Her newspaper only launched 14 weeks before the outbreak of war in Ukraine, but the Kyiv Independent now has over two million followers on Twitter, and has been described by Time Magazine as: "The world's primary source for reliable English-language journalism on the war." Emma speaks to the Editor of the newspaper, Olga Rudenko about the challenges female journalists are facing in Ukraine. She also discusses how her and her team, which are mostly women, launched their newspaper just weeks after being fired from their previous newspaper that was owned by an oligarch. In a Woman's hour exclusive, two women whose disabled sons died after failing to get their Special Educational Needs supported in the right schools, have written an open Letter to two Secretaries of State warning that the system must change. Ministers are consulting until July 22 on how to make the SEND system better. Our reporter Carolyn Atkinson tells us more, and Emma speaks with Amanda Batten, chair of the Disabled Children's Partnership and Susie who spent £10,000 battling the system to get her disabled child into an appropriate school. Since 2009, the artist Kirstie Macleod has been working on The Red Dress project. This involves pieces of this red silk dress travelling around the world to be embroidered by mostly female artisans, many of whom have been marginalised and live in poverty. After 13 years, 46 countries and 343 embroiderers, the dress is finally finished. And, former Olympic Athlete Aniyka Onuora may have stepped away from the track, but in her new memoir: "My hidden race" she details her personal experience with professional sports, racism and sexism, mental health, and growing up in a Nigerian household in 1990's Liverpool. Hot Off The Wire
A week of extremes, gun violence debates and rising prices | ICYMI for June 10, 11 & 12, 2022

Hot Off The Wire

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2022 31:37

Extremism came clearly into focus this week. The Department of Homeland Security issued a warning that the US was in a “heightened threat environment” over the next six months. Reasons included the midterm elections as well as the immigration crisis at the border with Mexico. The warning also noted the looming Supreme Court decision on abortion, a concern that became a reality Wednesday when a man was arrested in connection to an assassination attempt on Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Stories of extremism did not stop there. On Thursday night in front of a national television audience, the House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection included dramatic capitol police dispatch audio audio and details from panel members that placed the blame on former President Donald Trump. Trump downplayed the investigation on social media and House Republicans believe the findings are a distraction from current problems that will backfire on Democrats during the midterms. Earlier in the week, it was revealed five members of the Proud Boys will stand trial in August over conspiracy charges in connection to the events of Jan. 6.  Following a deadly shooting in Buffalo, New York governor Kathy Hochul signed a package of new gun control laws. It included a ban of anyone under the age of 21 from buying or owning a semiautomatic weapon. Beyond Buffalo, multiple shootings, most notably the deadly school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, led to hearings on Capitol Hill. The House ultimately passed bills that are unlikely to gain traction in the closely divided Senate. Let's listen to those stories, as well as testimony from family and victims, as well as reactions from lawmakers.  For the city of Detroit, urban violence will be the focus of law enforcement this summer. Seven states held primaries on Tuesday with 78 seats for the House of Representatives on those ballots. But perhaps the most dramatic result of the day was a recall election for a sitting prosecutor in San Francisco.  As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, there were a couple of stories related to vaccine options for Americans. In other national news, parents in need of baby formula should start seeing more available in stores in the near future as a factory was reopened. Former Olympic gymnasts are among the assault victims wanting the FBI to be held accountable. A stamp honoring Former First Lady Nancy Reagan was unveiled. A man accused of being a serial rapist is now facing additional charges. And man has been arrested after cocaine was discovered in an unusual location. In international news, the week began with the conclusion of festivities honoring Queen Elizabeth's 70 years on the throne. Monday marked the 78th anniversary of the D-Day landing in Normandy, France, and marked the return of larger ceremonies since the start of the pandemic. In other news, the future of the pope is in question and tensions between Russia and the United States remain high. Russia began returning the bodies of dead Ukrainian soldiers from a steel plant, while more bodies are being discovered in the rubble. And President Biden spoke on the future of this hemisphere. Gas prices have been soaring and by Thursday the national average for a gallon hit another record high. More on that story from the Associated Press, and for additional tips on how to save money on fuel, be sure to listen to the PennyWise podcast. Did you ever pick up an item at a grocery store and think the packaging got a little smaller? Your eyes are not deceiving you. Shrinkflation is a thing and a way for producers to save money during times of rising prices. We look at that story as well as rising mortgage rates, Target canceling orders, the global economic outlook and the status of workers. And finally, one endangered species is getting some help in an effort to prevent extinction. — Compiled and narrated by Terry Lipshetz from Associated Press reports See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Former Olympic champion, and transgender woman Caitlyn Jenner has been very critical of Thomas. I discuss that and get into common sense as it relates to this. Is this about common sense, or is it about science? Maybe a little of both? I read what I thought was an excellent column by Phil Mushnick of the New York Post regarding common sense on this issue. "Long afloat in shipless oceans": So begins Song To The Siren whose lyrics were inspired by Homer's Odyssey and the story of the Sirens who lured unwitting sailors to their deaths on the rocks. There is something so ancient and enchanting about the Siren that appeals to us. For the wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson listening to the song reinforced his belief that the eerie calls of seals at night were in fact the original siren voices whose sound and shape convinced sailors that they were being called by strange mer-creatures. His collaboration with poet Alec Finlay led to Chris recording two singers singing to each other across a bay in the North East of England "Here I am waiting to enfold you". Song To The Siren fills him with melancholy. The image of lives lost at sea is one that Meg Bignell strongly associates with the song and when a family friend drowned in the ocean surrounding her native Tasmania she was comforted by the version by This Mortal Coil and Elizabeth Fraser's haunting vocals. Larry Beckett regrets the song's association with death as he intended the lyrics to tell a more hopeful story about love. However Tim Buckley's death at 28 and the tragedy of his son Jeff's drowning in 1997 weigh Song To The Siren with a heavy sorrow that comforts those who have lost a loved one. Former Olympic runner Anthony Famiglietti lost his childhood friend Rob in an accident when they were both 21. Rob introduced Anthony to the music of John Frusciante whose version of Song To The Siren astounded him when he first heard it. It has a profound effect on him and it speaks to him of fathers and sons communicating across time and space, when one has passed on as in the case of Tim and Jeff Buckley, and Anthony's friend Rob and his father, the man who inspired Anthony's career as a runner. When director Zack Snyder lost his daughter he stopped working on his Justice League film but when he completed it four years on he wanted to include Song To The Siren. Singer Rose Betts who recorded it for him explains how she immersed herself in the song to express the love, longing, grief and loss that it evokes. Musician and singer Dominic Stichbury sets out the musical elements that make this such a simple yet devastatingly powerful song. Producer: Maggie Ayre

At 19 years old, Crystal Phillips was among the top-ranked national team speed-skaters in Canada, and was an early hopeful for the 2010 Olympics. Her plans changed when, in 2005, she woke up one morning without sensation in her lower limbs. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and told that she would never skate again. The diagnosis was life altering: Crystal's identity, her social life, and sense of self had, until that time, been bound up with her athletic career. But with her health and her future in question, she maintained a deep sense of gratitude for all that she had been given in life, and ultimately discovered a new purpose. After several relapses of the disease—and after fighting her way back to the Canadian national team—Crystal founded the Branch Out Foundation, which has seeded millions of dollars in research grants for non-pharmaceutical treatments for neurological disorders.
