This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to help companies achieve both cost-efficient AND environmentally sustainable packing. My guest is James Malley, Co-founder and CEO of Paccurate.  James is a tech entrepreneur on a mission. He went to theater school and worked as a bellboy before he fell in love with tech. Working in the logistics tech space since 2009, he has helped create a variety of enterprise shipping technology. He spearheaded the design of an award-winning multi-carrier TMS.  In 2018 he co-founded Paccurate, which he leads as the CEO. Their mission: To make shipping more sustainable for your business and the planet. And this inspired me, and hence I invited James to my podcast. We explore what's broken in the way logistics companies approach packaging. James shares his vision of how to take cost-efficiency in packaging to a totally new level while at the same time making a significant global impact on the environment. He shares his big learning on getting traction in the market and what changes have been fundamental in that process. Lastly, he shares his advice on what to do / not to do to create a SaaS business that lasts.  Here's one of his quotes Our kind of biggest innovation or differentiator is that we look at the problem differently than all the others did. We're looking at optimizing for cost, whereas the other solutions were just looking to make things smaller. Which is a nice stand-in for the lowest cost, but it's not perfect.  And so, being able to make a packing decision based on the incentives that are baked into your negotiated rate table, your labor costs or your material costs - that is really about going down the rabbit hole on this problem. During this interview, you will learn four things: How to succeed in a market where everyone advises you 'stay out.' What you can do to accelerate the sales process in a market that is known for extreme long sales cycles What to do differently when promising a $10 million dollar savings doesn't get you the deal, or not even a meeting. How being a micro pessimist and a macro optimist is all you need to move the needle For more information about the guest from this week: James Malley Website Paccurate Subscribe to the Daily SaaS Reflection Get my free, 1 min daily reflection on shaping a B2B SaaS business no one can ignore. Most SMBs don't understand the importance of the packing process. They might have a very serialized pick, pack, and ship process and might pack one order at a time. As companies mature, they gain efficiencies by decoupling the process steps and optimizing them individually. Packing is one step that is often ignored. Most SMB companies might simply send the order from their eComm or ERP to print the shipping label using the order or pick list, skipping the packing step. So not only having a good packing step is necessary, but there are several technologies available that can help you optimize the packing step by doing the math for you for the ideal packaging configuration, saving freight costs and losses due to misconfigured packaging. In today's episode, our guest, James Malley, shares his insights on the importance of the packing step of the pick, pack, ship process. He also talks about the importance of having good product dimensions and packaging data that can help to streamline the packing process. Finally, he discusses several other nuances of the packaging process and how other companies are taking advantage of advancements in packaging technologies. For more information on growth strategies for SMBs using ERP and digital transformation, visit our community at wbs.rocks or elevatiq.com. Reducing the amount of air in packages is not just good for profits, it's critical for the environment too.James discusses the complex but critical question of how to reduce air in packages with cartonization. He digs into the low-hanging fruit that companies can initiate to begin cartonization, as well as raises awareness of the gravity of the waste issue worldwide.  HIGHLIGHTS02:58 Cartonization: Packing mistakes and the factors that drive them14:59 Amazon packing practices are practical but waste is a major issue18:59 Cartonizing realizes hidden savings per square foot28:47 Lead the shift because the waste problem needs to be resolved QUOTES19:36 Bad cartonization is still better than no cartonization - James: "The good news is there's a ton of low-hanging fruit, so if you don't have any cartonization, use bad cartonization. It'll get you at least some of the way there to get you started and help you keep your margins intact."27:04 The data proves that the waste problem is much more significant - James: "My team is very motivated by this idea that we could put a dent in some of the waste in supply chain. And I think it's kind of a rude awakening, a little bit, when you start digging into the data of how bad things actually are. From a packaging standpoint, we're like oh, we'll do paper fill and cardboard's better than plastic, and truth is it is but not by as much as we would hope." Find out more about James in the links below:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jmalley/Website: https://paccurate.io/

In this week's show, Phil talks to James Malley, the CEO and Co-Founder of Paccurate. He has been working in the logistics tech space since 2009 and has helped create a variety of enterprise shipping technology. He spearheaded the design of an award-winning multi-carrier TMS (Transportation Management Software) and since 2015, he's been evangelizing the use of AI to achieve cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable packing. James talks about the importance of investing in communication to make the innovation process easier. He also discusses the value of optimism and trying to see the best side of every situation.   KEY TAKEAWAYS:   TOP CAREER TIP When building something new that has no precedent, it's always best to focus more upon communication in the early stages, to make the process easier.   WORST CAREER MOMENT During a joint venture with a large company, James's work was not matched by his partner. Through this he learned to be wary of partners and what they can provide in terms of value.   CAREER HIGHLIGHT Conversely, a partnership entered into after gaining experience, proved entirely fruitful, especially when it came to sustainability.   THE FUTURE OF CAREERS IN I.T There are always problems to be solved – innovations to be found – even when we think we've come as far as we can. This makes the world of IT perennially exciting and challenging.   THE REVEAL What first attracted you to a career in I.T.? – James found his love for IT through design and problem solving. What's the best career advice you received? – Say yes to everything What's the worst career advice you received? – To again, say yes to everything! What would you do if you started your career now? – James would work on problems that other people are dealing with, and not things that nobody is asking for. What are your current career objectives? – Becoming a better CEO, helping others to achieve more and finding better ways to work remotely. What's your number one non-technical skill? – Networking. How do you keep your own career energized? – Making the supply chain more sustainable and less wasteful. What do you do away from technology? – Spending time with his three-year-old son and trying to prevent household accidents!   FINAL CAREER TIP Be a micro-pessimist, but a macro-optimist. It's easy to be pessimistic and difficult to see the best in a situation. But the best of the best can see the light in everything.   BEST MOMENTS (8:08) – James – “Invest in messaging and communication” (12:05) – James - “You may look around and think every problem has been solved. The truth is that's not the case” (12:37) – James – “Get comfortable with whatever industry you're in. That's where you'll find the most valuable ideas” (18:11)– James – “Focus on solving problems, and you'll find your niche sooner rather than later”   ABOUT THE HOST – PHIL BURGESS Phil Burgess is an independent IT consultant who has spent the last 20 years helping organizations to design, develop, and implement software solutions.  Phil has always had an interest in helping others to develop and advance their careers.  And in 2017 Phil started the I.T. We probably don't pay enough attention to the packaging used in supply chains - not that is until we receive a delivery, and it is a vastly outsized box for the size of the item being delivered. This issue of using outsized packaging affects upwards of 50% of items being delivered and is significant because apart from the excess cardboard being used, it also means far more delivery trucks are required to move the bigger boxes. One company looking to address this is Paccurate. To learn more about how Paccurate helps organisations reduce their packaging liabilities (financial and climate), I invited their co-founder and CEO James Malley to come on the podcast. We had a fascinating conversation covering the problems associated with packaging in supply chains, how Paccurate is helping organisations save money and emissions by fixing these problems, as well as their future plans.I learned loads, I hope you do too...If you have any comments/suggestions or questions for the podcast - feel free to leave me a voice message over on my SpeakPipe page or just send it to me as a direct message on Twitter/LinkedIn. The Supply Chain Buzz is Supply Chain Now's regular Monday livestream, held at 12n ET each week. This show focuses on some of the leading stories from global supply chain and global business, always with special guests – the most important of which is the live audience! In this episode of The Buzz, Supply Chain Now hosts Scott Luton and Greg White are joined by James Malley, Co-Founder and CEO, Paccurate. In an era of rising shipping costs, Paccurate not only helps companies optimize the way they pack and ship in order to save money, they can also help the supply chain contribute to corporate sustainability targets by using (and wasting) less packing material and fuel. James, Scott, and Greg discuss recent news stories related to supply chain capacity and costs: • News that shipping fees are going up in advance of the holidays – adding to an already (not so) perfect storm of supply chain backlogs and container shortages • How shipping container shortages are inflating costs and changing the profitability and viability of entire product lines • Why the time may have come for us to rediscover supply chain basics, practices like pooling orders, in order to increase efficiency Additional Links & Resources: Learn more about Supply Chain Now: https://supplychainnow.com/program/supply-chain-now Subscribe to Supply Chain Now and all other Supply Chain Now programs: https://supplychainnow.com/subscribe (https://supplychainnow.com/subscribe) Learn more about Paccurate: https://paccurate.io/ (https://paccurate.io/) Register for the OMNIA Partners Connections Conference: https://bit.ly/3jHlwdv (https://bit.ly/3jHlwdv) WEBINAR- State of the Supply Chain Report – Priorities for Building Resiliency in Your Supply Network: https://bit.ly/2XIRZHf (https://bit.ly/2XIRZHf) Download the 2021 Q2 U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index: https://bit.ly/3f1LO6S (https://bit.ly/3f1LO6S) This episode was hosted by Scott Luton and Greg White.
