award winning chef, Myint was disappointed about his impact on acres by his farm to table restaurants and he is now fully committed to systems change. Koen and Anthony talk about how to really move the needle on many more new practice acres which are acres where regenerative practices are used for the first time, opting out mechanisms where a small opt out fee is added to restaurant bills and food products, collective regeneration, and much more. When Anthony traded his chef's hat for the mantle of environmental advocate, the culinary world didn't just lose a master of the kitchen—it gained a potent champion for the planet. This episode brings you the powerful narrative of a food industry insider who realized his farm-to-table establishments were merely a drop in the regenerative agriculture bucket. Now, he's on a mission to create waves of change through strategic partnerships and investing directly into soil and ecosystem revival. The gastronomic landscape is ripe for revolution, and Zero Footprint is leading the charge. Anthony lifts the veil on the potential of opt-out fees—a simple yet surprisingly effective tool for gathering communal resources to nourish our ailing earth.  With his rich tapestry of experience, Anthony guides us through the complexities of regenerative grazing, the importance of local policies in supporting farmers, and the need for robust investment in compost infrastructure.---------------------------------------------------Join our Gumroad community, discover the tiers and benefits on www.gumroad.com/investinginregenag. Support our work:Share itGive a 5-star ratingBuy us a coffee… or a meal! www.Ko-fi.com/regenerativeagriculture----------------------------------------------------More about this episode on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/anthony-myint.Find our video course on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/course.----------------------------------------------------The above references an opinion and is for information and educational purposes only. Send us a Text Message. What does it mean to be a physician in a system that often overlooks the mental health of its staff? I, your host, found myself pondering over this existential question as I sat down with Larry Schwarm, a man touched by the tragic loss of his wife, Dr. Peg Bicker, a revered physician who sadly took her own life in 2019. Driven by the weight of his loss, and motivated by the memory of Peg's enduring commitment to her patients, Larry and I embark on a poignant exploration of the taboo topic of physician suicide, the stigmatization of mental health in the medical field, and the relentless issue of physician burnout. Grappling with the complex, unforgiving landscape of the medical practice, we dissect the systemic issues that contribute to physician burnout - inadequate reimbursement for patient care, intricate coding and quota systems, and the onerous burden of electronic medical records. We delve into the poignant narrative of Peg's battle with depression, revealing the unseen side of a woman who, despite her struggles, was deeply committed to her patients. Larry's experience provides a window into the toll these systemic issues can take on physicians like Peg and opens up a conversation on the need for significant structural changes. As we navigate the intricacies of this topic, we underscore the urgency for improved professional training for physicians and the unforeseen benefits of a business background in running a medical practice. Our discussion serves as a clarion call for systemic change - a plea to the healthcare industry to safeguard its physicians from the hardships Peg had to endure. Through the heartache of Peg's passing, Larry and I hope to inspire necessary conversations and vital changes. Individually, we can do small things but connecting with kindred spirits in organizations can make a difference in not only overcoming isolation but can lead to changes in consciousness and positive initiatives. Jamie shares how the results of resourcing politicians with skills rooted in empathy and connection is filtering into public and political spheres showing promising green shoots of policy and system changes. Together they explore how mindfulness can create vital mindset shifts needed to tackle the climate crisis. Jamie reveals what inner qualities we can cultivate, how we can bring them into mainstream culture to make them accessible as micro and macro acts of activism and to build movements of change that ripple across our global communities.  We learn that we can understand the climate crisis as a relationship crisis.
