It can feel awful when other people judge you, but it can be even worse when you judge yourself. Despite his immense achievements, Former European, Commonwealth and World Champion 400m medallist Iwan Thomas is no stranger to self-loathing. In this chat with Fearne, Iwan talks about the innate need to make our parents proud throughout our lives, as well as how becoming a dad himself has changed his outlook on life. They also try to figure out the balance of pushing your kid to believe in themselves, without stressing them out with too much pressure. Iwan is honest about the reality of feeling he couldn't talk to even his closest friends about his mental health during his lowest moments, as well as how he's learnt to open up. Iwan's memoir, Brutal, is out on July 4th. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

***Trigger Warning*** – In this episode we discuss topics that may be triggering for some listeners, namely Babies in Intensive care and baby loss. If you are affected by any of the subjects in this episode you can find support here. Iwan Thomas is an Olympic athlete, TV presenter, commentator, Celebrity Masterchef and a dad! Iwan was a whirlwind of a child and his strict, military dad encouraged him to focus on sport - which turned out brilliantly! After spending many years focussed on sport and being a self-confessed, selfish athlete, at 45 Iwan was ready to become a dad. His first son, Teddy was rushed to intensive care shortly after birth with the life threatening infection, Group B Strep. Iwan was thrust into being a new parent and not knowing if his son would survive – a situation that was naturally devastating but he found it hard to reach out for support. Teddy survived his illness and Iwan now has two energetic boys in his life and is working hard to create great memories for his sons every day. He is also spreading awareness of Group B Strep, and how easy it is to prevent passing it onto a baby through birth. Huge thanks to Iwan for joining us and sharing his story

Normally on this podcast, we ask people to tell us what their 2 car fantasy garage would be, just so we can all lust over the fantastical suggestions of poster worthy automotive exotica that we'll realistically never own. In the case of Iwan Thomas however, there's not much that he hasn't had at some point, and we're talking about some proper silly motors! For anyone unsure of Iwan's thoroughbred petrolhead credentials, have a listen to this!
Another gathering of the RunPod Run Club and this time Jenni is joined by one of the our greatest 400m sprinters, the current UK record holder, Iwan Thomas. Iwan may well have retired from competing in the 400m after winning medals at all major championships but he has most certainly not stopped running! In fact, he's run further this year than ever before…this year, Iwan decided to enter a 100 mile race. In this episode, we hear why he decided to set himself this epic challenge, how he prepared and can a sprinter really also be an ultra-marathoner? It's a truly inspiring listen and you will without doubt be in awe of Iwan once you hear his ultra marathon story. Enjoy.

Iwan Thomas is one of the characters of athletics....with his distinct hair as flamboyant 400m runner and now as a TV and stadium presenter. There is so much to Iwan Thomas and he freely talks about all aspects of his life - from his days competing to his post-athletics life. He talks about how he lives his life, surrounding himself with good friends and good people. He won silver at the World Athletics Championships in the 4x400m relay but this was eventually upgraded to gold because two of the American team admitted to take performance enhancing drugs. Iwan feels he's never been properly recognised with the team. He was given a form of medal in a car park in Birmingham. It makes him sad that they've never had their moment in the limelight. There are lots of great stories; from an altercation in a Southampton nightclub to drinking free beers to help give a sample for a drugs test. Iwan had many battles with injury during his career, missing the Athens Olympics and Melbourne Commonwealth Games. He tells us how he struggled mentally to cope with with his physical injuries and shut himself away suffering depression. He went on to make a video with Prince Harry to help others with mental health issues. He also had a traumatic time soon after his little boy Teddy was born. Within hours of being born little Teddy was taken into intensive care with Strep B. For ten days it was incredibly serious. Iwan now does all he can to raise awareness of the condition. We'd love to hear from you if you have any comments or guest suggestions @trackandballpod @ellsbells89 @marathonchamp

After beating everyone so convincingly on that memorable sports day, Mr Atkins encouraged Jamie to join Newport Harriers, in South Wales. After the introduction to athletics, when Jamie was only 10 years old he never looked back. Jamie developed into one of the big personalities of the British athletics team, recognised by his peroxide dreadlocks for many years, which led to a promotional campaign with Vidal Sassoon.
