He shares information about the proper lifestyle to produce healthy communication between the brain and the gut. IN THIS EPISODE: [01:38] Dr. Mayer explains why he wrote his first book and what he learned from being a first-time author [04:08] The medical community is gradually changing how it views the body and the brain. There are definite connections between emotional well-being and physical health [06:00] Dr. Mayer explains the bidirectional connections between the brain and the gut [08:20] Western medicine has taken one view, but ancient healing systems have always viewed the gut as the place diseases start [13:24] When the environment in our gut changes, chemicals provide feedback to the brain. [17:52] Several different therapies are being developed. An example is nutritional psychiatry [21:41] Dr. Mayer leaves us with his prescription for a healthier gut through diet and exercise KEY TAKEAWAYS: The gut has a substantial role in our overall health. There are direct links between the gut and the brain. Eating a plant-based diet, vigorous exercise, interrupting a sedentary lifestyle during the day, and meditation is vital to longevity. Holistic medicine has been on the right track by examining our gut's role in overall wellness. There are so many variables in your yard, and they all work in tandem with each other. That's why the answer is so often “it depends”. What does it depend *on* though? Two new episodes in a row? Hmm. That's curious…..

Misfolded Proteins In Alzheimer's Plaque Are A Sign Of Impaired Deuterium Homeostasis Stephanie Seneff, PhD • https://people.csail.mit.edu/seneff/ • Book - The Glyphosate Effect: How the World's Most Common Herbicide Is Undermining Your Health and What You Can Do About It #StephanieSeneff #Glyphosate #GutDybiosis #AutoImmunity Stephanie Seneff is a Senior Research Scientist at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and author of the recently published book; Toxic Legacy: How the Weedkiller Glyphosate Is Destroying Our Health and the Environment. Dr Seneff presents mounting evidence that the active ingredient in the world's most commonly used weedkiller is contributing to skyrocketing rates of chronic disease. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, the most commonly used weedkiller in the world. Nearly 300 million pounds of glyphosate-based herbicide are sprayed on farms—and food—every year. Agrochemical companies claim that glyphosate is safe for humans, animals, and the environment. But emerging scientific research on glyphosate's deadly disruption of the gut microbiome, its crippling effect on protein synthesis, and its impact on the body's ability to use and transport sulfur—not to mention several landmark legal cases— tells a very different story. In Toxic Legacy, senior research scientist Stephanie Seneff, PhD, delivers compelling evidence based on countless published, peer-reviewed studies—all in frank, illuminating, and always accessible language. Throughout Toxic Legacy readers will discover:• The uniquely toxic nature of glyphosate• How glyphosate disrupts the microbiome, leading to gut dysbiosis, autoimmunity, neurodegeneration, and more• Why we're seeing a rise in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, infertility, depression, and anxiety• Glyphosate's role in soil degeneration, water contamination, and threats to wildlife and biodiversity• Important nutritional guidance for conscientious consumers who want to avoid glyphosate-contaminated foods and improve their health• Stephanie Seneff sounds the alarm on glyphosate, giving you guidance on simple, powerful changes you can make right now and essential information you need to protect your health, your family's health, and the planet on which we all depend. She received the B.S. degree in Biophysics, M.S. and E.E. degrees in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science all from MIT. For over three decades, her research interests have always been at the intersection of biology and computation: developing a computational model for the human auditory system, understanding human language so as to develop algorithms and systems for human computer interactions, as well as applying natural language processing (NLP) techniques to gene predictions. She has published over 170 refereed articles on these subjects, and has been invited to give keynote speeches at several international conferences. She has also supervised numerous Master's and PhD theses at MIT. In 2012, Dr. Seneff was elected Fellow of the International Speech and Communication Association (ISCA). In recent years, Dr. Seneff has focused her research interests back towards biology. She is concentrating mainly on the relationship between nutrition and health. Since 2011, she has published over two dozen papers in various medical and health-related journals on topics such as modern day diseases (e.g., Alzheimer, autism, cardiovascular diseases), analysis and search of databases of drug side effects using NLP techniques, and the impact of nutritional deficiencies and environmental toxins on human health. Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways Don't underestimate recovery – it's where the real progress and results emergeDelayed onset muscle soreness (sets in 24-48 hours after exercise) cascade: the swelling response triggers the neural response which then triggers the pain responseYou need a high peak for adaptation to occur but also need an extremely sharp recovery for change to take placeYou don't need to combine every single recovery strategy, here are tools to choose from: cold plunge, massage, breathwork, slow-paced music after exercise Recover tools everyone should use: light movement, sleepAvoid taking cortisol-reducing supplements prophylactically without knowing your cortisol is high – cortisol regulation needs to be very strategic because you want natural fluctuations throughout the day and with exercise The key is understanding how quickly you return to the baselineHeart rate variability (HRV) is a better marker of recovery than resting heart rate but only compare to yourself and not others – measure under the same circumstances every day (ideally in the morning), and take consistently for a month to understand trends before you use as recovery indicator or worry about changes Don't stress about daily changes, track percent derivation from normIf you workout but never feel sore or need outside stimulus to get going, you're selling yourself short – you want to get good at recovery so you build resilience and the damage lessensDon't compare your numbers to others or panic at every change in metric you see: go based on what is normal for you and what normal variations for you and your situation are – make changes when you deviate 4-6 days or more Changes might be to stress management, nutrition, hydration, sleep, and training volume, or you may need to reassess the programRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn this episode 5 of a 6-part special series on fitness, exercise and performance with Andy Galpin, PhD, professor of kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton, he explains how to optimize post-training recovery and how to avoid overtraining in order to better achieve your fitness and exercise goals. He explains the cellular mechanisms of muscle soreness and pain, why adequate recovery is essential for all physical adaptations, and how to enhance recovery using breathwork, thermal, movement, and pressure-based techniques. He describes how overtraining impedes exercise progress and how to assess if you are overreaching or overtraining, by using specific biomarkers and indicators. Like other performance metrics, recovery is a skill that can and should be trained, and that can be learned. This episode provides an actionable toolkit for how to monitor and improve your exercise recovery abilities, which will improve your overall mental and physical health. Routines Create Coping Skills in Traumatic Times [caption id="attachment_11966" align="alignleft" width="352"] Dr. Angel Iscovich, MD, author of "The Art of Routine"[/caption] Dr. Angel L. Iscovich, M.D. joins host Laura Reeves to talk about creating routines as a coping mechanism in traumatic times. An emergency room physician and Miniature Schnauzer enthusiast, Iscovich's book “The Art of Routine” has great suggestions as we emerge from the trauma of the pandemic years. Iscovich studied older patients and found that consistently, folks who lived well into their older years had one thing in common. Routines. Even routines that aren't necessarily “healthy” were beneficial, Isocvich noted. “I noticed people that were over 100 years of age, centenarians, I noticed two qualities that they had,” Iscovich said. “One is that they have a stable environment. By that I mean both physical and people around them. And two, they had a very, very regular routine. They had a rhythm, a routine, things that they did with great regularity. “But what I also noticed is what they did varied quite a bit. So, some of them were doing not necessarily healthy things, but that got me to thinking. That may be part of the key is more the *how* than the *what* we're doing. In other words, the routine may be more important than actually what you're eating because here's this 100-year-old having Dr. Peppers every day, you know, and that doesn't seem like the right thing to do, but that there was something to the fact that you had routine and regularity. “It seemed to me that for us as humans in this world where we're using our digital world as we are today in computers and sort, that we're being constantly interrupted and disrupted and being always tempted to do different things all the time, and that maybe, maybe changing things up too much is not really the way to go. “We seek and survive by having kind of stability. Homeostasis is what it's called in some of the physiological terms. And having equilibrium.” Iscovich's suggestions for building routine for a healthier outcome: Recreate your own routine Get more exercise Get outdoors Do daily affirmations Quiet time ... get rid of the sensory input Self discipline… dopamine works. Do one event, do it repetitively, complete the smallest task. This makes the body and brain chemistry give you a good feeling. Stick with one thing. This stabilizes us in times of uncertainty

Dr. Michelle Gumz is an associate professor at the University of Florida. Her research focuses on the kidney's circadian clock and its relationship to cardiovascular health. In this episode, Dr. Gumz details how the circadian clock provides a mechanism for predictive homeostasis that directly impacts cardiovascular and kidney function. She also explains why normal sleep patterns are critical to long-term health outcomes. Dr. Gumz has a long-time interest in the molecular control of renal function. The Gumz laboratory is investigating the role of the molecular circadian clock in the kidney with the long-term goal of determining how the clock in the kidney contributes to the control of blood pressure and overall cardiovascular health. Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid hormone that regulates sodium balance and blood pressure. As a graduate student, Dr. Gumz was the first to identify the circadian clock gene Period 1 as an aldosterone target. She has subsequently shown that Period 1 regulates the transcription of alpha ENaC, the aldosterone-regulated and rate-limiting subunit of the epithelial sodium channel. New areas of study include cross-talk between the kidney clock and other tissue clocks and sex differences in the function of Period 1 and Bmal1, another critical core clock gene. That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem "Stress is your brain and body preparing you to do something effortful." Dr. Alex Auerbach “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming, you're a swimmer, if you're driving, you're a driver. If you're leading, you're by definition, a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to decide or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day! That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik KoremSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Prather opens the show with two fiery segments for our "Health Freedom Update". Then, we focus on how Obesity is the biggest contributor to Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer, and Type II Diabetes. In this episode, we talk about:—How groups like the World Economic Forum and World Health Organization are planning for the NEXT pandemic, with plans that are much harsher than the response to COVID.—Who was at most risk for COVID-19 and the groups that fared the worst through the pandemic. And why the groups with low Vitamin D levels (such as the elderly and black populations) were hit the hardest.—The huge benefit to the wealthiest that the COVID pandemic provided (at our expense).—How to determine if someone is trying to impart propaganda or bring forth Truth. And how 85% of COVID deaths could have been avoided if effective treatment protocols had not been suppressed. —The way you can protect yourself from the new variants by making sure you are tested to determine your Vitamin D, Zinc, and Iodine levels so that you know the exact state of your immune system.—How Obesity increased a person's chance of being hospitalized from COVID. And the doctor who was called "fat-phobic" for recommending that people avoid donuts for breakfast and instead make healthier choices. —Why Body Fat Percentage is more important to look at than Body Mass Index (B.M.I.) to see how fat changes the Homeostasis and Health of your body. And how you can get a free Body Composition Analysis at Holistic Integration that determines your Body Fat Percentage with an accuracy within 2%. —Why Government and Big Business were behind the dramatic increase in obesity levels from the 1960's to today.—The difference between "white fat" and "brown fat".—Why 95% of all weight loss programs will result in a person being fatter in five years than if they had done nothing at all. And the difference that Holistic Integration provides in making sure patients wind up healthier and able to maintain their fat loss. http://www.TheVoiceOfHealthRadio.com

Guiding the aging process is a long-term project and I'm celebrating 11 years since I started to reverse engineer my biological age. In this episode, I break down my Functional Nutrition framework and tracking tool that will help you understand your baseline and get really clear on how you can improve your longevity strategy. In order to feel younger while growing older, you need to know what's happening inside your body and be aware of how external exposures make an impact internally. One of the simplest ways to do that in the comfort of your own home is by tracking your food, mood, and elimination via urine and bowel movements. I share tools to help you know what to look out for, like Vivoo and the Bristol Stool Scale. I also encourage all of my clients to examine their sleep quality, stress management, glucose levels, and energy levels after they exercise. There are so many effective treatments and modalities out there that can support you, but your central nervous system will override all of your efforts on an unconscious level if you don't do the emotional work first. If you haven't already, listen to Episode 8 - Making Peace with Your Past and use that as a launching point. Listen in to learn more about my healing journey and methodologies that have helped guide the way. Today's episode is all about your trauma related questions! The first listener asks how much of our trauma do we share with our children once they become adults? I tackle this question in two parts, firstly how to approach discussing trauma with children when they're young, and then with our children once they're adults. I discuss how I approached telling my children I would be checking into to rehab, and how I navigated not wanting to lie while also not burdening them with details they wouldn't be able to process. I encourage the listener to talk to their kids about their trauma how they'd talk to their kids about any difficult subject: with clarity and awareness of which details are unnecessarily scary. The second listener question is about how to deal with the voice that tells them they will fail after every ounce of success they achieve. I contextualize this fear of “the other shoe dropping” as very normal for folks who have CPTSD. Many of us don't want to feel hope because we've had it crushed before, and so it is a natural defence mechanism. I detail the science behind why we think this way, and reference a study linked below. I offer some reassurance to help them reframe this feeling, to feel this feeling and to push past it anyway. "I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor." –Thoreau Some of us are dabblers, some of us are obsessives, and some of us are hackers. Which one are you? They're basically just different approaches many people take to learning. The dabbler loves when things are new. Just loves the shiny new object and everything about starting something. The obsessive is focused on getting results as fast as possible. The hacker gets good enough at something and is fine where she or he is. Don't really like any of the options? Is there a better way? We probably all can recognize ourselves in a combination of these learning styles. And yes there is a problem with them all: we never get on the road to mastery with them. They aren't the stuff of lifelong learning. Let's get on the path of a master. Certainly when we are patient and stick with our learning day in and day out, we are definitely more on the path. But with all of that said, many of us begin to experience change and then we hit the plateau. That long period of time where we're sticking with it, pushing hard, staying strong…and nothing happens. Or we begin to experience change and then we run into resistance. AND we might begin to think this shiny new object or all this efforting isn't worth it and we criticize ourselves for even trying. We even begin to use language which reveals our negative thinking and the stories we tell ourselves, and we think we're “just being real” and give up. How part of what's going on when we regress or retract is about the body's response to stress. Change? Homeostasis is first to be understood. Then, you can be prepared to meet it and learn the long path toward deep mastery. Dr. Anderson is a Professor of Biology at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), a member of the National Academy of Sciences and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). We discuss how states of mind (and body) arise and persist and how they probably better explain human behavior than emotions per se. We also discuss the many kinds of arousal that create varying levels of pressure for certain behaviors to emerge. We discuss different types of violent aggression and how they are impacted by biological sex, gender, context, prior experience, and hormones, and the neural interconnectedness of fear, aggression and sexual behavior. We also discuss peptides and their role in social isolation-induced anxiety and aggression. Dr. Anderson also describes novel, potentially powerful therapeutics for mental health. On today's ID the Future, Stairway to Life co-author Rob Stadler and host Eric Anderson delve deeper into Challenge to Origin of Life: Energy Harnessing, the latest video in the Long Story Short intelligent design video series. Could the first cell have been much simpler than any current cell, making it easier for it to emerge through blind natural forces on the early Earth? Stadler and Anderson surface one big problem with that idea: in experiments to make relatively simple cells even simpler, the cells inevitably become less robust and adaptable. These simpler cells must be coddled to survive. But the first cell on earth would have been anything but coddled. It would have had no source of glucose and Read More › Source

Your thoughts determine your actions. Your actions determine your habits. Your habits determine your future. Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, reminds us of the value of our mental well-being, how our mental state shapes us, and how we can shape it. In this episode, Jason shares an effective 3-step strategy on how to reprogram our minds, as well as a throwback to his wrestling days wherein his mental state was the make-or-break factor. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Your thoughts eventually become your actions. If you let negative thoughts consume you, they'll eventually become your reality. Drown out negative thoughts by cultivating an attitude of gratitude. Go on the offense. You are in total control of your thoughts and you can get rid of those you don't want and don't need. Our minds are similar to computers. You can have the best computer, but if it gets corrupted by a virus, it's going to slow down. The same thing happens we allow negative thoughts to ruminate in our minds. The same thing happened to Jason's computer and the only thing that fixed it was a complete reset. Negative thinking begets negative thinking. Journaling helps in taking note of accomplishments and positive memories to combat the negative ones. Our existence isn't a very long one, so let's make the best of it. It's not easy and it takes time, so train your mind every single day. 3 KEY POINTS Recognize negative thoughts Refute those thoughts. Replace them with words of affirmation.
