verything’s an Ad nowadays (#notanAd) and the constant outpour of late-stage capitalism getting pumped out through our screens and on our pages has objectively reached a point of Ad nauseam (sorry, we just couldn’t resist.) In all seriousness, though, if there’s one form of entertainment that’s fueled by marketing magic more than any other medium, it’s video games, and there are generations upon generations of material to take a look back at and examine the expansive world of Video Game advertisements via printed ads and broadcast commercials. Join George, Sean, Andrew, and special guest Peter Skerrit as they examine nearly 50 years of promotional material and discuss some of the memorable, or more accurately, psychologically impactful ads that have embedded themselves deep into the minds of these middle-aged game junkies. From the edgy attack Ads of the 90’s to the arthouse schlock of the late aughts, we’ve got all of the deep cuts for you, as we can’t help but feel nostalgic for the shameless sales pitches of old and the levels of showmanship that Video Game advertisements used to have back then before giving up and paying Geoff Keighley a bunch of money to hock their stuff for them. Mail us at our new email Mailbag@presspauseradio.com, leave a voicemail at 469-PPR-TALK, and be sure to stop by at our Forums if you haven’t already registered and post your thoughts about the show.

Fresh from Geoff Keighley's latest trailer romp, the Remap Radio crew has thoughts on the announcements at Gamescom, the suffocating nature of Microsoft's publishing reach, and celebrating the return (again!) of Routine. Plus, what's up with Roblox being a predatory landscape, and thoughts on several games, including Sword of the Sea, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, Herdling, Mafia: The Old Country, and [deep breath] a Gundam card game.Discussed: Gamescom 12:19, Microsoft's Shadow Over Opening Night Live 46:22, The rest of opening night live 59:14, Sony Changes PS5 Price 1:30:35, Rob's Gel 2:02:04, Ninja Gaiden Ragebound 2:13:37, Mafia: The Old Country 2:20:06, Sword of the Sea 2:40:20, The Question Bucket 2:53:09, Outro and Announcements 3:16:23See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
On this week's episode, Nathan, Chris, and Riley discuss Hollow Knight: Silksong, a game that is finally, actually, really real after years of anticipation (and Geoff Keighley showcase disappointments). It looks like… more Hollow Knight. Cool! Also, the developers have said they will not be sending out pre-release review code, citing concern that it would be “unfair” to Kickstarter backers and regular players. But perhaps that approach is better for interesting writing about the game – and games in general – in the long run? We're left with another question, as well: Now that Silksong is just around the corner, what games remain in the Painfully Long-Awaited Pantheon? What will be the next Silksong? Then we talk about other cool games that have received a Gamescom spotlight: Ninja Gaiden 4, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2, Resident Evil Requiem, and of course, Denshattack, which looks way better than all those other games. Lastly, we discuss the impact of Trump's tariffs on video games – for the first time in maybe ever, console prices are going up toward the end of a generation, not down – and how they represent a stealth tax on GTA VI (which will probably be very expensive in its own right). Oh, and Chris decides to just make his own PlayStation 5, until he realizes that it'd probably land him in jail. On this week's episode of the PixelPlay Podcast, Adam and Chris talk about the entire Gamescom: ONL show and why they've seen enough shows recently to know that they are not among the gamers that Geoff Keighley is targeting with these trailer spectacles. They also reinforce this with their point from last week on how the AAA industry has no original ideas, as in this show none of those AAA games really grabbed their attention. In today's Daily Fix:A new Helldivers 2 Xbox trailer has just dropped, and while Xbox fans are obviously very happy to finally help defend Super Earth, Halo fans are going nuts over a possible crossover tease at the end of the trailer. The short scene features a single drop pod landing in an urban setting, but with rain and a moody soundtrack not unlike some scenes from Halo 3: ODST. And with the game coming to Halo's home console, it makes sense that developer Arrowhead would celebrate by collaborating with one of Helldivers' biggest inspirations. In other news, gamescom Opening Night Live is this coming Tuesday, and host Geoff Keighley is already teasing an exclusive look at Resident Evil: Requiem. And we take a look at one of Borderlands 4's vault hunters, Rafa the exo soldier.Presented by Borderlands 4.

A whirlwind of a couple weeks, to say the least! The Nintendo Switch 2 is finally out, the 2025 Tony Awards were a slay, brand new video games have been announced at Summer Game Fest, and all in all things feel...bad! Listener, it always feels weird to talk about video games and culture when things feel so dire and bad in the world. We recorded this episode amidst the ICE-protests in Los Angeles, and as the fight against the authoritarianism and fascism of this administration continues, it feels very bread-and-circus-y to talk about trivial things like video games during these times. But rest and joy are important, and we hope we can provide a little bit of levity in your day while still encouraging you to protest, donate, fight, pressure your elected officials into doing something, et al. Hang in there and keep up the good fight! In this episode, Laurence shares his first impressions of the Switch 2 and Mario Kart World, the two of us discuss the banger 2025 Tony Awards, and we share some of our favorite announcements from Geoff Keighley's E3 successor, Summer Game Fest, and its related events. We attempt to do two hours of gaming talk in one hour, so buckle up! The ROG Xbox Ally is the handheld Xbox, announced at Summer Game Fest. Geoff Keighley misled at the Summer Game Fest Kickoff Showcase by claiming that dev teams were smaller than they actually were - erasing the many outsourced parts of the game development process. Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is coming from Digital Eclipse, but is not Gold Master Series #4. The Nintendo Switch 2 is both plentiful and hard to find, depending on who you ask. We then talk about the transfer process, gameshare, clip sharing, the official carrying case, and what I played first. Then we talk to Rob about the Nintendo Switch 2.
On this week's episode, Nathan, Chris, and Riley reflect on the latest installment of Geoff Keighley's mid-year video game advertisement carnival, Summer Game Fest. It was a weird one! High-profile announcements were few and far between, leaving relative no-names shaped kinda like the industry's heaviest hitters to fill in the gaps. But at least Stranger Than Heaven, which is basically noir Yakuza in the 1940s, looks cool. Then Nathan talks about what it was like to actually attend SGF's in-person Play Days event, which took place roughly a mile from the locus of LA's anti-ICE protests. Game developers and press struggled with mixed feelings over the unavoidable tension between the perceived frivolity of advertising video games within the event's walls and the enormity of the protests raging outside. After that, we move on to perhaps the week's most telling story: what happened to Dragon Age: The Veilguard. A new Bloomberg report details trend-chasing, reactive mismanagement nearly every step of the way. At what point do we determine that these execs are simply not fit to lead? Lastly, we figure out where we fall on the Aftermath community's incredible Many Emotions Of Geoff Keighley chart.Credits- Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, & Riley MacLeod- Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude- Subscribe to Aftermath!About The ShowAftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post.

Episode 380 – “Gandalf, Game Fest, and Getting to the End”Fred finally put a bow on Octopath Traveler II, clocking in at a hefty 76 hours. He's now stuck in that post-game limbo, unsure what to dive into next—and somewhere along the way, he saw Gandalf, which we'll unpack. Jake, meanwhile, is still going strong in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, now 31 hours deep and not letting up.Listener feedback this week was short but sweet. Big Box gave us props for our thumbnail game, and 1blktalon chimed in with a time-stamped shoutout for Jake's "Amen" moment from Episode 378, also weighing in on Jade Raymond. Appreciate the love—and the laughs. As for the news, Summer Game Fest 2025 is right around the corner. Geoff Keighley will host on June 6th, and PlayStation is officially on board as a partner. Expect big reveals, including WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, and a post-show indie showcase from Day of the Devs. Meanwhile, IO Interactive is gearing up to unveil 007 First Light during their own showcase the same day, teasing Bond's origin story with the tagline "Earn the number."CD Projekt Red is offering a first look at the tech behind The Witcher 4 at the State of Unreal on June 3rd, showing off what Unreal Engine 5 will bring to the franchise. Tango Gameworks is back in action too—thanks to KRAFTON—and already hiring for a new action project following their reboot.Kojima's Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will get the spotlight during a June 8th live event hosted by Keighley, with a gameplay demo and surprise guests promised. In less celebratory news, Borderlands 4 found itself in hot water after Randy Pitchford suggested that “real fans” would pay $80 for the game. After backlash, he walked the statement back with a public apology. Also this week, we learned that The Order 1886 was originally meant to be a trilogy—plans for The Order 1891 and 1899 were scrapped after poor reviews and the eventual closure of Ready at Dawn. A small nod lives on in Astro Bot, where Sir Galahad appears as a collectible. And finally, MindsEye continues to stir controversy. Developer Mark Gerhard blames targeted attacks and bots for the game's rocky reception. Whether that's true or not, the game launches June 10th, so we'll see for ourselves soon enough.Let's get into it.Your support goes a long way in helping us continue to create the content you love. In its death, we discuss the road the led it there and what we think of Summer Game Fest taking its place.

WB Games has announced they're closing Monolith Productions, who was working on the Wonder Woman game, as well as the studio behind Multiversus and WB San Diego working on a yet to be announced AAA, free-to-play game. Geoff Keighley's 'The Game Awards' festivities didn't disappoint this year. Quite the contrary, it was arguably the single strongest showing of new game announcements the industry has seen in seemingly forever, and it was capped-off with what many of us have long awaited: Naughty Dog's new game. For the first time since 2005's Jak X: Combat Racing on PlayStation 2, Sony's crown jewel studio is readying a product that's aligned neither with Uncharted nor The Last of Us. It's called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, it's about a spacefaring bounty hunter and a mysterious alien planet, and it's coming to PlayStation 5 at an undetermined point in the future. Naturally, we have much to discuss. Other TGA announcements of note include a surprise update for Helldivers 2, Capcom reveals in the form of new games in the Onimusha and Okami series, a brand new multiplayer Elden Ring spin-off called Nightreign, our first look at Borderlands 4 and The Witcher IV, the long-awaited revival of the Turok IP, the first new 2D Ninja Gaiden in more than three decades, and much more. And there's a regular ol' episode of Sacred Symbols underneath all of that, too, focused on the purported leak of Bend Studio's new game, the death of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a serious lawsuit filed against Bungie by a fired executive, final word on long-defunct vaporware PS4 project Wild, and more. We wrap things up with listener inquiries on topics like rumors of an upcoming Steam console, parasocial relationships in the creator space, the ability of dialogue to ruin a perfectly good user experience, and a conundrum surrounding perpetual hiccups and $100 million.
